[Q] root boot rom problem? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello magical unicorn people of the XDA forums!
DrunkDocHoliday here, with a little problem...
OK, so, down to the bizznizz......
i recently baught a samsung galaxy note 3, 8.0 inches...
of course the first thing that i did when i got home was root the thing.... and i already have a samsung galaxy s3, rooted.... with many roms...
so i thaught to myself, can a foxhound rom built for a s3 work on a note 3? so i tried it, and what do ya know, it didnt work -_-
after trying to install the rom, it finished, and went to a new screen with a big ass android on it saying do not disconnect! or something along those lines... anyways, i just thaught oh well, delete that bad install, and pressed the home volume up and power buttons, to get into my TWRP recovery, then the image of the big android came back up, although it was still legible, it was all jaggy, with a hell of a ton of screen tearing, also, when it is done, afterwards there is screen tearing splitting, etc. then it goes blank and starts into the TWRP recovery. . . . . when i get to the samsung boot screen and get to the home page, everything is laggy, and music/videos are all cut at some parts. listning to music, for example, plays, but at some parts, is silent, or skips ahead, or repeats the last 1 second on and on and on and on.... then goes back to the rest of the song.... also, sometimes, i go to swipe down to turn on wifi, and the screen freezes and automatically shuts itself off....
so i was just wondering if anyone out here in the magical xda unicorn people ruled forums knows the answer to my question?
im wondering if i should format all data on internal, photoes, apps, info, docs, music, vids, everything! but little ol me is worried about when i format everything, then, naturally, everything will be gone! even the OS! shiiiiiiiiiiiiit, so yeah. how can i make the (now) ****ty fuzzy screen tearing uber pixelated messed up screen that was once the picture of a giant android saying dont turn off) how to get rid of it! or files for all things stock in the note 3 8.0, apps, os, etc, so i can just wipe all and install fresh from odin....

So did you buy a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 or a Samsung Galaxy Note 8. Seriously, if you can't work out what model you bought then I'd recommend not flashing it for a while.
The fact that both the S3 and the Note 3 have a 3 in the name doesn't make them compatible.

i recognize that the Note 3 and galaxy s3 are not the same, i was just wondering if i could flash a rom from my s3 sd card on my note 3 ...TOTALLY MY FAULT I KNOW. i was just being a stupid curious bastard... even though i knew that the answer would be a NO. but when i recovered my backup i thaught the screen tearing and sluggishness would go away... it still works though, just wondering how to get it back to all stock without going back to the store..

? he has a tab 3....he does not know the difference between a note 3 and tab 3......and s3 haha

My Big blunder

What y'day i did was i thing biggest blunder ever i caused on android.
Here is story
My friend came to me to get update to ICS for his device SGS 2.
I have done lots of flashing/rooting so it was not a big task for me, just i have asked abt his device and i have downloaded require ICS ROM for his device.
I have flashed it with odin
it was failed.
I have retry again fail
Lost recovery as well download mode too.
I was confidient (N over smart)
used JIG to get into download mode
find out pit file and flashed it
find out boot loader and flashed it
Nothing nothing it was semi bricked
Downloaded GB ROM and flashed
Fail, here i exhausted
And ask my friend are you sure your device is i9100 and not the varient?
he : yes it is i9100G
ME : then wtf you said it is i9100 when i have asked you at starting of procedure
He: but you said digit is same, so i think 'G' have no meaning
Me : 'G' is same important as g-sp*t
Then i got perspirated, and badly searched for correct pit (Here really i can say Note forum is much organised)
after 2hrs of search i found correct pit N bootloader (i think bootloader is almost same) but it was abt 3am and battery was emptied
Again in morning managed battery and flashed correct pit
then stcok GB and then ICS
and phone wokeup after a full night of deep sleep But Now i need a good sleep. But thnx God at last everything is fine.
Moral :
Confidence is good to have, but over confidence can kill U

Interesting and useful experience sharing! Thanks.
there's a lesson for us all in that tale Dr Ketan!
Look before you leap!!

wow~.... your friend nearly killed his device by withholding that tiny bit of info... lol
Glad to see you recovered it for him
That happened with me. When in december last year i got my sgs2 at that time i was not aware if there is i9100g is present in the market.
So for rooting purpose i had to download insecure kernel or an older rom.
I flashed a i9100 and was stuck at samsung logo.
After that i researched here about it and found out thelat samsung screwed me.
Nice,
Moral..... Don't bother to play with others device...
Thanks for sharing Dr,
And I learn my first root from ur thread...thanks a lot
brililant and scary story im pretty sure u wont repeat this when someone comes to you with a US Note

ermmm ...how did you miss the big 19100G below the samsung logo?! I'm sure I've seen a G variant before and it stated 19100G on boot.
anyway your story is a good reminder that even if you are a pro you need to double check everything

