I have two black Moto X's, model XT1058 from Rogers Canada.
Both work great but I have noticed some subtle variations between them:
-Screen color temp, one has more yellow to the whites, one has a little more blue to it.(I believe its standard to have some variance in color)
-Vibe motors - one has a stronger(but also louder) vibe motor.
-side buttons are a little bit tighter on one compared to the other, neither rattle though.
-One seems to have a better front glass coating them the other - that is the coating that resists finger prints works better on one of them.
-One has Hynix ram, the other has Elpida (perhaps the most interesting difference, could possibly be a small speed advantage with one of them)
The phones were assembled 5 days apart, both made in China.
So nothing really crazy between them but Motorola could probably tighten up tolerances just a little to give a more consistent experience.
Both are sim and bootloader unlocked.
Made in china you say?
I thought parts made in China and assembled in US.

My Moto X, which is from Fido, has an "assembled in China" writing on the back. I thought that was weird when I saw that because I thought they were made in Texas.

The one ordered through Moto maker are assembled in the us, but the black / white are in china

Only the US phones are assembled in the USA. And overall from what I have seen the China made phones are actually assembled to a higher standard.
My black one says designed and assembled in the USA on the back
The china assembled phones are only made in black and white. No motomaker outside of the US (or developer editions). All of the Moto X's sold in the US are assembled in the US, the color doesn't matter.
Anyway, this thread really wasn't about US vs China assembled phones.
I'd just like to see Motorola build the phones to even higher quality standard, regardless of where they are manufactured.
And I'd like to run some bench marking on the phones to see if one brand of ram might offer a slight speed advantage(unlikely but you never know).
I bought this phone brand new unopened off of swappa and the vibe motor feels very 'loose'. I don't know how else to describe it but I feel like every time it vibrates, it's loosening off. It just feels and sounds like it wasn't assembled the right way.
Edit: I hate nitpicking but does anyone else on the back of the Moto X have some subtle humps on the left side where the power button is? It's coming from what's inside the phone and it makes a little hump on the back.

Hynix and Elpida are both major memory manufacturers, and there's really very little difference between them. Retail graphics cards use different memory chips even though they are based off the same GPU; for 3 different GTX 660 cards you may see Samsung chips on one card, SK Hynix on another and Elpida on yet another. Unless there are memory overclocks, they all perform the same way. Given the low-power chips in a phone, this isn't something noteworthy.
However it is intriguing that they would assemble it in China. Maybe Moto is only assembling American Moto X in Texas, and making all other Moto X devices in China?

Well considering Taiwan is a republic of China, I don't really know if there will be great variances in build quality, etc. (Also, China builds a good majority of consumer electronics. Google "Foxconn")
That being said, someone in the general section has posted variances in lock buttons between versions; I'm wondering if we can correlate button quality with manufacturing point
Made in Taiwan better...
I was recently able to test out Made in China vs. Taiwan.
I had the China for two weeks (approx) before I sent it back and got a made in Taiwan model. I've been using the Taiwan model since. (I looked at these models really carefully to come up with the results below). I will note some of the issues below.
Hardware: WIN - TAIWAN
China model
-creaky back button that annoyed the hell out of me
-had to press the plastic below the button to "snap" it in
-slight 0.5mm height difference between battery cover and phone
-placement of "remove SIM before inserting battery" sticker crooked
-slight <0.5mm offset of camera lens. (very slight)
-Samsung 8gb class 2 microSD card (TAIWAN model gave me class 4 Sandisk)
Taiwan model
-small scratch (1mm) on LCD glass (can only notice at certain angles under direct light) cannot notice after applying screen protector
-everything else perfect, buttons easier to depress with no creaking
Software: WIN - TAIWAN
China model
-Quadrant score max = 1840 (TAIWAN gave me max 1974, almost 2K)
-speedtest; "felt slow", but could be all in my head.
-VERY laggy phone interface (almost had to wait 5 sec+ for contacts to switch between phone, contacts, call log, voicemail, etc)
TAIWAN model
-no issues
MAYBE it was just me, but the made in China model that I got sucked when compared to Taiwan. Of course I put these phone under a microscope to see the small difference.
If it was me, I would prefer the made in Taiwan model.
The Quadrant score diff. could have been affected by class 4 vs class 2 sd? However, I am not rooted and running stock, so I doubt it.
Of course, YMMV, so this is just my experience.
I've experienced opposite,
My phone is from China. Everything perfect. Came preinstalled 2.2.1 and everything just works.
My girlfriends phone is from Taiwan, everything about her phone annoys me and its going back for replacement asap. The lock button is mushy and doesn't click, the screen is all washed out looking, the ffc is crooked as hell. jus seems like a less quality built version from Taiwan.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
I never checked my first one, but it def had the washed out screen and winky ffc. I returned it cuz of a stuck pixel. This second unit is from Taiwan and is perfect except for one thing... the home and menu buttons creak if you hit them a certain way.
So I got a Razr i last week from Meteor Ireland. Really happy with the phone; it's size, materials used, screen, camera, software, performance, battery life etc.
However, I've only recently noticed that the Motorola insignia at the top of the front bezel seems to have some sort of manufactoring defect. Most of the letters appear to be filled in solidly with a grey sort of magnesium looking material, where as the three in the middle, t,o and r, appear to be hollowed out and black. I can put the corner of a piece of paper into these hollows whereas on the other letters they're flush with the rest of the bezel.
Anyone else have this? Annoyed that I might have to return it.

