Nexus 4 and 7 crash and reboot themselves! - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I have a Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 (2013 edition) on Stock Android 4.4 Kit Kat and I've had a problem for a while now. The problem is that my phone and tablet reboot themselves and then works normally for 10 seconds to a minute when it boots up and it crashes and reboots itself, and it keeps doing that, over and over. It's a loop. It starts when my phone reboots on itself and on my Nexus 7 it will disconnect from my home Wifi and if you reboot the tablet, it does the same thing. This is my 5th time with this problem and I can't find out why it happens. This has happened to me since I've had Android 4.3. I have always fixed this by leaving both devices off a day or two and then It would work like normal. Then the problem would disappear for a few weeks and then the problem would repeat itself. This has happened to me on Paranoid Android on 4.3 but never on stock until now. I thought it was a problem on Paranoid Android but now I see it's a problem of my devices. I'm actually on Android 4.4 when I got this problem again. I actually left both devices off for 2 days and it still has the same problem. I don't think it's because of any apps because it actually crashed on me right after I did a factory reset to my phone on the setup screen. Can someone please help me?

[Q] Nexus 4 on Paranoid Andoid reboots itself

Hello, I have installed Paranoid Android 3.99 RC2 on my Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 (2013) for a few months now and I have a problem. Sorry if I wasn't supposed to write here about my problem but I didn't know where I was supposed to. A month ago I was using my Nexus 4 which had Paranoid Android version 3.9.x and it randomly rebooted. So I let it reboot and it turned on normally but after a few seconds on, it was rebooting again. And it kept doing the same thing, over and over again. So I went to my Nexus 7 to look for help on Google or on XDA. So my Nexus 7 wasnt connecting to my home WIFI so I reboot my tablet to see if it would connect to my WIFI. So the exact same thing happend to my tablet. It would turn on for a few seconds and then reboot. The exact same thing as my phone. So that night I tried everything on my phone. Leave it off for a while, factory reset, delete cache and dalvik cache but nothing fixed it. So I flashed the stock image file to my Nexus using the Nexus Root Toolkit and my phone was normal on stock. But the thing is, I left my Nexus 7 alone because I really didnt need to fix it at that moment. I turned it off and left it alone as I went to sleep. When I woke up I turned my tablet on and it worked perfectly! As if nothing ever happened! So I ignored the problem that had happened. But today I was updating Paranoid Android to 3.99 RC2 and flashed it on my phone and tablet. So everything was working normal and then my Nexus 4 froze completely and I couldn't turn my phone off. So when I finally could turn my phone off, I went to my tablet to look for help on my tablet and the WIFI wasn't working. So I rebooted it and it did that exact same thing. It would turn on for a few seconds and then reboot itself. So I turned it off and left both my phone and my tablet alone. After an hour I turned both on and it will still do the same thing so I turned off both. I don't know what to do. Can someone please help me! :crying:
Do you have Chrome Beta installed?
It cause this problem.

PA RC2 has been giving problems lately, rebooting is one of them even after clean flash.. This has also been the reason for me to change the rom.
Please flash a new rom Slimbean v1.6 is THE BEST with franco kernel or hells core. Perfect and amazing perfomance with insane battery life.. :good:
Do try it.
Press thanks if I helped you.
I had the problem of random reboots with RC2 on hellscore and Matrix....rolled back to RC1 and everything works as it should.

Nexus 10, system frozen in the morning

This happens every once in a while... after leaving my nexus 10 charging overnight.. after I unplug it first thing in the morning the system starts to misbehave.. settings menu not opening, apps don't load.. in other words system is partially frozen, until I reboot. I even tried re-flashing factory images... but the issue is still there.. is it most likely caused by some background app that I use, or could it be a hardware issue? any idea folks
Never mind folks... I managed to sell it. Ordered the latest ipad, can't wait !!
Too bad as I got the same issue
Every morning the tablet is not responding at all, have to reboot. This is on stock 4.4. Anyone else experiencing this? How to chcek after reboot what was causing the hang?

