New HP Tablet Mesquite black friday 89 dollars - Hardware Hacking General

Hey guys was just browsing the black friday deals on walmart and they are selling a 89 dollar 7 in tablet with a intel medfield atom chip. It is running a x86 version of android according to http://tabtimes.com/news/ittech-os-...er-hps-7-inch-mesquite-android-tablet-sell-89. Looks interesting as it is a sub 100 x86 tablet but it is a little lite on other specs. Anybody have any more info on this device? Any advice on linux on these things? Thanx guys
Hope im posting this in the right section as it is news but I have questions. Feel free to move it to the right section.

Interesting, what's the screen resolution? I'm guessing 1024x600, but 1280x800 would be nice to have.
However, most people will be better off by spending a bit more and getting the Venue 8 for $129.

My biggest question is, how easy will it be to get Windows or linux running on it? What will the driver situation be?
We will have to wait and see

Yeah drivers are my biggest worry, that and ram. The x86 port of android is kinda weak. I've used one before and while the system itself is ok good luck finding apps for it that work. I know this sounds sad but im getting it basicly to play some old games that dont quite work right in dosbox .

Windows 8 on XOOM?

Hi
Am I being wholly unrealistic on this or could we hope to see Windows 8 run on these sluggish XOOMs ?
It seems like the hardware is not massively different?
Possibility or impossibility?

Would be nice, no idea what the requirements are for Win8 tho..
I can't believe no one else seems to be thinking about it ... couldn't find anything on the web suggesting they were though.
I just hope someone comes up with something to make me excited to own a xoom again. I was excited when I bought expecting to be on a wave of development but there has been only one small set of bug fixes/features that should have been on release version.

Tiamat is pretty darn fast.... then ADW ex makes it even faster.
Id be happy with a chroot of win8

With the dev preview only being x86/64 at the moment we will have to wait for the ARM version to be released before anything can be done on the Xoom. I cant wait to see if there are any devs that can get it going.....a dual boot with ICS would be fantastic
I am sure it is faster when rooted and overclocked ... just haven't got round to doing it yet ... kind of resent having to do it to get a user experience that might be close to acceptable
I know that there is no arm preview yet but I believe the min spec is detailed ... are there any things we fall short of?

guys, I'd hate to burst your bubbles, but there were around 4 posts about win 8 on the xoom and all of them came to the conclusion that it wouldn't work, or at least, very unlikely. Windows is closed source. Its not like Ubuntu or any other Linux distro that we can modify.

There was a bunch of windows 8 topics on xoom but not looking good. And development will get better overall on xoom when ics comes out because you have to remember, honeycomb source wasn't released and never will be. Ics will be open source though.
Android may soon do more than windows can. By the time WIN8 comes out in arm form android will be on key lime pie.
What really is needed is a full Linux version for the Xoom. Linux is already available for ARM CPUs. But what is needed is the kernel patch for the Xoom, and the hardware drivers.
Stop pining for windows, as there are already plenty of gadgets with it on it. I just purchased a Azpen X1 tablet. The 16GB drive is so small, that I ran out of space the first time that I ran the windows update!! I got a 32GB drive for it, and will install Ubuntu on it. I use Linux for everything, and found that windows is very over rated.
Not sure how Windows is "over rated" ... it seems everyone is out to say mac/ios/linux is better than it. If linux is so great why are you giving it double the storage space the windows install was offered ;-)
I know windows is closed source ... but the hardware appears to be very similar to other tablets that run windows, it would just be a case of suitable drivers?
ICS may improve things but it still doesn't feel like the direction android is headed in is where I hoped/expected in terms of offering tablet optimized/specific applications.
Windows 8 looks a lot more like the tablet os I would like to use ... I guess time will tell.

At first I intended to give 16GB to each OS. But since widows barely fits on 16 GB, I decided against it.

What other tablets like the Xoom run windows? Windows only runs on the Intel family of CPUs (and clones), while most tablets have an ARM CPU.
samsung has a dev tablet out that runs windows 8. they gave it out at some convention.

