Image burn question - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone have image burn yet? I already have the top bar burned in my screen from lack of rotating the screen. I got my device release date and used auto brightness since.
I've had s3 s4 and n2 and haven't had an issue so quickly before
Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk 2

Launch day device here. Full brightness about 90-95% of the time. Auto for remaining. Not a single issue with image burn. 5-6hrs screen on time every day.

Yeah that's crazy. My friend uses full brightness since launch day and doesn't have an issue either. And uses it for at least 3-4 hrs a day. But maybe he rotated his screen more often or didn't leave it on as long

Haha yeah I work in an EXTREMELY WELL LIT medical device manufacturing plant. Its like being outside in the sun, which ironically, you'd think would need less brightness but just the opposite is true.

Using Nova Launcher, I turned Status Bar to transparent. Dont have to worry about a bar at the top and it just plain looks better being transparent.

Same here I'm either at school or at work at the hospital most of the time and my phone is on automatic but it's always on full brightness and I have no burn in issues.

Check out the screen burn in tool in the app store. Not a lot of downloads but good reviews after letting it run on low brightness over night.

Dell Streak Screen Brightness

So my original brightness setting was automatic and i was using it at bed one night. Decided it was too bright and brought the slider down to the minimum. The next day, I forgot all about it and used it as per normal. The brightness didnt even affect me. Before the streak, i was on the iphone 4 and when the brightness was low, its obvious.
I think the brightness could go even less before it becomes unreadable.

I made a post about this very thing not to long ago. Auto and lowest setting suck when in a pitch black room.

I agree the screen brightness is not dim enough at the lowest setting. Imagine the addition batterylife that would be saved if the streak could dim the screen even further . Maybe its a simple fix with next rom update, dell is aware of it.

If your Streak is rooted there's an app on the market called AdjBrightness that will do what you need. I think the Streak on it's own will only go to 30%, AdjBrightness lets you take it down to 5%.
My screen flicker when I reach less than 10% with adj screen brightness. Am I the only one ?

If you click on the clock icon in the menu to bring up the clock, on that main page there is an icon on the top right, looks like a sun icon half colored in. Click on that and the brightness goes way down, so i know it can be set lower. I think its a sleep mode or something

Wow, weird. Now, with that app installed, my extended control widget back light button controls the button backlights. Weird ****

I noticed this as well, also I don't think the ambient light sensor is sensitive enough or not working at all because when I set mine to auto it doesn't adjust at all.
If your not rooted, check out the app screen filter.

hmmm, this app doesnt lower the backlight levels, but rather applys a darker tint/filter. kinda defeats the idea of saving batterylife.

Well the idea for me isn't saving battery, it not getting blinded in the dark room, such as in the middle of the night when I get a text and open the WHITE screen to read it

And like the previous person, I don't use it to save battery but for when I'm using the device in a very dark area like before I go to sleep and I want to use the device.

s3 shocking outdoor visibility worst ever

i have owned every mobile device under the sun and the s3 is the worst device i have ever used outside in sunlight, im out with my dog a lot and use spotify on the go email etc etc and cant see a thing, the screen seems to take ages to reach full brightness and even then i cant see a thing other than that i love the device
Dhont go out whit Sgs 3 use only home
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
I noticed something strange, sometime I feel the outdoor legibility is good, and sometime isn't. I suspect the auto-brightness messes up, but I haven't got the chance to confirm it.
i never use auto brightness , i think its crap , just untick it and go manual
Always go for manual adjustment for brightness.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Turn off auto brightness and stick the brightness on max. Not perfect but easily readable on sunlight.

Even with full brightness, it's still a ***** to see in the sun. Oh well, good thing im inside 70% of the time.
I highly doubt you have owned every single mobile device in the world.
My SGS3 is perfectly fine in sunlight, it is one of the things I love about it because my previous phones always had problems in sunlight.

Not being funny but you live in the uk and we have sun maybe 2weeks of the year not really an issue is it
I might not have 20/20 vision, though I'm not legally blind, but putting the S3 and Nexus side by side with full brightness the latter is brighter, despite whatever GSMArena review said. I'm not very impressed with how the S3 deal with sublight compared to the S2 and Note, which is the brightest Samsung screen I've used. But its not a deal breaker either, also Samsung notification bar let you adjust brightness on the fly.

Believe it or not, Samsung marketted the S3 as a mobile device and their commercial shown people carrying the S3 outdoor. I was going to make a stereotype comment about nerds next in relation to the outdoor, but I'll stop here.

No that's Manchester rest of the UK gets more sun sometimes .
Certainly cannot see my screen at all today on standard colour scheme .

there is something like a white autobalance in screen settings, its a separate option than auto brightness. i think switching it off + max brightness give quite good outdoor experience

We have had a crap summer this year but we do usually get quite a lot of sun on and off. It's just totally unpredictable. That's why most Brit's go to the med for their holidays because if you book a holiday in the UK you could get great weather and more comfortable (less hot) than the med or it could rain the whole time.
Anyway we have had quite a lot of sun since I bought my S3 and today is glorious. I would say it's performance in sunlight is the only thing I dislike about the phone. I can't help wondering how Samsung can easily sell this phone places like the US and far East where they get a lot of sun and which I would have thought were it's main markets. Apart from that I love the phone. The main thing I use it for outside is memory-map. I can see the maps pretty good in sunlight if I turn it away from direct sunlight but struggle to read the text in it's menus.

