How to format SD without leaving mtp - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
I am trying to get root access for my MF3 S4 with the new method floating around. I've got everything except I don't have my memory card formatted to ExtFAT and because of that I don't have permission to enter the commands in terminal I need to type the ./pwn command...
I don't have a SD card adapter to plug in to my pc and I don't have any idea even though I've searched all day on the internet..
How can I format my SD card with windows while mounting via MTP? I can't use any of the USB Mass Storage apps on the market because they require root.. The very thing I'm trying to acquire.
Any help is appreciated and if I missed a tutorial somewhere around here I'm sorry, I did search.

Maybe try Clock work mod. Try Odin flashing the CWM file in the Android Dev forum. I dont think you need to mount it to windows also.

Sorry,
I think Android by default is in extFat format. So you can directlly go ahead and do Chainfires superuser root usin Odin,
however you can still use CWM to format /system , Reset Data(Factory Reset)

After I FAT/EXT2 my memory card, can I access on WinXP? (Also upgrade)

Hey all, question, I dont know if its my setup since I have the drivers that let me read linux formatted drives in WinXP however, after I got the memory card formatted to the fat/ext2, if I try to connect my G1 to the USB and "mount" it doesnt show up in WinXP to work with. Now in Ubuntu (Which is where I worked on the format etc) it shows up fine. Just need to know if there is a solid way to work with the Fat part of it in Windows to add files or If ill need to use Ubuntu now. Also I wanna upgrade my 2GB to a 4GB, can the files just be transfered over to the 4GB and the G1 would still read everything just fine? Or would doing that screw something up? Just making sure before I do. =)
Thanks for any help.
Poke anyone? I know alot of you have your apps installed on the SD. =/
this thread should of been added to ONE of those APP2SD thread.. might as well format the whole SDCard FAT32 and EXT2...
Fat32 - copy everything to ur comp
EXT2 - they are just apps that u can go to market and download it agian.
Well I do have it Fat32, But the question is, can I transfer the Fat32/EXT2 to another memory card formatted the same way? Or do I have to redownload?
Then still is the issue why I cant connect it to WinXP, Wont show up. =/
nope..
i have xp too and it won't show either.. like the new build(haykuro6.0) i wanna try it out, but i have to go to the process to backup my apps on the SD.. and just format the whole SDCARD.. but nah
this might help.. it tells u how to back up ur apps to the FAT32 part of the SDcard
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3808858
im clueless on restoring the apps back
Well let me specify, I have the fastboot drivers put in too since one needed that to mod the g1 and push files etc. So unless there is a way to do both? So I think with the drivers for fastboot and so, it wont read as a removeable storage.
Now I can use Ubuntu (Linux) to Move the EXT2 to another EXT2 but not sure if the cache and data will work the same?

ClockworkMod and mounting USB?

Hey all,
So I just ran ClockworkMod (2.5.13) and wiped my Vibrant in preparation for the new Bionix. I have found that on my phone I had to wipe sdcard too or it wouldn't wipe fully. The problem: ClockworkMod won't let me mount USB storage or mount sdext so I can't figure out how to get the new ROM on the phone. Voodoo is also enabled and I can't seem to disable it without a working ROM on the phone.
When I plug the phone into my PC the "H" and "I" drives automatically pop up but are inaccessible. Mounting USB storage in ClockWorkMod appears to do nothing.
Any ideas? Thanks!
ohhhhhhhhh
I had the same problem last night but i thought my PC was acting up. I guess it has to do with CWM, but idk why.
What i did was copy the ROM on my external sd card, then put it on the phone and move them to internal sd card
Hope that help
you can use adb to push file to your phone.

CWM won't let me mount SDEXT. Is there something special I have to do to get this to work?
You may have to pull the sd card and use an external card reader.

