Hi all,
Getting my G2 in a week and thought I could get your input. I'm sure there are others that may also be interested...
I've been using cm for years, and have honestly been a fanboy without trying other custom roms.
Wanted to ask, what would you recommend for the g2? PA or CM?
PA is on kitkat already, and the forum and development seems more active for PA, whereas CM is still on 4.3.1 and the forum does not seem all that active...
Your thoughts please?
Thanks!

EDIT: I realise this was opened in the incorrect forum, apologies.
Cm 10.2 all the way
Vertigo just today uploaded alpha build of cm11, I used to use cm before but since halo I've been using pa (and pie's also awesome) But ultimately it's just personal preference

This.
Currently if you are talking KitKat, it makes almost 0 difference as both are pretty much stock base with minor tweaks and very minor differences.
Both are good in their own way.
But I suggest u post this in the Q& A thread.
Because here it might lead to best ROM/Kernel thread
Flash them both and see which you like
Just test yourself and see what fits you best
Also, please note that such comparasion threads are not allowed on xda.

And yet another also, all questions are supposed to go into the Q&A section

and I haven't been really following anything with the Nexus 7 so...posting this on Q&A.
What is your favorite rom (including plain ol' stock), why, and kernel?
can I use the Gapps I am got for the S3?
also, what other apps / tweaks do you guys recommend?
I never used an Android as a tablet so it's some what of an uncharted waters for me.

So why don't you do something about that ?
My best tip is to do some reading. These same questions are always going to get the same answers ...it's all up to the user and their needs.

This. I planned on getting the Nexus 7, so I decided to keep checking in at this forum to see recent developments and stuff. By the time I got the device, I was already aware of what defects to look for, what ROM's and kernels I would try first, etc...

Seriously, Custom roms are not worth of it.. or well not yet. I've tried over 6 differents rom and came back to Stock. Stock 4.1.1 has really great performance. The only useful thing I can think of is to flash a different kernel over the stock rom to overclock.

I disagree. Paranoid Android gives you control over your layout unlike stock.

I can read, but at the same time, I created this thread to get other peoples opinion in one place rather than going all over the place. and as for above, I was looking at PA too.
Can I use Gapps (7.27 i think) I am using for the S3 or does the Nexus 7 have it's own different Gapps?
So i've hesitated on rooting for a while now, but i finally did today. Now i'm looking for some good roms to flash, and i notice that a lot of N7 owners use PA. I want to know why? I tried CM10 and its pretty cool
Eh. I didn't like it. I had to RMA my tablet because the touchscreen was bein' cray.
But the interface of the rom? 10 points. Amazing. So fluent... it is a hybrid ROM that let's you use the tablet in tablet ui. And switch between stock, tablet, and phablet. I loved it.
Tldr;I hated it. I loved it.

The best thing to do is read the op for the pa rom and note the features it lists. All roms have their features listed to help you decide. Also, read other users comments within the thread to see what they are saying. It is all there waiting for you to read.
And for future reference, questions belong in the Q&A sub forum, not general.

I agree. PA has never felt as stable for me as CM. And I find that I prefer my tablet in portrait mode now, so I don't care about hybrid apps (plus the mail ones like email work proudly now)

I just tried it out and it was really unstable for something I would use everyday. I use SmoothROM and it is really stable. I put tablet UI and its perfect for my preference. It's all up on what people really want from their Nexus I guess.

Gotta disagree, as mods have gone on record stating that something such a that is outside of the scope of the Dev forum and against the rules. Replies in those threads are supposed to be limited to those relevant to development of the rom, such as bug reports. Asking a question of this nature in a Dev thread is only going to make it harder for folks to find relevant info in the thread.

I've been running PA on my N7 for a while now. Had 2.54 (the last 'stable' release) on my old 16GB and it was great. When I broke that one I got the 32GB and the first thing I flashed was PA 2.99 beta. Now running the 14-01-2013 beta build and for me its flawless. I love tablet UI and the ability to change the layout of individual apps and to set DPI to 160. PA Colours let's you choose custom colours for Nav bar, buttons etc. Its smooth and stable. Its like another device entirely. I even bought their Preferences Pro app to support the project and I'm eagerly awaiting P.A. 3
Combined with M-Kernel a30 and Trickster Mod I'm running at 1.9Ghz Max CPU and 600mhz GPU.
Its beastly. NFS:MW flies! Lol

This is a known fault. Its easily sorted by installing a 3rd party launcher although I believe it is fixed in the new build (which I'm just about to flash)

