Hi
I'm having serious problems with my network signal on NY N4.
Its not the sim card as I have tried a few.
The signal drops to zero bars regularly.
I don't want yo send it back as I have a small crack on the back glass case.
Would a custom ROM increase signal or anyway yo fix this?
If I opened it up is there a way of fixing antenna?
I'm loving the phone apart from this.
Thanks
No. The radio deals with reception, not the ROM. Also, I wouldn't touch that antenna. A lot of engineering goes into them. Perhaps an RMA is in order?
Is it just one location that you have this problem? Or do you have the problem everywhere, even where others on the same network have a full signal?

If you don't know what you're doing, dont mess with the antenna. Besides there's no way you can do to it to increase reception.
You can try and add this to your build.prop.

Thanks for reply.
I have boot loader unlocked and I'm rooted.
Is it easy to flash a different radio?

search for the radio zip files and you can flash through recovery twrp or cwm
Signal strength on mobile phones might be exactly the same, but the signal bars display a different amount of bars.
I've read up on this and understand it is supposed to be normal, but man does it make my phone so much worse. Every single time a page loads it has to switch from 3G to H. My reception seems like it sucks so bad because of this. Sometimes it doesn't switch. I get good bars everywhere I go, but it feels like I have terrible reception.
I've never understood radios and such. I'm rooted with the stock rom. Would this be better if I tried cyanogenmod with a different radio? There has to be a fix for this issue.
If you solve this for me, I'll kiss you through the internet.
I don't think kissing anyone over the internet would make them want to help you any more
Its how the phone works, its supposed to switch to 3G to H. H comes on when data is more active.
What radio are you using?

the bars are for your gsm radio, telephone calls. they dont give you an idea on data speeds. do a speed test to see how good of a data connection you have.

I knew the bars are for phone calls, but I'm in the city of Chicago and have a hard time believing my data is as bad as it seems. I'll have plenty of times where it shows 3G connection and doesn't switch to H, therefore no data comes through. I've had plenty of times where I didn't believe I wasn't getting data, so I reset my phone and sure enough - data!
I do believe something could be wrong with my specific phone. I might need to try a full reset or flash cyanogenmod. I just didn't want to do that. Especially without checking with you genius's beforehand!

How can I check radio version?
I'm running 4.2.2. Baseband version M9615A-CEFWMAZM-2.0.1700.48 Kernel version 3.4.0-perf-g7ce11cd [email protected] #1
Build number JDQ39
Sorry for the delayed response. It is making me wait 5 minutes between posts, even though I'm not a new user and this is MY post. I haven't posted much, but I'm not new Maybe the mods will see this and lift my restriction

The radio is .48.. Baseband is Radio. You can go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2087227 and try out other radio to see if you get better reception.
If you're in a TMO 4G LTE area you can try activating LTE to see if you'd like it any more.

I can do that, but I'll first have to figure out how to do it. For some reason my drivers say they don't work and it won't let me flash clockwork mod. I was going to make another post about it after I figured this out. Do you think radio could be the issue?
Also, I am on Tmobile, but I thought LTE didn't really work since it was ATT band 4 or something and only very specific areas had it?

Well, I just found out my APN was the one used when you are on LTE. I changed it to the non LTE version and will test over the next few days. If that was my problem, I'm going to be upset at the Tmobile lady who put in that info.
Please do let us know if it's any better after using the epc APN.
If you flash to the .33 radio, the LTE will turn on and it's very good at holding a data connection. It's just when it's not available and my phone connects to hspa+. I have similar problems as you. My signal indicator works great and its blue but no internet. I'm wondering if i'll need to keep switching apns. I hope not.

Well, I did my commute this morning and there really was no change. It could be a combination of poor data reception areas and slow switching. I'd like to try to flash a new radio, but I don't know how. I can start a new thread about this, but I'll at least mention my problem here. I installed the Nexus 4 Toolkit and went through all the steps to make sure the drivers were installed correctly and such. I did this a long time ago when I rooted the phone. But something is wrong and it doesn't let me flash clockworkmod. It tells me to go through the steps again, which I have tried.
Is there a way to flash a new radio without clockwordmod?

I've been tempted to try messing with lte on my nex 4 as well...live in chicagoland...just worried about how good the coverage is and how well the phone would perform outside lte coverage since I drive all over the tri state area and need my phone to be stable for work.

Lte is amazing in Chicago but not as strong in Chicagoland. However, hspa+ is garbage in Chicago but better in Chicago land.
As for cwm, I prefer twrp. You can just download goo manager from the app store and it will install twrp for you. As far as I know you need to use a custom Rom that supports the older radios or else your calling might mess up. I use aokp.

I actually tried that a few weeks ago, before I knew what I was doing. I wasn't able to flash it because I didn't have a custom recovery. I'm glad I went to CyanogenMod though. It seems to be faster and there are little things that make it better than stock.

