This is what android does. The operating system is built to multitask, just like your pc's OS. If you don't know what you're doing, you'll likely cause issues when not allowing apps to run at startup. Get rid of the crappy task manager that you're likely running and let android do its job.
If you want to tweak androids memory usage settings, get autokiller. Read first though. Don't just set it to strict or aggressive and not expect to run into problems.

While this may be true, there are a lot of unnecesary apps running at start up and constantly popping up... as advanhit says, one should know what they're doing before messing with it, otherwise u can completly crap some apps that u like to use or have running. But provided you have an understanding of what apps u need and which ones u don't, u can always root, and use an app like titanium uninstaller or root explorer/manager to remove some apps, such as some of sprints bloatware etc... you just have to know where to look to find them... some simple esearch here or on othr forums like sdx, will help you figure it out.

Download startup manager from the market to stop unwanted apps from starting or restarting automatically.
I should've clarified.. I dont mean system related apps.. I mean, one reboot my Fring or google voice among others, will be in the running apps list.. next reboot, sprint nav, ebay, bank of america will be running..
I'm already rooted, and ive removed the bloat that i wanted to remove.. I monitor my memory usage with Advanced taskkiller.
Thanks for the suggestions and advice guys!

Again... Get rid of the task killer.
As far as google voice, stop that from running and it will effect google sync. Which syncs contacts, calendar events, etc. If youre running Froyo, even apps and settings will be effected by this.. This is what I meant by knowing what you're doing before tooling with these operations. As stated before... This is how android works. Leaving it alone will be the best thing for you. If you're lagging, I recommend a different ROM.
FYI. Not to sound cocky, I'm speaking from experience.. Five generations of android devices used... All rooted and running flawlessly. G1, MT3G, Cliq, Moto Droid, Droid Eris.

hi guys, I always see Media > DownloadService in running apps.. why it is running all the time? and, being running all the time, is it supposed to drain my battery faster?
I have always lived with that, but if it drains my battery faster I would like to get rid of it..
EDIT: it seems to me it is related to GMAIL.. in fact, after a reinstall, download service process was not there until I started gmail for the first time.. now it is always there again..
can you guys using gmail confirm you have media download service always running?
and people who has not gmail installed can confirm they don't see that process always running? thanks!

hi guys, just a question.. is that normal that I always see maps in running apps? I use maps once per month or even less, so why it should be running all the time? (maps > PrefetcherService)
and, being running all the time, is it supposed to drain my battery faster?
I have always lived with that, but if it drains my battery faster I would like to get rid of it..
the same happens also for "media" (media > DownlodService..... what is that? can I remove it?) and google play music (MusicPlaybackService)
it is really annoying for me to see them always running even when I am not using them....
any suggestion? thanks in advance!!

It happens with me too. I used Greenify and it stopped appearing until the 4.1.6 play store update. Now maps opens automatically almost every 2 minutes. You might not get a significant change in battery life. You can remove google play music though. I don't know about the media download service, might be related to browser or google play music (I recommend not removing it).
thanks for the answer. I tried greenify too and it seems to correctly remove maps here.. (I too have play store 4.1.6, will update to 4.1.10 in a short time btw )
about play music.. I use it, so I can't remove it! btw I greenified it too, so it shouldn't bother anymore
so the only pending problems are media service and also play store (pendingnotification service) that is appearing sometimes in running apps.. unfortunately they are system apps so I can not greenify them
The pendingnotification service might have appeared because of the option to notify you of an update. And yes, the pro version has that feature of hibernating system apps (but its experimental) and god knows what might happen if you do.
of course I disabled the notification and auto update via WiFi options and rebooted but the service kept appearing in running apps sometimes..
as x the media running service, it seems I fixed it removing mediauploader.apk it has not appeared again so far after removing that package!
so all seems good now thanks all!

EDIT: media downloadservice is back again so it was not related to mediauploader... what the hell can be that??
it seems to me it appeared after running gmail for the first time.. but I will have to confirm that after some more investigations..
after some more attempts, i found out the process: media > DownlodService is related to both gapps and Downloadprovider.apk
if I remove Downloadprovider.apk, that process doesn't appear anymore, but I get gapps FC's (and very probably will not be possible to download anymore things from the browser and/or play store)
so in conclusion it seems to me we have to live with that process running, and that is not possible to really get rid of it safely..
Yup, made that mistake of deleting Downloadservice.apk... Drove me nuts with FCs
so nobody could get rid of that process? you too have it always running?

