Virus Detected - Nexus 7 (2013) General

Okay, so I decided to take my Nexus 7 back to stock before I upgraded to 4.4 so I erased everything, formatted, returned to stock 4.3 and the I updated and rooted with SuperSU while keeping stock recovery. I honestly haven't touched my Nexus since then because I been inundated with work. Today I pick it up and browse to xda on chrome to download some files and while going through the forum I get a pop up (one of those old school ie pop ups) that says "Android virus detected on device, scan now."
Now granted, I haven't yet installed any ad-blocking services but I can't even remember the last time I got a bogus pop up like on my computer let alone on a mobile device, and never on xda. WTH? Not gonna lie, kind of freaked me out. Anyone else experience this?

Okay seriously now I'm actually worried. I just decided to reset the device and now I'm stuck in the start up. I get to the WiFi selection page. I click my WiFi enter my password and it connects BUT there's no way to move forward. There is no next button. The only thing on the bottom of the screen is the back nav key. I've turned off and restarted the device twice and no luck. First I get apps and Google services stopping all over the place and now the start up wizard is acting out. I don't want to re-flash 4.4 all over just yet. Any one experience this before?

Don't feel bad, you should of seen on my Nexus 7 2013. I was browsing this forum and I would get a full screen of naked women, like a pop up. It has happened a few times. I had to make sure I didn't use this forum around kids or my wife. Not a joke at all.

Had the same problem to. Not only pop ups in Chrome, but random playstore pop ups for adult apps. Factory reset solved it.

Crazy, never had these kind of pop ups before. Did you ever have them before updating to 4.4?
The problem with resetting is I keep getting stuck on the freaking wifi page. It connects but instead of moving to next page after I click connect, it just connects and remains on the same page. I try clicking forget and re-entering the pw but nothing works. I've even tried resetting and clearing cache from recovery and I still keep getting stuck on this damn page. Frustrating. I guess I really am going to need to re-flash the update.

I was on 4.3 at the time. Completely stock. I went into settings, backup and reset, and chose factory data reset.

Do you have access to any other Wi-Fi network (like a Tethered connection from your phone)? Can you try connecting to it and see if you are able to move forward?

I'm getting the pop up asking to scan but I cancel it and it goes away. That's been my only issue.

I just re-flashed the update. The setup worked fine afterwards. I have no idea what the problem was but as much as I am enjoying this update, the bugs and glitches I've been experiencing are beyond frustrating. Google search, Youtube, Play store...keep crashing. ::deep sigh::

Yeah, this is beginning to get on my nerves. Resetting has made *no* difference for me. In fact, I just re-flashed the whole freaking update and first webpage I open up in Chrome, pop ups, switch to dolphin, pop ups, firefox, pop ups. It's happening on two devices and one isn't even rooted. Are your pop ups from ib.adnxs.com as well? Because that's where all my "virus" pop ups are from. I would say it's malware but I haven't even the slightest idea where it might have came from. As of right now the only apps on my devices apart from the pre-installed ones are Greenify, Solid Explorer, Quickpic, Stickmount, SuperSU, Dropbox and ZArchiver. Never had malware with any of these apps so I don't even know where this ib.adnxs is generating from and it's annoying the ever living **** out of me.
I don't know if I should suspect the GEL or the Google Search update, because really I can't think of where else this is coming from.

1. Where did you get the "stock" image?
2. Where did you get the update OTA?
I only ask because yesterday I DL'd a "stock" image for another device from Sammobile & I found that it had some host file changes. The odd thing was that for the first time I can remember, my corporate security client wouldn't let me DL it as it detected a risk, so I dl'd to an isolated secure drive & tore into it, hence finding the modified hosts.

So I did a brief search on ib.adnxs and a bunch of links came up talking about malware affecting browsers. Mostly pop ups happening everytime you open a web page or a new tab.
http://malwaretips.com/blogs/nym1-ib-adnxs-com-virus/
Check this out. If you google on "ib.adnxs android", there is a link that talks about android browsers been affected by it too.
Hope it helps.

