[Request]How to enable SMS In Kitkat - Nexus 7 (2013) General

In Kitkat, only default sms app can get and set sms. But I found the new sms software hangouts does not work on sms. So I get a mms.apk from aosp rom and it can run but show it is not the default sms app, and change this in setting. Then I open the sms setting and tells me touch to set default sms app. I do touch but useless.

I too have this problem, the entire system menu where you would be able to select the default SMS application appears to be missing in the Deb build. I suspect that this has to do with the telephony apk or framework.
Maybe some kindhearted developer will be able to work us up a patch.

Right! The setting should be in the wireless and networks. Need someone to mod the framwork.

Get Back the Old SMS Interface in KitKat with 8sms

8sms cannot work in the N7 LTE . There is no response from app when you tap on it to select as default message app

This does not work on the 4.4 build for Deb. The entire menu to select a default SMS app is disabled/missing. Hopefully someone will come out with a patch soon, but for now, your information is false.

I think you need to go into the settings within 8sms and select stand alone mode and then it will work for you.

That setting does not exist in SMS applications on 4.4 and even if it did it would NOT work. In order for a SMS application to read and write the SMS hooks on 4.4 is is absolutely required that it be set as the one and only default SMS application. A setting which is NOT available on our devices. Until someone figures out how to reenable it in the telephony framework and puts out a flashable patch NO SMS application will work on stock, official, 4.4 for Deb.
Do you understand the issue here now?

The link I gave above says it works in 4.4 on the Nexus 5. Why would 4.4 on the Nexus 7 be different? I have it working in Jelly Bean on my N7 but I won't sideload Kitkat until I have time later this week, so I won't be able to test it out til then.

Because the Nexus 7 does not officially support SMS and Google made the boneheaded move of disabling it altogether. If you care to look back a few days you'll notice that it is also impossible to get Hangouts SMS working on the LTE Nexus 7, so, this isn't an entirely new issue, Google just fired another shot.
I'm sitting here with the device in front of me running the stock 4.4 build, I've looked through ever menu and every setting for the past two days. It does not work.
It does not work because Google decided it shouldn't work.
The SimpleMessageReciever application appears to be hardcoded as the only application capable of reading the SMS hook, and Write appears to be completely disabled. A patch is the ONLY way.
If you require SMS functionality on your LTE Nexus 7, do NOT upgrade to (stock) KitKat until someone figures out how to fix it.

Did you open 8sms and go into the settings within the app and see if the stand alone mode is there? Like I said, Ihave it working for mme on Jelly Bean.

The setting is NOT there. I've spent the last two days coming at this issue from every possible angle. IT DOESN'T WORK and won't without a framework patch. (A similar issue to that with tethering on ATT, which also requires a patch to remove something stupid that Google decided to hard code).
Even if the setting was there, it wouldn't matter because that is no longer how KitKat handles SMS applications. I read the f'ing documentation.
edit: Nothing you say about JB is relevant, KitKat completely changed the way SMS is handled, and Google *intentionally* broke the ability to select a client on Deb, so, it will not work without a patch. There is NO other way. Everything you can suggest, I've tried already... twice.
Not to be rude, but I really have and people suggesting the same thing over and over, things that I've clearly stated don't work, or things that are in the 4.4 documentation as no longer applicable is really starting to bug me.

Well, I didn't mean to upset you. All I have is the link I posted saying it does work in Kitkat on the Nexus 5. I'm sure I'll be upset too if it's not working by the time I finally get 4.4 loaded. I'll just have to wait and see.

It doesn't work, stand alone only works for 4.3 below...
Most settings are disabled...
Edit:
Try this guys, I can do a balance inquiry using it, but i couldn't test it with other number since I don't have a regular load and it's too late to go out now 1:26 am here...
You can't set it as default sms app though....

My week with Gingerbread :^(

As we all know Gingerbread has been in the oven... And I was one of those people who could not wait for it to cool off. As soon as I saw the leak early saturday morning, I was already downloading. what could go wrong, right? I odin'd the ef02.tar, started her up and wow, she's beautiful, save the extra ugly 4g symbol in the window sill (notification bar) that looks even worse now than previous desserts.
Keep in mind this is a stock .tar. No root. No cwm. No nothing. Except bloat. Low and behold my beautiful lil girl had a very serious functionality flaw. After my first reboot, no more incoming phone calls :^(...
So I've tried everything, I gained root, installed cwm 3.1.0.1 wiped data, cache, dalvik multiple times. Re odin'd the .tar. Flashed Decad3nce's odexed and deodexed roms. Updated modems. Tried frozen on ec05, took a shot at simply AOSP, odin'd a stock ec05, even went all the way back to eb13, with cwm 2.5 (changing file systems when needed) now I'm back to a bone stock ec05 from the stickies in development... Still no incoming phone calls. I called sprint technical and they were unable to resolve the issue.
Funny thing is I can make calls, I have data (3&4g), I can text, just won't receive.
Has anybody else seen anything remotely close to this. If so please comment, if not, comment anyways. I wanna get some opinions on my situation.
P.S. feel free to laugh at my short comings, lord knows just thinking about it brings chuckles to my mind...

You know, i did install google voice. But ive installed it multiple times until now, so i figured it was unrelated. But this past time it did take my texts through there, which had never happened before. thats why i uninstalled it. Im gonna check that out and see if it fixes it. Good luck with your issues.
Sounds like you clicked yes to Sprint integration (ports your number temporarily to google). So they go to your google voice account, however you can check an option to have them sent also to your phone as well (although if you do this with google voice installed you will probably get 2 notifications per 1 sms). Also call screening is an option that is enabled by default, option in google voice (desktop web interface). I had to turn that off too (the press 1 thing). Hope this helps, its just options. Also you could go online and disable the integration and go back to normal.
EDIT: Also make sure your phone is listed to receive calls in the web interface (via a desktop). I know it should do this by default but maybe it didn't for god knows what reason?

I remember when I did that... Sat there for an hour pulling out my hair before I realized I needed to click the number on the right side of the GoogleVoice Page to change the settings. Not my proudest moment.
Yea, I think if multiple people on smart enough to flash a rom get confused I think google needs to make thinks a bit easier to understand. Glad I could help.

Sending too many SMS texts

My brother on his Nexus 4 16GB LTE (as were from Canada and LTE works on the Nexus 4 here) keeps getting this sending SMS error. It reads as follows
Messaging is sending a large number of SMS messages. Do you want to allow this app to continue sending messages?
Deny or Allow
He has to keep clicking allow all the time as its the stock google messaging app he is using.
Now my question is has anyone else experienced this on the nexus 4. He said its really pissing him off. I checked if he had a bad app installed and there was nothing out of the ordinary.
So does any one know how to fix this issue. We went into settings and increased and removed the messaging limit and the problem keeps on popping up still.
Check the picture for how it looks.
Now some of you might experience this issue when you send massive amounts of text messages!
Any help would be nice! Thanks in advance!

There is a setting under security or something like that that limits the number of texts that can be sent in a set period of time. Unfortunately there is nothing that can be done to remove this on the Stock ROM. The feature is not built into over AOSP ROMs (like CM) so if this is his first Nexus device (and plain AOSP) he may not be used to this problem.
I'm not sure if the setting is built into the framework or just the MMS.apk, if it's the later you could probably swap in the MMS.apk from CM

Wow you serious what douche bags would not at least give you the option to allow legit messages. I understand bad apps taking advantage of that but for the stock messaging app it should be a one time disable option.
So to install the CM mms apk will I need root access. We don't want to root out phones at this time.

You'll need the ROM, not just the APK. The CM10 settings for this "feature" are in the ROM settings, not the APK.
That said, if you were rooted, there's probably a mod that can be done rather than flashing a custom ROM.

You need to send a ****load of messages in a short time to even trigger this, and it goes away after a minute or two. If you want to get rid of it, root the phone. If you don't want to root the phone, try another SMS app or you're SoL.

Reasons not to update your N7 to Kitkat 4.4 (yet)

Here are some reasons that you should not update your Android OS to 4.4 for the time being (as of Nov 15):
1. Flash is broken. The sideloaded Adobe flash no longer works (at least with Firefox)
2. Stock email app is not fully functional. Issues are reported with Exchange sync. In my case, I use imap mail. Stock email app even had problem syncing with my imap server. Emails deleted on my computer still showed on my N7.
3. XBMC (nightly built) is only working after you disable hardware decoding.
4. Most of the improvements in UI (launcher) featured in Nexus 5 DO NOT appear on Nexus 7. Your launcher looks nearly the same as 4.3.
Anyone else encountered issues with KitKat? Feel free to add to the list above.
[Update]
In case you updated to 4.4, and want to revert back, this is one way to return to 4.3:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/0...stock-using-a-full-factory-image-and-root-it/
Warning!!! You will lose your data. So backup anything important.
After you put 4.3 back, here is how you remove notification to automatic update to 4.4:
1. Go to Settings - Apps - ALL - Google Services Framework (Uncheck "Show notifications")
2. This doesn't stop Android from download the update. If your N7 is rooted, you can delete the update file. It is in /cache. (If your N7 is not rooted, you are out of luck)
3. In the future, if you want the update again:
Go to Settings - Apps - ALL - Google Services Framework (clear cache and data, restart)
For the reason 4, you can download and install Google Home launcher. It work perfectly ☺

I came from CM10.2 and glitch kernel to stock Kitkat then kitkat with glitch.
Things I miss from that transition:
- In the close programs area I miss the close all the programs at once ability.
- I miss being able to swipe down and hold on the WiFi toggle to switch networks
- I miss my USB DAC working (this is no big deal to me but it is cool when it works)
I am beginning to come to the understanding though that regardless whether you are on a Custom ROM, Stock 4.3, Stock 4.4, whatever......
it really all looks the same, and acts the same. I think you just pick what you like and go with it and that's what is wonderful about the Android platform......the ability to pick and choose.
If I want my USB DAC back I'm quite literally a ROM flash away from doing it.
For now I'm going with kitkat and glitch kernel which nets me a 3G wireless dongle. If it weren't for the dongle stock 4.4 would be just fine for me.

It works for me, as well. Nice new feature, especially once Google Search is updated to v3.1. Thanks for the tip!
I don't see very many reasons NOT to upgrade to 4.4 on a Nexus 7 2013.....I've lost two apps: wifi manager and Xposed framework to activate the "experimental features" of Greenify. Greenify still works, of course, and Xposed will soon be updated.

The two things I miss are Xposed (and the Gravity add on). I also didn't want to give up Multiboot. So, I left 4.3 as my "internal" OS and loaded 4.4 as a secondary in Multiboot. I then set 4.4 as the default. Elemental kernel works fine with the WiFi fix posted. Now I need to go back and trim a lot of fat off my 4.3 "base" install.
When I can get Multiboot and Xposed I will probably flash 4.4 as the base OS.

Hey, I waited.. about 10 seconds!
Flash is dying. I don't think adobe is developing it any longer for android. They only have older version without support on their website.
Good, then we shall fight in the shade!
The biggest 4.4 issue for me is that text reflow is broken in lots of apps including Yahoo Mail and browsers (Next, Opera, etc). (Text reflow reformats the column of text partially visible on the screen to fit the screen. ie. zoom in until it's big enough and the the text is reformatted either automatically or by a double tap.
It's a huge issue for me as I find mobile web sites a poor substitute for their full featured desktop siblings. Without text reflow, I'm stuck scrolling horizontally to read each line.
I don't use flash a lot but find it pretty essential when I need it.
Web browsing also seems significantly slower with multiple browsers than 4.3.1,
I'm restoring my backup and going back to 4.3.1. Kit Kat didn't bring anything I've found significant in my use but has broken stuff that's important to me.
Kitkat doesn't bring anything significant, but brings problems (which will be ironed out over time, but now they are there).
It's definitely best to stay on 4.3 until it really pays to upgrade.
Sometimes the Android community appears to me like a religious cult where people dance around a golden calf and don't want to see reality anymore. "Holy update! Save my soul!"

I don't feel like downgrading since I got sick battery life with 4.4 but what I miss the most is app ops. The best feature from 4.3 and almost no-one is talking about the removal of it.

[Q] [d801] PA LATEST BUILDS 12/27 & 12/31

Hey, @houstonn! Everyone,
First, I've really wanted to thank you for the longest for all the work you've put in for for all LGG2 variants. I've been with you from the beginning, the quiet kid at the back of the class without the ten notches to do anything other than click Thanks! But it's been awesome. Even getting myself out of some sticky situations alone has tested my metal. It's a good thing I like to read.
K. More adulation later. Just have wanted to make note of something that I haven't ever seen throughout the PA thread concerning the d801 from the 12/24 build to present working 12/31. Don't wanna bring you more headaches after reading about v.01/03, but I'm hoping you or someone can verify an issue I've been experiencing on the three latest builds.
I can clean install PA using TWRP 2.6.3.4 Do so always as with the 2day 12/27 skin I was wearing until dirty flashing the 12/31 just now. Upon initial boot everything is spot on. I'll have already flashed my backup apps post gapps and be setting up, Google Now and offline voice recognition downloaed then set to auto update. Google Now will work hands free for a good while so I can't be exact about the interval between it working and losing the prompt in the Search box, which in turn leads to SMS fails in both stock messaging and Hangouts. I still receive SMS via both apps, but my sends fail every time after something 'breaks'.
I did notice something yesterday while running forensics. I switched Hangouts to batch MMS mode and texted to one party and pinged myself as well. So Hangouts/Messaging only works in MMS mode for me. I've yet to read this anywhere in the novel that is your thread and I do read, so correct me if this has been addressed. I checked App Ops and found the SMS send set to off in Stock Messaging but everything on in Hangouts, but figured that had to be the cause or Hangouts' doing by default since both apps must use the same broadcast intent, thus why both don't audibly run at once. It's really the only problem I have but it seemed strangely obscure enough to mention. I can't think of a possible cause or a way to track it other than running a log. Fall short of doing so cuz I have another phone running custom KK 4.4.2 and I have no problems messaging with it. As for Google Now and voice Recog, when I go back into language settings, my alternate languages will have disappeared until I toggle back and forth between 'when to update' and 'available to DL languages'. By then, English UK (US), French & Spanish have repopulated the downloaded field, yet hands free voice recog fails.
Otherwise, no other errors. I freakin love this ROM and with UV/OC, I'm maxing out some lengthy battery life upwards of 14 hours with screen on for 8 out of the whole! Yea, I'm on it feverishly but who can blame me. It's wicked smooth and you're awesome!!!
Thanks heaps!

I'm sorry, if it is a problem having my post here under the labeled Q&A thread for my device, I understand if you need to move it. As I really had a minute issue and was unable to post directly to the PA forum at the time, searched and evidently missed the thread you mentioned, I saw no problem in posting under the General device specific Q&A. Thanks for the correction. I'll be more thorough in searching next time.

True that. Everything else about it, I love though. It's fast, looks nice, and isn't bloated.
where to get AOSP messaging app from lollipop? like this on xperia. or is it the same like in kitkat? (no material design)
You can't get AOSP SMS client without building from source or ripping from another ROM. This Messenger has material design. AOSP SMS doesn't.
Whats the use of this search button? It doesn't work at all... its just printed over there...
Personally, I think Chomp > Messaging, but the only thing I'm wondering about is that I thought it was supposed to come with Lollipop and be set as the default SMS client over Hangouts. I installed 5.0 from the factory images last night and it wasn't included at all, nor was any gallery app besides G+ Photos.
I am waiting for someone to mod it so that I can have access to the quick links in notifications - reply, delete, read, etc. Those were so darn useful.

A few options in Lollipop seem to be broken.
An example is that in Accounts and Sync, the option to sync is called " Cancel Sync ". There's no option called " Sync Now " anymore. Seems like they forgot it.

That's pretty much the only thing I'm missing.
For clarification to whom of those who don't know yet -- Hangouts is still the default SMS client in official 5.0.

It works for me. It force closed the app on first try but now I can use it to search my messages without issues. It's very useful.
Love this app. So nice and clean.

Agreed. I hope they don't merge Hangouts into Messenger.
I do like the new messenger I just wish it was a little more smoother like the new newsstand

I was going to ask which device and Android you were on then read your signature. Strange. It's smooth and doesn't lag at all for me. I too, would hate it if it did. Everything is pretty much smooth, except Tapatalk..but that's the app's fault.
will it be possible to use stock 4.3 messenger on 5.0?
link to the SMS Messaging (AOSP) on play market.
now it says "This app is incompatible with your device."

I have yet to try since Messenger > AOSP SMS IMHO. I wouldn't see what would be stopping you though. I'd recommend using an apk downloader to download it from the Market and send it to yourself an email and see if you can get it on your phone that way.

8sms is has the options we are looking for. They are supposedly updating soon to the material design. Try it out.
I don't have that shadow under the top bar, does anyone know why it could be like that? and contact pictures look bad.
Is that button yellow or blue, cause mine is blue.
EDIT:
I'm on LG G2 CM11