ADB did the trick. I didn't realize it could push to the phone like that. Easy cheesy. Thanks!
And as for external SD card reader - this doesn't do anything to help transfer a file to the phone. Recovery was unable to mount SDEXT. I can't find any documentation on the matter, but I assume this is a Vibrant-related issue?
Hi, I just have the exact problem on my galaxy note. Trouble is that I can't find a way to connect to my phone through ADB. It just isn't listed when I type "adb devices". I would appreciate any help so I could "push" a rom and be done with it.

Check Applications/Development/Enable USB Debugging. If that is on, make sure you have the necessary drivers on the PC.
As for mounting via CWM, that should work if CWM gives the option. Again, check drivers on PC.

[Q] Catch-22 eLocity A7

I have installed A7Comb rom which mostly does a good job. The biggest problem is that external sdcard and usb are inaccessible. If I choose to go back to 3.01 where I had this capability, access to external sdcard is required to flash the old rom. Am I screwed or are there any other alternatives?
ooorah
im not positive, but if i remember correctly you have access to the external sd (using Root Explorer or something like it) there is /Mnt/sdcard check in there im not sure the exact directory, but im pretty sure it was in there when i was using A7comb, then you can copy and paste the update.zip to the root of the sd
Let me know if you can't find it, i will flash A7comb real quick to give you a hand
Catch-22 eLocity A7
smallba, Thanks for the reply. Can root explorer be used to do the rom flashing? I can get the 1.41 rom on the sdcard using my desktop, but the A7 can't see it. I've tried to flash using the start button routine, but it never recognizes the sdcard and sends me back to boot. Then I cant boot until I remove the sdcard. Also, even though I'm rooted and have superuser, root explorer always fc's. What a mess.

Do you have Sdhc adaptor physically plug the micro sdhc in the computer and then move the update zip to the sd?
What kind of sdcard are u using?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Thanks for your reply. At /mnt/external_sd the sd folder is shown as empty.
ooorah
smallba I connect via usb to my desktop using a Targus adapter. The sdscard is Kingston 2gb formatted fat32. I cut/paste update.zip to the sd card.
ooorah
Do you have a cell phone to try the sd card in? I just want to make sure it is not corrupted, you have flashed before using this same sdcard?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Yes I've used this sd card to flash on my Acer A500. I'm sure it's ok.
ooorah
What does it do when you put in and pull out the sdcard?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
When sdcard is installed I look at externai_sd and it's empty. I cannot reboot until the sdcard is removed. BTW, various mount apps I've tried fail to recognize the presence of a sdcard.
ooorah
I know I been asking many questions, but it recognized in the accer?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Yes, sdcard was recognized in Acer 500. Content was shown under external sd.
A7
What rom are you trying to flash back to?
I had some issues reverting back from A7Comb.
I think I had to flash back to stock first.
Re: your previous post, how can I flash back to stock if I can't find external sd?
ooorah
Cant read SD
I reloaded my copy of A7Comb and will play around with it to see if I run into the same issue. If the SD can't be used, it may be possible to connect via USB/ADB and push the stock images.
However, I have never used ADB with the A7, only with other devices. I will also try and figure that out to see if that's a viable option. Will need to find the drivers and get those loaded. Been meaning to test ADB with this device anyway.
Thanks DANO, I'd appreciate the help.
ooorah
I'll do what I can, I'm no expert, but I am very comfortable with ADB and have no concerns about messing with my A7. I've been meaning to do this for a while anyway. Will probably take me a few days to get get the A7 connected to ADB as its USB port doesn't play nice, and there are some tricks to getting windows/ADB to pick up the device. I'm also gonna try and lookup Dexter to see if he can give me some tips on doing this.
I used ADB last March and rooted my CRUZ 7" tablet. Whether it will work with a usb connection to eLocity A7 will have to be tried. I'll play around to see if I can get it working. If I get that far I'll have to wait for further instructions.
ps I can use a usb keyboard with no problem. ooorah
Yeah, keyboards, thumb drives, etc. should all work as the A7’s USB slot is set to host mode by default. The trick is flipping the switch to slave/device mode so we can use ADB to communicate with it.
Dexter’s A7Comb Rom had an App “OTG” for doing this (with a reboot), but when I tried it out, my Windows 7 box only saw the device but still didn’t fully communicate with it (ADB didn’t see it at all). Most likely due to the lack of a driver, or rather telling it where the driver was.
I’ve got some info on doing this, and I plan on trying to get this up and going tonight. Once I get ADB connected to the A7, I would think we should be able to push a new recovery image or something along those lines to fix whatever happened with the SD Card.
Just curious, have you tried a factory reset, data wipe, etc. (then reboot back into recovery), and tried to run the update.zip from the SD Card. I doubt this will work, but the A7 re-writes the recovery image with each update, therefore if something got corrupted, perhaps a wipe will fix whatever is broken in recovery by way of re-writing it. I’m not sure if recovery gets replaced with just a data wipe/reset, but if you don’t mind resetting your device it might be worth a shot.