Probably malware infected ad server and has nothing to do with the image as long as you got it from a legit source. You can reduce your risk by using something like OpenDNS servers.

Sorry for the late reply. Yeah, I looked it up as well but man it's still frustrating. I Know it' not the OTA or the GEL/Google Search because I got them from a legit source (AP), I was just venting. I don't even know if it is the servers, no one else in the household is experiencing it, hell even my note 2 doesn't have the problem. I'll try using OpenDNS to see if it makes any difference.

I tried running Avast and MalwareBytes and nothing comes up, but I'm still getting the same pop ups, both "virus detected, scan now" and almost full page pop up ads that I can never close. Seriously, trying to close the ads just takes me to a new page, backing out is the only thing that works for some of them. I'm stumped. SuperSU is updated so no worries there. I even went back and locked my bootloader but I don't think that has anything to do with it since the second tablet isn't even unlocked. I'm beyond frustrated, I almost threw my Nexus on the hardwood. I'm going to try flashing the factory images straight from Google. Don't expect it to change anything but...I'm using my note 2 in the mean time.
I'm the only person in the household with android tablets (the phones seems to be fine oddly enough but then again none of them are updated to kitkat). My friend has a Nexus 5 so I'm going to get her over here on my wifi to see if the pop ups show up in her browsers. Maybe this thing has been on the servers all along and there's a vulnerability in kitkat that's allowing it through? I don't know.

Sprint Hero Troubleshooting

OK, I'm at work and as I'm the Android expert, I pretty much deal with Heros and Moments all day. 7 days a week. So I've compiled a short list of problems that I was wondering if you guys might be able to help me out with. I kinda feel bad constantly having to hard reset my customers Heros, even though everything is backed up to google. So, since you guys have delved into the OS and programming, perhaps you have some fixes aside from hard reset (And that won't void the warranty, preferably) for these problems.
1. Picture mail. Customer just gets a download button. When they touch it, either they get downloading........ or download unsuccessful. After suspending/restoring account, deprogramminga nd reprogramming the phone, and switching the phone off the account and back on, I can get about 50% of their picmail to go through, still have to hard reset. Any thoughts on causes of this? Or a fix?
2. Youtube. Using either the browser or the youtube application, the video will not play. Will occasionally play after 4 or 5 tries, but with no consistency. Doesn't seem to happen on every phone. Hard reset does not fix this. It's listed in our known issues, with no fix. I would appreciate any of your advice. I already give my customer the workaround to use a diff browser and d/l in mp4 format, i'd like to know if I can be more help.
3. When attempting to sign into google or access Market, error "A reliable data connection could not be established. Your SIM card may not be provisioned for data. This may be a temporary problem." Etc. Once again, I do all troubleshooting on our side, customer can browse internet and use data based apps, just not contact googles servers. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.
That is pretty much it. The only problem I actually cannot fix is the Youtube, other than that a hard reset will take care of it but your average sprint customer has never done a backup and has forgotten the gmail they created when they activated the phone. Thanks in advance for help and if anyone needs any help on my side or info hit me up.
Tell Sprint to get off their ass and roll out the 2.1 update. That fixes every issue you listed as well as others.
Be thankful that some very malicious exploits are still being kept hush hush. Your bosses promised fixes in November when they were shown how to crash any Sprint Android device to the point where a hard reset and a trip to the store is needed to fix it.
Fixes were promised "soon" back in November. It's almost March and I'm about to spill my guts and make things much worse.
I'll help anyone who is honest. Sprint and HTC have spent a ****load of resources on other projects instead of fixing a buggy POS system they took my 500 bucks for. That's not honest.

