Battery drain question with Android 4.3 - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good evening,
I have read all over that people are complaining about the horrible battery drain and I would be one of them. If I am lucky I will get 12 hours from a battery while at work (metal building with mediocre reception) and 18 hours while outside without any reception problems.
I have been suspecting that an app is running in the background that could be causing the battery drain but I haven't been able to find it. So, I am wondering if I can get some help in finding what might be running to make the battery life a little bit better. Attached are screenshots.
Thank you.

Thought 12 - 18 hours would be a decent time to have on 4.3?
It's more than likely Google Now running in the background so you should try turning that off

Same problem
Hello,
I have exactly the same problem. I did install GE rom on my galaxy s4 for few days. I am a little a "newbi" in this kind of things. Even I spend my afternoon on the forum to find an answer, I am not able to know what I have to do now.
Briefly, here are my stats :
On battery : 8h7m
Screen on : 3h9m
Remain : 5 %
I publish herewith the resume of BetterBatteryStats. If anyone can "interpret" that and tell me if there is something wrong, that would be great !
Vince

I checked and Google Now has been turned off. I also have had Google Maps location reporting turned off (read that might drain the battery).

Using cyanogenmod provides me around 1 and a half days. .... but I usually have to kill all Google services ...

Using Easy Battery Saver on Intelligent Mode I can get about a day or more use, mimimal though, and still have at least 50% battery left.

Good evening,
I have tried running it with the settings suggested and it has not made much of a difference. I took my phone off of change at 5:15 this morning and I am now getting a low battery warning.
Attached are screenshots from Battery Status Plus. Is there anything else I can do?
Thanks.

Not enought info, but seems to be a partial wakelocks problem. More screenshots needed (stock setting battery graphs and partialmwakelocks in battery stats)

Use wakelock detector, that app you are using gives very little useful information

If you have rooted device I suggest to Install "Greenify" app. it close (hibernate) all unused apps when your device is idle (standby)

+1 for Greenify. it really works

Hi,
do you have only battery drains or also random reboots?
the fact is that samsung shipped out a bad serie of batteries (which is confirmed by Samsung) their serial starts with BD
the symptoms of a bad battery are:
Huge battery drain
random reboots
while rebooting the phone hangs at samsungs logo
battery is swelling
phone shutting down while you have an incomming call/sms
when you are the "lucky one" to experience one of the above symptoms please replace your battery asap under warranty
if you don't do this you risk a phone exploding in the pocket of your pants this is not only painfull for your phone but also for "everything else" whats in there

The only symptoms that I have out of that list is huge battery drain so I don't suspect that it is a bad battery.
I took some more screenshots and have attached them. I just installed the wakelock detector and will let you know how that goes.
Thanks for the help

A lot of screenshot but almost no info about battery drains (some info of data ussage, som apps consuption, etc, but nothing relevant)... It would be great if you could post screenshots of
1) settings->more->battery
2) settings->more->battery->touch the little graph
3) settings->more->battery->screen
4) any screenshot for partial wakelocks in better battery stats or that program you are using
First three screenshots are the most important and everyone should post them when a drain problem exists (no needed any third battery management app)

networklocationlocator wakelock

Hi,
Hope someone can help because I'm pulling my hair out over this. I am seeing pretty terrible battery life on my nexus 7 ranging between 3 and 6 hours screen time over a day or two. The culprit is pretty obvious as reported as Google services in battery usage and I can clearly see obscene partial wakelocks from networklocationlocator. This is chewing through battery while the tablet is not in use. I have attached a screenshot of both the standard battery graph and better battery stats. Latitude is not on, I am not reporting location but location services are enabled for Google now etc. Please help. I don't want to have to cripple Google now to solve this issue.
No suggestions at all?
Does this show up under your regular battery stats? I would try to help by offering a comparison, but I have no interest in spending $3 for a battery stat program like you're using.

I'm having similar problems with mine.. poor battery life, and I seem to have almost the same partial wakelock issue, except on the top of my list, I have AudioOut_2, which is really weird, I have no idea what that does. NetworkLocationLocator is the 2nd on my list..
I also have very low screen times ranging between 3-6 hours, way below Awake time. which means its doing stuff in the background..
My regular google battery page looks like yours. Wish I could help.. I will investigate some more.. do some tests.
Ive been thinking of doing a factory reset..see if that helps anything.

I was having the same issue, though the only thing I realized I didn't check was my Google Now settings. Go in there to make sure one or more of the cards aren't GPS happy.
I turned off a bunch of them, and will check again tomorrow to see if that does the trick.
In Common.
My issue is IDENTICAL, this is really a big time problem I hope there is a solution to. I don't have a Nexus 7 tablet, but a Verizon Galaxy Nexus running 4.1.1. This is a Jelly Bean problem. I unplugged my phone from a full charge, turned the screen off, and woke up to 66%.