Recover deleted photos deleted from internal memory

Hello everyone. Im sorry maybe i didnt open the discussion in the right place. I use galaxy s4 and suddenly i deleted my camera photos. And all of them were in internal memory of the phone. No ext sd card i have on my phone. The big problem is how to get the pictures back. I have root acces and running on 4.4.2 pls i need it very urgently.if anyone has idea pls right here or message me here thank u all reading this
Someone else had this issue, but in their case it was a factory reset. My recommendation to that person was to try Recuva, but unfortunately, Recuva doesn't detect the existence of the S4 at all. I did a quick google search and found an alternative that may work for you, here. Your S4 must be rooted for it to function.
I have not tried this, so I do not know if it will work. I changed the save location to the MicroSD card through the Camera's settings, as well as enabled write access to the MicroSD for all apps, so I have little to no need of this program.
Thank u. I think one more. As u said recuva doesnt detect the existence of s4. Is that possible to make something on a phone to mounts its internal drive as usb drive on a computer then we can scan it with any recovery program.
i dont think you can get your pictures back lol. since its called ''DELETE''
Not true. When a file is deleted the pointers to the file are changed to mark the space the file occupied available for writing, however the file is still present on the drive. Programs like Recuva work because the file isn't overwritten when deleted. However, Recuva doesn't recognize MTP devices. The only way Recuva can recognize a MTP device is if the transfer protocol is changed to UMS. Note that PTP mode on the S4 is NOT sufficient for the purpose.
Well how to change the transfer protocol to UMS? Any ideas?
SG USB Mass Storage Enabler will work as long as you're not on Android 4.4.x, according to the developer. Otherwise you'll need an app like Airdroid to do the job. There are other apps on the Play Store that may work.
EDIT: Some added research here seems to indicate that doing this will not work on the internal storage, as the internal storage has not been a separate partition since Android 3.0 according to Google. Try it, but I suspect @xDroidZz is correct, though not for the reason he thinks.
One more interesting is that possible to mount internal.file system over recovery? I have cwm recovery . I mean to mount file system through recovery before system boots and recover files then. Is that idea possible?

Help! TWRP recovery and SD card problem.

I just added a new 128gb SD card to my phone.
It recognised it, formatted it, and moved some stuff over after setting up.
This was all done by the system.
The problem is, now in recovery, I can't find my download folder. I don't recognise the folders in recovery when I click install.
I can't find any folders I recognise.
Can someone please help.
I think you have formatted sd card and made it internal storage... TWRP goes nuts when sd is formatted as internal and can't read it
Don't worry everything is alright and if you want to backup or flash via TWRP then you have to copy ur files in root i.e. real internal storage on phone and it will show up.
Also you can attach pen drive formatted in fat32 so you can copy or flash from it

You might want to try test twrp. It has adopted storage fixes I think hashbang said.