I guess we should check it from now on.
to be honest I also made a mistake with my friend's S2 ,though not that big but still, I rooted and installed CM9 all the while talking about nandroid backup and that he shouldn't worry about loosing his stuff cause a nandroid restore will return them all
in the end he wanted to go back to GB ,so I rebooted into recovery and viola it hit me like a train that I forgot to make a nandroid backup in the first place lol.
mistakes do happen it seems ,but one should learn from them so as not to repeat them .
Well try to flash the software for engine of a ferrary on a fiat...
wwwrrrouuuuummmmmm or brick - that's the question.
Nothing is more funny than real life.
@Mr.Change
Ya once it mistake, but repeat of mistake is stupidity.
Though it was misunderstanding, but i believe it was my blunder, b'coz i shudn't have to rely on his answer. if he is sound then why wud he come to me for just flashing, thats why i cudn't sleep for half night.
I had similar situation, i ordered and payed a i9100, who came with the mail and my first look on the box?
"Hm what's with the G letter, what this means?!"
Google straight away - and guess what? Completly different as Samsung said improved phone but do i need G version? No, i dont cause i suspected that most of the custom roms will be build for original i9100.
I spand half of my day explainin a guy who sold me the phone that this isn't phone that i ordered!
At the end i asked: Do you have Galaxy Note? He said yes i do, excellent i'm coming to get it
So guys be careful when you're buyin or flashin phone

[Q] selling my a500

I'm going to sell my a500 and have a question. I'm on a stock ICS ROM and rooted with the latest bootloader. Should I leave it as so or would people much rather buy a bone stock unrooted tab? Thanks!

It would seem I'm having a problem now trying to wipe my data... I don't understand it. Here is what I have done multiple times:
Factory reset
In CWM Wiped data, cache dalvik
formatted data, cache, system, flexrom
And there is still data left on the device, wtf? For example this small video I made in the movie maker app still has the video.
What am I doing wrong here? Thanks!

I think this should do the trick...

Ouch, the ATT Note 3 Development threads are ghost towns :(

The Development threads for the ATT Note 3, have tumble weeds blowing, and crickets chirping.
Really sucks, that such an awesome device like the Galaxy Note 3, with a locked firmware, just like my ATT S4 on MF3
I was thinking of upgrading to the Note 3, from my S4, since I got screwed being on MF3, but seems the Note 3 is in no better shape than the S4 in that regard ?
MOD EDIT: Profanity is unacceptable on this site and has been removed
you can still make it sexy even with it locked
My Galaxy Note 3 Is A Definite Go!!!!!
My Galaxy Note 3 Is A Definite Go!!!!!
Locked bootloader isn't holding me back lol
My Galaxy Note 3 Is A Definite Go!!!!!
Good point. My S4 even though locked, is rooted, and I run Wannam Xposed Framework + Nova Launcher + Axis Icons, and several other .apk's, to really customize it.
But with ROM's, you can get kernels for better battery life, and smoother / faster performance.
A room is pointless on this thing I get around 17 hours or of a charge with 5 hours of media usage watching videos and listening to music and 4 hours of screen on time normal usage is even better and the As far as being smooth I personally haven't experienced any lag really the phone is really smooth and fast right out of the box no need for all of the other stuff

I...need a asop ROM...I do not like touchwiz

Oh! Any suggestions on what I can add for Xposed?

What? The note 3 is locked? Is this just a temporary thing or will there be a fix soon? I was just about to buy one of these! Looks like I might have to reconsider the Nexus 5.

Yep, ATT are being real douche bags lately. Just like my S4 running MF3 firmware, making the S4 locked down tight, with no Recovery allowed and little hope someone will break it.
The Note 3, looks to be the same. Doubtful we'll see a real Recovery on it. Maybe Safestrap at best.
So no custom kernels

Seems to be ATT's fault, not Samsung.
I actually like ATT service here in Chicago, good price, better than T-Mobile network for me, but for them to start locking down their phones hard all of a sudden is a new thing. I had the ATT Note 2 last year, and it was rootable, and I had custom Recovery with ROM's. Same with my ATT Galaxy S2, was open to Recoveries.
But now ATT locked the S4 in a firmware update a few months ago, screwed that great phone up, and now out of the box the Note 3 seems to have a hard lock on it, with no true root and no custom Recovery option available, and no idea if anyone will be able to crack it ?