Yeah CM has a lot of nice additions, Paranoid is pretty slick...been a fan of that one on multiple devices. It's built around swapping ui dpi...so you can set your phone to act like a phablet or tablet per app...ie...make gmail look like it does on your tablet on your phone. Let's you drop out the soft keys and replace them with a pop up slide wheel/etc and has a lot of the AOSP and CM features like the quick notification toggles etc.
My signal is terrible on 4g/3g/1x. My phone went from 4g to 3g to 1x. Then on 1x, it lost the connection and got it again. Even when I have a 3g connection and I try to call someone, it connects and says call lost in 5-10 seconds, or doesn't connect at all. I'm not expert on how cell phone radios work and how signal works, but could someone help me on improving my signal? Do I need to flash a new radio(s) to improve my signal? If so, where would I find it?
edit: I think i mean modem

Put your phone and your dad's phone in the same spot and check the signals (remember to check dBm and not the signal bars). Also make a call to Sprint like I said. If something is wrong, try switching modems (try out MDL) and then see. If anything else, get a replacement!

Ohhh you neglected you were on an AOSP ROM lol... that's probably the root of your signal problems right there brotha as AOSP ROMs are known to be less stable and have a weaker signal than TW ROMs. But all you gotta do is find the modems thread, download, and flash. I forget if they are flashable zips in recovery, or if they have to be flashed via Odin.
What I recommend is... go outside (NO WiFi!!) and do a speed-test on your current setup. Then flash a TW ROM and go to the same spot and do another speed-test. Also try and doing the same things with different modems as well and see which is the best combo for you!

Just search modems man.
Hello all.
Just seeking input from someone smarter than me, as this is waaaay above my paygrade.
I recently flashed a kk4.4.3 rom. As per everyone's advice, I also flashed the 1.02 radio, as the general concensus is that you might have wifi trouble otherwise.
What's troubling me is that I actually had trouble with signal bars (ie not wifi) with the 1.02 radio. So I went back to .33 and my reception has never been better AND I haven't had any problem with wifi at all.
So, my question is how come it seems to work backwards for me than the majority? And most importantly, will I experience trouble by using a 4.4.2 radio on my 4.4.3 system?

Don't trust the signal bars. Trust the dbm reading in about phone and status. Bars are very innacurate reading of actual signal strength.

I have some strange problems with my Note 3 N9005. I will try to explain it as good as I can...
I was on Omega Rom v19 and 4g and everything was good...
So I wanted to upgrade to the new v20 based on Sammy tw XXUFNF4...
I thought I would like to try the new modem as well, so I flashed stock Sammy rom XXUFNF4 via Odin before I flashed v20 of Omega on top of it.
Flash went well, both of stock Sammy and Omega rom...
But before I used to have 4g coverage in my house, now I have NADA. Well, that's not the problem here...
I have tried flashing other modems and some of them work, but still no 4g coverage in my house. The ones which doens't work gives me "unknown baseband and unknown imei" - I can fix that by flashing a modem which I know works for me.
I have tried many things now and I still get no 4g in my house.
I have wiped and flashed stock Sammy firmwares and even there it gives me the error "unknown imei and unknown baseband"
I am getting frustrated here and I just want to kill my Note 3 with a hammer.
Anyone outthere who can help me? I can write via hangouts and skype if so...
If there's any questions, please let me know...
/CK

At least we know the modem does allow 4G. It's not broken
So that leaves either a low voltage to the modem, or a very unlucky timing in regards to the tower. It is possible the lower-frequency band on the 4G transmitter is disabled (and high ones above 1800 can't penetrate indoors) or the transmitter's aim has been repositioned. Or the modem isn't getting enough juice.
Check with your carrier if there's an issue with the tower, or if they did any maintenance on it. (They repositioned the aim for the transmitter here after the lightning strike, and now I can't even get the GSM network in my house. I have to hang out the window to make a call...)
If that's not it, try increasing the voltage to the modem.

I believe Synapse provides an interface for the voltage controls, but I can not guarantee if it's supported. And I can't promise that it's safe, either.
But I do suspect it's a carrier problem. Is the 4G everywhere else as strong as it was before things went haywire? If yes, it's not the voltage. (if it was, the signal would be worse everywhere, and not just in one place. )

As a general model-related piece of information for Note 3 - I believe modems and the bootloader itself can not be (successfully) written from outside "trusted/secure zones" - in other words you need stock recovery at least for that to work. In download mode it should also work but again there are extra security checks there on the signature.
Update:
Talked to the operator today. There were no errors or recent work on their towers near me...
/CK
That's what we always say, too, when a customer asks. It's generally a lie. Particularly when the maintenance was supposes to improve things.
Did you install anything in your house that might cause interference? Router, microwave, something that covers the wall closest to the tower, a wallpaper with metallic components? New isolation? Or possibly neighboirs closer to the tower that did? (In my neighbourhood, when my neighbours between me and the tower open their windows, I get 3G. When they close it, nought. Oh the joys of reinforced concrete... )
