For some reason my phone seems to work great for a good week or so.. then all of a sudden out of nowhere.. It freezes. Have to press and hold the power button down to power cycle for it to respond.. Then when it reboots... Processes crash left right and centre. (This is after doing a firmware upgrade from stock rom as previously ha this problem too)
I tried wiping the cache in CWM and when it did that it rebooted the phone. I went back into it wiped it again.. wiped fine.. Also wiped Dalvik.. Its doing it Android is Upgrading thing.. but it only seemed to last for a good few hours and it was hanging again and has become totally unusable. Seems like it is degrading too from each reboot.
This surly can't be a ROM problem? Anyone else haven't the same problem? I'm using version Echoe 5...This is with an Australian base phone too..
I have tried both CWM and TWERP to do the installer and end up with the same effect.
Now when I've done a clean install factory wipe etc it somehow starts services and then reports a service has stopped.. and eact time its a random and different service.
i had same problem with my galaxy s4 , did full wipe , installed other rom , tried rooting it and installing custom one ... but same problem, then i called samsung customer service and they told me that my phone have some kind of faulty rom in it and need to be re flashed by them in order to work. that was no no for me and i traded in my s4 for note 3. so try and contact samsung customer service and explain it to them and good luck
Also check your battery. maybe that is the problem
sry for my bad english, but hope this helps
Flash this, it will probably stop your rebooting problem

It could be something to do with your EFS hence why the problem is not going away even when wiping

If you made an EFS backup I would try restoring that. If not, or that doesn't work, I would then try and restore the phone to a fully factory condition (using KIES). If it is still there after fully restoring the phone to factory settings then I would probably guess it's some kind of hardware malfunction.

Just conferming.. what is KIES? I tried downloading the Telstra firmware from sammobile... waited 4 hours for it to download... Flashed that using Odin 3.09.. Only selected PDA and the MD5.. let it do its thing... And even with that it was throwing up errors? Is that what you mean by KEIS?

KIES is kind of like the iTunes for Samsung devices. Apart from all the features we don't care about, it allows you to enter in your device model and serial number, where it will then download the latest ROM for your phone model & region and flash it for you. It is useful for going to complete stock, especially if you are not sure which ROM to flash to your device. It don't think it trips KNOX, unlike Odin which does.
Flashing ROMs via Odin for the note 3 has left people with problems related to their EFS as well, which I don't think you will find with KIES.
In short, KIES is the 'Official way' of going back to complete stock. If after going back to complete stock you still experience problems then I'm guessing it's a hardware problem.
Note that I haven't used KIES before myself though

OK got Kies... how do I make it do the firmware install? If I go Tools -> Firmware install and initialise.. it says this device doesn't support it? Is there another way? Am I missing something?
The most common error I get is "IndexService has stopped working"... Might this give someone a clue.. I still personally think that its a faulty RAM issue wth the phone?
Have you got an SD card in the phone? Try removing it.
Isn't the Indexing service part of s-finder? maybe it's finding a file that it doesn't like, probably in an area that's not overwritten when you flash.
I took it out before and it didn't make any difference.. It got to the stage that the phone wouldn't boot any more.. I took it back to Telstra to get a replacement.

The problem seems known and no solutions on the net.
I ended up taking my phone back and saying I want a replacement phone.. They sent it back and it was away for a 24hr period and they replaced it.. I know Telstra does it here in Australia.. even though my phone was KNOXed... To me it was a hardware fault and had nothing to do with software.. but I know phone tech seem to have an ego problem with phone apparently never having hardware faults.

Just got round to connecting my UK unlocked and unbranded phones4u GS2 up to Kies on Windows.
I've got a message that a new firmware is available:
Current: "PDA:KDA /PHONE: KDF / CSC:KD1 (XEU)
Latest: "PDA:KDD / PHONE: KDH / CSC:KD1 (XEU)
I don't get anything when checking for updates on the phone itself. Has anyone else updated? Is it safe? What's the changes?
Phones4u had their SGSii stock earlier than anyone else and seems to have KDA firmware. Mine from O2 the other day already had KDD as default... not sure of the changes tbh!
I got my SGS II from Carphonewarehouse in London SIM FREE. The firmware I have after pressing *#1234# is
PDA I9100XWKDD
PHONE I9100XXKDH
CSC I9100XEUKD1
build info: Tue Apr 26 09:00:32 KST 2011
I got mine from p4u . And also just had the update notification . I have just done the update . Like other have said i cant see anything thats change .
Anyone got any ideas's what the difference is between the firmware ?
Anthony
Could this have anything to do with the GPS being off for some people? I noticed dk206 has an updated firmware and gets great GPS lock/accuracy.
Edit: Unless its great battery stats that dk206 gets? Seen that many different threads past few days...
Can one of you capture the firmware from the KIES cache when it's downloaded and post it up here?
I see KDF is available to download. Does this bring many changes?
no update available here.
mines P4U stock and on KDA
odd..
Diabolous, have you checked for updates on the SGS2 itself, or when connected to Kies?
My P4U bought one reported as up to date when checking in Settings > About Phone Check FOr Update, but the first time I hooked it up to Kies (yesterday) it flagged an update (KDD).
Can one of you guys using KIES go into your registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Samsung\Kies\DeviceDB\
Look for the number that correspond to your device and post the HIDSWVER key details and Product code details for me before doing the update.

