USB fast charge, how to enable? - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im not sure if anyone would be familiar with this, but on my samsung galaxy nexus there was an option that was universal on all kernels called "USB fast charge"
which basically all it did was cancel out the support of file transfer while connected through USB, but in return gave much higher charging speeds through USB. With it enabled my galaxy nexus would charge almost 4x faster.
Is there an option for this on the note 3? I have not rooted yet, but will in the next few days. I understand its up to the kernel dev's and whatnot to implement it in, but is this feature available on the note 3?

We can't flash kernels

oh well, i guess it will be nice not flashing stuff everyday compared to my nexus.

Bootloader Locked, can't flash Kernels, but the Note3 charges pretty damn fast using the Stock Cable plugged into an A/C outlet.
Total Segue here, but as a Brother to two gay siblings and an Uncle to a gay nephew, can we refrain from using the therm "that's so gay" when it comes to something derogatory?

with the wall charger the note 3 came with, reallly fast. Just as fast as you stated. But through USB, slow as molasses, probably 1% every 5 minutes. which is why i was wondering if the USB fast charge option was available. On my galaxy nexus charging through USB, it was just as slow. With USB fast charge turned on, it charged as fast as a wall charger through USB.

Hmmmmm, odd. Does your machine have USB3 ports? I know that's supposed to be good for only speedy file transfers, but I wonder if it also speeds up Charging? I've just never noticed slow trickle charging from my computer. The only time it's slow is when I use a regular USB2 cable in the car....then it's slower than molasses in January.

I do have USB3 available on my computer, but havnt tried it for charging yet. So far my USB charging has been done through my car which is some random usb 2 cable. Which now that i think about it i believe its only a 1 amp charger in my car, if that. It was enough for my galaxy nexus but probably not so for the note 3. The note 3 wall charger is i believe 2.0 amps?
Im wondering if charge rates matter through usb2 / 3.
If i get a 2.0 amp car charger and use it with a usb 2 cable, will i still achieve 2 amp charging speed? Or for the note 3, i have to use a usb 3 cable?

Not sure. My Laptop has a USB port that charges devices even when the Laptop is turned off, but I do know that my Nexus required less juice to charge up, where the N3 doesn't keep up when I charge it in the car, so I think it's the 1 / 2amp question

Slow charging speed via USB

How are those who've got their N10 finding the charging speed? Mine arrived yesterday and has been charging very slowly, as the reviews had said.
In six hours last night on charge whilst left on standby, it charged about 20%. Is everybody else finding a similar situation?
I'm looking forwards to the pogo-pin chargers/docks being released, which will hopefully charge a bit faster! If anybody knows how to hack something together to make use of the faster charging speed on the pogo connection then please do share! :good:
Of course, you have to look at the amperage and watt of your power supply. Even among the AC powered chargers, they vary greatly, and here you are talking about charging this behemoth with a measly powered USB.

If it takes 6 hours to charge 20% on a 2amp charger than that is seriously messed up.

Not messed up, just physics. There's an awful lot of resistance in a 9000MaH battery, and a standard microUSB (or even full-sized USB) connector can't handle the amperage that a faster charge would require. Which is why most big tablets had proprietary connectors up to this point.
But guess what? Google and Samsung knew this, it's why the N10 has one too, we just don't have the cable for it yet.
Pogo charger is coming, supposed to be at least twice as fast. Don't know why it was delayed, but most likely either a certification issue, or worry about Apple suing for it being too much like a Mag Safe connector.

Are the slow speeds people are getting from the wall charger our from a pc connection?
Are you saying a powered USB hub is charging it quicker than the mains charger supplied?
Thank you

I don't even charge phones via normal USB on PC anymore, let alone a tab. I've found the charging time on the N10 to be ok, provided the screen is off and also if I'm downloading something it seems to slow the charging down. Other than that it's not lightning fast, sure, but I'm ok with it. And so much the better when they release the pogo charger.
charged mine over night yesterday from 10% to full wall mains, but when the screen is one it doesn't seem to charge just maintains current charge which is a bit annoying

Try turning anything that uses power off (i.e)...turn the screen brightness the lowest it will go, turn the tablet on airplane mode. Turn the sounds off.
I find that helps my phone charge faster, maybe this will help with the tablet.
Are you talking about charging via USB on a PC, or via the PSU?
Through the PC will be very slow at a maximum of 500mA, but the PSU should be able to power it? My N7 and Galaxy Tab 10.1 had 2A chargers - what does the N10 come with?
I am regretring more and more buying this. I haven't received mine yet but the amount of pixels is kind of ridiculous. I would have been happy with 1920x1200 with that beasyly hardware. Saw a review that said their battery only lasted 4 hours because of the insane power the screen sucks away.
Also the fact that this pogo charger will probably cost $50+ and it is something that should have been standard either way.
Oh Asus infinity..why must your I/O be so god awful. You were almost the perfect tablet

Yeah charging is slow, though not as bad as 20% in 6 hours! I think mine was charging faster than that even when I was using it. I think trade off is worth it though with the microUSB connector.
The iPad 3/4 is no better... Takes forever to charge