+1 what he said
Both posts don't actually address his questions, rather your gripes with Sprint and or HTC. Please stay on topic and help if you can.
Gee, that was entirely unhelpful. I am actually trying to help people. I come in on all my off days because no one else here is as comfortable with Android as I am. I am also the top Aircard guy because while most of these guys can fix your Blackberry, they don't know jack about Windows or Mac. So I spend the daylight hours every day trying to help people. I figured since you guys have gotten further into the OS than I ahve you might be able to offer some assistance to your fellow Hero users. Instead, I get an extremely rude message essentially spitting in my face and telling me to piss off because of the company I work for. I honestly had much higher expectations. I've been reading these forums for months and have come to have a high degree of respect for all of you, which is why I decided to start posting. That's really dissapointing. And, for the record, Sprint doesn't write Operating Systems. They just tell the manufacturer what they want (Sprint Nav, Nascar, etc.) and what they wont allow (phone as modem, bluetooth file transfer) and then get the updates whenever they make one. You guys are eagerly awaiting a Sprint 2.1? So is Sprint. I promise you.
And by the way, I realize I'm apparently a horrible person for working to feed my family and all, but I'm an Industrial Electrician, Journeyman. Also A control specialist, fiber optic terminator, and IT tech. The economy crashed, I got laid off from the electrical union cause we had no work, sat on the books for 6 months, and when the union couldnt find me work I came here. Sprint was impressed with my technical abilities (and the fact that someone with my experience/education would be willing to do tech support) and gave me a job. Don't think I'm some evil corporate asshole whos trying to get over on you, cause I'm not. If you don't want to offer your assistance that I think I very respectfully asked for, ok. You aren't hurting me, my Hero works just fine. You're just hurting every other Hero user that calls in needing help.
Oh, and since I can't play with my phone at work (new policy, it bloody sucks, I used to sit here and flash roms and stuff all day from this site) I am just reading the forums and trying to help out. This thread is aptly named for it, so if anyone needs any tech help (as far as not getting sms, mms, calls not coming through, internet down, etc) hit me up in here I'm already giving out tech advice in the picture mail thread. Lol.
How about the texts out of order problem?
I've noticed on mine, it's only when I get texts from other sprint users and it's not every time. Like just now, I sent a text to a friend with sprint, my phone says I sent it at 5:40pm, she replied 2 minutes later, but the time stamp on her text says 5:39pm. I have yet to have this issue with people on other carriers, only people that also use sprint.
Yeah, thats a weird issue. Mine does the same thing. I havent found a fix yet. When using the normal messaging app this causes new txt messages to go to the top of the thread, which is a pain in the ass if you have several hundred txts. Using Handcent keeps that from happening, but the time still comes in wrong. I'm gonna check this out today and see if I can dig something up.

Not true. His questions were answered in the first sentence of my original reply.
All these issues are a direct result of the process that was used to force Android to work with hardware and a system it was not designed for. They are all fixed in later versions of the operating system.
To the OP - I don't hold you responsible for anything Sprint does. But since you identified yourself as someone who does tech support for them, I simply told you the same thing I tell any Sprint employee. Fix your **** and soon. Pass that along please.
Too bad Sprint network and software engineers don't care about the issues enough to seek feedback like you have done. If they did, I would have told them the same thing.

Is the customer using the stock messaging app or Handcent? I notice that if I click the "download" button on the pop-up notification then I never get the picture mail. Close the pop-up notification and open the SMS app of your choice (stock, handcent or other) and the picture mail should be there.
I would think that a hard reset fixes it because it uninstalls the custom messaging app that the customer has installed that is hijacking the download.

I've noticed that many movies don't play on the browser because Youtube tries to launch "Youtube Mobile" and it blocks a lot of videos that would otherwise play in the Youtube app.
It may be an issue with the data connection. Does your store have a WiFi hotspot? If so, try disabling the Sprint Data connection and enable (and associate) the WiFi... then see if it views ok. If so, you may need to reprovision the Vision account or reset the Vision credentials.

I suspect the customer has loaded a custom ROM and is not telling you... but before they came into the store, they restored from nand. There is a known issue with some custom ROMs that will put bad data in your Google account (held on Google's servers). Try creating a new gmail account, do a hard reset, configure the new gmail account as the phone's primary Google account, and see if the market runs. If so... explain to the customer that they have (i believe permanently) screwed up their Google account and they should create a new one. They can still use their old gmail account for mail as a secondary account but as far as Market and all the other Google apps on the phone, they should use the new one. Also advise them to check with the ROM manufacturer before they load custom ROMs.
For example, MoDaCo doesn't have this problem but some of the earlier (and possibly the current) Fresh ROMs caused this problem.

