Glowlight bust - Nook Touch General

There's a huge hole in the layer that distributes the light on the front, rendering the device almost unusable. The screen is too dark to use without the light for the most part, so there's no point owning this device anymore.
Is there anything I can do? I can't really afford to replace this device and it's the only way I can read books, as I'm never able to get comfortable with a lighting source. Can I send it somewhere for repair?

You can buy glowlight e-Ink for your Nook from eBay and replace it yourself, for instance look here: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Original-6-Inch-Display-For-Nook-Simple-Touch-With-GlowLight-Screen-Replacement-/231041616939?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35cb274c2b&_uhb=1
You can also just go and buy a second hand NSTwG but depending on your luck, same thing might or might not happen. I have my NSTwG and I care for it, so far no major thing has happened to it.
Best device for reading in my opinion is Kindle Keyboard with lighted case (I know you said you don't want external light but just sayin')

As I said, I have not had Nook without Glowlight.
You can buy this lighted cover, but I don't have first hand experience with it:

Getting NSTwG is risky, many people have reported it to break within months. Mine has been ok so far!!! I'm not very careful with it though, I treat it like I treat my K3, and I have found it to be a very good reliable reader. Now, again, in my opinion, the best eReader so far is simple rock solid Kindle Keyboard. I won't trade it with newer Kindles or Nooks for reading. I got Nook just to play with Android stuff, but still K3 remains my main eReader. The combination of NSTwG + K3 has worked best for me. I carry both of them with me wherever I go, one for casual or night reading (NSTwG), the other for serious reading (K3).
It's your decision... Good luck.

Difference b/w new nook w glowlight & the one without glowlight?

Is there any difference between the new 'nook simple touch with glowlight' and 'nook simple touch without the light' in terms of specification such as faster processer, faster and better page turns etc.

I went to barnes and noble yesterday and I didn't see any difference

Just the Glowlight and a new screenprotector on the Glowlight edition.
Hmmmmmm....... I thought it had a faster processor ......guess ill buy the one w/o glowlight. How is the glowlight for those who have trued it. It must consume battery pretty fast?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium
Mine should arrive sometime this week, I'll let you know after I get it.
Apparently the light basically doubles the battery consumption - so it's a lot faster, but will still last a week or 2 of use without a charge.
glowlight doesn't consume battery if you dont use it. ;-) so during the day, I believe you won't see the diferrence. And if you are reading in the dark do you really care that you have to charge twice more often? You would have to turn some light on anyway.

The GlowLight was what finally made me give in, and buy an eInk reader. Until now, it was either a new regular LCD tablet that works well indoor/in the dark but not outside, or eInk that works outdoor/in a lit room but not in the dark, and i couldn't decide. Had an old China made 7" tablet that I used mainly as ebook reader, but the nook STG is really something completely different and better. Perfect for those bed time reads.
I traveled for 3 months with the NST. Many of the rooms I stayed in did not have good lighting for nighttime reading. I could have really used the glow light. I tried it in the BN store and it is very nice. If I stick with e-ink, I will get the glow light model for the next trip.
based on above comments about glowlight..Im reconsidering my decision to go with nook w/o glowlight.** I take care of my eyes and bad lighting is bad for eyes as we all know.** I guess I will wait some more and see.

I will second what Zilver said, I finally gave in because of the glowlight. I use it with the light for an hour or so for bedtime reading. I started to charge it up a couple of nights ago, after using it for a week, and discovered the charge was only down a bit. I'm very pleased.

Same here. I started with a Nook Color then got my hands on an HP Touchpad, put Android on it, and reverted the Nook Color to stock as a dedicated eReader. I read quite a bit outside while my kids are playing and obviously none of these are great in that type of lighting. Additionally the BRIGHT glow during bedtime reading was keeping my wife awake. The Glowlight is a perfect solution! Now I'm looking to sell the Nook Color (and the Touchpad since my wife brought home an iPad 3 for me)...
Personally i went to the BN store to look at one. I have the Nook ST already. I asked the girl about it.. She informed me that they are a waste of money. You can get the same thing with a $5 book light that clips on or if you have a cover your can get a bendy on that fits between the cover and the nook. Seeing that i have a book light already which i got on eBay shipped for $0.99 from china and the battery in it has lasted over 5 months I don't see all the hype.

Wow, sounds like an awful B&N representative! Personally, I have the Glowlight and think it is great. There is no way I'd want to have to deal with a separate booklight. YMMV.
If I had a customer who'd recently (say two months ago) bought an NST and wanted to feel better about not having a glowworm, I'd absolutely reinforce the arguments against the device - very new tech, fairly uneven lighting, less battery life, you can emulate the functionality for cheap.
I think it's a great idea and a great device. I've lent out my NST now and prefer using the glowworm - the slight decrease in contrast is livable, the nighttime and low light visibility a more than worth it tradeoff. I'm looking forward to my next camping trip and not needing a lantern or a lot of fussing for nighttime reading - for me, that was the big sell on the device.
I see your point, and certainly don't like a hard sell from a sales associate, but would have expected her to at least sound a little more positive about their new product!

Replacing my laptop with Galaxy Note

I originally purchased the Galaxy Note around 1.5 months ago on a £27 GBP per month 24-month contract from 3 (including 500 minutes, 5000 texts and unlimited data) with the purpose of it saving me the costs of two devices. So far, it has proved more than capable as serving as both a tablet and phone, but I want to try and extend that. After spending a few ill days using solely the Note, I've found I'm able to complete almost all my regular PC tasks that I would carry out on my laptop on my Note instead.
Thanks to Polaris Office, which comes pre-installed on the phone, I can even do the majority of my school homework on my device with reminders set on S Memo and S Planner. S Note helps me organise recipes for my passion for cooking, whilst Nova launcher allows me to have several slots on my dock bar coupled with a default ICS look for a tablet-like experience. The sites which I visit frequently, such as YouTube and Facebook, all have adequate enough apps and Thumb Keyboard makes typing on the Note (be it landscape or portrait) a breeze. So, fading out my laptop usage seems like the natural thing to do in my mind.
However, before I am able to do that I have a few things I need to sort out first and I have taken the liberty to write them out below with the hope that someone hear can help me with one or more of these issues I face.
Firstly, the Galaxy Note only delivers around 4/5 hours of screen time, which isn't awful but an improvement is always welcome. So, I am looking for a larger battery, but I still need to fit my phone into a case so I don't want one which increases the size of my device. Any recommendations that aren't ridiculously priced as I don't have an awful lot of money with £27 out of £40 allowance going towards this phone?
Next, I am looking for a case for my Note which both protects the back of the device and the camera, which I have heard to be prone to scratches, plus the screen. So, a flip-case seems most appropriate. I love the styling of the Zenus one found here, but it is rather expensive. So, does anyone know of some cheaper alternatives with a similar styling? I want one with a kickstand so I can view movies from my bedside cabinet or set it up to play some games using a gaming pad.
Unfortunately, as with every device, severely heavy usage does mean you have to charge at least once a day. Unfortunately, the charger which came with my phone does not reach from a mains plug to a chair in my living room or bedroom. So, could anyone recommend a longer wire approximately four metres in length for a decent price?
I also have a few questions regarding the software of the Galaxy Note. My phone suffers from the brick-bug thanks to accepting an upgrade before checking online, which was in hindsight a little foolish, and also the deep sleep bug. The brick bug should, hopefully, receive a fix from Samsung. But, if this comes in the form of an update, will it not wipe data and trigger the bug or shall this update be safe? As for the deep sleep bug, what can I do to try to trigger my phone into deep sleep? I already get around 15 hours of light use on my phone, which is still better than any other smartphone I have (admittedly just an old HTC Desire and Samsung Wave), but as I said all improvements are welcome. Any ideas?
OnLive allows you to pull of full HD gaming with the likes of Homefront available on the service to play on your mobile. I want to know how connecting the "Universal Wireless Controller" works? Is it compatible with ICS?
Finally, I am looking for some app recommendations. Open to all suggestions.
EDIT 1: I am also looking for a 32GB Micro-SD/SD card (whichever one the Galaxy Note takes) for the cheapest price available. I have heard of some 64GB cards working too, but unless they are for a reasonable price I am uninterested. Any suggestions for a cheap card for storing some media on? I am also looking for PC software to rip my DVDs to place them onto my SD card. I have loads of television show box-sets that have 20 minute long episodes just perfect for a bus trip, for example.
EDIT 2: So, upon some reading, I've heard lots of people saying how a screen protector is a must. I certainly didn't think so, but I trust the people on here to not steer me wrong. The issue I have with many screen protectors is that they add a weird texture for touching and also are absolutely a nightmare to get on. Anyone know of a screen protector which doesn't impair the comfort of touching and using the S-Pen on the screen?

