Hi there - I'm working on a Flash Lite application for PocketPC, which is designed to have web connectivity and for a single use event.
I've discovered that the only way to initiate and then maintain a data connection for Flash Lite is to open an IE window on WM5 and refresh it on occasion, then refocussing back on the Flash app.
I've tried the persistent registry key hack, which works fine when there is a connection, and does maintain it - however my application is for people wandering around in and out of "signal" coverage areas. So I really need my app to re-trigger the data connection somehow.
Flash Lite 2.1 does have GetURL commands, which I'm using, but once the data connection dies, nothing appears to re-establish it. So I've added an indicator to show this problem... but its a shame it can't reconnect on its own.
Any ideas guys?
I've even thought about a work-around - like task switching and "refreshing" the IE http session using the hardware buttons, because that does seem to work, but obviously its not the best user experience really - and obviously I want to keep my application running fullscreen rather than showing IE during that process - and confuse the user.
I've messed around with PQzII, to try this - but its pretty hard to configure... and the author hasn't responded to any questions - and I'm not really that sure it will do what I need in "the background" if you see what I mean!
Has anyone tried something like this, is there a simple standard app I can launch that is already in the Pocket PC windows folder to kick start this using a hardware button trigger if no such reconnect is ever going to be possible in the FlashLite environment?
I've looked on the Adobe site, several people are having this issue already - and information is scarce unfortunately!
I'm looking for a simple application that will run in the background, and send the current GSM/UTMS cell-id to a web server on a periodic basis (via HTTP GET).
Basically a program like cellGPS (http://www.vikinggames.hu/product.php?id=11) but for Windows Mobile. I don't really care about GPS info, since that just sucks power (and doesn't work indoors).
What I'm trying to do here is enable my home automation system to know where I am, without sucking my phone's battery to death (especially since GPS won't work indoors). GSM/UTMS cell-id is 'close enough' for me.
The application would just hit a webserver on my home machine with the current cell-id (http://webserver.com/receiver.php?cellid=4233-23) on a definable period. My own app on my webserver would record that data into a database. I can then go back and use that data to let my home auto system know "hey, Justin's almost home, turn on the HVAC, lights, etc".
It needs to be able to run in the background, no annoying icons on the screen, and start up on phone reset.
I figure since it's just sending the cell-id (which is always available), it would be rather efficient and not use much battery power (especially since I usually leave Activesync on "instant" so the data connection is usually up anyway).
Other extensions to this would let my server update twitter/facebook/etc with "Justin's at ... home/work/etc now.".
Any ideas on where to find something like this?

That thing is a buggy piece of junk. I tried it out and pissed off all of my friends when it updated my location 45 times in an hour.
But yes - it would be very similar to that - but it wouldn't maintain a local database.
I am unable to switch off the setting to stop downloading data automatically although I have unticked the box.
I continues to update the weather every hour complete with graphics.
I would like to switch it off and only download when I need it
Any suggestions?

I have a french version, but I try to translate, the naming will probaly not exact:
1) go to parameter (settings) page.
2) tap on "DATA service" (service de données in French)
3) Here, you will find what you want, "weather" and then untick "auto download"

Are you sure that is the Weather the cause of update ?
Ther are a lot of other aplications e-mail, Stocks, GPS update, application update,....
By me all this things seems to work well. Elsewhere, there is an application that stops all the phone communication : nodata. I do not use it but I read this work very well on mini.

See if the program "NoData" doesn't help you. It allows you to black access to the internet via your phone system. Sure worked for me.

The Weather tab is a big resource hog. I also suspect some bugs in it that can cause your phone to freeze. (Not verified yet. But one of my prime suspects.)
I would suggest to disable the whole weather thing altogether.
Which resourses does the weather program hog? I magine that it's a load on the battery, and the graphic use up a lot of memory. Are there any others? I would never use my mobile provider to update anything in my phone. I do it when I sync or find a hotspot.
How would you disable it?
I am only curious, so when you have a moment, I'd be interested in your response.

