I9505 turning itself off. - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello xda-developers!
I have this problem which have bothered me the past couple of days. Basically, yesterday, 18.11.2013. i played Dead Trigger 2 (game, not that processing power hungry, but still). My phone gives me notification every time when my battery level reaches 15%. Since August (when i bought this phone) i could use it, play games etc. ignoring the notification even till 2% was left, but yesterday, when i reached 15%, the phone automatically turned itself off and to turn it on again, i needed to connect it to a charger. And when i turned it on it showed me 0% battery. I don't want to believe, that my phone drains 15% in a matter of seconds. I'm really worried about it. Could it be some kind of battery issue or phones? I've been very gentle with all my phones, so this is a big thing to me.
I'm still running Android 4.2.2 because my S4 is rooted and i can't manually update it via the keys or unroot it because S4 doesn't support my old Windows XP SP2.
Looking for a solid answer. Thanks in advance.
P.S. This is my first ever smartphone.

Sounds like a battery issue.
Check it's not swollen in the middle and check the serial number.
Batches starting with BD are known to be faulty.

Checked the serial number and it starts exactly with BD. Also, didn't notice if the middle was swollen, looked pretty good.

In that case mate I would just go straight back to the place you purchased it and tell them that you are aware of this batch of batteries being faulty and you would like a replacement

Battery problems

I have the T8585 HD2, recently ive been having troubles with the battery...
I was getting intermittent battery drain for no apparent reason, the back of the phone would get very hot. Searching I found that this had something to do with the SD card not being formatted properly, did this and havent had this same issue since.
Last night I charged the phone while on my PC, was approximately 80%. I wake up this morning and the phone is dead, wont turn on. So i plug it in to charge again and then it starts to do the soft reset loop thing, I just left it go for about 6 or 7 loops and then it seemed to settle. I look at the battery capacity and its 0%.
This explains why it was dead, but why the hell is the battery draining to nothing over night? I did not notice it getting hot last night and it was dead cold this morning. Battery terminals are not bent as some others have suggested as a cause for this.
I really like the HD2 but this battery thing on top of the poor capacity for the this type of phone is really starting to disappoint.
I have not messed with ROMs yet, so its running the following that i got with the phone...
ROM 1.66.707.1 (76641) WWE
Radio 2.06.51.07
Any ideas on this would be helpful!!
Same phone, same software
I have exactly same phone & software, I upgraded rom to this 1. But have had no problems with phone at all. Few soft resets at 1st, but then started deleteing messages, shutting down programs in background, no problems since. Hope you get figured out,,
I'm having the exact same problem. I've had the phone since November and, although the battery doesn't last like it used to, since about 2 days ago the phone has gone haywire!
I haven't installed any new apps or used the phone any differently than usual but, after getting readings of between 15 - 20mA in standby (with Battery Guard) I'm getting on average 490mA now in standby! Crazy! The back of the phone is getting so hot that I'm actually worried that it might do the phone damage and, like the OP, I'll go to bed with a full charge and wake up with the phone so dead that I have to pull the battery before I can start to recharge.
I've removed some of the PDF files and other things that might be causing slowdown etc due to but there is definitely a problem. Does anyone have any ideas of what kind of things I should look for that could be causing this before I contact the insurance guys for a replacement?
Thanks in advance
Im having a similar problem with my HTC raphael with WiMo 6.5 Roms didnt tried if the problem exists in 6.1.
My phone is fine today, was 100% last night, 95% this morning. Im starting to think this is a software issue not hardware due to the randomness....

