[Q] RAM usage high - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I just got my galaxy s4 and right out of the box i realized the RAM usage is quite high (around 1.2gb). i've cleared running apps and cleared the memory on the in the ram settings. is this just something i have to deal with or something else?

Its touchwiz. Its like that. Try aosp.

Oh that sucks. I would root, but I do like some of Samsung's added features and I don't know if I would lose them or not.

that's what the ram is there for. to be used.
you could consider a debloated and slimmer touchwiz rom from the android development section and pair it with one the great kernels also located here. might get the results you want plus be able to keep touchwiz, if thats your thing.

High RAM usage is a good thing not a bad thing. The whole point to RAM is to keep stuff in it so it doesn't have to be reloaded, which causes lag. What are you trying to accomplish by clearing the memory?

If you root you won't lose any Samsung features unless you delete them with Titanium Backup. I deleted all crapware on my phone and it is fast as anything with awesome battery life.

Available RAM

I have not heard too much about this, but the available RAM on my Atrix is around ~155-160MB which seems really low considering nothing but syncing services are running.

That is normal. Everyone needs to read up on how RAM works on an Android phone. Especially Android 2.2+

Yeah, I hear ya. I forget sometimes that a task killer used to be essential on older versions like 1.5/1.6
I usually have between 250-400 free, but I turn my phone off and on once or twice a day to keep it running fresh. I never see available ram that low.
im usually at around 400-450 when i keep it normal....try to clean up the crap out some bloated scripts on webtop, that'll free up some space, and also delete the bloatware from the apps...if you do that and don't run a secondary launcher, you should be fine...im just running motoblur adeo modded which keeps it lean.
I am running launcher pro. I'll try running Blur. How do I remove the bloatware?

well delete LP (it runs about 50mb when fully initialized), delete all the stock apps that you really don't need, also install adeo rom which will deox your apps so it wont run at boot, you can also install atk (it wont read the ram accurately since it has conflicts with the dual core for some reason) but it does work. it should then be at around 400+ on ram available.
You can add things to the auto close list in the built in task manager. Those apps will close out when the screen goes into standby. Lots of things stay running and sucking up ram without doing that.

That is an interesting bit of information. I never realized any of that. I always look at the little memroy stat on my sense clock widget and hate when my memory gets low. I am always closing apps to bring up free ram.
This was one of the reasons I reverted from the adeo rom. Always had less than 200mb free and could barely get it higher. Without adeo I can keep it closer to 300mb.
It always seems that my phone runs fine no matter what the available ram states so it makes sense to me that it doesn't matter. Perhaps now I won't concern myself with it as much and maybe even give launcher pro another go.

I hate to say it but you guys have no idea what you're talking about. Just read the link I posted earlier and do some research on your own about the matter. All you're doing is putting stress on the system and killing your battery.

I'm running launcher pro, blur stuff frozen, always have more than 300mb free. want to know the best way to clean up the RAM? go delete all the excess apps you don't actually need or use. I'm willing to bet there are a good number that you haven't used since first downloading thinking they'd be cool.

Yea, verily. This is why I'm not especially worried about the Bionic's or the G2X's smaller RAM capacities. I have killed a lot of bloatware and typically have more than half my Atrix's memory available. Since "available" basically equals "wasted", I'm not going to have any problem returning the phone to hold out for the G2X.
(I would probably feel differently if I could see myself getting much use out of the Atrix's webtop OS.)
Can anyone confirm if Adeo works on the Bell version? Thanks.
Also, do I use Titanium Backup to backup all the stock apps incase I decide to return?

Not sure if it's working for the Bell version.
The Adeo install script creates a backup file of your system files. Titanium will only backup the apk files, not the odex files. So if you wanted to return it you would have to take the created backup file, extract the required folders, then repackage and rename them to work with the adeounistall script. Be sure to replace the folder that is already in there.