You should've really posted under General Discussion...and regarding your question. If you want Touchwiz based, I'm currently using the FreeGS4 rom and liking it. If you want more of a stock android, then I suggest CM10.1
Wrong section. But it depends what you like in a rom. Do you like the touchwiz? If so go with one of the Roms in the development section. If you like the stock feel trying the AOKP

Freegs4!! should be getting updated soon too :fingers-crossed:
I am a huge fan of stock android. My daily driver is Carbon ROM in which everything works and its slick as android can get. Free GS4 is solid for the TW feel and helps the new user because you won't lose any of the gs4 features such as eye tracking and the like

Hello guys. I recently bought this phone after 1.5 years on my old lg optimus 2x. Although the stock touch wiz UI is fairly speedy, I cant helo but think it would run much faster on a stripped down rom like cm10 for example. Which roms would you suggest if I'm looking to retain the sort of cool camera features on stock sg4 but without the lag of touch wiz ui? Excellent battery life is also a big plus Thank you.

You will not get the cool camera without TW. You can use a different launcher though.

Unfortunately no, as the camera requires the TouchWiz framework yo be installed.
You can however use a custom TouchWiz ROM, such as GoldenEye. Performance is better than stock, and it's based off the latest international firmware, so you'll be running a newer firmware that what is offered on AT&T.
If you don't mind losing the TouchWiz camera, then try out the official CM10.2 nightly from get.cm. It offers a ton more performance, has great battery life (I'd say comparable if not just shy of stock), but doesn't offer the same camera frills—oh, and of course, it doesn't look like it could win an award for being so ugly.
Personally, I would try CM. If you can't handle the camera (which is about the only downside, as I didn't end up using any of the gimmicky TouchWiz features after awhile) then it'll be so much better in every single way. If you feel you need the camera, try out GoldenEye.
Good luck! And happy flashing!

There is no BEST ROM as it depends on your preference/usage/signal/phone. So you get an idea of a few and try them out for a day or two each.
Just another tip from someone who has screwed up this in the past. If you install a touchwiz-based rom remember to also flash Loki-Doki!

I understand what the author intended by their post but all the 4.4 ROMs available have a description listing the features. Also most builds are still WIP so many features are unavailable until further progress has been made. I'd suggest either waiting for a while until the devs release new builds with more features or try Pound ROM as it has quite a few features and offers a pretty close stock KitKat 4.4 experience while CM 11 is more of a mix of CyanogenMod and KitKat.
Whatever you decide, once you've tried out KK, you won't want to go back to JB!

Not everyone has time to flash roms and see which ones work best..I for example have monthly quota on my internet and I have no plans on downloading every available rom..so this thread is useful and helpful afterall..
nice to see
Well its nice to see our beloved s2 having continued support!
Also would not be surprised to see an SC-02C (japan hardware variant, 99% similar to i9100 - no fm radio, digital tv tuner instead) cm11 rom soon from the kbc-developers people at http://android.slateblue.tk/
They usually maintain a low profile until they have something ready for release.
been using the 24 build of pound rom for the past day and have had almost zero problems. Phone very fast and stable. All basic features are their and working. Battery drain is basically the same (for my experience) as was with 4.3.1 roms.

.........and its turned into a best rom thread; if it didnt before.
Great thread, we were always missing this open discussion about experiences of different people about different rom and if xda is not place for it, then what?
Out of kk roms, I believe, Pound is most advanced featurewise for today. Battery life as usual for new, not sharpened rom. It's too early to make conclusions about battery in kk. Lets wait for official cm11 nighties and then speak about battery. The main feeling of three different kk roms that I personally tried are very good speed. Developer of Pound rom indeed mentioned that he will change device but It will take some time for him and after all he might keep the rom up till official cm11. But in any case, he can pass development to someone else if it will be feasible. At least he's not hiding his plans and does not disappear as MCM did. Well, I still keep the mcm's rom in case he will remove his files from sourceforge. Well, one this is great about kk and already noticable - speed.
Which one is the most AOSP ie. with minimum amount of extra features? If I read the ROM threads correctly, Carbon and Pound are somewhat based on CM and Omni and CyanFox are based on AOSP but also have tweaks from CM. (please set me straight if this is false)
I understand that no one can say what's the best ROM (I've tried the ROMs someone said was "THE BEST") but I'd like to be able to discuss and compare them. Now I'm using stock based ROM (had problems with MMS messages on CM) but I'd like to try "plain" Android to see if my old SGS2 can get some more battery time
Any recomendation for a custom KK rom? First it was only one, Wayland, now are more and i don't know what to choose.
