I've been trying to hold off on rooting my new GS4, but after a few weeks, the bug finally bit me. I got the custom recovery installed, and I installed SuperSU from withing the recovery, but due to some update errors when I rebooted, I never have gained root with the factory ROM. To be honest though, I don't care if I have root in the factory ROM, I just want to wipe the facory ROM and get CM onto my new device. Since I have a custom recovery, can I just say **** it and wipe and install the latest CM nightly, or is it absolutely imperative that I gain root in the factory ROM before I wipe and install a custom ROM?

I'm assuming ur on MF9 OK now you should have rooted first before recovery you can follow the video from www.qbking77.com on how to root MF9 but to answer your question I think you have to be rooted to flash any rom but it don't make sense you can't flash a recovery without being rooted it's weird that you have custom recovery and not rooted do you have super user app on ur phone?

Maybe it'd be more accurate to say that I can't get SuperSU working. I used Odin to flash a custom recovery, booted into custom recovery, flashed SuperSU, rebooted, but instead of launching SuperSU first, I updated SuperSU through Google Play. I then ran SuperSU and it couldn't install the binaries, realizing that I probably shouldn't have updated SuperSU before running it first, I uninstalled the update, then ran SuperSU, but it still cannot install the needed binaries, and since I was never able to get SuperSU working properly in the first place, I cannot gain access to /system to remove the SuperSU apk and try again. So I'm hoping that since I don't even care about TouchWIZ, I just want to get CM up and running, I can just boot into recovery, wipe everything and then flash CM.
I don't think you can do that without bonking ur phone need to get and cf root so it will install the root binaries on ur phone SuperSU will work without ur running cf root it will not work that's why ur getting the error can't install binaries that's cuz ur not rooted

Ok, thanks. I'll give that a shot. Is it going to cause a problem though that I've already flashed SuperSU, or will CF-Auto-Root just overwrite.
And on an unrelated topic, I've seen multiple times now while researching rooting the GS4 people saying to make a special backup of the efs folder to backup your IMEI info. I've rooted many devices now (Nexus One, Epic 4G Touch, Captivate, One X, original Galaxy Tab for Sprint) and I've never seen mention of making a special backup of the efs folder. Is this something new for LTE devices or what?

Awesome, that worked like a charm, but since that uses a stock recovery, I now need to get a custom recovery back onto the device, and that's easy. However, I remember when I first got my Epic 4G Touch, if I wanted to flash a custom ROM, I had to first extract the kernel out of the ROM, flash the ROM, then flash the kernel, then reboot. Eventually this was fixed so all you had to do what just flash the ROM and reboot and you were good to go. Will I need to flash the kernel separately with this phone as well?

No not that I know of buddy I always flash them all in the same package buddy never had to separate the kernel to flash anything so you should good flashing everything all in the same package but I'm sure whatever rom you run they will it op if you have to do that buddy
So I rooted the s4 with kingo root and everything went great. I then installed goo manager and installed twrp recovery...or so I thought. I then tried to reboot into recovery to flash the pac rom but my ohone rebooted into download mode stating that it couldnt boot into normal mode. Now ive officially rebooted into normal mode but how do I boot into recovery mode and not have that error again? I know this has prolly been asked before but im on my phone and its hard to navigate through thousands ofnpost to find the right answer.
Thanks in advance!

+1 and make sure you know what firmware you're on
what happened is you upgraded your bootloader to one that is "locked" and you can't go back. now you have to use safestrap recovery instead of TWRP. i did the same thing it sucks because now we can't use custom kernels.

Not if you're on mf3 firmware or newer. Do you know what firmware you're on?
im going to help you out because i went through this the other night:
first you need to do this to get out of download mode.
get odin3 for your pc and connect your phone while in download mode. if you haven't already get the http://developer.samsung.com/android/tools-sdks/Samsung-Andorid-USB-Driver-for-Windows and install them.
next download this
http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23321874045862958
this is 4 files you will put into odin to get you back to stock everything. this is 4.3 not 4.4.2 because i assume you want to have a rooted phone with a custom recovery and there is no way to root 4.4.2 yet or put a custom recovery on.
so when you unrar the file add the 4 files to ODIN and flash
NEXT: you should be in stock mode now. enable developer mode by going into settings about device and clicking build 7 times. enable usb debugging in developer mode.
now you can root. download http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2559636&d=1391563147 , extract to a folder. connect your phone to your pc with usb and run install.bat. go through the process. now you are rooted.
next you can install safestrap recovery mode (looks just like TWRP just you cant install custom kernels.... and only some custom roms, sucks i know)
http://goo.im/devs/Hashcode/jflteatt/safestrap/Safestrap-JFLTEATT-3.71.apk just run that and install recovery from the app.
so now you have your 4.3 phone with stock rom rooted and a custom recovery. IF YOU DARE try and flash a rom. go here for more info on that. scroll down to the part that says ROMS OVERVIEW
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2616221
i tried and ended up stuck in download mode again so i gave up and am chilling in stock 4.3 with root and custom recovery at least for now until i have some free time to try another rom.
THE END. hope i help some people with this

Hi, im trying to root my note 3 (SM-N9005) but im having troubles.
ive got the right Chainfire files and im following this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2466423
But my phone doesnt seem to finish or start for that matter the rooting process, i just get stuck at the part when the phone should just boot into recovery mode and the screen just has the note 3 logo and up in the left corner it sais:
Recovery Booting...
Recovery is not seandroid enforcing
Set Warranty Bit : recovery
nothing else.
im posting here cause i dont have permission to post into the other thread.

