Hi guys,
I currently own a Galaxy Note N7000, but am planning an upgrade. To the Note 2. Yay!
My Note gets really hot when playing games like Arcane Legends, especially if I plug in the charger (of course). Some times, it gets so hot that the top side of the screen burns my thumb!!! And that even when playing Arcane Legends alone, not charging at the same time!
I wanna know. Are there people who have owned the original Note and switched to the Note 2? If yes... those are the people I want to talk to. They know best how to compare the two.
Never had the N7000 but I can tell you that the N7100 never gets that hot. A little warm yes, hot no.

I wouldn't say it gets too hot, but if you play the right games it can get toasty. Not too shabby though. Any mobile device these days can get up there in temps. It is the nature of the beast. Getting smaller and more robust and trying to keep the temperature down is all part of the challenge. I wonder how well the a15/mod'ed a9's will run in the next year or two. Eager to see how well Samsung's exynos CPU pairs together with imagination technologies GPU. Exciting times for the android gamers as they might see more games and many of those ported from iOS or more time put into them. I really would like science to take advantage of our smartphone gpu's much like distributed networking on PC's.

I'm not gonna sit around and wait another year. I'll get the Note 2, as soon as I sell this Note. My alternatives are... the HTC One, which I doubt will shine development-wise, the Xperia Z which has poor speaker performance and cr*ppy screen and the S4, which will also suck development-wise.
Yeah, definetly not gonna sit around to wait for the A15-powered devices.
I hate my Note right now for the following :
- poor battery performance (despite its 2500 mAh battery)
- screen sucks so bad (plus, black clipping)
- overheating like hell
At least the first two are better on the Note 2 . Enough for me to upgrade.

If I play Arcane Legends over 3G for half an hour and both CPU cores are clocked at 1.4 GHz (maximum), my left thumb is gonna be prone to burns. No joke.

I am sure that the HTC One will get great dev development seeing as how that codeworx is getting the device, as for S4, it should also get great development as it is going to be a very popular device and most of the S4's are going to be Qualcomm not Exynos.

I had the Note 1 and now have the Note 2 and they are 2 different phones. The cpu on the Note 2 is much more powerfull and battery friendly than the one on the GN1. Temperatures are very good and haven`t experienced any heat issues. Switching over to the GN2 will only bring you advantages.

Oh yeah. At least the Qualcomm variant will definetly receive some love. Too bad Krait 300 is Cortex-A9, not Cortex-A15. But it's powerful enough. Way powerful than the cores in the Note 1, that's for sure.
*reconsidering options*
Won't have enough money for neither the One nor the S4. So, it's gonna be the Note 2. It's a powerful enough little tiny beast, anyway

Thank you for your input.
Battery life and power is exactly why I was considering the Note 2. Otherwise I could go for the S3, which has the same ammount of RAM (not really good for long term) and pretty much the same battery life as my Note. Not really worth paying 150 extra bucks for that... Better pay 200 extra bucks for a Note 2 :silly:
The screen is also an important factor for which I am considering the Note 2 over the S3. Screw pentile. RGB for the win!
Also, I know the Note 2 comes with a 2 amp charger. That's awesome! I will be able to play AND charge at the same time :silly:

How is that related to what is being discussed here?
Well, i had an n7100 which is on my mothers hands right now and i switched to the n7100.
The note 2 NEVER gets hot, like ever.. compared to the note1 which does get considerably hot when gaming.
Rest assured that you wont burn your thumb ever again with newer generation phones. Also, battery life on n7100 is brutal.