funny you put it this way.... its actually the other way around.... nevertheless i understand what u mean (off-topic, just couldn't resist ;-) )
when the power usage jumps from 20ma to 490ma and gets very hot the battery has started to fail - don't be surprised their qualty is hit or miss. I'm on the T8585 HD2 (1.66 rom) since November and a few weeks ago the battery would get hot in standby and battery life dropped by half. I popped in a spare battery and problem instantly went away. I've since bought a 1,300 mha battery from Mugen, phone runs great again.
Hi. Had a similar thing with the battery drain, but the last few night I have put the phone on charge as normal and in the morning I have Nealy dropped the phone because of how hot the back was. Any ideas?
Happened again today, fully charged last night, 0% this morning. Very unhappy about this, this is a serious reliability issue that a $700 phone shouldn't have.
I would suggest checking your task managers processes, I had a process - Filesys.exe that was using 98% of my processor for long periods of time and absolutely eating battery life.
Yeah i have installed battlog to see if that will shed any light on the problem...
Did u try hard-resetting ur device?
no, im trying to avoid that at this stage, I want to find the source of the problem.
Had the same issue. Phone worked very well for a few months and then this battery drain + overheating issue started all of a sudden. Tried hard reset, disabled 3g and problem continued. Finally, got my phone replaced with great difficulty and problem solved!
Anyway, check the signal strength. One of the issues could be the phone trying to connect repeatedly when the signal is weak. You can also try to disable data connections to see if that causes the problem (Disable all autoupdates like email, twitter, weather and so on).

[Q] [Help] My battery is draining too fast, some soft problem ?

I bought this Hero off eBay, and it was dodgy since the begining.
The phone had cyanogen, and was restarting itself occasionally.
So i wiped it, installed 2.1 and it got fixed, but now i have a problem with battery drainage.
Its insance, 10minutes-10% im pretty sure its not supposed to be like that. with or without wifi/3d turned on, its just riddiculous.
I borrowed battery from a friend, and that didint make any change, i installed latest update from the autoupdate in the phone and still its bad. I read somewhere here that its faulty email app that keeps on trying to sync and drains battery, how do i fix that ?
I did a full wipe, cleared cache and everything back to factory settings, with no apps installed it goes from 100% to 0% in an hour.
I downloaded 2.1 from some android forum, as i was unable to find one here (there are only links to 1.5 on the xda.wiki WHY?)
If you can point me to a proper 2.1 (or higher?) software to download that doesnt do this crazy **** i'll be happy as infant on crack.
Please help, here is my software information:
Firmware: 2.1-update1
Baseband version: 63.18.55.06JU_6.35.09.26
Kernel version: 2.6.29-063c4d24
Build number: 3.32.405.2 CL191507release-keys
Software number: 3.32.405
Browser version: WebKit 3.1
Try calibrating your battery it gave me a huge boost on my hero... went from getting 16hours day.. to about 30hours on a single charge!!
Every time you flash a new ROM you need to calibrate your battery. The battery meter in the OS (Android in this case) is generated based on the battery stats file.
Battery stats is erased when you flash a new ROM.
Easiest method of battery calibration when you're intending on flashing a ROM:
Ensure battery is fully charged according to the OS. Switch phone off, unplug charger and plug back in. Once light is green, leave charging for another 30 minutes (light goes green at approx 95% charge).
Switch on, flash ROM. Allow first boot to complete.
Shut phone off. Disconnect charger. Remove battery. Replace battery. Place on charge, light green, leave charging another 30 minutes, yadda yadda. Switch phone on, boot immediately to recovery. Wipe battery stats.
Boot phone up. Now would be a good time to install JuicePlotter. Use as normal. Do not charge, let the battery run down completely. When the phone shuts itself off, power it back on. Repeat process until it won't switch on anymore.
Remove the battery. Put the battery back. Turn the phone on. Repeat until it won't turn on anymore.
Now charge the battery on the mains to 100% while the phone is off, keep charging for 30 minutes after light goes green. Power on. Voila, fully calibrated battery.
The last part, run until completely dead and charge only needs to be done once in a while (this is calibrating the battery innards, not the battery stats)