Let me do this now for you. And just to clarify I haven't tested gps properly yet. I have decent battery life 20~24hrs better than sgs 17~20hrs with my normal day to day usage.
Also I did not update anything. I got my firmware like this straight outta the box frim cpw. But cpw has always usually put stock uk rom, for the original sgs anyways.

This has killed my phone.
CPR is in progress. Transferring the firmware to my phone failed and now it won't boot. Avoid.
Update: It's alive! Samsung's emergency firmware recovery fixed it, and installed the new firmware in the process - without losing any data. Phew!
My Quadrant scores seem to be up a few hundred (3200 to 3500) but that could be the usual variation. I find Quadrant changes quite a bit between runs.

i am from the united kingdom and my galaxy y has 2 stock firmwires.
what i wanted to know is what is the differance between the two firmwires as one has latest version in kies and one doesnt, so what does that mean?
is the latest not legal samsung software as it's not in kies, i dont understand? the difference between them
Sorry if i sound thick i just like to understand abit more about it.
source:- http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&model=GT-S5360&pcode=XEU&os=1&type=1
ALSO
is it safe to charge my galaxy y over night, can it reduce battery life or does it stop charging when it's fully charged and wont damage the battery in anyway?
First one is latest jan 2012 and second one dec 2011.so both are offical.
And do not put ur phone on charging for long time i.e full night.it can damage battery and one user got some screen problem as he used to charge his phone overnight...

Thanks for your posts, at the moment i am using december, does that mean if i update to the January one i wont be able to update via kies after?
i am on the stock software and i can't update my phone via kies to the january version? if i flashed it would that void you're warranty or is it possible to update by kies it says that latest version in kies in december so what is the january version for?
You would think samsung would have a chat support for these types of questions.

yours could be later than jan, but here in the UK it says Jan 2012 is our latest firmwire.
The JB update just started rolling out in India a few days back and this method helps you update your Galaxy S3 to the official JB release using Kies(Easiest and the safest way) Though people over at this thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33921598#post33921598 ) do say the servers are sometimes down and I personally think this was take a LOT of time.
Also, This should work in India, GS3 owners in other countries(GLOBAL + US VERSIONS) can give this a try to check whether they have the update or not. No harm done either ways.
I'd like to thank jshashwat93 for this method as I saw his post on the aforementioned thread and that's how I got my update.
NOTE: This method is pretty safe until you don't remove the phone from your computer while it's updating in Download mode. So if you do somehow manage to screw up your Device, I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE
Here's how it goes:
1. Disconnect your phone from the computer, if you have it connected and start Kies.
2. Click on Help->Check for updates. This Updates Kies. It's required for Updating the Firmware of your phone.
3. After this is done, you might want to restart Kies, and from here on, we shall get to the Update process.
4. Go to Tools->Firmware Upgrade and Installation.
5. It should ask for your Model No. Enter: "GT-I9300".
6. Now it should ask for your Serial No. as Shown in the 2nd picture attached.
7. Now power off your phone and remove the back cover and then the battery.
8. The battery compartment has the IMEI number and the serial number near the Barcode. You require the Serial number.
9. The serial number is written as "S/N: XXXXXXXXX". That's an 11 character number. Write the "XXXXXXXXXXX" in the Serial Number field in the Kies pop up. (Do not write the 'S/N:/ Part)
10. Non Indian users, this is the step that makes it or breaks it for you, the next screen shows you whether or not there is an update for you and from here on, the software will download some files(Shouldn't take long)
11. After a few agreements, you should see the software now asking you to attach your phone in Download mode.
12, Make sure your phone has at least 80% battery because I am not sure whether the battery is charged in Download mode or not. And this step might take a while. The phone, from here, SHOT NOT BE DISCONNECTED or you will spoil your phone(Brick i even. Don't know the consequences)
13. By now you must havee seen that all settings and apps will be erased(In one of the agreements) so it's better to back up your data. ALTHOUGH, here's the interesting part, after my update, I saw all the apps and EVERYTHING was carried forward as it is so cheers to SAMSUNG for that.
14. ALright, Power off your device and press and hold the VOLUME DOWN+HOME BUTTON+POWER BUTTON to enter the download mode.
15. The phone should now display a warning(Check image). Press the volume up button to Continue.
16. You are now in download mode.
17. Connect your phone to your computer and start the installation(The onscreen instructions will guide you. I couldn't post screenshots because I have already updated my phone. Sorry)
18. Sit back and relax this may take a while I left it overnight and slept like a baby(LOL). Though make sure, YOU DO NOT DISCONNECT YOUR PHONE
19. You should have Jelly Bean after the update is done. No need to restart or anything as for me, it was already rebooted. And all my apps were carried here. Works absolutely perfectly. CHEERS Samsung
NOTE: This does not void the Warranty because it's been updated through Kies. So if something DOES go wrong, and you can't find a way to solve it on XDA, you can always get it repaired. Still, Don't blame me if the guy won't repair your phone.
Have fun with your new Update. Cheers
If I helped in anyway, Which I hope I did, HIT THE THANKS BUTTON INSTEAD OF JUST SAYING IT!!!!!!