I did join the Note 2 club last week
I have to admit I was tempted to go for the cold metal beauty of the One, but delayed deliveries to Polish carriers took that option away. And wasn't that impressed by the Z. Not regret it much. That large screen is just beautifull. Who needs FullHD when it's already so sharp and amazing. Seems to be the perfect size too. Well, put it in a case and it gets too big for me. But having the extra screen estate over the lesser phones really is great!
Was initially put off by the horrible look of TouchWiz (have been using CM on my Galaxy S for a long time), but after customizing it a bit (inspired by coldfustion YouTube videos), I'm pretty happy with the results. I now mostly only see the ugliness of TouchWiz during calls and sometimes in the dialer (when it appears from a system call, rather then is brought up manually). Guess I'll proably eventually get rid of that too with a custom ROM, but I'm not in a hurry.
Coming from Galaxy S, I can really appreciate the GPS speed and accuracy. The volume of the loudspeaker is also very nice, even if clarity is nothing to write home about. Browsing and reading/writing e-mails is a real pleasure on this beast!
It does get a bit warm during gaming sessions, but it doesn't seem very hot and I hope its nothing that can cause an actual burn!
The smoothness is not that amazing too me though. I guess partially because I use MultiPicture Live Wallpaper and it always reloads the wallpaper during switching landscape/portrait mode. The default lockscreen was laggy as hell too (tried various fixes suggested here). But I turned that off and am now using the lockscreen from Go Launcher Ex, which is much faster (well, actually that and some icon packs are the only functionalities of that launcher I use... otherwise it's way too laggy, especially compared with Nova). But I'm sure the speed can easily be fixed with a custom ROM.
Just wish I could scale the keyboard down, cause it wastes too much screen estate (using Swype). And Multiwindow... the menus take way too much space... it should scale the content down as well, because as things are, very little actual content is displayed in each window.
^ A little off topic, but just wanted to say that all your wishes can be fulfilled with a rooted stock rom and simplistic and or xposed frameworks, including theming and dpi change, when you're ready for it

Hi.
I have been waiting for gs4 since 6 months. Now, its finally out, but seeing many reviews, i am shattered. These overheating, headphone jack and battery drainage issues are too disappointing. I need a new phone badly, as my current handset is taking its last breath.
I wanted to ask whether i should buy dis gs4 and believe in samsung that it will fix these issues, or i should wait for the galaxy note 3.
Please help me.
P.S. Kindly do not recommend HTC one and Xperia Z. Bcoz, i am already using HTC device and now, i wanna get into samsung.

Since there is no way for you to get the snapdragon version of the handset, You might as well get the Octa one.
Octa variant is much strong overall (Benchmarks) If you aren't gonna use LTE (Which you can't) there is no point for you to buy the Snap dragon variant.
Before you buy anyone of them (Get the Octa!) I want you to know that you can only have 8-9GB internal storage because of touch wiz being so huge in size.
I got s4 immediately after the day of launch ..Im having battery drainage problem with over heating ...especially whe charging my phone ..I am presently disappointed with it ...and I even visited service centre but no help ..just waiting for an upgrade which can solve these problems

I have had both of the models and i9505 gets way to damn hot for me, I have to wait couple of mins for it to cool down, So i can finally make a call. I never had the same problem with the i9500, Overall i find it better for gaming since the other kept on rebooting on me after it gets really hot.
Plus after seeing the i9505 behind a litte bit from it's variant, Why wouldn't i buy the better choice?

It's amazing how many people on this forum own both models when they're attempting to make out one is categorically better than the other.
I personally have never so much as held a I9500 and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. I will say, however, that I have never had an issue with overheating with my I9505 regardless of what I have done, be it playing games or other CPU intensive activities. Sure, it warms up sometimes but enough to justify the use of the word 'overheating'? No. Which leads me to believe you either have/had a hardware issue with your I9505 or you had the mediascanner bug without realising it.
Hmmm

Maybe that could be the problem, The camera app had problems too and it use to restart my entire phone (Hardware) So i replaced the phone and got another one and gave it to one of my family member, I haven't seen how it works but might give it another chance..
Plus benchmarks were much lower too & When i say overheating i mean that thing was really hot and it restarted every other day, Usually when in Chrome, Dead trigger, Youtube & benchmarks.
It was getting to point of me just getting annoyed, Anyways Cheers.