Got to be a way to shut those things down, this is incredible.

Ridiculous battery drain on standby

It seems that the battery drain on my newest N7 (RMA'd first one) is waay worse than on the other, I'll attach some screen shots of what I mean.. it may be just the WiFi is using a lot more than the other's :S I left it 4 hours alone with WiFi and the battery drained 20+ % which even with WiFi on seems excessive does it not? Is it possible I got one with a faulty WiFi radio? I will be testing tomorrow (or maybe tonight) to see battery drain with WiFi turned off to compare, because it also seemed to drain fast when I was just out and about with WiFi off :/ worried I have bad battery, deep sleep isn't working right (it is going into deep sleep or at least thinks it is from looking at cpuspy), or faulty WiFi... or just too early to judge XD has anyone noticed battery improve over time ? I forget if I did was a month ago I got the original
BTW first screen shot was taken pretty much right as I was leaving for work, so you can compare the battery drain there..
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I doubt it's a bad wifi radio, its probably an app that is syncing like crazy in the background.
I'm currently watching the MediaServer app use a disproportionate amount of battery (14% and rising). I deleted a number of images which must of kicked in the scanner which must be very inefficient.
I also noticed my N7 become very slow at the same time.
Possibly you downloaded a large amount of images/music/etc before putting your device to sleep...

I really wish I could figure out why maps keeps starting a process.. can you check to see how many instances of maps there are ? In particular one running Prefetcherservice.. as for the other comment, media server is sitting at 6%, android is at 14%, and screen at 67%.. though I did copy a bunch of songs and pictures over after the RMA, is there a way to fix these or should I delete them to see if it gets better ?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Sigh, I might just have a bad battery, or preferably poorly calibrated, since another hour of use, just browsing and such, and I'm down 20% more -_- hope I don't have to RMA again

As a side question.. how hot does your tablet get under normal use? Mine has been heating up quite a bit in the battery section i think with just average on browser use :/

Bahaha good one I dunno, the problem is that this is literally my fourth N7 since the other three allll suffered from major screen lifting, so maybe I am looking for something wrong just so i can make sure it's perfect... Though I do think the battery life is pretty weak, I think I may have figured SOMETHING out, the only difference between this and my original is that my original had a huge section of the map of my area downloaded, and since I did that maps hasn't started any additional processes.. so good sign ? maybe ? haha

Yeah this might be a good time to stop looking for trouble and just enjoy the tablet for a while. I drop mine on the charger in the morning and don't ever really think about the battery other than that. Whatever the battery stats say now they won't say in a week and they won't say after you flash to a different ROM. If you have wifi on apps will sync and the tablet will loose it's charge. I'm never far enough away from an outlet to make it much of a concern. So maybe just take a breather, install the Angry Birds and have some fun for a bit. Eventually we'll have ROM's and kernels that make this thing sip electricity but for now I get the few hours a day I need out of it on one charge so I'm set.

You think the battery life will get much better than what it is? My only other android experience is my HTC Desire Z which has a horrible battery as it is so it didn't improve much at all with custom roms
Speaking of improved life through ROMs and kernels, have you noticed any kernel providing particularly better battery life ? I'm on trinity right now, no voltage changing, but underclocked to 1.1 ghz from 1.3
Factory reset, see if the problem continues. That's the only way decide if it's a HW problem.
And my N7 uses effectively 0% battery in standby, it was off the charger yesterday for 6 hours and when I started playing around it was still at 99%. I turn off wifi on screen off, however.
Use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809 to find out what's waking up your phone, the apk is in the second post. Install, charge it up, unplug, leave for 4 hours idle then look at partial wakelocks and alarms.
I saved quite a bit of standby time by disabling location services and Facebook.
If your not using nfc that could save battery?

So it seems like partial wakelock is mostly audioout_2 which i assume comes from me playing a game with music amongst other things?
Alarms says com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox has 50 wakeups, and maps has 38 :S why does maps keep trying to kill me?! and what is the googlequicksearchbox doing waking the tablet up...
Wlan_Rx_wake seems to be the culprit of semi bad battery. Is there a way to prevent the tablet from waking up all the time? Maybe just unsync or turn off WiFi instead?

