It should be flashable via custom recovery but you must be on stock with no system apps removed or systemui modifications.

Use fastboot and the recovery image available through a link in that thread to go back to the stock recovery.
Or you could simply flash 4.2.2 through your recovery;

Yes, the custom recovery is what's causing the OTA self installation to fail. You must download the update to your phone, boot into twrp or cwm, and install the update zip.

Using a toolkit is most likely the reason why the OP doesn't know how to flash recovery. Using a toolkit again would continue the cycle...

[Q] Can i perform OTA updates after root if i dont have CWM or TWRP installed ??

Hello guys.. This is my first post and i am kinda new to rooting..
I did some research and rooted my nexus 4 using the NRT 1.6.3
I didn't install CWM or TWRP (Kept the flash CWM option unchecked under the ROOT button)
So basically I just have the Root access for the phone. Nothing more (i guess)
So am I still running on Stock Android ????
Moreover when any system updates comes in the future, can i perform the OTA updates or do i have to download it and install it from the recovery mode ???
Some people say that if u didn't install CWM or TWRP (Like i did), u can normally perform the OTA updates without any extra steps
But If u have CWM, then there are chances of bricking the phone..
I am confused. Any help would be appreciated
If you are just rooted and have not flashed any rom, which would not be possible without custom recovery, then you are still running the stock android and all the ota updates will be installed automatically
You have not installed any recovery and not any rom, then root should not be a problem for ota updates, they will come as usual and will be installed

Thanks for the quick reply.
I am almost sure that i have not installed any quick recovery, but if by chance the NRT automatically installed some quick recovery, and i dont flash any ROM, so can i still perform the OTA updates in the future ??
Is there still chance to brick my phone in doing so ???

What about unlocking the bootloader? Does that hinder in process of ota?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Since you have already unchecked the option for custom recovery, NRT wouldd not have installed any recovery.
Rest assured you are not going to brick your device performing ota updates
You can still check if you have any custom recovery installed by pressing power button and volume up and volume down button simuntaneously when phone is switched off
BTW i think that even having a custom recovery installed would not have effect on ota updates but a custom rom will surely be

Alrighty.. I'll try that..
If i have a custom recovery, what should pressing the power and volume keys do during a boot ??
I mean it will take me to the default recovery mode, or to the custom recovery whichever is installed, right ??
Yes, if you have not installed any custom recovery, it would take you to stock recovery and you would be fine

I know using twrp recovery allows you to still accept ota updates the normal way but im not sure about cwm
okay..
another question.. if i perform any OTA update, will i lose the root ??
Is there any way for performing an OTA update in which i dont lose my root ?

Thats a good link there. Correct me if i'm wrong, but my problem doesn't lie in any of the scenarios mentioned there..
I am stock + rooted 'without' any custom recovery..
is it just me, or there is no scenario mentioned there for such a case ??
You will not brick your device by ota updates
You dont have any custom recovery So there qould be no problem for ota updates they will be updated as usual
You should not lose root access while doing ota updates, and in case it goes away then how much time does it take to gain root access back with NRT?
And all the way google releases updates when everything has been done, so it is just one time update,
AGAIN, you are fine , there qould be no problem for future ota updates
And i think that most probably by the time google releases another version of android, you would be running a custom rom
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
You can be on Stock Rom with No Mods Unlocked Rooted with a Custom Recovery and you will get the ota update and it will install fine.
The ota update link will be posted here before you get on your device so it's good to have a custom recovery so you can just flash it. It will also protect you from losing root and your custom recovery

[Q] Nexus 4 OTA 4.3 update getting

Sorry for the noob questions but I tried to update my Nexus 4 currently rooted with 4.2.2 and Franco Kernel and I'm getting the error message "Installation Aborted". Do I need to unroot my phone in order to update to the 4.3 OTA?
Everything needs to be stock for the ota update.

Those were the only 2 modifications that I made. Would it possible to sideload 4.3 without having to return back to stock?

To install the ota, you can be rooted, but you have to root again. You have to be on the stock kernel and on stock recovery (for both how-tos can be found in the forums). Hopefully you didn't modification anything on the system ui or deinstalled some of the system apps, if you did you have to reflash a stock image, this can also be done without losing your data(how-to can be found in the forum), but In this case it would be easier to flash a 4.3 directly.
I'm sure you will manage your way. Good luck and happy reading
Franco kernel changes a lot of stuff, so u might get a bootloop. Just find the 4.2.2 stock kernel and flash of, then try to sideload the ota update.

It's update 4.3 while being rooted with flashed baseband for LTE concern

So I have a rooted stock ROM nexus 4 with flashed baseband from the prev 4.2 version to allow me to turn on LTE connectivity. My concern is I got the ota update notification will I run into problems my phone being rooted and with a different baseband version or will it all configure itself with the update? Also is it still possible to flash baseband back to android 4.2 version to get LTE connectivity? I also have a custom recovery clockwork mod will this error out the update? Thanks for your help
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
The custom baseband or recovery could cause an OTA update to fail. Flashing either would be simple enough to allow the update to pass the patch assertions and complete.

Your phone will not update thru ota, but you have cwm, why dont you download a stock 4.3. Zip and flash tru cwm?
Those zip files are without modem So your LTE modem will stil be there
For ota you need stock ROM, stock kernel and matching radio of the ROM

Hello yea so when I read these posts I already have attempted the update and sure enough it failed I tried thought the ota update and I also tried downloaded the zip file with the update and attempted to flash it using cwm but it still gives me the error and won't update do you think I should flash the original baseband for 4.2.2? And will work?

Try it.

I tried it and no it did not work I flashed to stock baseband for 4.2.2 and also unrooted using the full indoor method found on super user app and no dice

[Q] How to Update a rooted Nexus 4

Hi. I'm running a nexus 4 at 4.3 jellybean. I want to update to 4.4 kitkat. My device is rooted and I'm afraid if I do an OTA I might brick my device. How do I update my rooted nexus 4. Thanks.
Are you using stock or custom ROM?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Im assuming that you are on JWR66Y build number. If that is true download this and flash via recovery.
Flashing 4.4
I have a Nexus 4 on 4.3, JWR66Y running Purity build 8/26/13.
I'm wondering which file I should use to flash the new 4.4 to my phone. I thought I was suppose to use a factory image to flash fresh into a new google image, but each time I used SkipSoft Toolkit, it never was able to flash the system.img. It would say 'error: cannot load system.img' or something and the entire flashing process would end ubruptly.
Am I not flashing the right image? Should I go to stock then do the OTA update? What do you suggest as I'm not very skilled in teh nexus hacking :cyclops:
