I thought that with KitKat, you'll be able to say "Hey Google!" to activate the voice search. I can't seem to find a setting to enable it. Is this a Nexus 5 only feature?
Need gel launcher and only on home screen and it's ok Google

Have you ever looked at an Android blog? If you pick one, any one of them, you can pretty easily see where the "OK Google" comes from and how to get it running on your phone. Its the Google Experience Launcher, not Android 4.4.
I'm running it on my 4.3 phone right now.

Hmm, I have heard that one before. Remember when Google Now first came out? There will all sorts of rumors that it could only run on certain phones and so forth. Do we have any evidence to point otherwise in this case?

Given that the MotoX is stock Android with the exception of this feature, I might just get one. I have had the N4 since October (November?) when it first came out.....
Can some1 post it for Nexus 4 ?!
Motorola has made the app available for droids and moto x on Play store ::
See " Touchless Control " on play store ..
or here is the link ... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.motorola.audiomonitor
Can some1 port it for our lovely nexus 4 ?!?!
Yes please. That would be epic. The only thing I like about Moto X
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.RSen.OpenMic
This is probably the closest we have to Touchless Controls as of now.
As a proud Nexus 4 owner, running the Nexus 5's Google Experience Launcher, and unrooted, I can categorically declare that the Nexus 5's touchless control with the always on "ok google" hotword detection works flawlessly on the Nexus 4.
You need to make sure you have the GEL apk file installed, and the latest play store update of Google Search.
You need to make sure your voice search settings are set to US English (just like on the N5).
Admittedly, if you, like me, installed the packages from the N5 system dump, you would have found that the hotword worked, but the search would crash.
However that seems to be fixed and working perfectly in the latest Play Store Google Search update, which incorporates the GEL in its code.
So you just need those three requirements I've listed above, and the touchless control ought to work perfectly on the Nexus 4.
Well, it is on mine... I've just started using it today, and it has not crashed on me yet! Although, it remains to be seen what a drain on battery it may be...

I see, my bad, I've seen similar things posted about the N5 as well... People saying the N5's version of touchless control being hardware dependent, and not available on the N4.
Just got over excited about getting it to work on my N4, hah!

Some MotoX feature is still possible. If you used the latest AOKP nightly (for 4.3) they developed their own ActiveDisplay feature.
I read somewhere that the G2 was one of a few phones, aside from the Moto X and the other new Droids, that has the necessary hardware to support the software Motorola uses for the Touchless Controls, the whole "Okay Google Now" thing. Has anyone tried to port this software over to the G2 yet? I bought my mother the Moto X, and have to admit the feature is pretty cool. I would do it myself, except the fact that I don't have a clue how!! So, whose butt do I have to kiss to get this thing to work on the G2? Thanks!!!!
I dunno I kinda felt silly using the Voice Mate and saying Hello Genie.

Yeah, I don't see using the feature all that much in public. But while I'm in my car or at home, would be nice. I do find "Okay Google Now" to be a tongue twister somehow. Try it.

Yea it comes in handy I mean I've used Google Now with voice searching and dictated some texts while driving so yea it would be nice feature but those times are rare since I usually just have music going in car and rarely text or take calls when driving. Still I guess if my phone was always listening for my commands it could be cool to sit it up on a table near me while I'm doing whatever and tell it what to do.
Hello!
A friend of mine, and i, each have a 16GB WiFi Nexus 7 2013.
While the screen is OFF (Nexus sleeping), my friend's nexus can be woken up by saying "Ok Google".
Mine ONLY works if my nexus has the screen on already (I dont have lock screen enabled).
His is completely bone stock and recently updated OTA with Kit Kat 4.4 KRT16S already.
I have TWRP recovery, and had 4.3 Stock Root.
NOW, i kept the custom recovery, but i flashed Stock Kit Kat 4.4 KRT16S NO ROOT.
and jealous (and lazy).. and i want my nexus to operate just like my friends... so either somethings wrong or maybe lemme know what i gotta flash. Thank you for your time.
Weird that your friends can wake even when the screen is not on... Never heard of that ( unless you have another app.)
What's launcher does your friend have installed? And make sure he does not have any other apps that enable him to do this. Check out "open mic+"

He is using the stock launcher that came with Kit Kat.
I couldn't even get it to work on the stock launcher, so i decided to look for and install the Google Launcher. I even tried reinstalling Google Now. I have looked at Open Mic+ in the past when i had a custom ROM, but i rather have the real thing from Google.

Well the real thing from the moto x (always listening) would require source code to be merged to work.

If he is using the stock launcher that came with the nexus 7 and 4.4, he should not even be able to wake the device from thee home screen, much less a locked device... Only from Google now.
Only the moto x (and other Motorola phones with the special chip) should be able to wake from locked device. Not even nexus 5 can do that... Don't know what's up with your friends tablet

Yup, that's the point, it won't sleep anymore. Anyway, just saying, to each his own.
not sure if this has been discussed yet (could not find much in net either) but some say that the ok google voice commands is not available on the htc one m8. i got mine yesterday through telstra (australia) and have everything stock. today by pure accident i discovered that if you hold the home button down an option to swipe up to google appears. also when in lock screen there is a arrow below the lock symbol that does the same thing. it doesnt seem to be always active like other phones but at least it is there and it works.
ps. absolutely love this phone. upgraded from htc one xl (australian 4g one x) and have to say what a massively huge improvement.
You need to say "ok google" from within Google Search/Now then it works, but that also depends on your local language.
The chipset is very capable of running in a low power mode and waking to voice commands "alright m8" would be awesome, but HTC have chosen not to add it or not add it yet.
There doesn't seem to be stock way of customising the swipe up to get to Google now as there was with the One but HTC are very open to feature suggestions!

So I take it the search widget doesn't work like the Nexus 5 homescreen? The S5 does...
Maybe, I did see someone demonstrate it very quickly but its not a widget I use and did feel inconsistant!
It won't wake up the device as we see on the Moto X at least.
Theres an app called open mic in the app store that lets you wake up pretty much any phone on jb+ via voice command to google search ill text people by talking to my pocket if i put the sensitivity to max but it wakes up to alot no matter what your wakeup phrase is "you can change it.".
You'll be able to activate it from your homescreen if you were to install the GEL launcher. If, however, you wish to keep Sense then you'll either need to do without it or use one of the apps like Open Mic (mentioned above) to do so

Widgets are still avaliable.
What is different is with the M7 with physical buttons, you could swipe up from the home button, or long press depending on your settings.
With the M8 with virtual buttons you just swipe up from the home button just like you do on the nexus devices.
Basically the buttons and google now behave like they do on a nexus.
It's works great haha, I was wondering what can google now do, now it's useful:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:
I found this by accident too. I was happy about it.
You can also install the google now launcher if you want it to always be active. The search widget doesn't listen unless yo tap the mike icon.
So how can the S5 have hotword detection active on the touchwiz launcher ? Can that functionality be brought to Sense?

It's up to the OEM to include that. Samsung decided to make that part of the SOC active for listening while HTC did not, probably out of battery concerns.