hah, yea thats what i accidentally figured. phone was switching off, but when i powered it back on it had 30%.. and it was like that 3 or 4 times.
I ran it down completely and now am charging it till max, we'll see what happens. at worst i'lkl start your process from the beginning thx !
I diidnt know you had to do that. i've been playing with my G1 and not even once i had to calibrate that.. maybe i should
How'd it go? Any improvement on battery life?
it diidnt help I did what you quoted step by step and its still running down the battery like crazy :/ what else can i do ? im thinking of switching to 1.5 but thats just not progressive and my friends phone is running fine on 2.1, with the same battery even.
Edit: i've installed task killer and killed all the mail checking apps.. hope that is the problem
Edit2: it didint help at all, in 5 minutes i lost 15% fcuking hell !
I just switched to 1.5 and its still happening ! I using a different battery and its just as bad... why is this happening to me
ill try second to latest radio from xda wiki.. im running out of ideas, what else can i do ?
That really wierd... its not the battery if you have tried using different ones. Its not the ROM if u have changed it.
Have you tried disabling auto-updates? and auto-checks for emails. Which email client do you have? you should find the option to "sync-never" in the app settings.
Buying it from ebay is kinda ominous though.. was it described as faulty? perhaps you could contact the seller and request a refund is all else fails?
you can try using setcpu to underclock the cpu.
i have similar situation as you. before going to bed around 11pm, it showed 50% left, turned on airplane mode, then in the morning around 6am, phone was powered off.
now it has been 2 days, still have 20% left.

Did you ever take into consideration that some part of the hardware might be damaged?
Devices that got water damaged, sometimes show weird symptoms as well:
- They still boot up and seem to work well from the first sight
- The battery drains very quickly
- Some of the peripherals are not working stable or not starting up anymore (e.g. wifi, bt, gps)
- Other crazy things might happen as well (e.g. random reboots, backlight flicker, etc.)
So you might have a look at the mainboard. Red stickers indicate water damage!
Regards,
scholbert
Yea but if it were damaged would it show 50% battery after restarting thinking it had reached 5% ? i dont have the tools or will to unscrew it.
i paid 100 pounds fo it, the normal price of a used hero, but the auction said "phone restarts for no reason" and they do not accept returns, so im propably screwed :I
I had an old blackberry 8300 curve, i had it in the bathroom while i was showering, got too moist, turned the detection pads red but phone seemed to work fine after i dried it out. But the battery went to crap progressively in the manner. I would charge to 100%, take it off the charger and maybe an hour it would say less than 10%, do a battery pull and it would go back up to maybe 80% and last maybr another hour and keep doing that till it would normally drain on top od the numerous reboots i would be doing until eventually it would just drain and die.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Can dead pixels cause this ? i have like three.. but then again why would it show 50% after restarting from 5%..
the thing is its not draining the battery, just registering it wrong
Any updates on this? Any resolution?

sorry mate i have tried everything unsuccessfully and returned the phone to the seller.. dont tell me you bought it ? (london)
No, but i have a samsung galaxy tab and experience similar symtoms. It does not bother me too much, the battery life is still great. Just the percentage is off and i need to restart from time to time.
I read similar complaint from droid x forum too.

Power related issue

I'm finding that sometimes when I plug in the tablet to charge even if they battery is almost full, as soon as I plug it in it will think the battery is at 0% and start shutting down.
When I power it on and look at the battery stats it shows that the battery went to zero and then goes back up to were it was before the shutdown.
Also another issue is that the battery status will say its not charging even though it's not plugged in and the level never goes down even after a reboot. I find to fix it I need to go into a custom recovery and reset the battery stats for it to return to normal for a few hours.
I'm running on the stock image.
Its annoying, but I'm hoping that the next update will fix this.
Can't say I've ever experienced such an issue, on any device. If your looking for a fix, perhaps reflashing the factory image completely might help (I don't understand the battery stats file too much, but I would think a reflash would probably replace that file, and fix the problem).