I have to agree with you on this. AT&T does have exceptional service. However, them locking these phones is insane. I am almost half tempted to look on CL and buy a T-Mobile one and unlock it to work on AT&T
I just checked the Verizon Note 3 Development threads, and wow, they actually have some nice ROM's going on in there.
Checked the ATT Note 3 Development thread = :crying: Tumble weeds blowing, and crickets chirping, NOTHING going on.
I thought a Verizon phone would more locked down, and harder to crack than an ATT phone ? When did this change, where Verizon is developer friendly over ATT ?

The only difference between the two is that the ATT model is SElinux enforcing while the Verizon model is not. This means that hashcode has gotten his safestrap recovery working on the Verizon model but is still looking for a way to bypass the enforcements on our model.

It looks good but custom roms aren't always just about aesthetics.
I'm willing to bet that Loki would have been achieved long ago for the ATT Note 3 if the developer didn't retire it.

[Q] A500 always powers off after booting up

Hey folks! I have an Acer A500 that I have been working on "with" dibb_nz over the past week. I have no idea what was on it originally, it came to me nearly dead. After a TON of attempts and hard work from dibb, I now have Skrilax's bootloader and recovery installed. I flashed CM10-10 Flex_V6 ROM from Civato onto the device successfully. Here is the problem: no matter how I boot up, it either goes directly into "Power off - Shutting down" then vibrates and blanks out or, after a fresh install, it will say "Android is upgrading", "Optimizing apps", "Starting Apps", then on to the Power Off-shutting down thing.
Does anyone have any clue what may be going on here? I have tried earlier ROMS, all from Civato, but with the same Power OFF result.
Any help would be MUCH appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Sharkguy
hey sharkguy, I've been combinf forums and threads with no joy at all, the only thing I haven't checked is the rom thread, might pay you to look thru that, just in case its rom related ( I doubt it really, but there maybe other reports such as yours ) If I ever come across something I'll be sure to get back to you, good luck m8

Hey Dibb! Offhand, I think it may be the old power part that used to be flashed with stock ROMs. Forget what its actually called. Typically we removed this from the install as its generally not needed. That's a guess, but am at work for the night so can't check my stuff. Could explain the shutdown. But if it shuts down when updating the apps, then its probably bad memory partition.
But I'll lean more towards the power part. Will have to check a stock ICS ROM. Might need to make a separate flash install just for it. It it would boot to the display and it had horrible display and battery issues then that would be it.
Well, that sounds complicated. I should have the new battery by the weekend so let me at least try that before anyone gets all technical. Unfortunately I dont know anyone with another a500 to test batteries...

Hey MD good to see u my friend
oh, the eec thing? Rings a bell...
The bad memory partition, do you mean the memory chip itself or just the partition.
I've just never heard of the faulty chip causing a spontaneous shut down, sure has me beat....and I Hate that, lol
But thanks for the response MD, if you can offer any solution from your archives of knowledge and wisdom, I know someone who'd be forever grateful
Have a great day all!!

Yeah Dib, the eec thing. Just couldn't remember. Usually we just removed that command from the install script as usually once it was flashed at the factory, rarely did you ever have to flash it again. I will have to look and see in the next couple of days. Worth a shot though. Might be able to put it in a CWM install.
Oh, forgot to add @sharkguy
As with a damaged partition, if the memory got hosed in that particular partition, whichever, there's not a whole lot that can be done. Could try running babsector, but not sure if it would fix it or not. There's been success running it before, but only about 30% as I can tell. Devblks can get physically damaged. Usually the partitions are large enough to mark the bad spots as bad, and still be able to install things. That's what babsector did I think as near as I can tell.
A faulty chip "could" cause a shutdown, especially if it couldn't create the dalvak which is kind of the next step when "starting applications" If I guess right, although I would think it would bootloop rather than shut down. As you say, I've never heard of a power off before, unless the eec was bad and it thinks the battery is dead.
I'm just curious if the OP has done a full format on internal memory via CWM? Before installing. Not the usual wipes, but going into advanced, and triggering the full format. I used it after running that CM stuff awhile back, as it messed up everything (lots of testing). Needed a clean sweep of the internal memory.
As you see, I am still around Just with being a senior mod, not a lot of time for messing with things.
I'm still leaning towards eec pwr. (I'm using beer logic at this point)
Bear with me on this. Let's say the eec got hosed somehow. It happens on occasion. And you install several custom roms, which of course don't have eec pwr in the install script as we removed it. Here's what I know.
1) Battery won't charge and is always going to shut down
2) No response on the touch screen if indeed the OS starts.
3. Tab shuts down after OS start.
So you see why I am leaning towards this.
MD
EDIT: The reason why we removed eec from the custom roms to begin with, primarily as it really wasn't needed, but it "could" cause an issue if the flash went bad. But considering the OP has UID and NVFlash, that isn't an issue now.

