n900-w8 Updating Rooted Device - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, so I apologize if this is a stupid question or if it has already been asked before (did a quick search and didn't see anything relating to the w8 note)
My girlfriend has a n900-w8 too and she has got 3 updates since the day we got them (she doesn't root her phone) but I rooted my phone the day we got them, am I going to have to full unroot my phone, then update, then re-root? or is there a 'patch' type file i can use or something more a long those lines?
Don't get me wrong I hate touchwiz, but the only ROM's I like are cyanogenmod and PAC-rom which neither are released for the note 3 yet... *sigh*

root question

im not getting any reply in the correct thread so it looks like i have to create a new one!
im looking for some PRO USER advice here for an android n00b
on my tab it says current version : PDA:JJ3 / PHONE:JID / CSC:JJ3
but there is an upgrade via kies to : PDA:JJ7 / PHONE:JK5 / CSC:JJ5
can i still root after upgrade?
i have been reading the forum for a few days now and think i can still root via SuperOneClick?, but want to make sure before doing it as all the numbers are a little confusing to a new android user
(P.S. im a 10 year experienced NOKIA modder that has finally gave up on their crap firmwares and getting pretty excited about android!)
any sensible help is greatly appreciated
give it a try, after i upgraded to jm4(asian fw), still can apply root via SuperOneClick, but not z4root tho.
I could not root using either method. Can't remember which ROM version that was. That's what made me try to root the Tab manually. That worked always for any ROM version I have tried (JM6, JMD, JME, JMF). See this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859712
i updated to JJ7 and z4root still worked for me!
Congratulation

Yes, you will be able to root. I did this upgrade via Kies on my UK Carphone Warehouse supplied Tab and afterwards was able to root successfully with SuperOneClick. Just a word of warning, if you are tempted to flash your Tab with Odin or Hemidal to any of the JM series ROMs, read the warnings about the new protected bootloaders before you do the flash.
Enjoy your Tab!!

[Q] What to expect after an OTA installation on a rooted GT-I9505

Hi All,
I have used CF-Auto-Root when I first got my phone about 3 months ago and rooted successfully and it changed my device status from Official to custom and therefore I was never able to check for OTA or install them.
I have also tried CF's Triangle Away at that time but it never set the status back to Official until last night when I installed the latest TA version 3.05 and this had worked it's magic and my phone status is now back to Official and I found an available OTA and downloaded it but I have not installed it yet. Why? Because I am almost sure I will lose root after installing the OTA update and I am not sure if I am able to re-root it again as I have heard and read that Samsung is trying to lock things down to make it harder for us to play around with our phones.
I My current build number is JDQ39.I9505XXUAMDE so if I am not mistaken, that means I am on firmware XXUAMDE.
The phone does not tell me any info after it completed the OTA download about this upfate apart "Stability Improvement"
My questions are:
1. How can I tell if this new firmware is not going to lock things down?
2. Would I be able to easily re-root after completing the firmware update?
I just plugged in my phone to my computer and Samsung Kies is telling me this:
Current firmware version : PDA:MDE / PHONE:MD8 / CSC:MD8 (VAU)
Latest firmware version : PDA:MG4 / PHONE:MG1 / CSC:MG1 (VAU)
and asking me if I want to upgrade.
Can someone help me answer my questions and clear this for me?
Sorry for all these questions but I am just a little worried this update will be a bad move and I don't want to regret it.
Thanking you in advance for putting up with me and my apologies if some of these questions are repeated or dumb.
AFAIK, MG4/MG1 is not sooo new, and it's still not afected by the 'knox' bootloader thing.
I upgraded to MGA (AMN) some 3 weeks ago, using KIES, temporarylly lost root, but flashet CF Auto Root again, and .... voila! good to go again.
.... oh yes, I had to install supersu again from play store (somehow it was rooted, but the application was not there).
Hope that can help you!
Bak
Thanks Bak for the info.
I was doing some more googling and I came across these 2 pages:
http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/articles/4...ial-android422-xxuamde-jellybean-firmware.htm
http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/articles/4...roid422-xxuamdn-jellybean-official-update.htm
There is something wrong here as my phone is I9505 and it came with the amde unlike what is suggesting that official firmware for I9505 is amdn.
I got my phone from Voda Australia hence the VAU.
If I am reading this correctly:
Current firmware version : PDA:MDE / PHONE:MD8 / CSC:MD8 (VAU)
Latest firmware version : PDA:MG4 / PHONE:MG1 / CSC:MG1 (VAU)
Then after the OTA update then I should be on XXUAMG4 ? I really don't get this whole PDA / PHONE / CSC variables.
I am just tempted to install it and thinking if anything goes wrong or not to my liking then I can use the link I provided above to flash my phone with the official xxaumdn and this does not have the "knox" bootloader thing?
good decision mate! dont flash to the latest MH8 firmware cuz it locks out your fone.
sadly i've flashed mine without reading around. little did in know, MH8 includes knox with locked my phone.
right now i'm having root problems. tried using CF 1.60 the latest one.. which they said can bypass the knoxx thing. we'll i'm still having problems getting root access.. IDK why.
just wait and see. a dev might come up with some work around this KNOX bootloader thing