Primary the ram memory. I notice it ate up several megabytes of ram. I forgot to jot down exactly how many. It certainly is not as small as 1Mb or 2Mb. Somewhere closer to 10Mb. It's huge.
Disable it from "Personalize Home Screen Tabs".
Basically, take it off the tabs. And don't update it. After a few days, it will just die off.

Alright guys, I believe I have found a decent way on how to prevent Amazon updates while using the device. Some may have done this but maybe haven't mentioned these methods because I have never found a thread on this. If you have other ways to block Amazon's updates, please don't hesitate to post! This is to help you and me, all ideas are welcome
1. Blocking WiFi
I found a neat app on the Google Play store that allows you to block inbound and outbound WiFi transmissions, (or you could just turn off the WiFi yourself, but hey, are you fast enough?). It is called "Net Blocker". Upon starting the application, select every Amazon application (including settings, which is the gear icon) and check the mobile and wifi boxes. You should see the wifi and mobile icons disappear next to the application names. One more important application to disable is your current LAUNCHER. This way the WiFi/Mobile Data is disabled when using the launcher. The WiFi/Mobile Data will be re-enabled if you go on an application that isn't blocked. EX: If you are using Silk Browser (with WiFi/Mobile Data enabled), and hit the home screen (with launcher WiFi/Mobile Data disabled), the WiFi/Mobile Data will disable on its own, since you blocked the launcher.
2. WiFi Timer
Amazon likes to be a butthole and likes to update while you sleep. This app is called "Wifi Timer", which is on Google Play, that allows you to set a schedule when you want your WiFi on or off (or you could just turn off your kindle and not use it). Just add a schedule, select all the days of the week, and where it says "stop wifi" set the time whatever time you go to sleep. It should disable the WiFi at that time if not already disabled by Net Blocker. (Just to be really safe, set a bunch of schedules during the night to disable WiFi) (Also I don't know much about what happens in the background during the update process, but if the application is still running in the background, I'm sure that the WiFi would turn off during the downloading process if your schedule turns the WiFi off. But Amazon probably closes all the running applications before starting the update process so that nothing interferes with it.
I must state that these methods are a tad bit risky (for now). A big flaw in these WiFi methods is the Kindle's feature on remembering the WiFi's password, EX: When the Kindle Update starts, it will search for your saved WiFi and automatically connect with the password it remembered. So if we can find a WiFi manager application that will purposely forget the WiFi's password so that you have to always put in the password every time you want to log in, then that will fix the flaw. Again, Amazon will probably prevent that type of application from running in danger of stopping the updates.
These applications work on the kindle. For those who want to directly download the applications from Google Play use Evozi's Apk Downloader (search for it on Google). When you get to the website copy and paste the Google Play address of the application and click download.
3. DIY Zip Dummy
There has been some debate on this method, I don't recommend this because I'm pretty sure that the kindle has it's own partition for system updates. Basically in this method you fill up you kindle's memory with a zip file full of memory to take up space "preventing" the kindle from installing anything else because of insufficient space. But I wouldn't do this, unless you do it for testing and you want to risk yourself into getting an update.

That was a huge error on my part, I meant to say droidwall, which is the application that requires root to block addresses and applications from wifi.

I would just like to add that there are several "battery saver" apps in the kindle store that will immediately disable wifi when the devices screen is off. This way you don't have to worry about schedules at all. When the device is not in use, WIFI is off.
Despite the fact that I blocked all the Amazon stock apps- settings, kindle,etc. I can still download things. This is quite worrying, if I can download it, maybe the kindle can by itself? Maybe I am missing something, lets hope its something obvious.

Could it be silk browser? It is default when it comes to downloading files. Depends what application is downloading. I had no problems preventing downloads, whenever a download is launched by any application (that had the WiFi disabled) the WiFi shuts off, like the Amazon Appstore, and my browsers. Make sure to have the launcher shutdown also so nothing will connect to the internet while using the launcher.

Try bolcking Download manager. Nothing can be downloaded without this feature.

