GPS lock on stock - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got a new note 3 a month ago. Finally Tested out the gps when I went on vacation. The gps could not always lock. It was loose GPS signal every 10 min also. It would tell me to u turn and get off the highway routinely because it thought I was on the wrong street or going backwards. Really frustrating when going long distance. Since it's stock is there a fix. I've tried a few apps. GPS fix, gps status, etc. any options out their that might actually work.

When using the gps apps are you getting locks? How many satellites are you seeing?

have you tried clearing agps?

I turned on the GPS status app. I can get a lock on two out if 19 after 2 min. Waited 5 and it didn't improve. The maps app locked good on my position however.

Did you try to clear the agps data? May help

I cleared it and tested. Then downloaded and tested. Reset all setting and tested. Reset phone and tested. Still only to get 2 sats but not a full lock.
Any other suggestions.

I have the exact same symptoms. When setting up navigation of a trip it will take forever to lock on and after it does it is very slow to update position. Many of the updates to my position are in correct putting me just off the highway on a side street. Sometimes it will have me driving reverse to the direction of my arrow.

I actually uninstalled my weather app and the issue was corrected to a degree. It's not perfect but it does help.

"GPS issue" really just signal interference ?

Yea yea another GPS thread but not complaining GPS locks perfectly fine but i noticed how much stronger and and accurate signal after putting into flight mode,,
Here is my result
in flight mode that's about 20 seconds and without flight mode about 1 min with cell on.
Also with cell on its not stable it bounces around with google map and with flightmode it locks down right to my exact position.

yea people dont have problems with GPS, i thought i didn't. Its one thing to get quick lock its another how accurate it really is
So yea try flight mode and see how much more accurate and stable signal is. It seems the cell signal interferes with GPS signal
BTW this was done with JI6
Also use GPS tool from market and when running to switch between flightmode just hold power button and switch back and fourth that way. So gps tools stays open and you can see in real time the significant impact it has
I think you are right. I did the same test myself a few mins ago. I definitely got a stronger signal faster with flight mode on.
Fair enough, but are competing phones affected in the same manner? Why do we Vibrant owners need to put up functionality disadvantages like this? Ridiculous.

Yea i tested again driving and with very good GPS signal its not as bad but still noticeable.
In flight mode i was at around 10-15 feet accuracy and when i shut off flight mode it climbed to 25-30 turned it on again and drop back down to 10feet
im wondering if it has to do with the modem, JI6 modem seems to drain battery quicker meaning its probably putting out a stronger signal for better connection and im thinking its interfering with the GPS...but IDK this probably happens with older firmwares also

Crappy GPS *With screen shots*

My GPS has been rather worthless, it used to be perfect but even before I rooted it went south. Now I"m on CM6.1 Stable and it's pretty bad. Every thread I see about the issue just says get GPS Status from the market and clear the GPS cache and download assist data. I've had Status since my old phone, and it's not helping.
When looking in status, it rarely locks on. It picks up several satellites but fails to ever lock on. Like this:

The accuracy is HORRBILE, won't narrow down from this:
I was in that bubble at the time, but the very edge of it.
And While moving *At 70mph in this pic, don't worry I was just riding...*, the curser is always crooked like this:
And the only time it would move down the road is when I'd wait till outside of that bubble, and click the my location button again, then it would be another still shot.
It appears that setCPU has something to do with it. Anyone else getting this? Even leaving it at stock speeds gps acts up. I removed the widget, killed Set on Boot, rebooted and now have gps back.

I am running CM 6.1 and am using SetCpu to overclock the processor and have had no problems with GPS. The initial lock took a minute or so, but it was easily able to determine my exact location. I used it yesterday afternoon to navigate to a christmas party and it was able to find my location quickly and kept up with me as I was driving in my car.
Hrm, maybe different kernel? I was on the 1.8ghz one but did a full wipe and put cyanogen with the kernel it comes with, verifying that it didn't let me go all the way back up to 1.8, that fixed lots of my issues but gps still flakey.
I work in photography which takes me all over the city, so I need my gps

Send it back, get a new one.
works perfectly fine without the SetCPU though, so it's not hardware.
My gps always screws up at first too. It'll put me across the neighborhood and say "accurate up to 3200 meters" or something stupid. However, if you tap your little arrow, it should fix itself. That's what I do with mine. Works every time.
I can try that, I'll be riding around today so I'll play with it lol. I've been tapping on the My Location Button in the top right, think that does the same thing?

You can also try using CPU Tuner in place of SetCPU and see if it works that way.
alright, I'll try that. I'm quite android modded out for the day and got homework, but I'll attempt that tomorrow
GPS works perfectly for me on the G2 using Virtuous ROM. Way better than it did on my old Vibrant
I have the same problem!! I accidently hit power save setting, and came back to conservative.
I have even unistalled setCPU, but GPS still not working! help!!