Is there really such a serious exploit? Maybe its time Engadget and the other big guys in the tech press know about it and its specifics. Could be one hell of a bargaining chip to force an early release of 2.1

This doesn't seem to be totally accurate since in my case I've been using Fresh roms since the first release and have never had any market related issues. To me this would imply there's a bit more going with that. Just thought that this should be noted.

Again??? this is your first post in this thread... and if you have to start out by saying that you're not trying to be a jerk, then you probably are. It's kinda like saying "all due respect" when you have no intention of showing respect.
If you search this forum you'll find the evidence to my statements. I've been using MoDaCo's ROM and have seen numerous people that switched from Fresh and can't get the the market to work. I'm not any way devaluing the Fresh ROM or their work. I'm simply saying that there was a setting in a file (I can't remember what file exactly - you'd have to search that answer out yourself) that messed up the market for a bunch of people. This may have been an isolated issue to one version of Fresh (hence when I said "some"). If you weren't affected then you're a lucky one, but that doesn't mean that other people aren't affected. Also, my thread was informational to show that this guy's customers may have loaded a custom ROM... The ROM could have been from Fresh or anybody else (or even customized by his customers themselves).

I have had this issue with two Heros with and without third party msg apps. Also the first thing I do in setting up my msg apps is to disable the popup notificacion (just bugs me) and I have had the same thing happen. In fact I've had my msg app (whether it be stock, CHOMP, or Handcent) open and waiting for test mms msgs I sent to myself and still experienced the same problem. Lol. Thought I edited the post. To early in the morning I guess. My point was simply that what you stated isnt necessarily true in all cases, specifically mine. And so to me this would be evidence the rom is not the issue and that there may be more to it. Thats all I was saying. Didnt mean to offend.
The only time i have heard that a Fresh ROM messed up the market was Fresh 2.1. Its just an AOSP rom and it was known for messing up the market but a fix was posted.
I just lost a lot of respect for you gbhil. What are you going to do next? Threaten the class president to try and get Obama to sign a bill?
LOL. Yeah, I'm really just gonna call up the CEO and the development department...everyone in tech support has their number....
Oh, and in response to the latest posts.....Aside from the youtube issue, a hard reset takes care of all the issue I listed. I thought I mentioned that. So that rules out the phone being permanently screwed up by bad roms. Plus, I assure you, the people that call in with these issues don't even know how to get into the phones settings, and it takes them about 10 minutes to type their google username and password. And the "cannot establish a reliable data connection" issue with google and android market isnt just the market. It happens when they try to sign into Google, sometimes when they just bought the phone and are doing it during the activation process. It also happens on the Samsung moment, so I think its safe to say it isn't a rom flashing issue. And the picmail happened on my hero before I even rooted it, and occurs on the stock app and handcent. When they call in with it happenning on stock messaging app, I have them download handcent as part of troubleshooting. As I said, after all troubleshooting is done, they maybe get half their MMS.

Do you actually work for Sprint? or are you reselling their services?
Sprint recommends that you do not even TRY to use data until 4 hours after activating the phone. It takes some time for the account to properly provision through all their systems and if you attempt to use data before the account has provisioned completely then it screws up the vision profile to the point where you MUST call Sprint and have them fix it (i.e. nothing you can do to fix it).
I ask if you work for Sprint because if you do, you'd know that and wouldn't have people trying to connect to Google right away.
Now, I know that people are going to say that this is part of the setup process for the Hero (enter your account information), and that they did it out of the box with no problem, and the Sprint reps set the phone up for them in the store, and Best Buy will set the phone up for you and they don't have problems, and a whole bunch of "it didn't cause problems for me"... but that doesn't change the fact that Sprint says quite clearly "do not try to use the vision data until 4 hours after activating the account".
So... if you're having data problems, and you don't want to use my suggestion from before to reset the Vision Profile, then call Sprint and have them do their magic little fix.

pop up spam alerts? on android device?