I don't like seeing the same mistake happen twice. There are some good ideas here but there is only a hand full of ways to block the ota update and the most effective ones need root.
1. Roms that removed the ota apps and functions. -root
2. Airplane mode or turning off wifi
3. Apps that block wifi or try to filter it (extremely risky)
4. Tools that disable ota. (My kfhdx utility is one example.) -root
Until we crack the thing I wouldn't joke around with firewall blocking or trying to do so (<-- the mistake I first made).
At least we have ways to block ota effectively. Requires a little patience.

Thanks for the notice, ill update the thread with that warning before attempting these.
Also as a precaution I would recommend going to the WiFi settings and go to your nearest connections and "forget" them, that way if out of nowhere an update starts (which will never probably happen) it won't have anything automatically to connect to.
Been a long time since I posted here.
I don't use my Nook as much as I I could or I think I should. I think the main reason is that I haven't been using apps which sync across devices for fear of ruining the very good battery life.
What are some good apps which integrate with say Chrome? What things have you found useful? Do you toggle WiFi on and off? If so do you then need to hit sync or does that partial wakelock reciever for detecting that WiFi is on and off do that for you? Or will this app keep trying to sync even when there is no wifi?
I think if I start using something like ReaditLater again (tap button in chrome, sync and then read on Nook)... I'll probably use it more.
Also, pulling apps off Google Play and installing the apk was better for battery but I can't get the apk extractor websites to work anymore. Did anyone have a workaround for that?
One more thing, I have been using the latest Cyanogenmod and I notice it comes with PrivacyGuard. Now, the interersting thing about that is that PrivacyGuard now has options to block autostart, keep device awake and wake up device. So this could be useful to put in a ROM, or something like it, bearing in mind the nice battery life we get. Or, maybe have 2 modes - one with everything disabled for hikes, and another for use at home where a charger is handy and the auto sync is more useful.

Yeah, Renate NST's adbsync program is definitely going to be your best (and really only) option that fits your description.
Thinking about it, there's probably more efficient ways to do it.
For example, Evernote, Unified Remote Full, Wiki Encyclopedia Offline. I don't think Pocket (formerly ReaditLater works anymore very unfortunately... that was my favorite thing)
But of course, getting these things working on the older Android now could be difficult. How do I get the apks from play these days now the various website extractors don't work?
And ways to automate adbsync. For example, have it as a schedule in the background along with adb connect to your Nook. But remember to give the Nook a static IP on the WiFi by assigning via MAC on the router.
If you save pages as .pdf and automate the sync that's good but browsing pages as pdf isn't great.

I don't know why I didn't think of this before but you can access Evernote through the web interface. Probably similar for OneNote too.
A browser I heard is good, possible better than Opera now is NakedBrowser and the apk is available from the authors website.
I found a way to get the apk is to find an old phone to install too and then use an apk extractor app. A desktop extractor would still be better

The problem with advanced is that I have to wake up the nook, turn on WiFi and then hit my sync script on the desktop. Because of this I only use it if I have a lot to read, like a full book. I envisioned using it for just reading lengthier forum posts and white papers.
A start I think is to disable the screen saver.
Next will be to put enabling WiFi and keep awake while charging, and then disable after a period if the user fails to cancel and it's unplugged.
If you know how to do either of these things please let me know.

I can't install the tasker apk unfortunately... and they're not giving out licenses anymore without Play. Is there an similar alternative is now my search..
Would be really good to enable and disable adb wireless and wifi when plugged in.
Actually there's a fix for tasker asking for a .jar. So it should be possible tonautomate connecting to WiFi and adb WiFi. Just a matter of getting tasker license or something else. AutomateIT won't run.

My Nook is currently out of commission, but I know at one point I had Pocket running (while it was still called ReadItLater), so there might be an old apk floating around that works. Alternatively, you can setup Wallabag, which is the same thing but run on your own server. Between that and a feed reader, I had thousands of articles to pick from whenever I picked up my Nook. It was quite a delight.
Also, there are a couple of wifi saving tools that can be found in F-Droid. If I recall, I used one called Battery Fu to have my Nook connect, force a sync, then disconnect once every few hours. It worked quite well.

I looked up wallabag but when I try to install every version back to 1.6 I get the message 'older SDK'. I guess you had an older version... but I don't know how far back i have to go.
