When the windows 8 was released and are able to support ARM processors, I was elated.
So I went about looking for ways to install and review the windows 8 for myself on my netbook. And I must say, I am pretty impressed so far.
The foot print of the platform is definitely smaller and the running of apps much more efficient than its predecessor OSs.
Now I am all hyped about wanting to port the windows 8 to my phone.
I was surfing around the web for installation info or guides to port the windows 8 onto my Omnia 8. But I cannot find anything useful.
Any one here knows how to do that?
Please advise.

Yeah... I know.
But I am sure the ARM version will be scaled down to fit mobile devices.
Take the tablets for example, if the windows 8 is not scaled down specifically for the ARM versions, a 16GB tablet would only have about 2GB of memory left after the windows 8 "Upgrade".
Then those who have 8GB tablets, would not be able to even consider installing windows 8 on them!
hmm... looks like we will have to wait for the mobile versions to be released.
Any news or rumours in the grapevine?
Have you guys learned anything more about the Windows 8 RT/mobile version. It would be really great if someone can port it to the Omnia 2.
First of all, if there's already a thread about this, sorry I didn't see it but I searched.
My question is will there be a way to dual boot Windows 8 and ICS (or whatever Android we have during Win 8 tablet releases)? I've seen all the dual boot tablets introduced at Computex and INSTANTLY fell in love with the idea of having both the OS'es at my fingertips, but at the same time I know the official solutions will be unnecessarily expensive.
I was wondering if it's theoretically possible to buy a dedicated Windows 8 tablet, not the RT version, and eventually mod it to run Android. This will make my fall purchase of a tablet so much easier.
Not possible if the tablet has windows 8 ARM installed
If a tablet comes with Windows 8 ARM Preinstalled, you basically can't dual boot ICS on it. Why? Because Windows 8 for ARM requires the tablet manufacturer to enable secure boot on those devices. Thus, enabling secure boot won't let you dual boot Win8 and Android on it. Microsoft is very clever, they do really start to block linux and lock the tablets to Windows 8 ARM only.

Yea I know you can't do it with the ARM tablets, that's the windows rt version. I was asking towards the other regular Windows 8 tablets. Can you dual boot ICS on those?

Yes, you can run Android on x86, but many of the native apps won't work as they're made for arm processors. Take a look here: http://www.android-x86.org/
intel is putting its medfield CPUs, which are x86 atom-based SoCs, into android smartphones right now. Expect to see the same chips in W8 tablets. with that said, it should be fairly likely to see a dualbooting tablet.
also, i'd like to point you towards the Asus Tranformer AiO, shown off at Computex.

It's already been done on some PCs, Laptops, and including a windows tablet. Check it out here
Take note that this is only Android-x86. A ported version of android for x86 devices
You can find the Android-x86 project here
Here's what a tablet with Windows 8 RT inside http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YR5Xh_1U35s
Would it be possible to run x86 windows 8 on the new medfield phones like the Orange San Diego and the Lava Xolo?
It would be interesting to run the metro ui on the smartphone itself but it will get better if you just hook up your phone to a monitor/laptop dock and enjoy a windows desktop experience (like the motorola atrix and this).
I have always been a fan of the OQO UMPC and this would be the modern version of that.
thank you
I have dual boot on a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (which has a x86 Intel processor) with Windows 8 Release Preview and Android ICS.
First I installed Win8 using a boot stick which you can create using this tool and the cd image you downloaded. Then I shrinked the size of the Windows partition to free up some space for Android.
Then I used the latest Atom image from Android x86 to install Android from another boot stick using this tool.
When installing Android don't forget to install GRUB boot loader.
Once you done that you can choose which OS to boot every time you start the device. Unfortunately it doesn't work using touch. You have to have a USB keyboard attached to choose the entry that is not default (in this case Windows 8).

I think running Win8 on a Phone with a x86 cpu like the medfield atoms from intel is possible, but you can't run metro apps on the phone's screen itself because the phone only has a resolution of 1024x600. Metro apps requires 1024x768 in order to run and in order to use "snap", a resolution of 1366x768 is required. So I think you need to hook up a mouse and a keyboard on the phone in order to enjoy the new metro feature of Windows 8 on a phone hooked up to your HDTV

Unlikely, as win8rt will only come as builds dedicated to a specific device (with that device) and the win8rt bootloader requires a secureboot-enabled EFI bios with _only_ the MS keys embedded. (E.G. how often did windows CE get hacked onto a device that never had it)
_If_ we see win8rt on other T3 Kai platforms, that end up exploitable _and_ people are able to hack out the EFI secure bootloader stuff, then _maybe you'll see a ropey build do the rounds, but I wouldn't count on it
No and why would be the answer.
Windows 8 won't run windows apps and it's a step back to the dark ages in UI design.
Microsoft have also locked have ensured that windows 8 will only boot on approved hardware with signed EFI certs. This also means that a windows 8 ARM tablet won't boot anything else either.
Sent from my LT18i using Tapatalk 2
Windows 8 RT sucks anyway, even if it was ported most people wouldn't care because it's RT and Arm based so it's not like your installing diablo 3.
now if someone releases an intel x86 android tablet, thats another story.
Still, can't wait for Microsoft Surface Pro, that thing looks amazing.
As everyone has said, It is not possible. Even if someone got the EFI to pass, windows RT was not designed for tegra devices.
Questions go in the Q&A section
Yea. But can it run Crysis?