Yes and nobody is going to sit down and spend the time and write drivers for a closed source OS. Especially from scratch. Not to sound like a jerk, but if you're bored of your xoom, sell it and get a windows slate

lol i never said i was tired of it, but windows 8 from what I played with it on the desktop is a more practical platform. Often times I'm using splashtop to access my desktop at home. You're mad.
also people write custom drivers for windows all the time. custom graphics card drivers, controller drivers, etc.

Look at it this way, most other hc tablets have a port of Ubuntu, which is open source, and we don't. If nobody wants Ubuntu enough to work with the open source os, who is going to work with closed source windows 8?
That is another thing that I just dont get ... it really feels like my best informed choice to get the XOOM was the wrong one. Moto are not pushing the development and user experience like I had hoped and the dev community hasn't been set alight either :-(
Still I hope we see some stuff soon. For now I will just have to try one of the few android roms

Noob: Intel Android tablet to Windows 8? Possible?

OK, couldn't find a similar thread, so I will make a new one. I am a Noob when it comes to tablets and their OS restrictions (I've heard of boot-loaders and stuff but don't know exactly what they are).
So to the question - say I get something like this: Lenovo Ideatab K2110, which runs on an Intel X86 architecture.
Then when Windows 8 come out, can I get a license and run it on the device? Will that be possible? I know it is sort of early, but I am thinking about tablets and evaluating the options. Not really a fan of Android and iOS as I've always used windows, so I was just wondering if I get an Intel-based ICS 4.0 device, whether I can upgrade to Win eventually if I am not happy with it.
Also, I haven't found anything on the net, for convertable Android Intel-based tablets (like the Transformer) - anyone read anything on the topic? As if I upgrade to Win 8, I'd prefer a keyboard-dockable device.
Any help will be much appreciated!
To clarify - I am asking because of affordability - currently Win 7 tablets are very expensive. But if I get Android and decide that Win 8 is worth the money eventually then I will probably invest in it. I know the switch from Win 7 to Win 8 will be easy but Win 7 is crap until Win 8 comes out AND it is more expensive than Android so I see no reason to buy such a device.
And while on topic - how much would an Android shave off the price of a similar system with Win 8? Are Win 7 tablets so expensive because of the hardware or because of the software?
Edit: Just saw a similar thread in the Dev forum! I guess someone else has the same idea as me and it sounds plausible! Just waiting for an appropriate dockable device then Still, anyone heard about any convertible tablets with Intel chips?
You may be the first one in XDA say that Windows 7 sucks.
yeah, it can be suck for Tablet because it is a platform which Windows 7 wasn't aimed for.
And i don;t have a clear answer for the question because they can have the same hardware but install an OS on it is a different story.
For an example, in order to install Windows on a iMac is a stupid progress, even other PCs can use the same specs.
On a tablet it isn't good as far as I am aware. On my laptop - I love it. Anyway, are we going to know for sure when the Win 8 beta and some Intel Android device is out? I mean, would guys around here work out whether it will be possible at that stage?

I bet most people here would buy off a tablet which run Windows 8 on a Second Gen Core i series.
ASUS seem to be a great deal over this.
does it use the regular BIOS when turned on? if so then yea it'll work. Im not so sure about that touchscreen though, there might not be drivers available for it. It really depends if the controller has been used regularly in windows, or if its some obscure chip that is only now being used in that device.
Based on little knowledge,Win 8 needs 'bios' , be it tablet or mobile.
OEM have to customise the hardware architechture.
I guess win 8 should run all the apps of win 7, based on the excellent backward compatibility of win o/s in general. again certain apps depend on the hardware architechture and the customisations the OEM offer. I may be wrong
As of now, the chaces for such porting seem low, unless some developers here in the community come up with another solution.
as long as it can have BIOS loaded, and drivers can be created, then the answer is yes, it will be possible

Thats exactly it,and with the cheap intel based android tablets coming on the market now,2 years later, this takes on more importance. I do wonder what boot loader they are using for the android tablets. I see that AMD is going to start getting into the mix,and that could be interesting because I understand that AMD has been supporting coreboot. If coreboot is ported to the chipsets in use,it might make an easy path to putting windows or linux on those tablets. Basicly, core boot handles low level hardware initialization, then loads an EFI or OpenBIOS payload, then your off and running In fact,if coreboot is ported,we might even see some RUN coreboot as the bootloader. With android,I can see simply using coreboot to directly boot into the linux kernel, and into android. But if they use it,its open source,so they need to release the code, and your good to go.