Can't be. I live in Pune and I updated it just yesterday. Its working just fine for me. Try to see if your lies is updated or not. And probably it hasn't been rolled out for your location. I'm Indian too man. And I am on 4.1.1 just updated last night. I guess ota is rolled out to specific regions at a time so their servers don't crash so I don't expect people getting otas soon. Yes it will work.
You entered in Caps "GT-I9300" right?
See the screenshot. And check whether you entered the Correct Serial Number. All should be in caps and do not add the "S/N:" in the beginning.
So did anyone in Kolkata get the OTA update?
Also, this method probably woks but due to my slow internet connection, I don't know if I can stare at my phone that long being in download mode.

It works partially for Poland (T-mobile). It found an update, installed it, but the 4.1.1 for polish T-mobile version is surely broken. I haven't got bar at the top of the screen (the one with battery usage, time) and I couldn't set wallpaper (only black screen as background). I'm not an expert with this but I think it have something to do with odexed/deodexed ROM in the update.
I had the same issue when tried to manually install first leaked JB OTA. Good thing I could root phone and restore backup.
BE SURE TO MAKE A BACKUP BEFORE TRYING THIS METHOD!
Hi All:
I am not experienced with smart phones and therefore would like to seek your advice/assistance regarding an issue that came up with my S 4 GT-I9505 International.
What happened:
- The 4.4 Kitkat update came out on my phone through my provider (Rogers, Canada)
- I downloaded the update via Wifi and began its installation at a relatively low battery
- During the update, precisely after the reboot while the % bar with the android guy was filling up, I plugged in my phone to ensure it would not die (wall outlet)
- Coming back to the phone after some time I noticed it was OFF
My phone is the international version, unlocked and was going to be sent to Europe (Portugal) based on the language of the manual and the fact that it came with a North American adapter.
What I have done since then:
- The phone turns on and the Samsung words appear on the screen with the model number and then it goes BLACK
- When plugged in, it turns on and shows the ''very low'' battery symbol and stays like that
- It is recognized through USB but does not connect to Kies
I have done the factory restore and cache wipes, those work fine. But when I do go to reboot the device I notice that "Error!" appears under the little android guy momentarily before booting up.
Any help is well appreciated. Thanks so much.
Jay

Jay

Are you really sure your charger works? Are you sure your battery is not damaged? Try with a different charged battery and you will get your answers.

I think it's a case of soft brick..
If your warranty is intact then go to Samsung care they will fix it for you.
Don't tell then what exactly happened. .
Say I updated and it's not working..

Thanks for the replies everyone. I will attempt these solutions.
Does anyone advise against going to one of those kiosk style cellular repair shops?

Before doing that, try to buy a new battery and test it. In the worst-case you will get a new replacement battery ; in the better case you will save a lot of money trying to repair something that it is not needed to be repaired.

Hey all,
Good news. So I got on SamMobile.com, grabbed a UK 4.3 Android file and used Odin to flash it onto my unresponsive S4. It worked like a charm and the phone is back up and running.
Just a few questions as I am new to "flashing":
So now that I will have to flash UK releases of the latest firmware as my Canadian network provider will probably brick my phone every time they release the latest firmware, should I simply wait for the internet to have the latest firmware of my regions version and flash it every time via odin?
Also, is flashing over time going to decrease my phone's performance in terms of processing speed and memory (RAM)?
Finally, any suggestions that are different from what I plan to do as described above?
Thanks to everyone who contributed, I "thanked" the posts.
Jay
You can flash the latest release of your region nd then follow ota updates .....

Aren't OTA updates from my network provider which would mean that installing their firmware update would result in bricking? May you please elaborate?

Well OK I use my phone in Canada but since its a UK phone I went out and got the UK firmware. So now when I get the latest firmware update (4.4) from Canada, won't it brick?
I mean that is what happened last time...
The phone is unlocked and I have never rooted it. Just used Odin to throw on the firmware.
Thanks.

Ya I mean I did updates BEFORE the last one so that got me thinking, maybe it WAS the battery...
So do you think its safe that I go and try to update my firmware from my network provider on top of the UK firmware I put on it just last night?
Thanks!
U can flash any firmware on any othe bt just cant downgrade from 4.4.2 if u flashed it

No I mean like, is it safe if I just do an "update" in my settings on the phone? That won't brick my phone if my battery is charged?
Yes updating in this way is the safest but u should have adequate battery

Hmmm, I think it's normal, as we know there are millions s4 out of there, which means OTA is coming out part by part, like some user update in day 1, some user in day 2, some in day 3, and so on, because not matter how powerful server and bandwidth they got, I don't think it could possibly withstand the pressure of updating millions device at same time or very short period...