Any Nexus forced to run Windows would die of shame... Might as well ask if it would run Ios6.
This has troll written all over it. Shame on you OP..lol.
sorry... (hangs head in shame)
Don't be ashamed. This is a very legitimate question.
Windows 8 finally brings a true mobile windows. And it would be awesome if the nexus could dual boot into it.
Now Windows 8 RT kinda sucks ass since outside of office your just running windows phone apps basically though i'm sure that'll change eventually.
Plus, windows 8 is not really meant for a 7" screen, more like 10" minimum right now.
but as it's been said, it'll probably never happen due to many different reasons.
my advice, save up for a surface pro thats coming out in december/january

well there have been rumors, that windows RT surface ( love Microsoft is using the same product name for a intel and arm based product)
will be two hundred so it wont be a high barrier to try the windows 8 tablet
Install Splashtop on a Windows 8 computer and use the Splashtop Metro testbed app on the Nexus 7.

RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)

uhhhh in the dev community yes it is.
After using W8 for a few weeks I have gained an unexpected interest in W8 tablets and phones. A Surface with W8 Pro could be really sweet.
Windows 8 CAN run on arm, we know that. Or at least, a modified version can anyway. What do you reckon our chances of getting a Windows 8 port to our devices? Maybe a port from Microsoft's Slate Tablet? Maybe the only thing preventing this would be legal issues?
I realise some XDA members may find this proposal ridiculous, but I thought I'd just put it out there anyway .

Wouldn't happen for a couple reasons. First and foremost is that the Nexus 7 does not meet the minimum hardware requirements set forth by Microsoft for Windows RT tablets. Secondly, it would further undercut their OEM contracts since RT is currently only licensed to them. Thirdly, there's a lack of drivers for our hardware. Fourthly, the bootloader would need to be locked down tightly with no way to unlock.
Finally, I highly doubt you'd ever see it ported, as any dev who did try would find themselves on the losing end of a rather substantial lawsuit coming out of Redmond.

While I don't technically disagree with what you're saying (Port is unlikely), I do disagree with some of your reasoning. The requirements of Windows 8 compared to the Nexus 7 are irrelevant, XDA is all about getting devices to do things they were never designed to do in the first place. The HD2 is a great example of this, as it runs ports of every major mobile OS out there (as well as a few not-so-major ones). This kind of shows that how it affects OEMs is somewhat irrelevant as the same thing can be said about most devices from the Windows Phone/CE days. Even if that were true, the numbers of people who would actually buy a Nexus 7 just to install Windows 8 on it (or who WOULDN'T buy a Windows 8 tablet because they can use their N7) are probably very small.
Similarly, I don't think Microsoft has ever taken any of our developers to court. A C&D might get sent out, but that's probably the height of it. It certainly hasn't prevented developers from trying before.
I think the bootloader is completely irrelevant as well, why does the bootloader have to be locked down? To meet Microsoft's licensing requirements? That doesn't make any sense, nothing would be licensed (Which is what makes the whole thing a grey area for sure) so licensing requirements don't matter. The fact that we have reasonable control over the bootloader is actually a massive advantage.
The real issue that you've mentioned is regarding drivers. There's very few RT tablets out there right now so there isn't a lot of drivers we can pilfer (Although it probably will help that Surface is based off of Tegra 3 - which is what the N7 uses, albeit not the same type). Never mind that, not a lot of research into RT has happened just yet so the ability to pilfer ANYTHING is up for debate right now - surface is certainly going to be locked down to a large extent and as far as I'm aware there aren't going to be any System Dumps lying around that we can use either so there's a lot to do before even considering porting to something like the N7. I doubt anything like that would happen any time soon and by the time it does (assuming it ever does), the N7 might be old hat. None the less, I wouldn't rule it out as a definite no, just more of an extremely long shot for now.

I've toyed around with Windows Mobile 8 and Windows 8, it kinda reminds me of what windows ME was supposed to be ( being sarcastic) , it's a good OS but nothing to loose sleep over. By next year we will be asking for a Windows Mobile 9 port that will also never come to light.

wondows architecture is x86 based. windows rt is arm based. on nexus7 impossible to running windows desktop os. however, its possible to running windows rt on nexus7 if it's bootloader unlocked and customized for booting win rt.