NOTE: Sometimes the device does *not* boot into recovery mode and root your device. Just do the entire procedure again if this happens. If it still will not install root and such, make sure that in Odin "Auto Reboot" is not checked. Then after flashing, pull the battery, and boot with VolUp+Home+Power button to boot into recovery manually. This will start the install process.
this? yes i tried it but it still does not boot into recovery, doesnt even boot loop just gets stuck in the screen i mentioned earlier
Now if i boot into download mode this is my screen
http ://i.imgur. com/SPO8jHF.jpg
Write protection: Enable ... is that something that can be a reason for this? :silly:
And what does Odin say ? If it says pass, you should do the "pull out battery and manually boot into recovery" and it should work. I still think you have the wrong file, maybe for 4.4.2 ? Maybe a bad download, try again.

You could, but you'll need a custom recovery. But more I won't tell you. Spoon feeding is bad. :banghead:
And the fact, that you didn't see the link for the 4.3 file, wich was posted in the same sentence as the 4.4 link, I think you should really do some reading.
Every rom has its installation instructions written in the thread.

Yes sorry about that. I just need guidance I can't find a recovery via Cwm for instance and the x note thread doesn't seem to have an install guide , I just want a kit kat based rom for my note and the last time I flashed a recovery+rom it was a galaxy gio and that was done via sd card and 2 zip files hehe

See, that's why I hate this. How can you say it doesn't have a guide on how to install it, if it clearly does. My first custom rom, coming from 4.3 to 4.4 was xnote. And guess what, i flashed it with the help of the instructions posted on the site, and a bit of Google search too. Why do i even bother, I'm over and out. Maybe someone else will spoon feed you.

Thanks for your help though, you helped me through it with the cf root, now im flashed cwm and am running carbon nightlies
So I've seen these threads before, but not for this build (since this Towelroot solution is so new). Here's what's going on.
Many of you have probably heard that NC1 is now rootable via a program called Towelroot (I'm a new user so XDA won't allow me to post a link, but it's the first result on Google). I am now successfully rooted, running 4.4.2 KitKat, build number KOT49H.I337UCUFNC1.
The problem is, I have no idea where to go from here. I'm told that since the bootloaders are still locked, I can't directly flash any custom roms with common recoveries. However, I have heard of Safestrap. So here are my questions:
What version of Safestrap should I install?
What can I do with Safestrap? In other words, can I run CM, Carbon, GPE and the like?
This may be asking a little much, but how do I go about running any of the above ROMs?
I feel really dumb asking all of these basic questions, but I'll probably end up feeling a lot more stupid if I brick my phone because I didn't ask the right questions. Thanks!
If you need to ask these questions you should not have rooted. Look in the general forum.

I freely admit that I'm new to this, so no reason to point that out. There are other reasons to root besides flashing custom ROMs, and I don't see any reason why I shouldn't have rooted. Every time I look through threads for my build, people just say that it can't be rooted (which is obviously no longer the case, since I'm successfully rooted). I just want to know what kind of capabilities I should look into, and as I understand it, the best way to do that and start tinkering is by using Safestrap.
Safestrap will allow you to flash touch wiz based roms. What firmware are you on?

As far as i know so far you can only install safestrap compatible roms ..Aosp such as cm and others I havent tried .. Safestrap gives you an option to create multiple rom slots ..Therefore you can run multiple roms without wiping one . If you have any other ?s feel free to PM me . Yes i understand ..I was about to throw my phone against the wall multiple times.. I can offer what has worked for me .. Downgrade to mk2. 4.3. You will get a semi functioning (No wifi or data) but thats ok .. Then you root it with kingo. And install safestrap 3.71 .. Then boot into recovery and flash Nb1_100%_Stock_Rooted.zip. Dont reboot system at that point reboot into download mode and flash the Modules. That will get you to a Stock rooted NB1 . Then there you can install 3.72 safetstrap.. this seems like a process which it is .. But it sounds like safestrap is giving you a problem with NC1.. I can confirm the method above works as i have done it multiple times.. Try to find a solution for your safestrap problem first. By the way . When you reboot your phone it should give you the option to go to recovery or system.. You dont need to choose reboot recovery.

