s3 shocking outdoor visibility worst ever - Galaxy S III General

i have owned every mobile device under the sun and the s3 is the worst device i have ever used outside in sunlight, im out with my dog a lot and use spotify on the go email etc etc and cant see a thing, the screen seems to take ages to reach full brightness and even then i cant see a thing other than that i love the device

Dhont go out whit Sgs 3 use only home

I noticed something strange, sometime I feel the outdoor legibility is good, and sometime isn't. I suspect the auto-brightness messes up, but I haven't got the chance to confirm it.

i never use auto brightness , i think its crap , just untick it and go manual

Always go for manual adjustment for brightness.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app

Turn off auto brightness and stick the brightness on max. Not perfect but easily readable on sunlight.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

Even with full brightness, it's still a ***** to see in the sun. Oh well, good thing im inside 70% of the time.

I highly doubt you have owned every single mobile device in the world.
My SGS3 is perfectly fine in sunlight, it is one of the things I love about it because my previous phones always had problems in sunlight.

Yeah this phone is really hard to see the screen even with a matte anti glare protector
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium

It's not the best, my iPhone 4s is much brighter but it's not that much to make me want another phone.

On cm 9 on my sgs2, they had this out door mode in the display settings that changed the hue in direct sunlight... any one know of an app that does same thing... made the phone extremely readable in direct sunlight

Mine was hideous. So I got a new screen protector (skinomi) that was NOT anti-glare. Much better now. Still not great, but much better.

Not being funny but you live in the uk and we have sun maybe 2weeks of the year not really an issue is it

I might not have 20/20 vision, though I'm not legally blind, but putting the S3 and Nexus side by side with full brightness the latter is brighter, despite whatever GSMArena review said. I'm not very impressed with how the S3 deal with sublight compared to the S2 and Note, which is the brightest Samsung screen I've used. But its not a deal breaker either, also Samsung notification bar let you adjust brightness on the fly.

Believe it or not, Samsung marketted the S3 as a mobile device and their commercial shown people carrying the S3 outdoor. I was going to make a stereotype comment about nerds next in relation to the outdoor, but I'll stop here.

With the mods available I now have no problem with my phone in sunlight...

No that's Manchester rest of the UK gets more sun sometimes .
Certainly cannot see my screen at all today on standard colour scheme .

there is something like a white autobalance in screen settings, its a separate option than auto brightness. i think switching it off + max brightness give quite good outdoor experience

We have had a crap summer this year but we do usually get quite a lot of sun on and off. It's just totally unpredictable. That's why most Brit's go to the med for their holidays because if you book a holiday in the UK you could get great weather and more comfortable (less hot) than the med or it could rain the whole time.
Anyway we have had quite a lot of sun since I bought my S3 and today is glorious. I would say it's performance in sunlight is the only thing I dislike about the phone. I can't help wondering how Samsung can easily sell this phone places like the US and far East where they get a lot of sun and which I would have thought were it's main markets. Apart from that I love the phone. The main thing I use it for outside is memory-map. I can see the maps pretty good in sunlight if I turn it away from direct sunlight but struggle to read the text in it's menus.

Yes, mine too. It is a known issue. Probably due to the autobrightness. I set my brightness to around 70%, not completely solved but not so bad now.

Yeah it's absolutly normal with Auto-brightness.
I am getting small flickering with some wallpapers when sliding from screen to screen, it's because of the high brightness and too many details like tree leafs...in movement!
Dunno if it's the same with all LCD android touch but with the N1 amoled screen it never occured

It has a few defects that for some may be very important.
To me, if I don't see a MOD soon I'll go for a Samsung galaxy sII

I think the arc is amazing It just annoys me about the flickering I can wait for devs to jump on this to male roms cause I like it like this but I dont think I will be changing phones now I got this one

Yellow Tint

So on low brightness the whites seem a bit yellow. Can anyone confirm this?

Its a common problem, at 0% brightness white is a tad yellow but still its much better than having blue/green or pink tint.I've tested lots of S3's in various stores all shows same phenomenon so getting your set swapped wont solve any purpose.

Yes its a "Bit" yellow on low brightness but on high brightness mine is pure white, its common with AMOLED they are unable to attain LCD whites. However this doesn't bother me much because I'm used to it now, keep in mind its not an tint screen is tuned bit warmer.

Well.. It even seems to be a pretty pink compared to the GS Plus. Both at full brightness.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
I think it's configured this way because blue pixels expire the quickest in amoled screens </not expert opinion>.
In either case, past phones have been able to use color controls like supercurio's app to change the tint. (And, by then you might've gotten used to it anyway.)

Does it matter which screen setting you have enabled in the Settings app or is it on all of them?

Love the note it is fantastic , I have one minor complaint the brightness is no where near as bright as the s3

Did you change the brightness in the drop down menu only?
That slider is just a fine tune for the actual setting.
Go into settings and display, and there is a REAL brightness slider there.
Note 2 is supposed to be brighter 450nit vs 350nit $3
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Interesting. Could this be due to lack of consistency in manufacturing? GSMArena said that their review unit is less bright than the one they previewed.
My device is bright enough. No problem at all under sunny conditions.
Hey guys, I think we all confused about what the real question is, i mean my NOTE 2 is bright enough too. but I think what he means is, the quality not the brightness. Honestly I have the same problem, when I compare my s3 to my note2, the s3 the color is more alive, for example, when you look at the icons in your desktop is not NEAT as the s3. When I had my s3 I faced the same problem, what i did was change my ROM but in this case, we have to wait until they release more rom for the note2.

Nexus 4 display and speaker

I usually keep my phones on full brightness. I'll deal with the battery draining because I love how it looks with full brightness. Has anyone noticed the display on the n4 kind of adjusting sometimes. I have noticed sometimes it changes to a little darker or a little brighter while using the phone.
I also noticed when I am talking on the phone with the speaker on sometimes it shuts when opening an application or sometimes even without opening an app and switches to regular ear piece. Sometimes it will stay on speaker but go lower.
Anyone having these issues? Its not a deal breaker or anything I still love it. I know phones will always have their issues, I've had ever nexus and the g1. I just want to know if other people are having this issue.

It's adaptive contrast, runs independent of your brightness settings and there's not an option to disable it. You probably notice it most when moving from a largely black screen to a white one.
I think I remember first hearing about it's use in a Galaxy S2 review, my TV does the same thing on its dynamic setting.

Image burn question

Anyone have image burn yet? I already have the top bar burned in my screen from lack of rotating the screen. I got my device release date and used auto brightness since.

Launch day device here. Full brightness about 90-95% of the time. Auto for remaining. Not a single issue with image burn. 5-6hrs screen on time every day.

Haha yeah I work in an EXTREMELY WELL LIT medical device manufacturing plant. Its like being outside in the sun, which ironically, you'd think would need less brightness but just the opposite is true.
Using Nova Launcher, I turned Status Bar to transparent. Dont have to worry about a bar at the top and it just plain looks better being transparent.