When my battery drain was bad I had something like 250+ wakeups from maps under the alarms section in only a few hours off the charger and Maps was showing up as the most common reason for partial wakelocks.
I think AudioOut_2 is normal - Im not sure what it does though. Im now at 8+ hours of standby with 99% battery. Under alarms im showing 138 Maps wakeups and 76 from google quick search box. My drain is all gone now though so i assume this is within normal range. The better battery stats thread and a few other threads on XDA have detailed descriptions of the different battery draining wakelocks and possible remedies. Not all wakelocks are bad though.

[Q] Battery defect or rom issue?

Hello!
Sorry I can't post this in the Paranoid Android thread yet. As a noob I can't post in that forum until I have 10 posts so I'm at a loss as to where I should post this.
Anyway, I just put the new 2.1799 PA ROM on my Nexus 7. Unfortunately, I seem to have a serious battery drain when the screen is on. I have read many posts where people claim to have easily achieved 6+ hours of active screen time per battery charge whereas I'm only getting 3-4 hours of active screen time per charge, almost all of it related to web surfing. I have a strong wifi signal and I keep my screen brightness around 20/30 range. I'm not sure if it's the ROM or if my battery is defective.
I have also read about a battery calibration app through a different thread. Is that necessary for the PA ROM? I didn't see anything in the tutorial mentioning a battery calibration.
Included are two pictures, although they aren't very indicative of my problem as my tablet was sitting in my backpack for most the day.
Please tell me I'm just being paranoid! Thank you for the help!

The battery recalibration is a myth, but there is also no harm in trying it.
according to the pics you have attached, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong.
Battery also drains faster if you have too many apps that have services running.
Ex: Facebook.
I know there is a battery warranty, but how bad does it have to be to get it replaced? My battery cannot reach the 9.5hrs of 720p video playback (with headphones in) as achieved by Asus. I can only get 8hrs. From normal usage, I am only able to get 6 hours.
The ROM has less to do with the battery than the kernel does.
I would say try flashing another kernel. The default cyanogenmod kernel that comes with Paranoid Android didn't give me very good battery life.
Franco kernel gives me excellent battery life. Other good ones for battery are Faux or Motley.

That is in the normal range i would say, Companies usually exaggerate.
As suggested try franco's kernel.
He has a free kernel flashing app on the play store.
My issue is with how the battery percentage is running down......
Charge the N7 to max and use it for a good 2 hours and the battery STILL reads 100%.
Even if I then shut down and reboot it still shows 100%, then all of a sudden it will start to drop very slowly at first until it gets to around 40% which it then shuts down and will not reboot, obviously void of any battery cells.
Clearly it's a calibration issue.
This is on a stock non-rooted machine.

Try a factory reset. If that doesn't work, you're more than likely actually looking at it being a hardware issue.

Factory reset was the very first thing I tried when it started playing up.... I'm hoping when 4.1.2 rolls out it may clear it. If not then I'll have to look at doing a root and access the battery file to see if deleting may help.
Thing is a recharge should clear out the battery file stats and calibrate, which clearly it's not.
Apart from this the N7 is flawless so it's staying with me. Running hours is the same, just doesn't give an accurate reading of how the battery is running down.
It's not a big issue.... to be honest I'm more curious than annoyed.

Have you tried installing a 3rd party battery app to see if it registers the correct battery output? This is the one I have used, works good. GL

You do realize that wiping batterystats.bin has absolutely nothing to do with the battery fuel gauge, right? It does not "calibrate" the battery or affect reported charge. The myth of wiping battery stats has long since been debunked by Google's Android engineers. The only info contained in the file is a list of apps that used battery since the last full charge.
The only other thing you could do besides a factory reset is see if 4.1.2 fixes it for you. If not, then it's definitely hardware causing the issue- the battery charge is likely being improperly read and reported by the battery itself.

[Q] Defective battery?

Hi everyone,
I am new in the android world and i am not sure yet how to manage my phone properly. I have a nexus 4 for 30 days now running adroid 4.2.2 stock non rooted and i experience bad battery behaviour. Although i know my phone has medium battery life, the problem i encounter is when i have the n4 sitting idle it uses way too much battery( always with data, wifi, location services and most syncs turned off) and im not sure if its normal and can be fixed with root, some other way etc or i need to go and replace it.I charged my phone last night and after almost 17h with phone just standing by and doing nothing i was down to almost 65%Shouldn't it waste less energy in deep sleep and also be in that state longer?I have made a log using better battery stats just in case someone more experienced could check it out and advice me.Thanks in advance for your help.
It seems like it's fine. You lost 2.1 % per hour according to the log. It might be the facebook app and the facebook messenger that is eating up your battery. Also I think the major culprit for the loss of battery life is your "msm_hsic_host" wakelock. It's been on for 7 hours +. You also didn't have any service for more than 15 hours. Your phone will constantly search for a signal thus it will drain a lot of power.
I would just say root your phone and install a custom kernel that has fixes that will benefit your battery.
You haven't had a minute's good signal reception in those 17 hrs; no wonder you're battery is being depleted..