Wow! And I suppose there is a tutorial for this. I have used a lot of abd with my Nexus but I always had a tutorial to refer to.
Why do you need more than 200mb of RAM available? I use a Milestone 1 and I get 30 to 50MB available and it works like a charm. Memory management in Android is automatic, way different from a desktop OS. It frees up memory as soon as you need it.
I run Memory Booster which has task killer and quick boost. When I run it after start up, I hit around low 600 mb free. When I run it when the phone dips to the 300 mb range, it normally frees up 150 to 200 mb.

[Q] How often does your RAM go over 90% used?

I've been using this app for the past few weeks:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cleanmaster.mguard
and it seems like every other day or so, it warns me that my RAM use is over 90%?
Maybe the reason why Samusng put 3gb of RAM on this phone is because the software is so bloated?

That's normal, and infact good.
When you close an application, it leaves a bit of footprint in the RAM. So when you open it the next time, it opens faster. Incase the RAM starts running out, android removes the earlier apps from it.
Stop blaming Sammy for just about everything.

Might wanna check what apps you are using and have installed. Uninstall apps you don't use etc.
If you have root you can freeze apps you never use and I disagree it doesn't affect the system performance. On a boot up just about every application loads into memory and that's plain stupid, since most of those apps I never ever use. I was actually shocked when I looked at application manager and everything was loaded into memory. It was main reason I rooted my phone, to freeze all the garbage and bloat on my phone. You can also delete some of the stuff, but it gets little complicated if you delete wrong app and then other things don't work no more. I don't know if they load all programs into memory because of "just in time" compiler, another idiotic idea, why compile program once, when we can compile and waste time, every time we start the program. When new, my phone would use about 70% of memory right from the boot and would go to 90% over time, now I freeze just the most obvious stuff and start at 40% memory load. There is a spreadsheet listing all apps, what they do if they can be safely removed, it could help you get better control of your phone.

I've just recently installed boot manager(requires root + xposed framework) to combat this very problem. It doesn't stop system apps from starting just user downloaded ones. TBH I haven't noticed any effect on the battery or the speed of the phone. Just when I restart, the phone has more free memory.

Since Google, just like Crapple thinks all their users are idiots and should be saved from themselves, yeah you need to root to just do anything on your phone. You can go to Application manager and force close programs you don't use without root but:
1. you need to do it every time phone starts one by one
2. some programs will restart by themselves anyway
When you freeze, you do it once and that's it. ROM Toolbox has pretty much all you need.
As far as 4.4 goes, yep you may get some RAM back but pretty much loose access to your SD card, if you have one, something like going from shower into the rain

KK introduces new permission for SD card usage that breaks writing to SD for most 3rd party apps, you can fix it if you're rooted or run custom ROM, like above poster, but I don't think there is a way to root KK without tripping Knox flag and so you may be loosing your warranty.
I'm rooted on 4.3 and my flag is x0, so for me this is the way it will have to stay.

Just to add to this.
Here's another app I've been using to clear ram.
Advanced Task Cleaner Pro (doesn't require root)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bright.taskcleaner
The advantage this app has over the regular way of clearing ram is that you can create an auto-kill list, which will stop apps from reloading back into the memory after being killed. It will show system as well as user apps and processes currently running.
Digging through the settings there's also a setting to clear ram on system startup(non-root alt to boot manager)
I myself have never got the "full or almost full" memory notification, so I quess I've never maxed out the ram. I think most of these memory/app killing apps(including the one above) are aimed at low and middle tier mobiles which don't have sufficient memory to cope with multitasking and background processes, without stuttering and slowing to a halt.
Since my battery life is good, and I'm more than happy with the phone's speed, I haven't got a real need to clear the memory all the time. I have a habbit of closing apps after using them, although leaving apps in the background and/or not clearing memory after closing will result in faster opening times. There are quite a few claims that these ram killer apps save massive amounts of battery and what not, from my end I don't see this, although its important to check for yourself and come to you own conclusions.