I thought I was the only one with these problems. Never had these issues on my Galaxy Nexus. Now on the N10 I have the first problem you mentioned + battery % not moving until I reboot the unit (Random). Very annoying...I called Google Play support and after doing some test told me that they'll send my a new unit.
Note: I've flashed the Google image and I still had the issue (seems less frequent)...Sometimes I can have the % correctly refreshed and sometimes it stops after a few minutes.
I've attached screenshots of the problems...(1st image) Long straight lines were when I was actually using the device!! Cut in graph = reboot
Second image: both problems, check out the spike a 0%!! when plugging usb cable

I have the same issue and my replacement is on it's way.
So I called support and I'm getting a replacement device.
I've been searching everywhere, thanks to this thread now I know I'm not the only one having these exact same issues. Looks like I'll be making a call to Google Support
Probably a software issue to be addressed in a later update.
Are these issues still present on the replacement devices?

So far not happened on my replacement device. Went from 70% to almost 10%. Still testing. Also wakeup time is normal. I think it was hardware related.
EDIT: on my 3rd day and this new device always correctly reports battery life. Definitely hardware.

I'm having the exact same issue with battery % not updating at random times and then sometimes the n10 claims 0% battery after recharging overnight and promptly turns itself off. Did the replacement unit fix this for you?

I got my replacement unit 4 days ago and the problem is definitely gone! On my first device it also happened since day one.
My Nexus 10 just started doing this after a reboot last night, I guess I'll have to ring support and get a replacement.
I'm running a custom kernel, recovery and unlocked bootloader. Do I have to flash back to complete stock before I send it in?
Cheers guys
I'm not sure if I have this issue, but my N10 is definitely acting strange.. I put it in my bag this morning on 42% charge and when I took it out in the afternoon it was dead (I thought I might have hit it to something and damaged it), but when I plugged it in it started to charge after a few minutes from 0%. Then it rebooted after like 5 minutes without me touching it and it's charging for now. The battery stats don't show a drop to 0%, the graph ends at 42..
I've had this device for around 3 months now and never encountered this issue before, so I'm not sure if it's really a hardware issue, but I'd be quite disappointed if I had to get a replacement as this one is a really good one in terms of the other common issues (bleed, throttling, creak).

[Q] Popup low battery notification doesn´t shows up

Hello everyone,
I recently bougth (1 month) my samsung google nexus 10, and when i connected him, at home, i see that it comes with 4.2.
When i connect it to my network by wifi, automaticaly upgrade the system , now i have 4,4,2 KOT49H.
My problem is, my tablet rarely popups the low battery notification. I tried to install some app i find in google store, and i find this one, battery notifier bt free 99, where i can set a custom sound for low and full charge battery.
But no way to work neither.
I install this app in 2 other devices android (1 tablet , 1 smartphone) with android 4,2.2 and it´s works.
Do you have also this problem with yours google nexus 10, or it´s just me.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Sorry but I don't quite understand your problem. Is it only not showing the low battery? Maybe it's the case that it doesn't even get to 15%, which is the first notification. My tablet, for example, is shutting down on 20%, so it doesn't show the notification. If that's your case as well, then you should recalibrate your battery (I need to do with mine as well ).
If that's not the problem, then I'll need to examine further... For now, just make it clearer for me .
~Lord
I had to buy a new battery mine would always say 100% but when it was dead the tablet would shut down I could recharge but still always reported 100 are you having the same problem? Mine was brand new from eBay he sent me another tablet and said I could send my old one back or keep it for 75 so I did that a battery is around 40 on eBay and is easy to replace. For me anyways.

hey my battery on my nexus 10 is not acting up. It will charge to 100% but soon as I unplug it, it will shut down a few sec/mins later and while completely off it show that the battery is either 0% or 100%, but wont boot up pass the animation screen. If I leave it plugged in for a while it boots up all the way and then it shows that its at 0%. However after only a few mins it will show that it is 100% working. So Im not sure if its the actual battery or some sort of corruption between the actually battery level and the data file that shows u the battery level. The funny thing is that I can go in and navigate all through Recovery Mode with now problem....even when the tablet shows that its at 0% and wont boot up pass the animation screen. So Im really confused. Any suggestion or thoughts? Also if i have to swap the battery how easy or hard is it?