Hey MD, thanks for thr insight on my issue. I worked closely with Dibb_nz for close to a week. I am not entirely sure if I did the wipe you mentioned, but believe me, if I could find a way to format, erase, wipe or clear memory I did. Everything you described as what you knew is correct with one exception: if it is relevant the touch screen works in recovery mode.

I cannot recommend it but then my tab has never been in that state...and I'm not sure I could bring myself to put it in the oven lol...u nut wanna take a look at it any way

Oh I've heard of ppl doing such things, but I'm luckily far mor fortunate than that. I am an electronics technician and have access to far for humane methods than an oven! Maybe I will see if I can still get the deal, then hack the a500 to pieces after geting the new battery in the mail. Lol

Well, you'll be in your element then,lol...Yeh, your issue is rather unique...with babsector not returning any error its out of my area of expertise!!! But I do know that Acers build quality isn't the best....from power buttons falling out to the memory chip failure and their dodgy soldering techniques, i'm leaning towards a hardware fault 'somewhere'....
But then, it does seem strange the tab powers off during "updating apps" that points to software doesn't it???? Have look in the guide for fastboot commands (if you still have the unlocked bootloader on there) I'd erase all partitions, /system, /data, /cache etc....then run babsectot again to repartition -flash a rom and see what happens...or use tdv4 to do the same, but no rom flash needed for that as it comes with HC 3.2.1 rooted and cwm.
Anyways m8 keep us updated - and fingers crossed you end up with a positive resolution

One of the last things I think I did was tdv4 without a rom flash. It still came up with the same issue. I did notice that when I took the battery out to charge on the equipment at work (closely monitored of course) to see if there was an issue with the charging circuit, that I could still do all of the same things as before with just the AC plugged in. No battery. This is why I bought a battery to try that out. The Galaxy 3 guy realized what a steal he was offering me and bumped up his price so it looks like I'm stuck woth the A500.
Thanks for the crossed fingers!!

Well new battery us in and seems to charge just fine. In fact the tablet would not even attempt to power on before without AC so that is a plus. However, the same thing happens still. Boots up, and as soon as it enters the OS it gies straight to powering down.
What was the EEC thing you guys were discussing? Would it potentially help here?
Thanks again!

Used all of the elements at my disposal at work to reflow the board without any change in the status of the tablet. Any ideas based on that EEC thing you guys discussed above?

Soz m8 been full on at work to even check emails let alone reply...phew!!!!
As MD pointed out above, the EEC file thing, devs have dealt with that particular issue, but b/c yours is a relatively unique issue I guess it can't be ruled out...
Have you managed to take a look at fastboot and using the erase command to delete EVERYTHING - at least u can be sure its as clean as can be, then using babsector with an appropriate rom and see what happens there.
In that "tab flu" thread there are links to another thread (somewhere) re: eec thing - If you find it can link it here in this thread and I'll track down the file -
Oh, just to be clear - when it boots into to the OS and powers off - is it completely shutting down i.e. power led is off or is it actually booting to apx mode, black screen power lite on...whats the chances of a vid so we can see exactly what it does???

Sure I can video it for ya, but how should I link it? Can I link to YouTube on these forums?

Ok, so new development, so to speak. As you can see from the crappy video I shot just now, I can boot the tablet into the start of the OS, but it hangs at Powering Down. The new part is that I had to manually shut it off, it did not do that itself this time. I showed you the power light (orange) and when I press it again, it does power on, but is still hung up on the same screen. I don't know if that helps any, but now you can see it. By the way, sorry it is upside down, it was the only way to show you the power button after it booted.

Help to setup new Note 4 from old Note 4 phone (Transfer, debloat, what to do, etc)

Hey guys,
My old Note 4 was soo laggy I convinced Verizon to send me a new phone. Before I transfer everything to it, can someone give me some good pointers as to what I should and should not do? My 3 month old Note 4 is soo laggy its painful. Swiftkey keyboard in whatsapp is painfully slow, Waze never picks up a GPS, the list goes on and on.
Can someone please let met know what I can I do to optimize this phone before I set it up? Thanks!

How were you able to get verizon to send you a new phone due to lag? Were there issues as well?
Mine is only 6 months old and in great condition, but I'd love to try and get one without BOG5 pre-installed so I could roll it back to 4.4 and use Kingroot to install some system apps.

When I bought my Note 4 about 3 months ago it shipped with BOG5 already on it. So so likelihood of you getting one without it are slim to none. Just figured I'd let you know.