Just checked with www.samfirmware.com
If you select the 'check your firmware', you'll see that the last version for i9505 and Australia VAU (vodaphone) is PDA:MG4 / PHONE:MG1 / CSC:MG1
So your carrier (vodaphone) hasn't released the MHx version yet (versions MHx hsve the knox thing)
PDA / PHONE / CSC are different pieces of the software/firmware, and may have different releases (you can even play with different ones, for instance, a diferent PHONE to be able to sim unlock, etc....)
If I was you, I'd let KIES do the update (it's the safest, together with the OTA), and re-root it.
Good luck
Bak
Thanks Bak. I upgraded over the weekend and re-rooted it and all is back to normal now.
I even got Triangleaway to reset counter and back to official status.
Thanks for all your info.

[Q] Towelroot no longer works... ideas?

I'm pretty new to the Android phones. I bought a Samsung Galaxy Note 8 tablet about a year ago, and I absolutely love it -- which was the only reason why I considered an Android phone when it came time to upgrade. That might have been a mistake.
The phone I chose was a Galaxy S5 from AT&T.
For many reasons I won't go into (and that many of you probably know) Kitkat is awful. Removing SD card access removed one of the most important reasons that I bought the phone. So, I decided to root the thing.
I read a bunch of info on how to root, and, eventually downloaded and tried to use towelroot only to discover that AT&T/Google have blocked all functionality of that program. My build is, unfortunately, the latest build -- July 22 2014 (or there abouts).
Now, I'm not sure if the phone was given to me with that update -- I only got the thing on Sunday. Maybe it was, maybe not. Dunno. So I have a couple of questions.
If I were to factory reset the phone, would that roll back these "Security" OTA updates that were pushed onto the phone? I'm pretty sure there was at least one after I got the thing. I've spent a fair amount of time setting the phone up, but I'll do it again if a factory reset would allow me to root the phone and return the SD card functions.
Is there a way to push an earlier version of the ROM onto the phone. I'm guessing not, since I think I read that AT&T helpfully locked the bootloader.
Finally, does anyone know of any way to root this device if neither of the two paths I presented above will work?
Thanks for any help. If I can't restore the SD card functionality, I'll probably just return the phone. That would be a bummer because I was really excited about it.

