[Q] MJ6 back to MF3 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

SGH-i337 got bricked and updated to *leaked* MJ6. I've found out that ATT has pulled this update from OTA because of it being really buggy. Battery life and everything has gotten bad. Wondering it is possible to downgrade from MJ6 to MF3. Already have the MF3 tar just not sure if I should flash it.
Thanks in advanced.

You can't downgrade even if you wanted to.
Sent from my SGH-I337 using Tapatalk

The qfuse on the S4 after MF3 was blown, meaning that downgrading versions will NOT work. Sorry to hear that. I don't know if Best Buy will flash 4.3 but it's worth a shot in trying.

Some people are having luck calling up AT&T and saying that 4.3 is giving them tons of problems. In some cases, AT&T is actually replacing the phone. So theoretically, you could call up customer care, and have your phone replaced with an MF3 one.

There's a smart move on at&t's part. Roll out buggy software and have to replace the phones. Nice!

[Q] Unlocked Bootloader? How to change it back?

I rooted my device a few weeks ago, and 4.3 released earlier, so I completely uninstalled root, through my superuser app. 4.3 downloads, and when it came time to install, it went through the install process in about five seconds, and booted up normally. I have an unlocked bootloader, I need help changing it back to normal? Is there a way?

If you are currently fully rooted and wish to stay that way then you NEVER want to update through your carrier! If you do take the update, your phone will be permanently un-rooted! You should always wait for the developer community to take a look at it and determine what the pit-falls may be and to produce alternatives (update based rooted roms).
And before everyone starts jumping on me for using the word permanently; My feeling is that until proven otherwise, it should always be presumed that the affect will be permanent to emphasize the potential severity of the action. I would be happy to be proven wrong!
We all know he either wants the padlock gone or back to completely stock rite.

Im afraid your statement has already been proven to be wrong. He said he is MDB and the update he is getting would be to MF3 and there is already a root method for that firmware. Permanent is a strong word, especially given the abilities of the developers on XDA, Temporarily is a much more adequate word to use, which would the case for 4.3 MJ9, TEMPORARILY, there isn't a proven SAFE root method....as of yet.

I think you missed my point. Yes, there is a a way to root MF3 but not a clean bootloader/recovery replacement. The reason for using the word permanent was to emphasize that there are NO guarantees of root for those who choose to update from the carrier as soon as an update becomes available. I agree that there is a high likelihood that some form of root will be made available but until that method is discovered the user should assume he/she will be stuck with what they have. An excellent example of such is exactly the MF3 release he is talking about. If you receive the MF3 OTA you no longer have an unlocked bootloader available and if you desire running another rom you are stuck with a kludge solution, not a clean one.

I'm not real sure what you mean by a "kludge solution", but I'm on MF3 with Safestrap and there are quite a few ROMS available to flash and some of them are as good as any I've run before (excluding none). I would be willing to bet that 4.3 will have root and ROMS available in a very short time. Im quite certian that Hashcode will have Safestrapup and running on 4.3 before ya know it and if not, I'm happy with the device and options I have with it as it is now. I do agree that anyone who chooses to take the update right away, and then expect all the development options, are wishful thinking, and/or not doing their research
MDB,MDL,MF3,MJ9
The above list has always been bootloader locked.yes rooted minus the new MJ9 and a "work around" to flashing roms.
I have faith that one day someone will crack the lock, just not before I switch to a Nexus 5

Same info as OP but only on this gs4. Rooted MDL twrp and uaing stock tw rom. Only reason i rooted was to bring my appdata from old s3 to s4. Never got notice of mf3 ir mj9.
Also cant for the life of me find the stock 3e recovery on here for the s4 to overwrite twrp

The reason I asked the OP is he was vague in what he was looking for... and if you are looking for the same answer to what the OP was looking for.. then I'm not sure I can help since it was vague to begin with.
You did however post some data that I think I can help or point you to.
1st let me start by saying that if you are on MDL, I would HIGHLY suggest you do not take any updates for AT&T (which you cannot anyway since you are on TWRP) If at any point you froze or removed files like LocalFOTA and / or AT&T Software Update you will NOT be getting notifications of MF3 or MJ9 from AT&T, if that TW Stock ROM was a custom ROM, it might have come that way, If not.. i'm not sure why you wouldn't get the notification. I would just be grateful I didn't but that's just me.
LOTS of people here wish they were on MDL (including myself) since MF3 or MJ9 have locked bootloaders. If you just want to update your GS4 then do a little reading here to find a TW ROM that is MF3 4.2.2 Based or MJ9 4.3 Based.

thanks I appreciate it. unfroze localfota and mf3 came through right away. still haven't done it yet and refroze the program. honestly I don't install custom roms and was looking forward to a couple new features of the 4.3. Namely gear support, the brighter screen and a newer modem that is faster.

[Q] Att forcing update

just got s4 yesterday. Came with mf3 Now this morning att is pushing an update to my phone... how do I stop it? Anytime I use wifi it startes back to downloading. .. Dont know what it is, or if it will make my wait longe4 for a safe way in, I assume if its from att, its not good! So how can I stop it???
With MF3 your pretty much stuck already. You can root it and install safestrap for MF3 but you are limited to Touchwiz based 4.2.2 Roms. Check out the threads for WHICH ROMS work for it.
The update your getting is most likely the MK2 4.3 firmware. With it you can root and install SafeStrap for MK2, there are some Roms you can run with it but they have to be Touchwiz Roms and based on 4.3 firmwares.
So basically if I was in your shoes I would just take the 4.3 update and root and install Safestrap for MK2. Then flash ShoStock MK2 for a BETTER than Stock experience.
If you could have gotten the S4 with MDL or MDB firmwares you could have used motochopper+casual to root and install an actual full recovery and flash anything you want. But those are hard to find unless you check Swappa for one with eiher of those firmwares.

