Are custom ROMs on this phone laggy currently? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I made the observation that custom ROMs for this phone (I have only tested CM, SlimBean unofficial and Mokee) seem to be laggy while using with the same or even less installed applications compared to my Nexus 4.
The stock ROM runs very fluid. The kernel from Wootever makes no big difference.
Anyone else experiencing this and/or know a reason for it?
Thanks

What is your definition of laggy? Why would number of installed apps matter? What is your CPU frequency at and governer? Launcher used? Widgets used?

Laggy means that I can see how the launcher has to redraw or Firefox has to reload and stuttering.
Default kernel settings or Nexus 5 recommended settings, No difference.
Nova Launcher beta. Many widgets (five screens)

Why is Mdj Cynogen 2.3 so popular despite the lag?

Even with launcher pro there is a noticeable lag switch between windows or scrolling around not found in any other nand build i tried, but only with mdj's. Is anyone else getting this weird problem?

I use launcher pro but I don't notice the lag. it's not as fast as superram or jdms but no lag.

I don't know what lag you are talking about but my phone runs flawless. I'm on 2.4 and I don't have problems at all..Define lag

I think MDJ's 2.3 so popular b'cause he's the first one (i think) who perfect 2.3..

And I believe he's still the only one with a CM7-based ROM. Haven't been that active here the past weeks though so may have missed something.
MDJ is like a household brand. Typically he is quick at releasing updates and new ideas. Generally his ROMs are also Overclocked, which makes them "faster". I have found that there tends to be more minor 'glitches' in his releases, (not to the point that they are unusable though, and most go unnoticed), mainly because he is so quick at incorporating new ideas. Generally, if you want a ROM that is 'cutting edge' you use MDJ's Roms, if you want a stock look and feel rom, you don't.

Indeed my sentiments exactly.
My experience of MDJ's CM7 rom was mainly juddery ui and juddery launcher, no matter what I used. It was like someone cut the frame rate down to like 20 fps when moving around the rom. Everything loaded fast, and games seemed to run ok, but the UI was a complete mess for me.
I've now moved to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909096 with MDJ's 10.4 OC Kernel ripped from his CM7 rom and I couldn't be happier performance wise. Of course I'm missing the CM settings, and Facebook sync doesn't work, but the UI is now a pleasure to navigate round again, and most importantly, it's as fast as his CM7 rom CPU performance wise (measured with Linpack).
I have not had any lag with MDJ 2.6 (nand) since I switched... You might have experienced conflicting app since Gingerbread is not fully supported by ALL of the existing market apps.
JDMS (SD Card version) I used was great and fast but MDJs is much smoother

Honeycomb Livewallpaper (Xaffron Productions) - Need some mass feedback.

Can anybody try this and check if it is making the home screen lag?
I have tried using it on Launcher pro Plus /ADW EX /Stock Gingerbread Launcher.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=975413
Also please mention what ROM/Launcher/kernel you are using.
So far no problems. Running it at 45fps using GingerMex FAST 1.0.1 (with Flippy's kernel) and Go Launcher EX.
Hmmm...ok let me try it on a similar Setup. From the looks of it. I think it is a CM7 related 2D driver issue.
Thanks a ton for he feedback.
Now if anyone would be kind enough to try it out on a Stock HTC Desire Z ROM / CM7 with Stock Kernel / CM6 / VIrtuos.
I wanna figure out if its just me who is facing issues. Have already tried CM7 with stock kernel and Virtuos.
What's the problem you're having with it? Bad lag?

Exactly... lag between homescreen transitions. Are you experiencing the same?
The wallpaper itself seems to be slow, i haven't noticed any massive lag or screen issues though...
overall a lil bit slow on cm7, but the main problem is the bad looking of your graphics.
Yeap...its very slow on my opinion. Not the wallpaper itself but i makes the Homescreen go slow..dont know how else to out this.
The latest version is just amazing. Fixes almost every issue.
Check it out guys.

