[Q] wifi tether? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone gotten Wifi Tether working on the Sprint version of the G2?
I just got this phone and rooted it and installed TWRP. Wifi Tether doesn't seem to work. It starts with warnings. the logs says: "Setting ad-hoc mode failed"
I've tried the latest Stable version, as well as the beta and experimental versions.

To add to the multitude of these threads that are already here, why not. I have managed to get it to not throw any errors, however it doesn't appear to broadcast its SSID. Same story with Wifi Tether Router.

Nope. There's no working way. I've been using PDANet to USB tether.

Are you getting data throughput? I can live with no ssid broadcast see you can just manually set an ssid. The lack of data throughput is the problem though.

No, I tried manually creating the network on my laptop and it still couldn't see it. inSSIDer on my laptop didn't see it, so it's an issue with the app to wifi chipset.

Was just about to start a thread on this and then I remembered the golden rule..

I wish others would follow suit, I think I created one of the first threads on it....and it promptly lost traction. I managed to get wifi tethering up and running for a bit using some iptables script I found in the HTC one forum, but it stopped working after a minute or two. I'm about to have to go back to our old GS3 because I live off tethering for work when I'm at client sites who don't have wifi.

Well I'm patiently waiting for something to develop. I would be willing to even donate for the cause.

The thing is do we know how Sprint does tether provision checking? I looked at the GS4 hotspot mod zip files and it looks like the services.jar file was modified to get wifi tether to work. I wonder for the Sprint LG G2 if the behavior is the same where we have to modify the "services.jar" file to get wifi tether to work.

I did exactly the same thing, ran out of time trying to figure out how to repackage the smali files or something. I found the differences between the two though.

How did you decompile the services.jar in the first place? Don't you just do the reverse to repackage it? Do you mind explaining the tools you used and the specific smali files and lines that you saw that were differences. I want to see if I can replicate this.

I just rooted my shiny-new Sprint G2, in hopes of getting tethering going, as well, but disappointed to find out we haven't got a working method for it yet. I noticed they got it working on Verizon via a custom provisioning APK over here. I'm no developer though, so will just keep my eye out for a fix, thanks.

I havent looked but I thought I heard rumblings about the sprint moto x getting tethering working. My guess is the files would be similar as tethering is a sprint thing. Maybe taking a look at what some other recent devices are doing to get thethering to work on sprint would help. Im no dev so I cant do much but its just a thought. Checking out some other recent sprint devices and their tethering issues/resolutions, if any, might help.

Tether to Zune HD

Hey,
I can't seem to get my Zune hd to jump on my Droid 2 Network, anyone knows how could i do this?
i already tried using the latest version of the Wifi tether
Thanx!
just confirming i couldn't get it to work either. I rooted my phone and that was the first thing i downloaded and was disappointed when it didn't seem like wireless tethering worked, but i tried my fathers DX and it connected to my droid 2 fine
You might try goggling "google wifi tether" and see if that application fixes it. I'm not familiar with the zune hd so I don't have any specifics.

Trust me, i used every search method available NOTHING. the only thing that would work is a tethering application capable of Infrastructure tethering
For some reason I thought it was capable of infrastructure mode. My bad.
I've heard there was a way to hack the 3G hotspot so that it doesn't charge you but I don't remember if it's been proven okay on the D2 or not.
EDIT: Now I remember where I read it. It was in the Android Development section>the sticky from Darkonion "Droid 2 Information Directory":
3G Hotspot for Droid 2
Hosted on Droid Forums, see post #4 for info.

This hack is not legal and violates your Terms Of Service from VZW (from a post in the link) But allows infrastructure mode with the existing 3G hotspot app without costing you the VZW rates!
Here's another one from the Info Dierectory that can do it without being rooted:
How to: Rootless 3G Mobile Hotspot - AP/Infrastructure Mode (by Tekahuna)
In the Droid X section, but should work for D2 as well!

Sprint Hotspot on unoffical froyo? "Block Authentication" out yet?

I am looking for a way to use the sprint hot spot on the leaked froyo build but it does not seem to be out yet.
Is there an app that works the same way as sprint hot spot. I don't want ad hoc because it does not support some devices. If anyone has anything that does not require "flashing" a custom rom to get this I need to know.
I found Moble AP but you need to flash it with clock work recovery and I would lose the froyo build.
Thanks in advance
No dice on AP and 2.2 on Epic. If AP is that important to you, go back to 2.1, else live with wireless tether and Ad-hoc.
If you search you will find what your looking for.
We have nothing got froyo yet but people are working on mobileap. We are still on a froyo leak so stuff like this is delayed cause official froyo may be different then are leaks
Sent From Da Hood.
I am guessing that means we have nothing for foryo yet and mobile ap is in the works but won't be out untill the offical release. I just hope I ca get it on the stock rom and I won't need to flash a custom rom to get it to work.