When you reboot your phone it should give you the option to go to recovery or system.. You dont need to choose reboot recovery.

Also i only see safestrap for Nb1 not Nc1 ..Seems like it should be compatible Though

If all else fails then downgrade and get to stockrootednb1. You should have no issues using safestrap with NB1

Lmfao or you could get SELinux Mode Changer and set to permissive and not go through any of that and safestrap will install perfectly on 4.2.2 NC1

Thought NC1 was 4.4.kklmao on this end now
But good to know ..So SElinux mode changer will fix the safestrap issue on NC1 ?. could have saved me a whole night .. I have been cramming all this info in in one week bieng i just bought this device .. Gues that is what happens reading outdated threads.. Coming from a tmobile gs2 flashing world to this BS locked boot loader has been an experience .. What next your gonna tell me i can install a custom kernel to over clock with this Bl. Can I? lol..No but im serious
Hey, OP. Did you get everything working? I was curious if you got ss 3.72 working on NC1. I need to reflash my ROM (Hyperdrive RLS16) and was thinking I would update from NB1 to NC1 during the process if it was possible. Thanks.

Did you back anything up in your custom recovery? Even if you didnt check backups in recovery or factory reset. Did you wipe cache, dalvik, and everything for the rom, did you dirty flash?

Yes, I just updated to stock LP 5.0 via odin and then rooted and flashed custom recovery. I used the CF-auto-root (for G900R4) method on odin and flashed Philz 6.26.2 for custom recovery. Make sure under settings/security you have the "Reactivation Lock" box-unchecked.

It is safe and will root your phone with out issue. Of course you could always just go with the standard "flash recovery in Odin and flash Supersu in recovery". Simple.

Thanks I will try cf auto root , I hope it'll work with android lollipop
How would I go back to the stock lollipop ROM... I'm really confused my baseband version is BOG2 and I'm currently on ressurecion ROM remix... The problem is I don't have a CSC or PDA version number... Do I just flash the BOG2 version please help

Download the latest firmware for our devise. It is a tar.md5 file. Open Odin. Connect your phone. Place the .tar.md5 file in the PDA section. Click start. Done.
Assuming you have Odin and drivers installed correctly.

I'll give it a try thanks which version of Odin should I use
Edit 2: Never mind I put a lot of thought into this I might just stay on my custom ROM.... This is the only phone I have for 14 months then I will maybe get a new one, I really don't want to screw this up, I'll be stuck with a flip phone for 14 months

I download the latest one right BOG2 ???
I'm very concerned about doing this because I read in another thread, same issue that happended to my phone it ended up getting stuck on the us cellular 4g LTE screen and wouldn't do anything... After the guy flashed the stock ROM the phone was still stuck on the same screen after clearing the cache and factory resetting. I don't want this happening to my phone

Unless you flash firmware that is not compatible with our devised and you're using the latest firmware for our devise, along with the correct version of Odin, you will have no issues.

Honestly don't know if I want to go back to stock now found a really stable custom ROM
I was recently given this phone, on it Anroid 5.0
im finding its both a good an bad thing lol.
Are the us cellular links for 5.0 android correct?
Samsung doesn't have an unlocker but seemed to have the rest
Im a newb but from what i noticed upon writing all my phone info down, and correct me if im wrong but it looks to be that if you know your boot loader snd region of world the phone is from you can figure out that Your PdA is exactly the same az your bootloader and
The CSC is identical to pda EXCEPT for the 3 letters after G900R4 _ _ _
Those are your Country of origin or region
I lost my root. Tried using Mobile Odin and checked the everroot. But apparently it did not work. My problem is I want to go back to 4.4.2 stock firmware and I do not have a pc or mac at the moment. Can I use the stock 5.0 recovery to flash back to 4.4.2?
Mine may not be 100% on the authentic side. I just learned that the person who gave it to me got it from a rep at a t-mobile store because an anon customer had left it at the store stating that it had been reported stolen.. and it needs to be unlocked from Us Cellular

Great Post
Hello,
Id like to give a big thank you to all the developers/contributors that put together the rooting instructions in the developer section
A few days ago i successfully rooted my smg900r4!
it was very simple, and quick process using the instructions in the developer thread.
Using cf auto, super su, and odin. And Kies as backup
I will notate i had a little hiccup in the process.
It was a file type conflict regarding the samsung usb driver download zip being set to open in windows 8 and the desktop i used that was running windows 10.
Once i realized what the issue was a coulple setting adjustmemts later and i was done!
And as stated its rock solid stable
I am on stock rom etc.
I have installed the following apps and granted root access to them
- Apps2Sd (this is a very excellent multi function application !
- Busybox on rails
- App Manager iii (i had this installed prior to rooting the device.)
- Wifi Connection Manager
Couple questions;
Since ive installed the multi function Apps2SD application, is it redundant to keep app manager iii installed?
Are the hidden menus and settings only accessible by using the shortcut app found in playstore?