Hi all
I have two Samung S4's Both i9505, both same chips/processors/roms/kernels/everything (both are BTU devices and running Android stock 4.3)
Only the colour is different.
However,,,,, there is huge differences in Benchmarks on Antutu
I can see 29000- 29500 on the one S4... but only 25000-26500 on the other.
I thought maybe it was an issue on apps installed/etc... so I did a hard reset/wipe and only have antutu installed on each one.
This is not right... can anyone shed any light?
I've checked and CPU-Z reports everything identical
Maybe if people test...and post their results and Firmware/software versions.
I will edit and post screenshots of mine shortly.
Benchmarks are a waste of time and irrelevant to the daily usage of your phone
Does your phone work? Job done then...

It does work.. but when everything is the same... there should not be this huge difference between two identical phones.
One is performing very fast...and one very slow.
This is not "ok" as with the production quality in Samsung...this huge difference is not normal.
You'll never get anywhere with benchmarks...as I said they are a waste of time and not a true representation of your phone
You could be getting a false report...how would you know? You wouldn't...it could be a defective unit and your benchmark app won't tell you that
Ignore benchmarks and don't waste your time...if it really bothers you, send the slower one back.
That's why I say that benchmarks are stupid. I only do some to see if the performance of my device fell or to compare two different Android versions, but I don't use to compare one device to another, no matter if it is the same. BTW are you sure it's not a Galaxy S4 and a S4 LTE +? The second one normal score is usually 29k, while the first is 25-26k.

Hi
Yes.. They are both def 9505 and not a 9506
They are both snapdragon 600s.. and checked via CPU-Z and everything is the same
But.. after 4.3 update... (genuine OTA update not flashed via odin)... It is running 29000+ (it was 27000 before on 4.2.2 stock and the slow one was 24000 on same 4.2.2 stock)
I just wanted to know.. why there was such a huge difference. I totally understand devices differ slightly for no apparent reason.. and anything within 500-1000 mark..is fine (on two identical devices with same apps...and same config...same services/wifi/bluetooth etc enabled..)
There should not be such a vast difference of 2000+ between two identical devices.
Every CPU is made differently, that's why they have binning numbers. Some can handle higher clocks and some perform better under heat etc.
You really can't compare 2 i9505 because you think they are identical, inside they are not. The one that performs slower could have a lower binning and is throttling sooner. Simple as that.

I can't actually even finish Antutu on my device at the moment lol, it gets to 87% then FC and I get a score of 20k so you're lucky!!
Benchmarks don't mean anything. If both your phones feel fine to use then they're fine

Haha! The same already happened to me... I'm now running a benchmark every night to see if score changes too much, and mine is running more or less in 27k, but one day it got 24k lol. So I did other test and scored normally again. Worry nothing my dear @OP, like he already said if the devices are running OK there's no need to use a benchmark. Also, remember that they make small changes from a production series to another! My Nexus 10 has almost zero lightbleed, while many people complain of a big light bleed.
Hope this helps you a little... Probably you got 2 different production series.

Agreed. They are both working ok... and compared.. the z1 trounces them for speed... but I just like the way the phone works on the s4.. I think I will hunt down a i9506... (but then... not sure how much rom support will exist for this compared to the ones for 9505)
Thanks all of you though... I guess we are settled on "it is what it is"
I've got a truly scientific meathod for properly compairing 2 devices for you to try, take the average of 10 tests per device then see if their really is a difference between scores.

Intradevice comparion on benchmarks are utterly useless.
They only serve meaning when comparing with other devices or same device with different system configurations

Hi, sorry for the necro-posting but recently I got this exact same issue as well. Two GT-i9505 Samsung S4 devices, different Antutu scores. One device is the regular S4 (white), the other one is the LTE Black Edition:
- White Samsung S4 / Lollipop 5.0.1 / Antutu 5.7.1 ~ 29000/30000 score
After unboxing the Black:
- Black LTE Samsung S4 / KitKat 4.4.2 /Antutu 5.7.1 >> ~ 29000 score
After upgrading the Black to Lollipop 5.0.1:
- Black LTE Samsung S4 / Lollipop 5.0.1 /Antutu 5.7.1 >> ~ 25000 score
After upgrading to Lollipop on the Black, the Antutu scores dropped - reboot, power off, no changes in the score.
Uninstalled Antutu > Rebooted > Installed Antutu >> 30075, 31882 + score
As someone else stated across the thread, in my case maybe the LTE version is slightly different than the regular version - still, after getting these numbers from my experiment, as many also said across the thread - it doesn't matter what the benchmarks say, they seem to behave like glorified randomizers when it comes com computing the final scores.
If it handles properly, then it's ok...!