help, can some one help me give me some info.
ive posted about this on the official nexus one forums, but it is not directly related to the n1, its more of an android thing. here is the link.
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/android/thread?fid=045ddfb6b42270460004806c59d11f9d&hl=en
if any1 has any input please respond in the nexus forum or here.. thanks.
google owns admob. you're going to get ads in almost any app you open up. only way to get rid of them, as far as i know, is to root your phone and install an adblocker. you need root privleges for that to work.
Weird, I've never had anything like that on any of my Android phones. Definitely would be annoying though. The text message spam isn't as weird as it popping up under the official OS, this doesn't sound admob related to me though.
nopes
this is not admob related.. its not diff advertising.. its the same company, advertising local nyc party events. but its the same company party promoter.
and also the text and pop ups are two separate incidents. i dont get the sms and than after the alert.. they come and diff times.
ive done the master reset on the g1 numerous times.. deleted all the apps i dled etc.. i kinda just fig it was a lost cause.. than i got it on the nexus 1, the first day i got it.. didnt even install anything on it. so i figured maybe id research around..
you don't need to DL anything. stock apps will have ads too. blame google for that. my nexus was throwing up ads before i ever put anything on it. not on home, not in phone, but as soon as anything else was opened, ads.

[Q] Samsung Diagnosis App [Solved]

Hello,
I'm receiving an app update through WP7 Marketplace to get an update for Samsung Diagnosis.
However, when I go to get the update from the Marketplace, it gives me the following message:
"Can't get this info right now. Check back in a little while."
Anyone know why this is happening? Has anyone gotten this error yet?

Yep, same here. I also have a constant pending update for some Reversi program that's not actually on my phone because there's two in the marketplace with the same name. My guess in both instances is that Microsoft is still trying to get it right at their end since there's nothing I can do about either at my end. I'm not resetting my phone over this so I just ignore them.

Most likely. I agree that I will not be resetting my phone over this. How are you liking your Focus so far? Any issues?

I like it a lot and, after the usually painful transition, I haven't missed the iPhone 4 at all. I think this marketplace thing is probably the worse issue I've seen, which isn't bad, and it hasn't restarted by itself or anything since I bought it. In fact, I even have a Sandisk class 2 8GB card in it and it's worked without a hitch since taking it out of the box. I have about a week to return it but so far I've had no reason to do so.

Same here. My experiences have been the same as yours. But instead of going from iPhone 4, I went from iPhone 3GS. The only downside is there aren't must options when it comes to cases and such, but that's to be expected for a platform that hasn't taken off yet. The only problem I am having so far is getting used to the keyboard. Since it's weirder then the iPhone 4, I'm used to pressing the letters closer together and on the WP7, I tend to make more mistakes, but that's something I'll get used to.
uninstall the app
Uninstall the app then go back into diagnosis and it goes away

LOL...guess that explains why it doesn't download. That's...let's see....8 times the monthly cap imposed by Comcast reidential. Good job, Microsoft!
Oh...I forgot to mention, that's one of three updates stuck in the marketplace for me now. It was Diagnosis and a Reversi app and now there's another Reversi app. This one actually downloaded and installed, then it never showed up in the list of installed apps and it shows up in the marketplace list every other time I start the app. "I assume Microsoft knows...." is starting to sound like a bad assumption. Guess I should call their teacher and ask that she keep them after class for their own good.

I was having the same issue until I realized I could slide my finger over the keyboard and release when the key I wanted was highlighted.
Did you know you can also hold your finger down for a moment, and you get a cursor, which you can then slide around to insert whereever you want, like the middle of a word. Makes editing easier.

I have been looking for that since 11/18. Knew it had to be there, but don't remember seeing it in the instructions...
.......aw, who am I kidding? I didn't read the instructions.
Awesome tip Man, Thanks!!!
I had used the ##634# to get into the Diagnosis menu. It now shows up as an App in my start menu. If I "Uninstall" it, will I lose access to it in the future? Will uninstalling it delete the application itself, or just the Start Menu Shortcut?
Is there another way to remove this shortcut without uninstalling?
Just removes shortcut

Uninstall just removes the icon, typing the code on the dial pad again brings the app/icon back.
Just tested on my own focus to confirm.