OMG! Thats hilarious!!
Believe me, when I was on my Carrier costumer service center, i thought the same, then my brain started to work and i said: Thats the earspeaker hole lol!
Greetings from Mexico!
Yeah when you really look at it the attention to detail on this phone is quite amazing. There's that speaker grille with the letter cutouts and the radial pattern etched into it. Then there's the same radial pattern etched into the bezel and power button, the buttons made of different materials to tell apart just by touch, bothering to make the kevlar pattern different to the one on the Razr M even though that's just an additional manufacturing cost, bothering to use a better camera sensor than the M, calibrating the screen so well to make the same screen used in the OG Razr look nicer... and other things I can't think of right now.
Overall all when you look at it Motorola but a lot of effort into this device!
First off let me say I love this phone, I really do but Motomaker has been leaving me a little sad.
So I started off by getting a 16gb model straight from AT&T since I'm not a patient person but after a bit I wanted 32gb so I sold the 16 and made one off contract on Motomaker.
The first Motomaker phone I got had scratches and dents on the screen bezel and it also looked like it had issues with the fusing as some of the plastic seemed to have gotten well into the screen.
I got a replacement and their advanced RMA was great and incredibly fast, however, the second one I got has a different issue. The power button on the new one doesn't seem to be seated right and sits lower than my previous two as well as being harder to press and not giving good tactile feedback..
Looks like I'm going to have to RMA again once I get the money back on my credit card.
Moto X you are amazing but something with the quality control is a bit lacking.
I had similar issues with my first phone. The power button was seated the same way you described, making it very difficult to actually use. The volume rocker was the exact opposite though, the whole button wobbled within the phone's frame, making it feel cheap. I requested a RMA saying that I wanted to swap colors, and only changed my accent color. The buttons on this phone are much more firm/usable.
I hope whatever issues there are down in Texas can get resolved soon. I really like this phone and Motorola to succeed but QA problems will give it a bad rep.
They didn't seem to care when I told them the damage I think if you bother calling they will change it.
i hope they get it right. mine came in with no issues. so they are capable of getting it right the fist time lol. i totally agree that they have issues though, my brother's veizon pre-order led is not near as flush as the one on my phone.
The Rogers ones I've seen (assembled in China) including mine are all flawless.
The one I got (no customization, Verizon) *works* fine but on the front-facing camera, I've noticed the felt ring is not seated correctly and creeping over the lens a little. Although I doubt Moto would give me an rma, it seems like a manufacturing defect.

I have a t mobile one and noticed it has a small scrape on the bottom back and a few plastic molding issues.
I am actually returning it now since I noticed there's eBay sellers selling black and white xt1058 models that are unbranded for significantly less. Made in China units but I figure I'll save $120 over an american unit and be fine with it. I'm in refarmed area so I don't care about the aws hspa and the non att xt1058 can have unlocked boot loader / no bloatware. Maybe the Chinese have better quality
At least, each time you replace a moto maker device you get a $10 play store credit (unless they fixed that loop hole) and supposedly the return process is easy and if you can float the $650 hold you can get it replaced without any down time.

QA problems? Unfortunately good chance it's because of the union workers down there. While majority are excellent, there are many with "I don't give a crap, union has my back no matter how crappy my work is" attitude.

I know what you guys mean with the manufacturing issues. My rear camera literally has a little piece of Texas in it. I noticed when I pulled it out of the box that the lens had a little speck of tan on it. However it won't wipe off, and closer inspection revealed it was on the other side of the lens!
Doesn't seem to affect the pictures at all though, so I doubt I'll get it replaced over that. But I'm sure gonna bring it up if I ever try! :fingers-crossed:

So, my display is going out...:crying: It will intermittently flash on and off for no reason. The digitizer still works, even when I can't see anything I can still feel it vibrating in my hand. This also pretty much breaks Active Notifications. :crying: And Touchless Control..:crying: And twist-to-camera...:crying:
Needless to say, I have a new one coming from Verizon tomorrow. And I definitely told them about the speck in my camera too. The lady at Verizon had the nerve to ask me if I had a memory card for my phone. I told her that unfortunately the designers at Motorola had taken that option away from me. I hope they at least send me some screen protectors or something for my trouble......because I thought I was doing a good thing supporting the workers in Texas.
UPDATE
My display went the rest of the way out last night. This resulted in a useless paperweight that vibrated occasionally. The worst part of it, is that I couldn't use Motorola Migrate to get my old info! Because the screen wouldn't come on, I couldn't see the QR code to start the wifi transfer. HOWEVER, after much anguish and profanity, I managed to get Moto Migrate to connect WITHOUT THE QR CODE!! I couldn't find this method listed in any literature, but it worked for me, and my non-displaying screen.
1) The old Moto X must have the NFC on! That is the key to this. Thankfully, I had NFC on prior to my screen breaking, so I didn't have to blindly try and toggle it on. Also turn it on for the new Moto X
2) If you're like me, and your screen won't work, then you can't see the Migrate app. Thankfully, you can just use Touchless Control to open it. "Okay, Google Now. Open Migrate" Give it 15 seconds and it should be open.
3) In my case, I had to tell my new phone to accept Migrations, and tell the old phone to send them. Settings in the top right corner, and then a toggle button in the middle of the screen. (I just used my new Moto X to judge the rough placement on my broken one, and it was easy)
4) Finally, touch the backs of the phone together, and tap the screen on the NEW Moto X to use Android Beam which pairs the phones and begins Migration of old info!
Note: I got the pairing backwards the first time, and sent settings from my new phone to my old one. This didn't appear to hurt anything, but that's why I specify you make the new Moto X the receiver.
Sorry for the HUGE update guys, but this is important information. It saved my ass, to mention an enormous headache. So I hope that anybody else trying to pair Motorola Migrate with a broken screen finds this post!! :good:
I have the Verizon version and just read in arstechnica 's review that the Verizon version is by far the worst due to cost cutting. Any thoughts on this? I havent seen the other carriers' versions yet...
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk
Due to cost cutting? What exactly did they cut?
Just found what your talking about, and it's just typical Verizon. They love to do their own thing with their version of the device. I personally like the Verizon buttons better, feel easier for me to press. Also keep in kind the Verizon version is the only one with wireless charging which could have had to do with the difference in the back.
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk
Just read their review to see what you're referring to.
First off the rear buttons being different on the Verizon phone has nothing to do with Verizon trying to cut down on costs as the review implies. Secondly, yes several things on the back of the Verizon version of the phone are visually different than the other variants, but whether or not the back of the phone looks "cheap" or "slick" is completely a matter of opinion. Personally I think the back of the Verizon G2 looks much better than the international version of the phone, which is probably exactly why Verizon changed the look in the first place (they just wanted it to be different and thought it looked more appealing this way). The slimmer metallic looking buttons paired with the shiny bezel around the camera, and the shiny rear cover with the less pronounced honey comb design just seems more appealing to me, but again this is just my opinion.
Aesthetics aside, from a functionality perspective I have had no issues using the slimmer buttons on the back of the phone. Furthermore, the reviewer explicitly and incorrectly points out that the power button on the Verizon G2 doesn't have an indicator light while the international version does. This is one of the many things that makes me wonder if the reviewer has even held and operated a Verizon G2. The other thing the reviewer pointed out, which I believe is incorrect, is the sound quality being different. Yes, the Verizon version only has one speaker grill, in comparison to two on the international / AT&T versions, but from my understanding (and correct me if I am wrong) there is still only one speaker on the bottom of the phone and the sound only comes out of one speaker grill on the international version. Regardless, I have read several reviews on this phone and there is some conflicting information out there on this topic as some reviews claim there is no noticeable difference in audio quality from the external speaker while other reviewers claim that there is a difference in audio quality between the Verizon G2 and the international version.
Lastly, I want to point out that no where did the reviewer mention that the Verizon G2 is the only version of the phone that has wireless charging. With all of these things in mind, for them to say that the Verizon version of the phone is "watered-down" and "a cheap knock off" in comparison to the other versions of the phone is complete BS. If anything the Verizon version of the phone is the best, solely because of the exclusive Qi feature. The bias against Verizon comes out strong and clear in that review (which is understandable), but I think the real underlying issue here is that for some reason people don't seem to like it when carriers modify the manufacture's original version of the phone, even in the case of the G2 when it is modified for the better (at least functionally).
Personally, I like what Verizon made with G2. There is now single drawback here. I like the color, the buttons, wireless charger etc. Actually it has unique design, that is I am not in US, so I was able to choose any 2. But I bought Verizon's. Cause I like it.

As stupid as this may sound, it looks completely possible to take the back of a Droid Maxx and put it on the chassis of the Ultra. When watching a teardown video, they're literally the exact same phone, given the wireless charging, larger battery, and non-glossy beautiful carbon back. Can't the backs just be swapped? And if anyone wanted to go to the extra step, the battery as well?
I bet it can be done. You just have to find the battery and back to do it.

Did you have any success with the conversion?
Just curious as to your success. I'm considering it myself and would like to know if this worked.
Actually you need the Maxx battery that costs like 35 bucks on ebay, a sort kind of plastic frame over the camera and stuff, then, the antenna that is located on the low side of the phone and last, the back cover, obviously is more thick to fit the Maxx battery, you can still use the nfc transmitter or you can buy the nfc/wireless charging coil combo, it uses the same connector.

When you say the "plastic frame over the camera and stuff," do you mean the Replacement Part for Motorola Droid Ultra XT1080 Camera Lens and Bezel SKU: ESMOT131219106126? I'd post a link, but XDA won't allow that for some reason.
And the antenna? Why would that need replacing?

The camera lens and bezel is more smaller on the Maxx, I think because to be fitted on the battery, and the antenna, that is on the bottom on the phone, is much thicker, I think to fit the thickness of the back cover...