Perhaps you would be more enlightened/discouraged by reading about the exact same issue with the S6 HERE
In both cases, these are both devices running "bragging" ROM versions for MWC and also running a synthetic benchmark that is often derided as "non-representative" of reality.
Either way, I wouldn't be tempted to draw any conclusions yet. Early adopters pay over the odds in financial and ROM stability/performance terms.
odd move basing your buying decision on a phone thats being used constantly pre released and being charged at the same dam time smh
And all this is based on the fact that some would-be tech journalist from Romania tried to do some benchmark tests on a phone with non-final software on it and that has been on the charger for two-three days continuously, with its screen lit up most of the time and that has been played with by hundreds of people ... Let's be patient a little and wait for a test when the whole package is actually finished and shipped out for real reviews.

I had the same msg on my note 3... notting to worry about.. if your phone is at 57C, you'll see that msg in antututu if you want to benchmark

Read this, kind of lengthy but very well written.

Even if this is true would rather have a heating phone than a glass back phone with no microsd and running sampoop software that never updates still waiting for lollipop on my Note 4 worse decision ever trying samsung again I've never had a good experience with samsung u can have all the nice specs but you need software to back it up all htc's are currently updated to lollipop and should we talk about the bootloader easily unlockable does anyone remember the fact it leaked samsung paid people to give bad reviews on phones they have alot of money to throw around best is to try the phone yourself thats what the 15 day return policy is for

Couldn't make sense of your point as there was no punctuation...I have tired head now.
Even if so, samsung would be the last company I turn my head to if I leave HTC (after apple that is, but goes without saying)
I thought this was a joke. The same post is in the Galaxy S6 forum.
Anywoot, simple solution to overheating. Custom kernel and undervolting.
watched this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eqez7e5JTcU running benchmarks side by side and no overheating warning popped up on either phone.
Overheating on a demo phone that probably has the screen on for hours on end and is tethered into a charger...yeah that makes sense
Yes indeed.. Antutu already alarms when your phone is at 58C... Screen and charger always on, a lot of people play with it and run benchmarks.. not so strange it's going to be around 60C and antutu gives a warning..
Even the S6 will do exactly the same in that situation. I've had it also with my Note 3, when on charger
Not a big fan of Samsung's take on Android (TW) and I know benchmark results are not always reflective of real world performance. However, these results look pretty darn good for the S6 devices. Seems like some good optimization work has gone into these devices. S6 is pushing a lot more pixels.. don't know how the tests are affected by that.

Optimization... On Samsung! Pufffth. It was evident in previous cases that the Note 3 had cheated on bench marks. I'm not saying HTC hasn't cheated either, but just something to realize that benchmarks aren't everything and can be easily fabricated with some from of performance setting (i.e. higher clocks or performance governor).
My insights below. Maybe biased in the eyes of Samsung
After owning both the One M7 and S5 - I had a better experience on the m7 and the screen on the Samsung is very thin that it broke after I dropped it on the ground. I personally see a lot of people with broken digitizer's on the bus and this is probably why. In my case, my next phone will either be a Sony or a HTC. If you guys are wondering if warranty protects against this, it doesn't unless the phone's digitizer doesn't respond at all that means I'm not covered by warranty at all. Something to realize when buying any from of warranty.
that is inevitable, cortex A57 is a big and hot core

Nope but on playing high end games it gets warm like any other common android phone.

I'd like to add to that, depending on which phone you come from, the performance varies. From let's say a Samsung with touchwiz, it'll be different from a Nexus 4

A person coming from a high end phone and expecting same performance from mid range phone is just terrible thinking. I came from a lower mid range phone and I loved this phone's performance. Now with 6.0 it's much smoother as going by latest comments.