Nexus 4 - Xbox 360 charging problem

Hi guys,
currently having a problem with my xbox 360 charging my Nexus 4...
basically i put my nexus on charge (usb cable from xbox 360) over night and it clearly said its charging, so i woke up the next morning and the battery % was as i left it, but it still clearly says charging? this has happen to me twice this week... has anyone else had a problem like this?
forgot to mention, i have always charged my mobile devices using the xbox 360 and never had any problems before...
Maybe try other cables?
I have had similar issues with phones in the past where certain cables worked and some didn't.
accidently gave u a thx I had this problem with all my phones trying to charge them with my PS3 or PC. With my PS it charged 1-2% and with my PC a bit slower than normally. I think its the bad electricity supply over usb

I had similar issues while charging through my laptop, My phone would say charging, meanwhile it would be discharging
I think it has to do with the phone using more power than the port is giving out. Basically some apps you have one your phone is using so much battery that the charger is not charging because the required power to run the phone is greater than the charge is giving. I'm thinking this is becasue the phone has so much RAM that all the background apps are using more and more power. It's like charging a Laptop through your Xbox USB port, the laptop uses WAY too much power for it to be getting charged through a measly USB port.
Nonetheless, I stopped charging my phone through my laptop and just plugged it in the wall. It charges way faster anyway (my charging usually takes 2 hours when it's really low to full battery)
Even if it does charge, it's not likely to charge well; the Nexus 4's charger is 1.2 amps. The Xbox USB ports likely put out less than half that. Unless you have an S model, in which case the rear "Kinect" port is "high-powered," which likely means 1.0 amps.
I'm charging off my AirPort Extreme without issue...albeit it slow. Since I charge at night, it's a non-issue. OP, have you tried swapping USB cable?
Does the Xbox 360 temporarily disable its USB port if you try to pull to much power from them?
The Nexus 4 requires more than what is supplied...
uberSlackr could be right, normal usb ports are 5volts,500mah, so 5 volts standby, you should be able to charge even at a slow rate, windows 7 has an option to turn off usb ports to save power unless you disable it.maybe xbox has a similar power saving function.
samsung s2 max charging rate is at 650mah, my nexus charger is 1.2amps, so 1 amp draws too much.

yes, i've tried changing the cable and its the same... i believe the comments above have explained it much clearly to me and make me understand why its not charging (xbox usb being 500 mah and the phone needs 1.2 amp... so looks like i will have to use my wall charger from now on)
i appreciate the help guys!! :good:

[Q] usb 3.0 charging/mac issues?

Sounds like it has something to do with the Darwin Kernel guys. Apple will probably have to do a patch to fix it.

Hm, well I noticed that if you go to Battery under Settings, it shows as Charging (USB) when plugged to the macbook. However, if you plug it using the wall outlet, it shows as Charging (AC).
Its either in the Kernel of the Macbook, or the Kernel of the GN3. If its the Macbook, well it will probably never happen. If its the GN3 kernel, you just have to be paitient and wait for custom recoveries so we can flash kernels and roms that support FastCharge on USB. USB 3.0 can supply the juice, it just has to be told to.

Think in milliamps yall... Your wall charger that came with the note is 2000mA... The usb3 port on your mac is 900mA... that won't even charge when the screen is on... just enough to keep it from draining... it will charge very slowly (less than half speed) if you power down the Note3.

That's correct, but newer Macbook Pro's have a neat feature. They can provide up to 1600 mA additional current (apple devices e.g. iPad), wich adds up to 2.1A. If there was just a way to disguise a Note as an iPad.

It means that charging faster will reduce the overall life of your battery because the battery and phone doesn't support it. The Galaxy S5 supports USB 3.0 and Qualcomm Fast Charge.
Also, the fast charge on your Ace 2 just means that it will draw maximum power from USB ports. It doesn't change charge speed with a wall adapter.

Use the original cable and adapter. If you think that's too slow to charge, like taking up to 5 hours, that's unusual. Let your carrier or the store check it for you.

[SOLVED] Does the USB cable have to support fast charge?

Is it both the charger brick and the USB cable that support fast charge or just the brick?
I ask because I want to use the longer USB cable from my Samsung Galaxy Tab S but somebody recently told me the cable also has to support fast charge. When connected, the phone says it is fast charging.
Can anybody confirm this?
Thank you.

I used my longer cable I got with my galaxy tab s, and it fast charged fine.
Technically the brick, the cable and where you're plugging it into all play a part. But it's actually only the brick that's fast charge certified.
Granted if you buy a cheap cable, then it might not work. I have several cables that are very thin, and didn't work with fast charging. But they were cheap.
I have numerous white Samsung cables I've used over the years, going back to the one I got with my galaxy S3, and all of them work with fast charging.
If it's a decent cable and not cheap, chances are it'll be fine.
If it says its fast charging, then it is

Ye thats the first thing I checked, but a few days ago someone on these forums suggested that even tho it says Fast charging, it does not fast charge with a "non-fast charging" cable. I guess he was making it up.