Empty ram uses the same amount of battery as full ram. Might as well have some things loaded into ram for faster access and so other apps calling on these resources don't have to expend your battery while trying to turn things on

I read on these devices it's supposed to be high. Sounds counter intuitive, but it allows quick access to ram or something along those lines. A quick Google search should help you out.

Btw, this is mine without clearing anything, I ran all my normal apps and kept them in memory. Sure, I can get low memory if I clear my recently used apps, but that is not reality.
unused ram is wasted ram so you don't have to worry about it
Stock rooted. 1.56gb idle
Thanks for all the reply. Thought there was something wrong with my device.
I'm on stock rom and I've debloated my device my self. I deleted apps and services, turned off other things that I couldn't delete. My RAM usually sits between 1.16Gb to 1.42Gb.
worrying about idle ram is like worrying about benchmarks...
both mean nothing in a normally functioning phone..
I just posted this answer on reddit, but I guess I will try and spread the word a little more so that these posts stop coming up.
Android uses the Linux kernel, in the world of Linux/ Unix for those that do not know.... Unused RAM is wasted RAM. You phone will remove stuff from RAM if its getting to low on free space.

Yep. If that bar isn't sitting at 2.4 to 2.7, you're not using it enough. The entirety of the RAM is getting refreshed every cycle regardless of whether or not it's being used.

This is true of any modern OS. Even Windows Vista or newer, which will cache commonly used apps in RAM to allow for faster app starts.

I would agree, that Vista and newer has gotten better, but I would still not consider them any where near as good as Linux / Unix.

[Q] Why is my S5 sluggish?

I got my S5 nearly a week ago now and I am not overly impressed. When I signed into my Google account it never auto installed my apps and I still haven't got around to it so only minimum apps installed, I have installed Clean Master and its constantly reporting slowness and to boost etc. Put it this way when I press the home button the home screen redraws most of the time, I had similar issues on my old Moto G, ram usage was nearly always full and its the same with the S5. Every thing seems slower than my Moto G which ran stock android, the camera esperically is slow.
Any ideas? I put it down to TW
My phone doesn't act like that, I don't use any apps like clean master either. Since you don't have all of your apps reinstalled do a factory reset. Maybe you have a lemon, maybe just glitches.
Get that clean master garbage off your phone, will do more harm than good.

Got to admit the GS5 is pretty poor when it comes to RAM usage. Mine is generally idling at about 1.10 GB and i don't have alot of apps installed as i only started using it this week. My GS3LTE was usually idling at around 800MB.
Your comparing phones separated by years and completely different hardware and functionality. Why would you expect them to be remotely the same as far as RAM usage?
I uninstalled Clean master and installed Nova, yes it has helped, I don't know I think I expected this phone to be blazing fast and its not, I think that might just be Android though.

I don't expect them to be similar, my point was surely RAM usage should get better with progress not worse., especially when the S5 mentioned is basically still stock and the G3 was two years old, and thus filled with apps that were using said RAM. Surly background usage shouldn't be so high straight out the box.
I understand what you are saying, but the s5 has more ram so Samsung was able to add more bloat and Samsung apps. The only way to reduce ram usage is to debloat your phone.

Nah my GS3 was the LTE version which had the same amount of RAM as the S5, ie 2GB.
Been considering removing all the bloatware, took a few of the service provider apps off and a couple of Google apps so far, but it's something I have to look into more before I get a bit too delete happy with it. Need to find a thread with a decent guide to what you can and can't delete. Don't want to brick my brand new phone.
Even with Bloatware though, it really shouldn't be a high as it is, when, like i said, my GS3 was idling at 200MB less and was loaded with apps.
There is a list here somewhere of apk's that are safe to remove. There are quite a few apps that the s3 didn't have that run in the background.

I am not having this issue, even when i was on stock it didn't seem bad(to me at least), i am on a rom and I have greenify and this that and the other, and i can idle with almost 600 or 800 free.