If I were u.......turn off your wifi and take your att sim card off. ....... and also take your sd card out..... format it to EXfat and follow jortex new root for MF3 firmware. .... so when u rooted. ...u can install titanium back up from play store. ...and uninstall Att software update.apk then u should be ok..... but like RockRatt said.....since from now on everything moving forward with 4.3 base rom. ..... it should be nice to have 4.3 firmware. ......as of right now u able to root using saferoot method or kingo method and u can also install Safestrap recovery v 3.71 ..... Goodluck. .... ..

Unlucky you. Man id be pissed. Good news though im pretty sure google editions work with safestrap which still gives you 4.4. That's ofcourse if kit kat interests you
Thanks guys. I knew to disable the wifi for short term fix. I went ahead and held tight with the MF3 factory software. You guys are correct it is at 4.2.2. I did the root and quarantine of the updater. I just feel that I might be best waiting... I'm afraid that what ever comes down may make everything worse. I'll keep this and hold tight till something comes along that we can odin into it easy... I'm sure it wont be too awful long as this is a popular phone.
If anyone seeing my post is looking for the same thing, its here:

If I remove all this ATT bloat, will it harm anything? Dont know what will trip the rom up and make it a nice paper weight. There is NOTHING of att software.

Picking up an "un-used" Sprint S4, what software/baseband/bootloader is ideal?

Picking up an "un-used" Sprint S4, what software/baseband/bootloader is ideal?
Going to meet person at a Sprint store so I will confirm ESN is clean of course, but person claims phone has not been used so my question is what software/baseband and bootloader is ideal to have?
Basically I want to see if phone is pre Knox and if so I am not going to update it until I read up on here, but I am not sure what versions are pre knox.
Phone will be for my wife and I will be rooting it and I need it to be able to have the hacked/free wifi tether or built in tether, but I will want her to have the latest stock rom.
Thanks
MDC, MDL, and MF9 are the pre Knox. As these are 4.2.2 and below. MJA and MK2 are Knox being 4.3.

You can open the hotspot on any version. All the knox bootloader does is trip the warranty flag so if you root it you want be able to get warranty service from Samsung. In my opinion, the newest firmware just works better than the old. If you're getting a good deal on the phone then it shouldn't matter. Just know that if you root it which you will need to do to hack the hot-spot then you do void the Samsung warranty.

I did a good amount of reading last night and what I think I have learned is the following:
Rooting MK2 doesn't always stick and I must be using Philz recovery on 4.3, some say CF auto root does work on MK2 but some say it does not. Been reading that there are some wifi issues on 4.3 after flashing/rooting/recovery but not sure exactly what the issue is. Also, not completely sure if I can flash the MJA hotspot mod on MK2, I think one person said it worked but that is all.
I bought the phone used off of CL so I really don't care about warranty because I have no proof of purchase or even original purchase date. I think the guy had his receipt but he did not give it to me. I just don't want any rooting headaches once on the knox bootloader which I have been reading there are a lot of.

Mk2 roots just fine if you use the newest cf-autoroot files. Sometimes you have to install superSU from the play store afterwards but much easier than HTC. There is an MK2 hot spot mod. It is in post #337 in the hot spot mod thread. Also you can use twrp or philz recovery. Just make sure you are on the latest one. As far as WiFi issues. Some experience it some don't. I'd you do them just reinstall the mk2 modem with Odin and it should clear up. Good luck.

Thanks for the info, I am thinking that I may just take OTA to MK2 or flash to the latest (I think I just saw a thread that someone posted a flashable Odin file that is just like getting the OTA, Knox and all) and not care if I trip Knox or not.
The only possible reason I may not do this is if I can get insurance on this phone when I activate it on my wifes line (this is why I played the no flash count game on my E4GT). I am not sure if I even want the insurance but if I do then I have to worry about Knox.
Thanks again for the help and especially for the post number for the hot spot mod, that is very helpful.

The warranty flag is for warranty, specifically the Samsung factory warranty. It will not affect your ability to use TEP, Assurian, Square Trade, or the Best Buy insurance. Rooting and custom roms have always voided the factory warranty on all manufacturers. In the past, we usually had a way to reset the phone and hide the fact that we rooted it. The Knox flag at this point can not be reset so now Samsung knows you rooted it. As long as you never need a warranty repair you are fine if its tripped.

DARN IT!!!!! Just took the MF3 update...

Sorry man thats the worst thing that can happen. I guess kiss your bootloader goodbye
I know what you are going through, been there myself.
I was one of the first people to take the update before it was all over XDA that it kills the exploit. I had custom recovery for a short while, never even got to try out any ROMs ;P
My situation was unlucky, foolish nonetheless.
Had a bad ROM flash last summer using MDB. Reverted back to MDL just to start over. Tried going back to MDB before rooting, etc. because it was more stable. That was the day MF3 rolled out and that was the OTA I took without knowing.

Not really. If you are still on mdl, I envy you. You have no reason to upgrade to mf3 or mk2. Only if you want to be pure stock & the latest bloatware available from Samsung & At&t. You can flash whatever roms you wish on mdl. Okay, now where is my Skyrocket? I need to flash some roms damn it.

Both use Safestrap recovery...
on MF3 you can flash other 4.2.2 touchwiz and GPE ROMS since kernel is same (or close enough)
on MK2 you can only flash other 4.3 touchwiz ROMs, but no GPE roms. (There are some "hybrid" touchwiz ROMs, though, that have a AOSP theme. Check out Blackbox and Purified from the i9505 dev threads.)