A good thing you could do is to install BetterBatteryStats. I think it might be a wake-lock (msm_hsic_host) that might be the cause (because of a poor/inexistant signal). I think you better switch your network off when you have this kind of signal or simply deal with it... You could also try Franco.Kernel, it could help a lot your device to deal with this situation.
Link for what I suggested you:
BetterBatteryStats
Franco.Kernel
(You might want to get the stable one, M1. But I would suggest you the nightly one, r121.)

Data is off, same as wifi, location etc

Anyone have bad battery life on g2? Any fixes?

Has anyone been experiencing bad battery life on the g2? When i first got it a month ago it was amazing easily getting 50+ hours with about 6 hours screen time. But over time its been getting worse. I already did the whole stopping the carrier iq and all that, it still doesnt help much. Now when i go to sleep and wake up 7-8 hours later my battery drains 50% or something like that for no reason, no wifi or anything on or synced. I did see some posts about people experiencing bad battery, this phone is supposed to have amazing battery life whats going on? I rooted my phone, still on stock rom, wondering if anyone has fixed their battery issue. Would installing a new rom like aeon v3 help improve battery like its supposed to be? Its getting frustrating, my gs4 had worse battery but at least the standby times werent as bad as they are on my g2. Any fixes for this?
There has to be something running in the back ground draining battery. If not try finding a battery Conditioning Application
Sent from my LG-D801 using xda app-developers app
Based on the above it could be a few things.
If you want to check a few things on the phone side you can:
- install GSAM Battery and let it keep an eye on what's actually using your juice. Then either remove, modify, adjust settings, etc, for whatever is using it. If it's an app... delete it. Reinstall it.
- You can try a factory reset
If neither fix it then you can try another ROM, but if your battery is just as bad with a factory reset I'd lean towards the battery. Maybe you have some bad cells.
I've had mine for a bit, and I only lose a little bit if not touched overnight.
My current setup:
- Madhi 4.4 KK ROM (1/18 build)
- Obviously rooted with the above
- Greenify on all my non-necessary apps (hangouts, weather and one other app spared from this)
- All my apps auto-sync features are disabled since I just run it once in a while, and things like mail / etc I don't need push anyways
I get pretty solid life even after a few moths of use now.

first, install betterbatterystats and look for wakelocks, try reseting the device. batterylife also depends on how you use the phone...i can get 9hrs on screen time reading books with still 15% left or drain it in 3-4hrs playing games.

Yes i have downloaded and used gsam battery app. I dont see anything unusual in my stats, also using better battery stats, its been in deep sleep for most of the time, and it doesnt say the phone was on or running when the screen was off. But for some reason i wake up and my battery is decreased by 50% again....I am using greenify and hibernating alot of those annoying apps. I am stopping apps that are running . And on the phones battery manager android system is first with 34% but it says its only been running 11min, and no gps is listed. And my screen on time was 2 hours those are what i foudn when i woke up with 20% left, at night it was 70%. I seriously think my phone is messed up when im using it its not that bad, but for some reason when i go to sleep and leave it alone it dies for no reason....

Ah i am using better battery stats, and nothing seems to be out of the ordinary, its been in deep asleep for most of the time. And the phone doesn't say to be on when it wasnt supposed to. Same thing on the phone battery manager it says android system is 34% with 11min being on,and screen is 2 hours. When i woke up my battery went form 70 to 20%.....i am using greenify, and stopping running processes, like carrier iq an other apps. i dont know whats wrong...this is getting frustrating, i have also factory my phone already, it was fine for a few days but now its constantly draining like crazy at night...i love this phone, but i think mine might be messed up! You think changing the rom would make it go back to normal? Even though my phone isnt supposed to be behaving like this with stock...

I definetly would try it. Also you could try different kernel. But its beginning to sound like there could be a defect in your battery. If nothing helps i would send the phone to LG and let the battery replace. You are still in warranty, right?

my battery has a problem too..
when my phone is idle sometimes the battery level increases by 1 or 2.
when im playing heavy games like gangstar 4 the battery decreases every 2 mins and the temperature reaches 40°C. and when im just browsing it decreases every 3-5 mins with a temperature of 34-36°C. and when im watching kuroko no basket (wifi off) every episode just consume 2-3% of the battery (24 mins. = 2-3%)
and the temperature is about 28-30°C.
I think my battery drain problem depends on the temperature