Anyway we r getting of the main topic now. I am just going to flash back and get a custom rom that has it built in. Anyone have any recomendations on one?

You don't need a custom rom to use Wireless Tether. You just need to root your phone. Takes about 5 minutes or less. Why would you want to use the sprint app? The WT app has much more capability.

...Not if your device does not support adhoc wifi networks. A lot of gadgets it seems don't like adhoc wifi, so Mobile AP would be an alternative.

You seem like the person to ask with as much knowledge as you know about phones and all the work you've created; good grief. I am stuck with Sprint and cant leave until next year without paying ETF; long story short; get terrible service and have airave (only works half the time and have 3 replacements-sprint does not want to address to issue; and me being on a SERO account probably doesn't help either) but someone in a different thread mentioned about a sprint diagnostic tool that you can use to force your phone to Roam verizon towers and get the boot rather quickly from sprint; unfortunately he said it was only for samsung devices; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1774503

No you don't need to change your prl. Also, Several Shift ROMs like newSENSE Supreme Sense and StockMod have roam only as an option built in so you don't have to buy roam control if you don't want too.

FREE USB, WiFi, Bluetooth Tethering

I know someone probably has posted this already but over an hour looking for a suitable solution without installing some app on my phone and computer...
I was running CleanG3 on my Epic and the USB and WiFi tethering worked fine but got sick of the update notification to FC09, so I resetup my phone with Android 4.0.4 ICS and CyanogenMod 9 B3. Normally I would simply ask on that thread but my account limitations says I can't...
I want to use the built in USB or WiFi tethering but it has to be "unlocked" first because I'm not paying Spring $40/mo to use my own unlimited data. Even the Bluetooth tethering would be cool, but really I only need one of them to work and prefer USB.
Anyone know of something I can flash or what ever to get rid of the sprint checks so it works?
Thanks in advance!

I was trying that... Found the issue though.
In order for USB Tethering to work you have to disable USB Debugging. I don't really know why my original test of WiFi tethering didn't work, but after disabling debugging that seems to work now too. Still haven't tested the BT Tether, but I have a feeling maybe that works too.
Thanks for the assistance!

Try foxfi which was posted right above your post... just tried it and it worked great for me... could be a problem with it not broadcasting in infrastructure, but in ad hoc... some cpus don't connect to ad hoc networks... foxfi should broadcast infrastructure...

No. They cannot add the fee unless you request adding the plan and agree to terms and conditions. However they can cancel you altogether for excessive data use under TOS. It is hard to prove you are using your phone as a modem without a tethering plan so they cancel you for excessive data use. Reading between the lines means don't be a data hog.

Google Edition Rom for Sprint

I know we had a few threads going before about porting the GE Rom for Sprint and the only issue we had was that 3g data didn't work, I noticed a few of them are missing either deleted or something happened, Is there a new thread I am just missing and has there been any progress on the port?

Keep giving them a daily pat on the back and letting them know we appreciate their hard work. It will get better and more stable through time.
I noticed some folks over in the VZW GS4 forums managed to port a GE rom. I attempted to flash it but it wouldn't boot. Flashed rom , kernel and su. Even tried to flash without kernel just to see if it would boot but no dice. I also noticed in the thread that the rom had working tw apps, namely watchon, which makes me feel even more impatient to get ahold of it.
Angst911 pm'd me about a sprint version. It's uploading now for him to test and day whether it works like I think it will. If he approves it, I'll post it then.
I'm kind of surprised no one had already made one for sprint.

Stuff that was in the build.prop of the verzion one however not in the t-mobile one.
"

Also after looking deeper the fact its a TW Base means we need to use CSC_SPRINT_CHAMELEON to get it working i believe..
The build.prop isn't the main reason that vzw got data.

But it was definitely a big chunk. Otherwise it wouldn't know that it was a CDMA phone and the right options wouldn't show up in Settings.
So you did some smali merges or added qmi libs, or both?

No if I had decompiled the framework and ui and did smali changes there wouldn't be the issues that it still has.
I just did a lot of copy and pasting. Ive been working on a fully functioning vzw port of ruj's blukuban(with permission) for a couple weeks. Through doing that I found how to do various work arounds to get things functioning but not perfect until you actually edit things correctly. I have everything decompiled, just a matter of digging through it.
Until I get a definitive list of everything from my project I hadn't planned on posting it...I don't want to lead people down a path that doesn't work. And I don't want to have to support those people's projects when my list doesn't work.

I also noticed in the thread that the rom had working tw apps, namely watchon, which makes me feel even more impatient to get ahold of it.

Are you on Verizon or sprint? I posted both versions now. And have confirmation that data is achievable with it.

Cool deal. Well there is one posted now that won't change your device to the i545 if you care about that.

I just tried that one on my sprint S4 and it bootloops a lot so I flashed the vzw one and a sprint touchwiz kernel and the issue is gone. Also surprisingly 3G data worked with out haven't to mess with apns but 4G is still not working.