weird brightness issue

ok, so try going to 0 percent brightness in a dark room and start like moving around the menus, or using Tapatalk.. do you notice it randomly gets more dim, or more bright, on its own correlating to how much stuff is on the screen? like, I was in the touch buttons display menu and as I moved up and down I noticed sometimes it's brighter, and sometimes it's darker. I think the dna kind of did this too but not as harshly as this.
it's not on auto brightness. I'm on 0, but i think I've noticed this at other levels as well. yeah confirmed i notice it ever so slightly on 40 percent. hard to notice since it's brighter, have to look close. easiest to see on 0.
care to give it a try and let me know?
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk 4
it seems like it gets brighter when there's more white on the screen. when there's more gray or darker colors, it gets dimmer. seems to do it consistently on Tapatalk when going from like a thread full of white background and then going back to my subscribed which is only like 3 things, so 3 little white backgrounds and the rest is gray.. so it's dimmer there.
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk 4
and when I pull the keyboard up to reply, I'm using a gray keyboard... so it gets dim bc the screen has more dark color on it.. when I drop it down, it's gone and the screen has more white so it's brighter haha
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk 4
I haven't noticed any dimness or brightness. I have noticed a flickering of sorts on my call icon and home screen wallpaper. Maybe I'm going nuts or maybe its my eyes...doesn't bother me if its happening. Interesting though.
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk 2
Maybe it has to do with that graphic ram thats on the display. They said its suppose to save battery. Honestly i thought ive seen this happening on a couple of review videos.
oh yeah? I'm wondering the same. at 0 brightness my dna would change brightness levels around and I noticed it often.. wasn't as hard of a change as the g2 though but perhaps you're correct with the gram!

It's called dynamic contrast and is present in all modern TVs and smartphones
Your TV set is probably CRT, hah?
I would think the constant change in brightness would mean sensors are constantly running and chewing up battery. But then again, I have no idea what I'm talking about

Lol u sound like me, then again i have no idea what im talking about. Yeah i was just guessing on the graphic ram. But i coulda swore on one of the vids i saw the phone was really bright and then it changed and was noticeably dimmer, let me see if i can find it, could have been auto brightness but in the same lighted area it was a huge change if it was. Do u have auto brightness on?

this. Maybe once its rooted we can find where that is defined... hopefully it is not something supper deep within the code and is something simple like a variable.

But i notice when only watching movies, and not always. weird
Here is how it is disabled on Tegra 3 devices. I'm sure there is just an easy of a way for qualcomms chip... we just have to find it after we get rooted

btw, there was a secret menu for the att version where you could turn off the dimming when the phone got hot. if we could get that menu maybe we could turn that

I'm not sure if it's the same thing as dynamic contrast, but it also sounds similar to some content-aware brightness settings included in some ROMs.
Does auto brightness even work on this phone? I will pull down the notification shade, uncheck auto brightness, put the brightness all the way down, check the auto brightness box and it does absolutely nothing. Anyone else notice this?
Upon further review, if I go to settings and display settings and check the box from there, it seems to work. Maybe it's just broken in the pulldown notification shade?

Yes I felt the same. There is absolutely no change i noticed when i set the auto brightness. I just set it to 30% manually. Not sure if there is a issue with the sensor or just the software..

[Q] Auto-Brightness Confusion

Can someone please explain how the auto-brightness works on this phone it seems to act a lot weirder than my galaxy nexus did. What does it mean when it talks about setting the baseline brightness and in what context? Do you use it? If so what brightness do you have it set to?
This phone has the worst auto-brightness of any device I've used.
I need to read the manual. I'm assuming the baseline is the minimum brightness, but it never seems to change when expected.
I chose to use a 3rd party app to manage it. Lux auto brightness works really well, and you can calibrate it any way you'd like.
Sent from my LG-D800 using Tapatalk 4
I have mine set to 40% on auto. I found the best way to decide the minimum brightness was to set it at a comfortable level in a dark environment.
To test this, set up your minimum brightness, then point the screen (ambient light sensor) at a light source, keep your eye on the screen and it'll gradually brighten. I've found mine to work pretty well and rarely have to manually override it, but the change is a lot slower than my note 2.

Get lux lite from the play store. It works great
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk 4
Comfortable in a dark room for me is about 5%, unfortunately even in the brightest of sun it seems like the phone never turns its brightness up at all when on auto like this. Anything less than 50% seems to break auto brightness for my device and that is just sad. Even when it works when set above 50%, it takes 5 seconds or so to adjust which is just terrible and the brightness seems to still act funny about how and when it decides to change. It really is the worst auto brightness ever.
Whoops!

Thanks for the recommendation guys that app seems to work sooooo much better than the stock auto brightness so far. The stock auto-brightness is garbage on this phone. Seems like the stock setting either doesn't get bright enough or doesn't get dark enough.
I don't agree, either I have a working phone or others are broke, but this is the best autobright performing phone I've every used, after the hd2, galaxy nexus, note 1 and note 2. Its perfect according to the ambient light situation and is really fast acting

Yes the G2 has a very dim brightness on 1% and also with inverted colors in accesibility click the name not the on or off button to make it dimmer grab it about the bottom middle of that screenshot and drag it down untill you match the blue color on the status bar all the way on the bottom... it keeps your colors the same but your blacks are darker makes for an even dimmer screen... have taken it to a movie theater and get no complaints its as if ts not even on
One of the brightest displays I've used no joke first time I turned the brightness up to 100 my eyes started watering no joke.
Sent from my LG-VS980 using Tapatalk
I seldom feel the need to run the brightness above 85% except outside on a sunny day. If you are an auto-brightness user, Lux is practically mandatory. LG's auto-dimming logic is horrible. It's got a, maybe, ±20% range.