GOLauncher running slow

Hey, I just got my international note a few days ago and I haven't been able to root it yet, but I did install GoLauncher like I had on my Optimus 2X, but after installing I noticed it was SIGNIFICANTLY slower. Especially the default lock screen that comes with GoLauncher. There's just a huge amount of lag. Has anyone else experienced this? Or know of a fix other than overclocking which I'd like to avoid?
Don't have an answer to your problem but I can say that GOLauncher works fine on my note (stock LC1). Been using it for months now with no lag.
Hope you sort your problem out though.
I tried many launchers with official and custom roms
and best of them is the original launcher TW.
I Liked go launcher on my s2 works like a charm and very good performance. I think they need to rebuild a version for note to make it perfect.
i recognized this too under GB. Best is TW ... but
under ICS GoLauncher, ADW etc. are running so smooth. The whole phone is running so smooth compared to GB.
So just wait for an official ICS rom
GB is abit slow for sure on note when i got my device it took me a while to believe this phone acts slow that much i mean (Dual Core 1.4) >?>? *** happened, mine came with kk5 anyhow changed firmware LC1 LA4 any new firmware works just fine but still you'll feel it a kinda laggy i guess so i decided to ROOT fast the second day and got me a nice tweak no OC i hate it as you XD this phone is a beast doesn't need any more pushes to fly away quick just a couple of tweaks any KERNEL would do like Franco's 10 or SpeedMod 8 and even Abyss 4.2 (BLN Support if you like) a KERNEL solves almost anything with GB

Congrats to your note. Did you install Go Locker as well?
I had installed GoLocker as well, but did uninstall it after some time of use due to lag and the phone not entering deep sleep.
Running GB stock, no root, XXLC1.

[Q] Why are the stock-based ROMs graphically smoother than CM7.2 on Defy+?

There's a constant struggle in my mind. I have tried several CM7 builds, but all of it had problems with the GUI smoothness. I just could not reach that iPhone-like smooth operation like the stock ROM or MS2Ginger, not even with V6 SuperCharger and Nitro Lag Nullifier. Various scrolling cache settings and build.prop tweaks also did not help like playing with debug.performance.tuning, video.accelerate.hw, debug.sf.hw. But MS2Ginger has several problems CM don't: SD card corruption (can't be fixed with mmcfix, tried), random FCs. So I just can't decide which is better for me: choppy GUI with no SD problems or ultrasmooth GUI with rage sometimes. It would be good to combine smoothness with SD card fix.
I'm not quite familiar with Android development yet, but I would like to know what modules/drivers/binaries etc. are responsible for this GUI smoothness/choppyness, and is there a way to port these things from stock ROM into CM.
Are you using ADWLauncher (which is the stock one in cm7)?
Try to use another launcher such as launcherpro, go launcher or adw launcher ex (not free).
I don't know why, but adw is very choppy indeed... it works well on lg p350 (cheap android device) of a friend of mine though.

How do you do actual development inside a forum post? That doesn't even seem possible.
But anyways yeah, I installed CM7 a few days ago and had the exact same issue as the OP—replacing ADWLauncher with Launcher Pro solved it.

Launcher Pro is choppy too. My first task after installing CM is always to replace ADW with Launcher Pro, but LP is still smoother on stock/MS2Ginger than on CM7.
So any tips? It's not a launcher problem, but an overall system symptom. Anyone experienced it?
i'm using adw lancher ex on cm7.2 with supercharged and it's really smooth.. like you said, iphone-like!

Do you have Defy+? What is your kernel version? What is your base SBF? What values are set in bootmenu/overclock?
Lots of performance and specially battery tweaks done in CM ROMs at the cost of better graphics. That's the case with every other brand mobile too. They all look graphically smoother on stock but a bit dull on CM.
It's hard to quantify "choppy" and "smooth," and different people will have different interpretations of the terms. Maybe a comparison video would clear things up.
Can some choppyness come from deodexing a rom? I read somewhere that odexed roms (like stock ones) are faster, but I can't remember in which way faster... maybe just booting up faster?!

I searched again and I've found it:

As you can read in the end of the post, odexed rom is snappier in general!!
I'd want to try an odexed CM7.2
That would be fast as he'll :-D

How reputable is this poster? FWIR, deodexing only affects boot times, and only after a Dalvik cache wipe—there shouldn't be any performance impact besides that.
in my case, i have a defy+ with adw ex, old v6 (update8) is very smooth. launcherpro is too. stock launcher is sucks, so i dont use it. but other launchers works fine for me.

Lag when scrolling in any launcher in stock ROM

Hi all, i experience lag when scrolling in any launcher (only except stock launcher TW4) in stock ROM or any stock based ROM. I dont see it in CM9 or AOSP based ROM.
Anyone know how to fix ? Thanks !

Same here, same everywhere. On CM9 everything run smooth. Thus its a software issue from Sammy's stock
Had the same issue. turned off system power saving and it is smooth again
I have never used power saving mode!

Maybe the launcher you use is like a memory hog.

I have tried apex, nova, go, spb 3d, tsf shell and many more. They all lag, only TW4 works fine, but i dont like TW4
This is quite a true problem, nothing to do with Power Saving mode or anything else. Launchers are laggy in the Note. The only non-stock launcher experience can be had with official CM9 as far as I've flashed (and some small exceptions here and there, by luck...)