System UI frequent GPS?

Anybody else seeing that the system UI is frequently using GPS?? Approximately every 15 minutes
Why?
Can anybody confirm?

EDIT: I have noticed that this seems to only happen on LTE, therefore leading me to believe that this is related to the problem of Google Now not working on LTE/GSM.

Google Now uses the GPS to check your location if you let it. On my old phone too (AT&T Galaxy S II running AOKP JB) I noticed the same about every 10-15 minutes. I don't think it has to do with LTE though.

Not got the phone yet but does it still do this with lte disabled? Might be its not able to get position data from cell towers on lte so it defaults to GPS instead.

Yes sorry guys I corrected the original post, it's happening every 15 minutes approximately, but not just LTE, on WiFi, LTE, H+.. doesn't matter.

Think I might have figured this out. GPS data location when indoors (satellite's unavailable) is impaired with LTE on.
Can anybody confirm this problem?
Rogers network, Canada.

This doesn't solve the issue it only prevents data being used for GPS lock.
But yes if the problem exists it will stop the battery being drained

[Q] Is there a way to fix my GPS?

Hello all!
My Nexus 4's GPS is simply not locking. Is this a problem for anyone else? Is there Amy way to fix this?
Yes, I'm indoors, but so is my sprint s3 and it gets an instant and accurate lock. I tried a hard reset, but that didn't work.
Is anyone experiencing any GPS problems?
nope, GPS works out of the box here. have you tried testing with GPS test?

Outside it locks in like a minute or two, but I shouldn't HAVE to Go out to get a fix. My s3 essentially locks in less than 10 seconds. The s3 sees 8 more satellites. I might be being too picky.

In order for gps to work properly it needs to be able to see the satellites. Which means a clear view of the sky / outside
That is the reason why GPS signal is shaky in large cities and doesn't work in tunnels period. Stating that your GPS is broken because it doesn't get a lock inside is just frankly silly.

I would agree that it sounds silly but I also understand and agree with his point. My EVO LTE on Sprint locks indoors in NYC within a matter of seconds but my Nexus 4 on T-Mobile pre-paid never locks in exactly the same spot. Outside in the open it is fine and locks quickly so I can't say the GPS is broken but it's certainly not as strong as my EVO LTE.
same here. on T-Mobile. Verizon s3 gets an instant and accurate lock
My GPS locks very quickly, but after about 30 minutes in Navigation, it drops, and I have to turn off GPS (or exit and restart the Nav app), and turn it back on to reacquire satellite lock.
Sounds like you need a replacement, I'm blown away by how fast my N4 locks especially compared to my sensation.

Lol sry super late to respond. When y'all say you get an instant lock, do you mean as soon as you open up maps it find you, or does it find you like 15 seconds later? Navigation wasn't as smooth as I had hoped. Yesterday when using it it lagged behind throughout the whole trip... I'd imagine if I sent the device in to Google it would take foooorever.
I'm also experiencing slow locks.

Perhaps I need to modify the gps.config file in /etc?

It seems this happen only at times. When is working, it's brilliant! I'm not sure if it's caused by gps status....

Do you ever experience any difficulties when you actually need to use gps functionality, such as when driving?
I used to experience the same on my Samsung Galaxy S. While standing still it would take forever to lock, but every time I needed GPS to navigate, it would work just fine. It used to be like that on my N4 as well. Since flashing a different kernel though, acquiring a lock takes about 5 seconds. That's about 10 less than it used to take, and I'm holding a kernel reflash responsible for that
Mine locks in about 3 seconds, bone stock. In my house.
GPS locking can be many things. In the past (my HTC Sensation) this occured most times when using a kernel other than stock. Crypted, a member here did a LOT of testing and different things to get agps locks. You can use his files if need be. But remember, that every time you flash a new rom, that gps.conf file will be replaced with whatever the Rom is bundled with.
EDIT: Off topic...post #666 ooooooooooooooooooo lol
Maybe I should update my gps.config file. Anybody can guide me?
Update :took a look at my file, can't find any ntp server in it. Besides, the sensor usage for GPS is disable ?

For the sake of testing , tested my gps indoor with WIFI connected, got a lock in 30 secs. Good result. Sometimes when I'm driving, it doesn't get a lock even after >100 secs(no latest agps as I don't have data plan) . Baffles me

I had a similar issue with mine. Flashed so many Roms and kernels that didn't help. I'm on maggodins ROM and Franco now which has been perfect. Also try getting a fix with GPS test, set it to keep screen on and let it sit for ten minutes. Apparently it let's it gather agps and satellite data for your region so future locks are better.