Brad, you put a lot into this post. I'm not able to comment on all of it, but good luck in your pursuit of a single device.
I cannot offer an alternative to Zenus, but can attest to the quality of their cases. If you go their route, you won't be disappointed.
As far as cables, I'd suggest checking out Cables-To-Go. They have tons available online.
And lastly, there are a lot of app recommendation threads out there... but for your purpose I might suggest "Papyrus". It is a very slick note taking application with some nice features.
Good luck!
The On live universal controller works. Used it on stock gingebread. Never tried on ice cream sandwich.
I find the blackberry charger works well. Its pretty long.
I suggest you head to the market and get the longest (branded) charger you can find.
Does anyone know whether the Note requires more power to charge the Note like the iPad needs a more powerful charger and cannot use the iPhone 4's charger.
Thanks.
I have a charging doc with slot to charge an extra battery. Bought the dock with two batteries for less than $20 on Ebay. The batteries are not the quality of the original but still are serviceable. I have since ordered two OEM batteries still in the blister packs (also on Ebay cellphone dealer for $7.00 ea.) just because the price was good.
I'm never without my Note anytime I'm awake.

All i can say is dont go for the really cheap screen protectors, as you get what you pay for, But on the other hand, dont get ripped off and pay a fortune either !
Have a read through this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332004&page=27
People have reviewed their protectors so you might find one thats just right for you.
Good ones wont affect the S-Pen, But if they do, there are a few screen tuner apps on the market to adjust the sensitivity.
a protector is a must for me ! No matter how tough the gorilla glass is, Its not un-scratch able, just scratch resistant.

Thanks for such a quick reply and I am reading through that thread right now. I am looking for a screen protector which does not effect the S-Pen nor ruin the quality of the image of the screen. Anti-glare for greater outdoor visibility would also be nice. I've heard of anti-fingerprint too, which again would be nice. What screen protector are using might I ask?
theres a whole range of cases available for the Note, I personally like the wallet cases, as it saves me some room in my pocket
theres a case thread in the accessory section too, Have a look through there, It all depends what you are looking for !

What do you think about this SD card? Think it'd do the job okay?
yeah I only use a class 4 SD card also, Ive had it for ages and it does the job so i kept it.
However, the higher the class, the faster the read/write speeds are, If that isnt an issue then go for that one as its reasonably priced.
I'd avoid ebay unless you find a well known ebayer as there are a lot of scams about, People selling 32gb class 10 cards that turn out to be 8gb class 2 or something lol

Good post Brad....I've always searched for the single 'converged' device and the Note has pretty much done the trick.
Apps like Evernote especially and Springpad are great catch all apps allowing cloud storage, organization, and easy access of ALL of your data and documents...checked Em out.
Some big (work) sites tho, so just aren't displayed well on the note compared to my lap top so have to use it sometimes, and that's about the only downside.