I see that there are tutes here, and am wading through the 50+ pages of forum posts to find what I need. However, my worry is that none of this stuff will work because of the new firmware. Here is all the info that I have on my phone:
Galaxy S5 AT&T US version (SAMSUNG-SM-900A)
Android 4.4.2
kernel version 3.4.0-2178781 [email protected] #1 Tuesday July 22
Build # KOT49H.G900AUCU2ANG3
SE for Android Status
Enforcing SEPF_SAMSUNG-SM-G900A_4.4.2_0018 Tuesday July 22
Security Software version:
MDF v1.0 Release 3
VPN v1.4 Release 1
Thanks all the pertinent info, I think.
Because the update was so new, I don't think there's a way to root this anymore. People keep telling me to use ODIN and to download an earlier ROM (and I now have ODIN and an earlier ROM -- hopefully from a good source, but I have no idea if it is), but my impression is that this latest AT&T "security" update keeps you from reflashing the ROM because of the bootloader lockout.
Any further help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hello,
As I told you, the only method working for me (because of towelroot non working) is cf auto root.
Check periodicaly here http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/ to see if your model is listed.
I had just a look and it's not listed yet.
If it is, flash by odin and look if root works.
If not, you've got to flash by odin the same rom again (keep your original file on pc), you'll loose nothing, and report this fails on chainfire to test other solution.
Good luck

Not only build number and kernel version, you need to check your Bootloader version with Phone INFO ★Samsung★ app (in the FIRMWARE INFO section).
Bootloader version is one of the important info to check when you are going to root or flashing custom rom.

Hey that looks like a great utility. Thanks! The bootloader is G900AUCU2ANG3
Does that help any? People keep telling me I need to use ODIN and flash this, that or the other thing. Those comments would probably be more helpful if I knew more about this stuff, but my reading has lead me to believe that ODIN won't work with certain version of the bootloader. Or is that wrong?

[Q] D802 can version be changed?

Hello everyone
I recently purchased this unit in the store as unlocked international version. Since from that time we did not get out, for me more important update I never paid attention to the actually version of my phone. One time i got an update and install it ower the LG PC Suite. After that update I noticed that my phone installed a lot of applications that were on the Portuguese language, but since I could delete them I was not too worried. But today when came out official lollipop for D802 I went to the official lg page where I have seen that my device actually: "6MP / TMN (Portugal)". Is there a possibility to change it, because the last update that I received for this device was v20c?
I do not want to lose the guarantee on the device.
I apologize for my bad english.

About stock firmware update problem....

Hi, everybody, I'm a note 4 user from Malaysia, had been using it since it first came to the market. When I bought the 1st note 4 of mine, it's black, and from Malaysia Samsung shop. Later my girl friend got a pink one, from a neighboring country, Singapore. Then we both swap it and using it in Malaysia, with Malaysia's telco Sim cards. Recently, my girl friend note 4 (from Malaysia), got some official update for the OS, by OTA, from 5.0.1 to 5.1.1, and the newest is 6.0.1. She did update to 5.1.1, but stay at it and didn't up to 6.0.1 due to a lot of negative comments about it. On the other hand, the note 4 that I'm using(from Singapore), still stuck with 5.0.1, since the day we swapped. I did on the OTA, but I didn't get any notification about update for my phone. I tried to do manual update checking, by going into setting > system > about device > software update > update now, in case I might have miss the notification while I ran out of range of data, but yet I still a get nothing on it,it just show that the firmware had been update to the latest. At first this doesn't bother me much. But nowadays, my phone started to get wacky, and started to get randomly reboot. I was thinking an update to the firmware might help solve the problem. I did went to samfirmware and check out the newest firmware for my phone and I found that there is an update to 5.1.1 for it, so I try using OTA again to try to update but it failed, the result still say my phone is on the latest update, whereas my phone was still on 5.0.1. I wonder what went wrong with it. Here's my question :
1. Why can't my note 4(from Singapore) do an OTA update? Do I really need a Singapore Sim card to do the update?
2. I know how to flash using Odin, but I heard that many people do a factory reset after flashing new firmware, is this really needed? Cause in the old days, I just do simple flashing and straight forward using the phone(android before note 4) with out doing any factory reset after it.
3. How is the newest 6.0.1 getting along with note 4, need some expert opinions on it.
Sorry for the long story and bad English, I'm trying to keep it short and clear so that you can read them clearly and understand my question, thank you for any answer in advance.