[Q] Which tablet to buy for windows 8 cp?

Hey guys,
i want to buy a tablet with 3G connection soon and planning to spend not more than 350€ / 460$.
Which tablet would you buy to install windows 8 cp ?
Thx for your help!
Cheers
TOmatoe
Do you know the WePad or ExoPC?
Just google a little bit & find out if it is soemthing for you.
I bought it one week ago and upgraded it with 2GB ram + 80GB SSD.
Win8 works quiet well on the pad, and it has the necessarry resulution for the split screen function where a second programm is shown on a third of the screnn size.
thx for the hint. I read very good and very bad ratings for the WeTab. Battery Life has too be very weak and the touchscreen is not very reative i read.
Does 3G / WLan work on WeTab with Windows 8?
I am looking for a reactive, snappy Tablet.

The first post was written with my WeTab under WiFi.
And this post using my mobile phone sim from my HD7 (3 Austria)
The touch behavior under W8 is excellent in my opinion.
Only the g-sensor isn't working correct at the moment and the light sensor is a bit strange sometimes. Haven't tested Bluetooth & HDMI so far.
I'm using Windows 8, Android 3.2.2, Android 4.0.3 and Ubuntu 12.04 Beta on the tab for testing and application development at the moment.
[Edit]
Changed back from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS ==> 11.10 due to touchscreen driver instabilities
I also have to buy a tablet and I would like to have Windows and Intel compatibility with Microsoft's worldwide, recommended buying now a windows 7 compatible with windows 8 in the future, or wait for the release of Windows 8? I saw the hp 2, it recommended? know other tablet?
suggest
I suggest you wait for the final release before buying a tablet.
Have tried it on HP Slate 2 , only not working properly is the N-Trig and it cannot detect your Sim Card for 3G connection.
for now windows 8 is in beta test, i think this problem there are because windows 8 are not final.
i would like to buy hp to use for now with windows 7 and after with windows 8 but i don't know if this hp will be ok for new windows 8.
at the moment which tablet would you recommend to buy to use with windows 7, 3G, Wifi??

Personally I wouldn't buy any tablet hardware currently out, especially for a consumer preview. Wait until fall, when things are finalized and there are some good tablets at reasonable prices, specifically designed for Windows 8. Then you'll be in a far better position to get the best hardware with native support, the features you want, at a price you'll be comfortable paying. Patience is a virtue

Asked the same question myself.
dhgate.com have some great value tabs. ~$300 US (with $30 off at the moment) for a 1.66 atom 2gb ram and 32gb ssd.
In my opinion for the price why not go for it, in fact i'm about to.

you can always run android on it or whatever you want if win8 doesn't work out.
I'm going to have a play with one of these then maybe invest on a WoA version when they come out. The Nokia one sounds pretty cool.

If you are looking for something good, then i suggest you wait until the official windows 8 is released or atleast the RC version comes out so that manufacturers and start building tablets optimized for windows 8 that will be snappy, responsive and have long sustaining battery life. It's too early to suggest one right now. Have some patience

Dell Venue q/a

Hi;
I have lurked this forum since the HTC apache days. I understand this is a windows 8 forum, however my question, or thought is regarding installing windows 8 on a tablet that runs android. Now before I get chased out with a broom. Hear me out, this particular tablet runs an intel atom cpu and has 2gb of ram. Makes it perfect for windows 8 and it has a good form factor. The two tablets I have in mind are the Dell Venue 7 and Dell Venue 8 which come loaded with android 4.2.2 if im not mistaken. They seem like a bargain at this point. After reading some reviews they are built nicely and have some impressive specs. Amazing what you can get for under 200bux these days. Now again before I get chased out the room, I love android, however I feel windows 8 would fit my needs much better in the long run. These tablets have better specs than my old netbook running windows 7 on it and that machine is still going strong for me, now running mint linux.
Anyone here exploited the boot loader on these tablets yet? I would love to test one of these with windows 8 on them. It looks like I may purchase two Venue 7's today (one for me and one for the wife), they have similar specs to venue pros offered by dell at double the price.
Thank you.