Nexus 10 Random Reboots Fixed

I'm hoping I have fixed my Nexus 10 random reboot problem by installing the free "Wake Lock Power Manager" by darken from the Play Store.
Since upgrading to 4.4.2 I've been experiencing on average 3 reboots a day with 7 reboots on some days and a total of 81 reboots for April.
I installed the free "Wake Lock Power Manager" app early yesterday morning and I've not had a reboot since then.
I've used the setting which keeps the Wakelock always on as shown by the Wakelock icon in the notifications bar.
I think it might keep the screen on permenantly too but as I normally use my Nexus 10 with the magnetic Pogo charger lead connected that is not a problem.
If the random reboot problem returns then I'll report it.
Update.
Still no random reboots since installing the free "Wake Lock Power Manager" by darken after two-and-a-half days which is a record for me. So I'm feeling more confident that I've found a solution to my Nexus 10 random reboots.
I've kept my Pogo charging lead connected all the time and I've not done a power down since installing the "Wake Lock Power Manager" app.
I would be interested in knowing if the app has worked for anyone else.
I find this post very odd as I've had my N10 for over a year now, rooted, used a few different custom ROMs, returned to stock and only had reboots with few bad custom ROMs releases. If your on stock there is no way you should be having that frequency of reboots. If you are on a custom ROM then go to something another. Other than that do a factory reset or reflash stock and slowly add back apps until you find the villain.
From what I read in your posts it seems you only masked the real issue which means it will be that much more difficult to resolve the next time it bites your butt.

Thanks for your reply and your suggestions.
I'm on a stock ROM and I agree that I should not be having that many reboots, although it seems it's not rare judging by the number of similar posts on the Web.
I've tried a factory reset and downgraded to 4.3 which seemed to solve the problem, but I kept getting upgrade reminders from Google which I eventually did hoping the problem was fixed and went back on 4.4.2 but my reboots re-started.
I even got reboots after a factory reset with no apps downloaded other than those Android system apps which came with the factory reset so that seemed to rule out a faulty 3rd party app.
Without the Wake Lock app I would probably have had about 9 reboots over the last 2.5 days so I'm happy with that even if I'm just masking the problem.
I've read reports that the random reboots that some people are experiencing might be fixed with 4.4.3 due this month which would be a better solution than usin an app.
Another day has passed without a random reboot and I'm growing in confidence that my reboot problem is fixed, bearing in mind that used to get up to 7 reboots a day.
I'm enjoying my Nexus 10 much more now that I don't have to login and restart apps several times a day.
I wish I could hear that it has worked or failed from someone else to see if others with the reboot problem get the same result as me.

After reading this, I installed the app and started it with PARTIAL_WAKELOCK. No crash in 6 days, that's the longest period in ... ever!
I'll try the even less aggressive settings next.
Changed the setting to WIFI_LOCK_SCAN_ONLY, and the tablet rebooted within 2 hours.
Since I got the kitkat update, my nexus 10 start presenting random reboots. I tried everything to figure out the reason but with no luck.
However a couple of weeks ago I recharged the tablet using the micro usb port instead of the pogo pin connector (I've been using the pogo pin connector to charge the device since the cable was released) and then no random reboot occurred since.
I've read this tread and it seems everybody here that has been experiencing the random reboots is using the pogo pins to charge the nexus 10, right? Can anyone test if it will work if the micro usb connector is used for charging?

[Q] Nexus 4 random shutdowns on 4.4.4

Hey Guys,
I've been having problems with my nexus 4 randomly shutting down itself. The problem is sometimes when my phone goes to sleep mode it doesn't wake up again when I push the power button. There is no shut down animation or anything, it just randomly turns off. I have to long press the power button to reboot the phone. I'm currently on PA Final 4.41 along with hellsdoctor R20 kernel, this happens on both Dalvik and ART. My brother who is on a completely stock nexus 4 which was updated to 4.4.4 via OTA has the same problem as well.
I'm thinking it might be a bug in android 4.4.4 but not sure. Anyone have a fix for this problem? Thanks so much.