I have the same issue: battery stays at 100% no matter what I do. It is a NEW REPLACEMENT BATTERY which I got over e-bay, to fix the old one which had the erratic behavior as decribed above (either 100% or 0%, not even booting up). I see 100% charge always, thoug it does react to AC (un)plug. What is the solution here? There is buch of people writing at forums to replace the battery, but it was not the fix for me. Is it possible that the replacement piece is broken as well? Or is it software? Or some pther hardware module, which may be replaced?

Maaann Ive done so much research on this and couldnt really find anything. I have no idea what the problem is....one part says its the battery....another part says its something else.....I think theres a miss-communication between the battery and the charger (I think). They are not speaking the same langue. But thats just my personal opinion. I took my tablet apart using a friend tool kit to see if maybe discounnecting the battery as well as the other port would do anything...but nope...nothing happened. I still get the same results. I was then forced to call Google...who ended up transferring me to samsung becuz Im not longer on warrant (time expired). Samsung said for $108 they should be able to diagnose..and fix my tablet (including shipping both ways), provided it doesnt have water damage or any physical damage. (which can lead to paying more money). Im just going to do that bcuz at least I know the work will be guaranteed. Im a bit nervous bcuz my tablet is rooted and has a custom rom on it, But at the same time it shouldnt matter bcuz im not in warranty anyways, So hopefully i'll be good.
All that being said.....I really dont which is causing the issue.

brand new Galaxy S4 with battery problems and no help from Samsung!

Hi Everyone
I’ve bought yesterday a brand new Samsung Galaxy S4 here in Brazil (model GT-I9515L, it’s a Snapdragon 600 4G one), and I’m kinda worried about my battery life, which drags 1% every one or two minutes on simple Wi-Fi web browsing, I have been from 100% to zero in less than two hours, and I honestly don’t think that is normal.
I’ve tried a lot of things, I tried disabling some battery dragging features like the gestures, gps and etc, and still got terrible battery life
I’ve noticed that if I sit the phone down idle (screen off but powered on), it doesn’t seem to drag the battery much, when idle it seems equal to my Nexus 4 that I had previously, I'm starting to miss this phone more and more since I got the Galaxy.
The charging time is normal too, it goes from 0 to full in average time, two hours or so.
My phone is in 4.4.2 Kitkat (TouchWiz, unrooted) I’ve haven’t done anything to the phone other than apply OTA updates once it turned on the first time.
I’ve tried doing a factory reset via the settings menu (is this the same thing than reseting from recovery?) and not installing anything after but still got the battery drain problem.
Thinking that it was a faulty battery or phone I’ve brought it back to the store (an official Samsung Store here in Brazil), but they told me that my software was out-of-date, which I thought was strange because both the Software Update menu in phone settings and Kies found no updates to be applied.
I watched them as they put my phone in Odin mode and plugged my phone into one of the store’s computers, opened a program called “samsung master” in order to update my phone, but they couldn’t do it because my “Knox” was somehow messed up (which isn’t because it shows as 0x0) and told me to come back another day when the technician is there.
I became really frustrated with this, so far what I could diagnose was that somehow that my battery drain problem is a software one, and is solved by some kind of update that isn’t available by Kies, just in Samsung stores.
Can you guys give me any directions? I’m open to suggestions and if you guys need any other information, please tell me that I can post here, sorry for my English because I’m brazilian.
Drain almost always applies to when your screen is off. If you don't have drain while your screen is off, then it's perfectly normal.
2 hours of screen on time is perfectly normal. Your screen uses power, not much you can do about that.

When it's off, the batteery seems to last, but the performance is way worse than on my Nexus 4 (which is known for it's bad battery performance) when it comes to screen time, I've got near the double web browsing time on the nexus.
Your galaxy drains battery like this too? it seems insane to me. 2hours from 100% to zero without any of the features, brightness on the lowest level, only Wi-Fi on, I don't think every galaxy is like this.
When I brought them to the store, the salesperson told me that it had an update to be applied, but when I search for an update or put it into kies it shows me as up-to-date, do you guys know anything about that?
Here you can find the latest
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/
Though I doubt a firmware upgrade would change it.
And yes, 2 to 2 1/2 hours screen on time is what I get.
