I am currently with VZW and have very slow satellite internet. I still have my unlimited plan and don't want to lose it. I would like to take advantage of Sprints current unlimited for life phone plan to use the phone as a hotspot... Now I know that you are told it can't be done anymore, but that's what VZW will tell you also and let's just say I know that's a lie with the proper "adjustments" to the phone... So, with AOSP, is it still possible to tether with sprint phones? Thanks

First off, make sure you are in a Sprint LTE coverage area and you verify it with someone that has Sprint and that it works at your house. If you have good LTE from Sprint at your home, than yes it is. You don't need to go AOSP, you can just root your phone and install the hotspot mod and your golden. Unlimited data and tether freely. Sprint also offers an unlimited plan that includes 5GB of wifi hotspot if you don't want to root. Just make sure you have good LTE at your house before you switch because Sprint's LTE coverage is no where close to what Verizon has. If you want to stay with Verizon, my brother in law uses Foxfi to tether his unlimited plan on Verizon.
Thanks.

Crawj has a thread that has all the hotspot mods in it. You can find it in the android development section. All the mods through the 4.3 mja build are in the first post. If you have the very latest ota which is the mk2 build, that mod is towards the end of the thread. The important thing is to verify the build you are on and whether you are odexed or deodexed. If you install the wrong version it will soft brick your phone. You also need to be rooted.

I just installed the latest update and am in love with the 5 minutes I have used it. Everything seems bigger and much more pretty. Love the blue theme as well.
Anyway, I now have a "Mobile Hotspot" icon that I never had in previous android. I am on unlimited data right now from ATT grandfathered in. Can I use this hotspot that Gingerbread provided? Will I lose my unlimited data? any negative side effects? Thanks for the help!
Are you rooted?
You must have a tethering plan. For an alternative, you can use a tethering app without rooting, called pdanet. Which you can find on google, not in market. Its on sale for around $16. I love it.

I am 100% stock, no rooting or anything of the sort. My previous installment of Android 2.2 did not have any visible "Mobile Hotspot" icon that I could see within my applications list. Suddenly, this one has it.
I have been with [email protected] forever and am grandfathered in. I was under the impression that if I had a "Tethering" plan that I would lose my grandfathered status. Again, this icon appears in my applications list when I did the 160MB update to Gingerbread last night.
I dont want to use this green "Mobile Hot Spot" icon in my app list if it will change anything on my current plan or switch me out from unlimited. If it shows up in all installations of Gingerbread just for the hell of it thats fine with me, I just need to know not to touch it if its going to change things or charge me haha.

if you don't have a tethering plan and try to use it, it won't authenticate anyway so it won't work.
Your right! It did not validate. So if I find and use PDANET, I run the risk of ATT on my ass about tethering? If I did tether at all, it would only be a little.

Can I do it without rooting though? I think Barnacle is only a root thing and I have no desires to root this phone till the warranty is up.

Has this been proven? I'm assuming this is the method where you add another APN, the one that is available in gingerbreak I think, or gladroot.. one of them.
Is it known if they can tell about tethering through barncle or pdanet?

I use both and tethering never appeared on my plan. When I try the mobile hotpot app in the phone already, it says I don't have a tethering plan. So pdanet and barnacle don't trigger it. That's my theory.

With 2.3.4 you can edit the entitlement check then use the hotspot app. I have used it numerous times and nothing has changed on my unlimited plan. Checkbthe dev forums for the post on changing the entitlement check. And yes you must be rooted.

I know this is an old post just updating some account info....
If you are on the old grandfathered real Unlimited data plan, never, ever call ATT and ask them to enable mobile hotspot or tethering on your plan. ATT does not provide tethering or hotspots anymore on the enterprise unlimited data plan like they did in 2007 for PDAs.
If you ask them to do it, they will require you to change your plan to one of the two data plans that do allow wifi hotspot and tethering which are 2 and 4GB plans and depending on your usage like me will cost you, even though the low plan is half of what you are paying with the Ent Unlimited.
Its ATTs way of forcing everyone out of grandfathered plans into a new price point for them so they can make more money. Not worth it.
As stated in previous posts in this thread just change entitlement to "disabled" and be done with it, free wifi hotspot =)
And for me it is awesome....
Howdy,
I'll be using my Note on AT&T and want to use their voicemail. Now I know how to install the apk from the forums, however do I have to have an LTE data plan for it to work? I have grandfathered unlimited data and don't want to lose it.
Also, what steps do I take in settings to make sure I am not nagged to accept updates? I don't want to upgrade to ICS due to bugs.
Thanks!

before its moved the answer is no... your plan is fine...
the updates... just un tick auto update in settings..
Only if you want to use Visual voicemail you will need LTE plan. It's actually better to change your data plan to LTE so you can have 5GB limit before getting throttled, you won't lose unlimited data either.

I am on the grandfathered unlimited plan. However, I went into ATT when I first got my Note because I didn't know there were multiple models. They couldn't "activate" it because the IMEI didn't register. However, they went ahead and put the ATT note on my account and "activated" me for LTE, but I'm still on unlimited data. I just don't have LTE because the phone don't support it.

Has anyone noticed difficulties with wifi tethering on t mobile since update 4.4?
I am using Purity ROM 1/8/14
I was able to bypass the T-Mobile hotspot plan before the update (rooted on purity rom) using pdanet+ but since updating to 4.4 and re flashing the latest purity rom (1/8/14) it takes me right to the tmobile hotspot page informing me that i dont have the feature on my plan. I can get it to work when using usb but pda net has to be set to hide tether usage, it takes me to the same tmobile page otherwise. I just wonder why its not bypassing normally. like it used to.
Is this just a problem within purity rom/4.4 at this point? Has anyone else been able to get wifi tethering working on 4.4?

The only important part is this:
Adds tether_dun_required fix for tethering on T-Mobile
This is to be applied to the buildprops file under global settings. Tether_dun_required = 0.

I'm on subsidized phone/plan, and pay 79.99 for two lines with unlimited data, minutes, and messaging. This means that I paid $50 for a nexus 4 and has an htc one for free on this plan.

I am on the $30 monthly prepaid option with unlimited text/data (5gb of 4g) and 100 minutes.
The same issue occured on 4.3 back when i was using paranoid android, so i flashed to a different rom (purity rom) and it tethered just fine.
I was running that for months until the 4.4 updates came out, i flashed everything back to stock for the updates. Rooted and flashed new purity rom and a couple weeks later i tried to use tethering and here we are.
I just dont know if it is an issue now with purity rom the same that was going on previously with paranoid android, or if it is something different with 4.4 or t-mobile
I have a Verizon with a grandfathered unlimited data plan. I used to use it a lot with my Samsung Galaxy S3 but a forced update broke this functionality. I would like to upgrade phones and want to know if the Moto X Style/Pure can do subscription-less wireless hotspots? If so, how?
I will venture a guess and say that FoxFi won't work on this. From my small amount of research so far, it sounds like FoxFi doesn't work on Motos. Poeple have also seemed to have bad luck with other app store tethering apps on the Motos. With that said, this being "unlocked," I don't know if the native tethering settings will work.
Either way, I'm assuming if this has an unlocked bootloader and we can root... I'm sure there will be a way around.

Thank you for answering my question. Do you know if it makes a difference if I purchase a Moto X Style vs a Pure?
My assumption is that the Style will be locked by Verizon while the Pure should not be locked? If it is the same thing, I will buy a style since I can get that subsidized with a 2 year plan if this is not the case I will purchase a Pure from a third party.
I have used foxfi in the past with moto phones. I have not needed it since loosing my unlimited data. Those phones were on pre 5.0 android. I have not kept up to see if they have updated it to work on 5.0 and later.

On the droid turbo, nothing worked.
However as long as we get root, which I think will happen. They can modify the apk not to check for hotspot provisions.

Since this is an unlocked phone, wouldn't it work just like how Nexus devices work? I assumed that since you wouldn't have any of Verizon's software it wouldn't do the tethering check.

My next phone.
Heck, I don't even need to root if that's the case.
Me too! If I can tether out of the box, I won't need to root either, though I'll probably unlock the bootloader on day 1, since that wipes the device.
I read elsewhere that it is advisable to do the initial setup over wifi, with no sim, to prevent the device from downloading and VZW software that may prompt the device to check for subscription before starting hotspot.
I know it isn't that hard to watch a tutorial and root, but with OTA's popping up, it would be nice if I didn't need to root.
According to @spotmark in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...o-x-2015-pure-edition-waiting-t3192510/page51 it's confirmed working on Verizon with Unlimited Data, no tethering subscription!!
If you're unlocked and rooted, you don't need Foxfi or any other third party app. Native Hotspot works fine

Not true. I'm with Straight Talk (AT&T) and it wouldn't let me tether. There is a provisioning check. I had to root to get tethering.
Straight Talk is not ATT. It uses other carriers networks to provide service. That's not the same as having serivce directly from ATT. I have Verizon and ATT, tethering worked on both without root.
I'm on Sprint 10+ years and I root and enable native tethering on all of my phones since the Evo.Sprint has never said a word.I average 20-30 GB of data a month .
sprint limits hotspot data
Hi, have a quick question. I am on a simply everything plan at sprint for 70 bucks a month. But they check if I use the unlimited data with my hotspot. If I tether they limit the data to 3 GB a month and charge if I get over that. Is there a way to get around that?

FWIW, some phones no longer check your plan before allowing tether. I'm not certain if this applies to the 10, but my mom just got a Moto G4 Plus and while I was setting it up I decided to check just for fun and it allowed her to do hotspot and the like. Also on unlimited data from Verizon btw.

Many of the rooted ROMs have tethering already activated. If you self-root stock and stay that way, there's a text edit you need to make to get tethering to work perfectly without a third-party app.
See the link here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-htc-10/help/vzw-hotspot-setupunlocked-htc10-version-t3380588
I used to use third-part app WiFi Tether, but the native tether is much faster to load and unload.
FYI, I'm using the unlocked 10 converted to Verizon via the XDA guide and am loving it. I have all the Verizon features and no issues whatsoever ... and didn't have to send off my phone to get it s-off or rooted.