Turn off auto update apps in playstore. Happend to me before to. Something happends when on wifi and phone in deepsleep the playstore auto updates the apps and it doesn't respond and I have to keep pressing the power button to power it on.
I have no more shutdowns since 4.4.3. But I use stock rooted.

I will try to turn off my auto update but I don't think it's the problem. My brother's phone which is completely stock, not rooted and has auto update off still experience the same problem as well.

My mother's full stock nexus 4 with android 4.4.4 experience no such problems
Same here
I got this crash today too. It just got stuck. Forced reset and it's ok. But again, this happens since 4.4.4
And i get some crazy lags on Google+ sometimes ... and this is a first. Don't know if it is the app, rom or Kernel.
I am on Paranoid Android 4.4.1, with Franco's kernel and running ART.
Also i am running ART for a long time now and never had any problems.
So I tried turning off Google Play updates and the problem persists. It usually happens around after the phone has been on for 30+ hours. Gonna try to switch back to Dalvik and see if the problems persist. Never had this happen before only after updating to 4.4.3+ ROMs have this started happening. Very stumped as to how to fix it
Right, so I think I cracked this one...
I handed in my headset in order for customer service to fix it and of course they flashed it with Googles 4.4 image(had to upgrade to 4.4.4 once I turned it on)...
After rooting it and flashing a bunch of custom roms I suffered from the same problem, it drove me nuts but I remembered it didn't happen when I upgraded from 4.4.2 so I downloaded a 4.4.2 image and flashed it(used wugs toolkit-the manual option) flashed TWRP recovery and a custom rom and I'm random shutdown free for the last few hours, hope that helps...
same problem here 100% stock android 4.4.4 (using nova but can't imagine that matters) last night was the first time i picked up the phone and pressed the power button... nothing. long pressed the power button for 8-10 seconds and it booted up. now again about 15 hours later i pick up the phone press the power button and nothing. never happened before and i assume its something to do with the 4.4.4 update. i dont use auto updating in the play store and this has literally never happened before yesterday.

Try a 4.4.3 kernel like hellscore b47 or if you think it's a wifi issue a 4.4.2 version like b46 with the wifi fix.

When did you update to 4.4.4? I never experienced this on 4.4.2 either. Only started happening after I updated to 4.4.4. I think for me it happened the first night after updating.

The only thing I can tell you is, that 4.4.4 causes a lot of problems recently. You are by far not the only one with this problem. I've also experienced random shutdowns like yours, bootloops, devices not turning on again...
Especially stock 4.4.4 causes problems. I could not identify the problem or bugfixes by now. It is really complicated since some devices work fine with 4.4.4 and some dont.
I only can suggest you to flash a 4.4.3 rom. That is the only work around.

Approx 24 hrs atm
same problem here...
Same here.
I have had the same problem since i updated to 4.4.4... except mine shuts off only when i touch the screen (like pull the menu down, open a app, ect.) so, I went and did a factory reset, nothing changed. downloaded the Nexus Root Toolkit, did a flash stock to 4.4.4 again, nothing.. Then now I have tried another flash stock to 4.4.3 but now have manually updated to 4.4.4. I will reply again to see if this changes anything.
My Nexus 4 is completely stock, not rooted, never tampered. So I am very surprised with this issue, but I have had another issue.. Along with the shutting off issue I have a problem which so far was fixed with the first Flash stock(i think) I would use my Nexus 4 with signal for texting and using data but when i went to actually use data like to search something up it would randomly say i have "no service".. not sure why it did this, happened when I had 4 bars and didn't move..
Still not working
After I did the Flash Stock to 4.4.3 and then manually updated to 4.4.4, my nexus still doesnt work. Dont even bother trying it.
I have the same issue however with a mail app, while the phone is perfect without the mail app
