[Q] Is it possible to update MIUI rom without wiping my data? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since nexus 4 doesn't have OTA updates from MIUI, I need to flash either full or incremental update.
Will it wipe all my data from the phone?
How can I update MIUI without wiping the phone?

JellyTime Beta 9 did not finish installing on DHD

Hello,
JellyTime released on 2nd Aug 2012 did not finish installing on HTC Desire HD.
I had to go back to original OS without completing its install. :crying:
Any thoughts?
Regards,
Jwalant
Whats the problem..what happend during its installation?
I flashed beta 9 without any trouble
Beta 9
I am running that ROM on my HTC Inspire and it is running great - no issues, except what you can expect on a custom rom. I simply love it...
Did you perform a full wipe?
Sent using sweet, sugary goodness.
The same thing happened with beta 11

It again happened with Beta 11 of Jellytime.
Steps followed were:
Backup current ROM
using ROM Manager
Reboot in Recovery mode
Wipe --> Wipe system data, Factory Reset, Wipe Cache Wipe Dalvik Cache
Install --> Select Beta 11 --> Flash
It goes to a Jellytime screen and shows "Loading"
Screen shows the same thing for more than 20 mins.
I had to go back to my previous ROM.
Please help.

Does jellytime beta 14, the latest, require going back to Stock ROM?
Yes, Any phone with this problem (old ADSP firmware) installing JellyTime Beta 7 and up needs to flash the stock ROM first. After that, you can flash successive betas without re-flashing the stock.
I tried installing JellyTime beta 9 and 11 to my DHD with Ice cold sandwich and it did not complete installation.
Sent from my Desire HD using xda app-developers app
Not IceColdSandwich, the stock ROM. I used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1810461. Full wipe, flash that stock, full wipe, flash JellyTime.

Both or one?

You will only need to re-flash GAPPS if you do a factory reset / clear data, otherwise just install the new CM zip.

Download the one in the developer's section of the site. It's version 3.60. Wipe the system and SD partitions, flash the ROM and then gapps, and wipe cache and dalvik cache before you restart. That's all you need to do
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Android devices tend to have code names. Eg, “grouper” is the code name for the Nexus 7. “mako” is the code name for the Nexus 4.
So when you go to the PA ROM download site, you’ll see files names like “pa_mako-3.60-24JUN2013-161032.zip”
This means the ROM is Paranoid Android for mako. It’s version 3.60 built on 24 Jun 2013. I’m not sure what’s the relevance of the last 6 digits.
Anyway, it’s probably best to download the latest.
Then just follow the instructions in the PA ROM thread.

To flash the ROM u go into recovery and click on the install menu in twrp, or if u are using cwm choose install zip from SD card. Same thing for the gapps.

No you flash the kernel after flashing the rom. And you install it the same way...flash zip through recovery.

ok thanks this is starting to make a lot more sense. Flashing doesn't reset anything, correct?

It depends how you flash. When u first flash a custom ROM, or you are switching ROMs it's recommended to do a full wipe/factory reset before flashing. This will wipe apps, settings, etc. But your /sdcard partition will not be wiped. If u simply want to upgrade a ROM, you can dirty flash which means flashing without a full wipe. this allows you to keep all apps and other stuff.

Going back to MIUI

I'm currently on AOSP extended and thinking of going back to MIUI. Can I flash the latest MIUI recovery rom from Orangefox or do I have to take the fastboot route? I guess formatting data and wiping system, data, cache and dalvik is a must. Anything else to consider?
Fastboot it is. Find fastboot ROM on http://en.miui.com/a-234.html and flash it for safest and full stock restore.

Yes you can. In case you flash xiaomi.eu the correct kernel is included in the ZIP. Flash magisk right after that... And ready to go...
I went back to Miui too, way better battery life, fluid, no glitches and just more robust...
Sorry if it's too obvious, but I'm really new to this device and would like to receive a little help from you guys.
I'm on RR (also tested AEX) right now, plus Orange Fox recovery, and rooted (Magisk). All is good. But would like go back to MIUI stock again to see the difference.
A friend of mine recommended me to download these ROMs from here for MIUI 10.0-10.4 (stable). My question regarding the zip files available on there: are them flasheable via custom recovery (zip ones)? Will it overwrite my custom Orange Fox by original stock recovery from Xiaomi?
If you know more updated MIUI releases, please let me know where to download them
Thank you.
There's also the ARB problem. I know I'm on ARB 4 now and it's easy to check the ARB version in a fastboot rom in flashall.bat. Haven't found a way to check it in a recovery rom though but I guess it would be safe if I download the latest version.

I personally prefer xiaomi.eu Developer over Stable, but either ones are ok. Yes just flash. Orange Fox will not be overridden. Don't forget to also flash Magisk right after that...

Perfect. And last questions, please:
- Is MIUI 10.5 (9.7.11) the Developer one you are talking about? -> https://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/9-7-11.51324/
- xiaomi.eu ROMs, in that case: 10.5 9.7.11, can be updated by just installing new builds (zip) via TWRP? Or a clean installation is needed/recommended? Taking as an example for next probably release like 10.5 9.7.18...

Yes 9.7.11
Switching between MIUI builds deleting data is not mandatory but recommended.
If you are coming from another ROM (Pixel, Lineage etc) mandatory

You must download the OTA and magisk manual, then go in the recovery and flash the OTA and then magisk. Normally no data lose, but better is to backup