:silly: Strangely, no, its not always running for me.
It seems to run when I download something in a browser and then disappears after 15 minutes or so

thanks
it seems to me after I installed latest maps 7.x the media > download process is not appearing anymore in running processes.. maybe it was related to sh*tty maps??? :fingers-crossed: :fingers-crossed:
Hey guys and gals,
Trying to figure out this issue on my phone and can't for the life of me so I was hoping someone could shed some light on this. My basic problem is that my apps seem to be hibernating prematurely, eg. my alarm clock(gentle alarm) doesn't go off in the morning because its disabled, HD widgets does not update time and weather like it should etc. The phone is rooted and I have greenify installed, tried unhibernating them in greenify and removing greenify altogether with no success. I was trying to think of anything that was installed recently that could be causing conflict but the only thing recently installed was adaware. Anyone have a similar issue or can recommend a fix? Not having an alarm clock is driving me nuts :crying:.
Thanks guys

I use Greenify also and have not experienced this problem. Are you using Titanium Backup (or similar app) to remove or freeze an app/process/function? If so, then that might be where your problem originates. It can be difficult to determine exactly what the consequences are of freezing some of those Samsung, com.xxx, etc. files.

Yes I have a bunch of stuff frozen but my problem didn't start until just a couple days ago..........Strange, guess I'll have to page through and see by process of elimination if I can get it to work. Thanks for the help :fingers-crossed:
I have a 6t tmobile version that I updated to the international version and I have an app that won't load. When I click on it I acts like is going to open and then closes instantly. Is supper quick that you don't really see it. Help. The app is the YouVersion bible app. The thing is that the app was working fine before the update to international version. And the only older versions work.
Every time I update I have a few apps that do this. I have to open the play store and let Android system WebView update to cure this problem. Have you checked for updates yet?

Oh, I get it. Did you disable it? That is very weird. That was needed and it being outdated was the exact cause of my problems when I had similar issues that you describe.
I remove many things from OOS, but I've noticed there a few things I have to make sure are up and running before I remove otherwise I have issues.
What I would do is try and re-enable that and update it. See if that fixes it. If it does great. Try and disable it again after that if you want. However I think you may need it. Otherwise if you are rooted, back up that app with TitaniumBackup, and probably it's data in Android / Data folders and try a fresh install (This should be a last resort)? <-- That is unless it's an app that doesn't really have data that matters. If it's something that can be freshly installed without worry go ahead.

I figure out how to enable it, but it did not help. The app keeps opening and closing instantly
try this
force stop the app, its probably running in the background
wipe the cache and data in the app(settings/apps and notifications/
then un install the app
now reboot, and let the phone settle in a minute
go to app store and try to download/ install again
thats what I would try.

I did that however it does the same thing am just going to wait for an update.
email the developer and let him know about your issue..
Thanks for all the help. I finally got it to work. What I ended up doing was reseting the phone. I guess the last time when I used the oneplus backup app it cause a problem. Or a least that is what I think. I used the Google backup instead.
I found the answer
Hi i hope it can help for myself i finally got the ultimate tricks to prevent any background app to be killed especially the bible using text to speech output you only need to move your app to system ?
I hope someone can help. Since buying my SM-G975U at release, every several days, Play Store updates get stuck at download pending. The only way to get them downloading again is to uninstall updates to the Play Store app. Then, updates will install as expected for a few days, but then this will happen again.
I just factory reset my phone, installed all updates and installed apps one by one rather than restoring from a backup, and I'm back to the same issue.
What else can I try to fix this??
Thanks for any assistance.

Yeah, I've tried it just about every time this has happened, and it's never fixed the problem. Yet that seems to be the most common fix. Thanks for the suggestion and quick reply.
I have the exact same problem too, clearing cache and data works sometimes, changing wifi networks also works sometimes but very erratic!

It's reassuring to know I'm not the only one. Sure wish there was a clear problem/solution.
In sifting through Google searches, I read something about disabling Android Setup. I read someone else say the problem might be having two launchers (I use Nova), but I've always had two launchers on my phone.
I'll have to try changing wifi networks next time it happens.
Actually, I have two launchers too, Nova being my main one and Dodol as the second although I can actually remove that now. It'd be weird if that conflicted.
I had that issue when i was running my vpn. Had to disconnect for my playstore to act normally again.

I was counting the stock OneUI launcher as one of my two (and I use a home switcher app to switch between them). But if this were really a problem, wouldn't a ton of people have it?

I wonder if that could be it. But, just like the other possible solutions, I've had PIA running on my phones for years without this problem. I wonder if setting the Play Store to bypass the VPN in PIA's per app settings might help.
I guess you're on the May patch? It basically ****ed the phone..

I am on the May patch, and it doesn't seem to be an improvement, for sure. I believe, though, that my Play Store issue predates the May patch.
Im on the may patch, no issues here
I've had this issue before and the way I solved it is by making sure that whatever items I disabled in AdHell or PackageDisabler, to re-enable them and then restart the phone and see if the issue is still present. It was not for me, so I went down the list of disabling things again one by one. All is good now. Unfortunately I am unsure which package was it that was causing the issue, but definitely a samsung one if I am not mistaken.

Thanks. I'll give this a try. I only had disabled Flipboard, Game Launcher, and a dictionary. I've re-enabled those. They don't seem like critical apps, but it's worth a try.
I appreciate the input.
I'm having the issue from time-to-time without any third-party app that could interfere.
Rebooting is sometimes the only way to fix it.
September update here. Cleared cache on play store,in Google app, reboot. Nothing solves to me