SecurePhone app mysteriously appeared

Hey everyone. Have an unrooted Evo. Just installed the most recent OTA. A few days before that my wifi started turning on by itself. After doing some snooping around in my phone I found an app called securephone running. It looks like spyware, I'm not sure how it got there, or what app I downloaded that added it, but keep an eye out, and if anyone has any info I'd appreciate it.
Looks like it logs and uploads your call history. Got a nosey girlfriend?
http://www.appbrain.com/app/securephone/security.Phone
I was thinking that but it has no user interface, instructions or settings. After uninstalling I even went and reinstalled it myself from the market to see, but nothing.
Yeah I don't know then, maybe there is some hidden way to get into its menus, it certainly wouldn't be the first app like that. It does have the most extensive permissions list that I have ever seen so methinks it can't be good. Just get it back off your phone and keep a close watch on whoever has access to your EVO.
I found one listing that says "This application seems to be removed from the Android Market". ?

What apps are opening and typing? What are they saying?
In theory a factory reset should wipe it off your device, assuming its not some app thats been installed to the system partition. If you unlocked your bootloader, installed twrp (a recovery for the n7) then wiped everything and then installed a custom rom it would remove everything and re-install fresh and do the trick. Then you could flash back your stock rom and recovery ect and be back to normal

Sounds like a defective (or possibly a dirty) touch screen issue to me.
What happens when you disconnect from Wifi? Do you continue to get similar problem?
Rgrds,
Ged.
Ged,
I don't think is dirt problem, cuz it looks like someone intentionally remote control my N7
I try to disconnect wifi, and it back to normal but sometimes it happens again
sometime when i play candy crush it moves by itself
thanks

No one is controlling your n7 remotely. They would need an app for that on your n7....if there is even such a thing.
Its a screen problem. Definitely.
Warranty it.

Once again, it is 100% a hardware issue, so you can dispense with the paranoia. The fact is that you do not have your tablet configured in such a way that one could install or run any type of remote access app without your knowledge and consent.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
this is Linux not Windows. Anything trying to install anything (if you are rooted) would popup the the confirmation to grant root access. If 'it' survived a factory reset, it's not software.

KNOW Your Device ...
Its your wife or maybe mother... Check the su or super user app to see what apps have root privileged. Also keep a eye on what apps are running by going to Settings Applications Running applications. YOU Will see the app start to run . If you are really concerned take root access away from all system and user apps in the su or super user app. then anything that could run and do what you are thinking will Have to ask for root again.. Since i agree with the other post . NONE Of the above will pop up a suspect app .
I know this post is not needed all But atleast it tells him how to check for himself what is going on with his apps and running services....
I think it might be your screen protector cuz it looks really bad from the 2nd video.

This ^ might indeed be worth checking out prior to sending the unit back for replacement - take the protector off and see if the problem persists. (TBH though, I can't tell from the video if the protector is non-uniform or that is a reflected pattern from the ceiling in the room where the video was made.)
The OP would not be the first person to encounter an overly sensitive touchscreen (low level noise becomes "false touches") with or without a screen protector, but generally screen protectors will make the situation worse if the touchscreen is too sensitive to begin with.
The OP's post is an excellent example of a violation of the "Occam's Razor" principle - when presented with alternate explanations for a given phenomena that equally well describe the observed behavior, the simpler of the two explanations should be presumed. In this case, an overly-sensitive touch screen that generates rapid random touch events is a far simpler explanation than assuming that someone has hacked your device and is remote-controlling it (via a non-existent API) with seemingly random input... right in front of the OP's face.

You are correct in that it is not needed. He is not rooted , and therefore does not have superuser or, by extension any third party apps with root access. It is not an app issue

I'm guessing you've got some really important info worth stealing on your N7?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Your device has NOT been hacked. There is an issue with the digitizer, and you are getting false touches. You are still locked and unrooted, so you are, most likely, still within the warranty period. Please call customer to support to set up an RMA for troubleshooting/repair.
OR, you can wipe the whole tablet to see if the issue persist. I am almost certain the tablet will still behave that way after a reset, but you can try if you want.