Well, frankly, I spend most of my internet time on a small selection of sites. Facebook, YouTube and many more all have mobile apps/versions of their site.
I am looking for...
a good screen protector which doesn't ruin the screen or S-Pen
a charging cable around 4 metres in length
a case which offers protection to the camera, back and front/screen

To keep or not to keep... that's the question!

I now have both NST and NST with Glowlight. I want to just keep one of them and sell the other one. Now, as an absolute newcomer here, I'd like to know your thoughts about which one to keep is better for me for future. In terms of hacks and rooting? are all hacks that are for NST available for NST with Glowlight? Will the Glowlight screen break FOR SURE? <- so many negative comments! If it breaks I'd rather keep the simple NST!
P.S. I am a very very careful person when it comes to electronic devices I own.

How much the NST cost you? < £30? NSTG <£50 or £70? The light layer on NSTG glow is fragile. If you damage it you might as well not bother using the glow bit and it becomes another NST.
NSTG as a book reader is much more useful to me as I have to have lights quite high to make NST readable. My Glow however does stay at home, I use my phone for reading on the go.
Personally I am stocking up on NSTs. I don't believe B&N are going to be in business that much longer. Their books are more expensive than amazon who already is the market leader. They are not going to make enough money long term.
NST are the cheapest android device with exceptional battery life. I have so many uses in mind other than reading books and of for referring to Aard (One reason I did not think of other day to have large sdcard in NST).
Some examples being:
Droidmote client. Multitouch mouse for any android system that does not have touchscreen e.g. Ouya/Rikomagic sticks. Also supports Windows/linux.
Front end for home automation/Media remote.
Tailing (Displaying) my kernel messages from my linux box.
rs232 / ssh client when working on Network devices which I do a lot. Trying to get hold of a very low power rs232 adapter that hopefully NST can power directly.

Thanks for the reply Crispy.
I have never seen a product with so many negative reviews even on their own website!!! See for yourself: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/p/nook-simple-touch-with-glowlight-barnes-noble/1108046469 That's horrible!
Only thing I am worried is after the cracks, even when the glowlight is off, it wouldn't be as readable as Nook ST without Glowlight!!! ?
Well, I got it for 65$ and I'm lowering my expectation on Glowlight, maximum 2 weeks of enjoying before it breaks!
Plus, looking at how quiescent the Developer's forum has become recently, I believe you're right... Nook (if not B&N as a whole) is having a slow death, unfortunately.
P.S. I wonder if there is anything, we as customers, can do on our NSTwG that can avoid the cracks? Like any custom made hacks, tips and modifications? I was reading somewhere and many of the knick white spots are the result of the gap between actual e-Ink and the light glass, not sure if that makes sense, as I have yet to receive mine in post!!!

I dont think they are quite that fragile it would nof be cost effective to produce.
They glowlight works by light at top using natural properties of the glass to light the screen. So if u get any stress points ie pits on the glass u will get bright spots. As as u dont thump screen, twist/bend, drop keyz on it from great height then it will b fine. Buy on credit card if u wonder if y9ur seller will not honour warrenty.

Is someone looking for a rooted Nook Simple Touch Glowlight?

Hey XDA :good::laugh:
I found myself having less and less time to read and caught myself abandoning my Nook Simple Touch Glowlight lately.
My job requires me to read technical non-fiction books all day long and we got access to the PDFs. I mainly used my Nook to read epubs and news feeds, which nowadays (sadly) rarely happens.
I thought it might be a good idea to ask here, as a lot of like-minded Nook users are around. And maybe someone is looking for a solid device.
The software version is 1.2.0, model number BNRV350. It is rooted and works flawless.
It is in super mint condition, as I treat my technology very well.
I've got all the accessories, booklets and the original packaging.
Just shoot me a direct message or ask in this thread.
I guess we'll figure out the cheapest way for shipment and come to an agreement regarding the price.
I hope I can find my Nook a good new home
Cheers
With what rooting package is this device rooted?
Is this device equipped with Google apps?
What is the physical condition of this device?
I rooted it over a year ago...I think I used touchnooter.
Is there a way to quickly check?
Yes Goole apps worked fine...I actually used it for my calendar an gmail from time to time.
And had Evernote, Dropbox, Dropsync and Read it Later installed, along with a bunch of reader apps (especially the Kindle app).
The condition is mint, no wear worth mentioning.
I don't think there is, but that's alright.
Just to make sure, the screen is 100% intact, right? Because a lot of Glows have had screen problems.

What's exactly the issue?
I haven't noticed anything, so I guess it's fine.
I managed to find some old photos I took during the rooting process (I think I already knew that I would forget :angel.
I used "GabrialDestruir's Touch and Glow Nooter CWM", hence CWM 5.0.2.7 is running.
The known issue that is specific to NSTwG is "screen tear". It is light leakage through scratches or torn gaps in light dispersing layer. It looks like this: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-rCLwlgMFtfY/U-dJe53T9zI/AAAAAAAAFcc/GKvfiL2P_lk/s800/IMGP9221.JPG or http://the-digital-reader.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/broken-nooklit-2-500x500.jpg . In most cases it is almost invisible with light turned off, but some devices I've seen had very annoying cracks, that made reading unpleasant. This is how affected device looks like with glowlight off and on - link to the gallery: https://picasaweb.google.com/110611895739392246996/NookSTGlowlight?authkey=Gv1sRgCK-H4-ua55mcKg# .

Thank you so much :good:
Those illuminated eInk readers all use a diffusion layer on top of the actual screen. Those teared spots look a lot like they collapsed under punctual pressure, for example when carrying the device in a bag carelessly.
My device is fine
Yes, the idea is common, but it seems that in NSTwG B&N have used material more susceptible to damage than its competitors.
That kind of damage may have a few different causes. You can choose between scratching, pressing or bending the device. That last option will cause serious, long cracks and/or slight wrinkles. It looks like this (and that's the one annoying example I mentioned in the previous post): https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-FXi1QOXgdX0/U-n-Jgsti-I/AAAAAAAAFd0/Qz_Tg8wDPU0/s900/IMG_0765.JPG and https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-jRdMBOMTBNc/U-n-Jk4CARI/AAAAAAAAFd4/hRfIayia6NU/s900/IMG_0766.JPG . This is my backup one, and one day I may downgrade it to Nook Simple Touch without Glowlight by removing the dispersion layer. It is possible, and I accidentally did it a bit already in another unit when I tried to separate the bezel from the screen assembly.
Okay, I guess the Nook has to stay in my house, as the girlfriend recently discovered Pocket.
I didn't know...she might ditch her kindle paperwhite in favor for my nook.
She caught me fiddling around with it again and now can't let go of it.
I didn't even know she was using Pocket...and by far not that she had collected slightly over 1000 articles there. (Holy cow!)

reviews? buy\not to buy?

From the recent posts I see there are multiple serious issues such as not getting sms and not being able to install apps through google play, no 3.5mm(?!). But, as these are solvable.. overall - is this phone worth buying? Is the e-ink display usable and compensates for the issuses?

it's still early days for me with this phone. so, take my comment with a grain of salt. so far, it's not like the yota 2 (which i loved). i have not yet figured out how to get the e-ink screen to be its own self. it just appears to be there so one can mirror content over from the lcd. the other thing is that bc it is now a flat e-ink, you can screen protect it, but this takes away from the e-reader feel a little bit. i have read comments that the hisense a2 suffers from this. i recently ordered the a2 pro (so i will know soon enough).
one of the areas i like this phone for is that i don't have to carry around my other e-readers. if i am out and about, i can just flip over to the ereader and read. so you don't have to plan to take your ereader with you wherever you go. i am using this as a secondary phone. hope to have more of a solid review in the future.