I know nothing about the device in question, but my chance have you tried an OTG cable and a keyboard? I assume that if it is an X86 it may have a BIOS.

Which is the best Windows 10 affordable tablet out there?

Hi everyone! I'm not new here on XDA, but i'm new into Windows 10 "mobile" handsets. I've seen a lot of review about several differen models but haven't find yet the perfect one for me. I used to do my everyday tasks with a Galaxy tab S2 (2015) then it broke in a non fixable way. I've decided to change and try with a Windows tablet to see how feels a pc like experience handled. Actually i don't have (and don't want to) a lot of money to invest in a similar product, but i can afford max a 250/300€ device. I know i can't expect a Surface performance for that price, but i just need it to view some streaming movies, surf the web and mainly use Office products to study. Anyway i'm here to ask if you can help me and suggest some of the best or what you think may be the best tablets out there. If may help you, i'll write down some of the key point i wish to have:
- A decent soc/good ram: Again, i know i can't expect much...not even thinking on top performance, but i'll be fine if i'll have a product that doesn't stuck while i'm using it. Otherwise would become too frustrating.
- 8-12 inchs: Preferibly 10, but anything above or below would be fine.
- No dual boot: May reduce storage since i don't mind to use anything than Windows. Really don't need a dual os.
- Brand: I'm open to everything. Really don't mind about the brand (even if it will be chinese) as it respects the above "expectations".
In conclusion, i don't need a "top" product and i'm aware that i can't pretend too much for the budget, but i just need a decent product to accomplish my everyday tasks, nothing more. I repeat, i'm a student so Microsoft Office will be the main use of this tablet, beside web and netflix or similar. I could use a laptop, i know...but i prefer to have something i can carry easily wherever i go. I'd really apprecciate any advice and/or personal experience. Thank you.
I guess that no one knows that...or simoly it doesn't exist. Well, this discussion can be closed then
tablets are alwayys laggy, even if theyre not at first. browse sites for few days or install some apps and it will start lagging. my fatherbought tablet and doesnt use it at all cuz its so laggy and broken
older used Surface Pro? I'm not even sure what other options there are, that is the only one I ever see.
I Like my Odys Wintab Ares 9.
It still lives after 3 years.. I used it a couple of times at work for a couple of months because the chefs thought Lenovo is good for a Technician too use... You just have too look angry at Lenovo and the Touchscreen cracks !
On my Odys I now need a new screenprotector, it is as if its build by HTC.. You can let it fall, bump against walls and use it in light rain..
And the price was 159€ ..
The only negativ is that it has a storage of only 32GB.. but I have a 128GB SDXC in it..
With a decent bluetooth keyboard and cheap bluetooth Microsoft mouse I prefer it over the too expensive Surface or Lenovo Tablets.. For the difference in Price I bought a Acer Aspire Laptop and took my girlfriend for a fancy diner..
I just got the HP Pro Tablet 608 G1, and it's really snappy. Just updated it to 20H2 and it's even better. Got it brand new on eBay with Miracast/usb/hdmi dock for $89.

I have the enterprise edition with 4GB ram. Got it off eBay NIB for $80.
It has a bunch of enterprise-only features which make it extremely snappy -- like bios editing, rom kitchen, driver customization, and enterprise-only firmware from chip manufactures like Hynix... to name just a few.
So, it isn't low-end by any means. Even came with a USB/ethernet/hdmi/miracast docking station. Found the HP Enterprise Catalog price list from years ago, and it was originally $1,049.
I would recommend a Microsoft surfaces pro 7
