[Q] selling my a500 - Acer Iconia A500

I'm going to sell my a500 and have a question. I'm on a stock ICS ROM and rooted with the latest bootloader. Should I leave it as so or would people much rather buy a bone stock unrooted tab? Thanks!

I would leave it with the ics rom if it was me selling mine, May I ask why sellng?

Cool thanks for the opinion.
Don't mind at all, I've had this tab since it came out and just got a nexus 10 for my birthday a few days ago.
I know they are just machines but I'm always sad when I upgrade and have to part with my old devices lol.

Devices
G tablet
Acer A500]
T Prime 201
Samsung Note 10.1
Asus ME400

^Thanks
It would seem I'm having a problem now trying to wipe my data... I don't understand it. Here is what I have done multiple times:
Factory reset
In CWM Wiped data, cache dalvik
formatted data, cache, system, flexrom
And there is still data left on the device, wtf? For example this small video I made in the movie maker app still has the video.
What am I doing wrong here? Thanks!

I'm hoping Acer stops being douches and unlocks the bootloader, but who knows. It's depressing to look in the Transformer subforums and see "kernel 1.5GHz custom XYZ ROM" and we're lucky to have NTFS modules working.
It's a solid device and I'll likely keep it, but I also have the luxury of being able to buy another tablet in a couple of months if all goes well, so that can be my hack-away tab. By then 3.1 should be more widespread and Kal-El will be out soon, so I may wait for that even.
If.you.go under android development tab the system images post i think. The guybsays his acer contact is.looking at the bootloader policy and they will see what they can do to help out the dev community needs

How about another poll option - don't care?
I've been a member of XDA for some time (5 years) and have benefited from XDA experience to install custom ROMs on three different Windows Mobile phones.
But I've had my HTC EVO 4G from when they first came out and I've never rooted it or put on a custom ROM. With Android, I never really needed to do so. It did pretty much everything I wanted it to do.
When I bought my Nook Color, I did root it and did play around with some custom ROMs, but now that I have my Acer, I've taken the Nook back to the standard release.
I've only rooted my Acer in order to get CIFS support. As long as we can root, I'm very happy with it.
So put me down as "don't care, love my Acer anyway!" !

Yes. Do not buy this tablet if your main goal is to work on hacking and custom roms. I just bricked my tablet yesterday while working on a custom ROM by inadvertently deleting a critical file from the /data partition that doesn't actually get flashed during the firmware update process. Now I'm stuck in a boot loop with no root and no possibility to fix it because of Acer's dumb bootloader lock.
I'm moving on from Acer. The A500 is a loat cause. Hopefully the Samsung 10.1 will have a more lenient boot loader policy otherwise I'll be getting the Asus Transformer.
Ya. That 'don't care' thing? That's me.
Though I did vote #3.
Dead. No.
Dying. Maybe.
It's still too early to judge. Maybe not in 'cracking' time, but in 'product life-cycle' time it is.
I vote for a 5th option, "This poll is stupid."
The device has barely even been out for a month, if you're that worried about it being hacked by now, then go get the transformer.
Fine tablet for me no need to go to a transformer or wat kind of tablet.....but....i will be waiting for Windows8 tot run on a500 so i can run software for the autistic kind of my girlfriend

Have you tried the Chinese firmware update file? My understanding was that that file was a full system reload.
I had screwed my unit and thought it was bricked however this saved mine and I then put the US 1.141.07 upgrade over it.

What have you contributed to the XDA community? I was the one who pointed out that you didn't need the Flexrom to unbrick your system and was the one who pointed out that you didn't need a previous ROM's boot.img to update. I also happen to work on a few Nexus One ROMs and I was the first to get a firmware out with a working video camera recording on Gingerbread.
I would suggest you do a bit more research before you start flaming my posts. My reasons for bricking is a whole lot more complex than simply deleting the TelephonyProvider.apk etc.
If you really want to compare, just head down to Freenode and check out how many devs are on the #xoom and #asus-transformer channels and compare that to the #acer-a500.
*shrug*
I couldn't really care less about your contributions. In this thread, you appear to be trolling.
You seem to be pushing the transformer quite a bit, too, judging by your twitter page.
I think you just have something against the Iconia, and are therefore trolling.

Just jumped ship from iPhone4 (sorta)

Hello! I am a Nexus S owner (for the second time now, had it back in the states then sold it before coming to Korea) Picked up an iPhone which I loved but after using Android on my Hp Touchpad, it made me realize how much I missed Android. I was going to pick up a Galaxy Nexus then realized they wanted 850 US dollars so I settled on a used Nexus S for 300,000 won (roughly 250 dollars) Its just like I remembered it, it feels cheap haha but I miss all the widgets and using the GO Keyboard on it is making the transition a lot easier. Also, the apps seemed a lot more polished up, I cant wait for Ice Cream, hopefully they roll the update soon over here. I'll still be bouncing back and forth to the iphone though.
What I really miss is my Droid Pro, anything with a portrait style keyboard is a-okay with me!
You don't have to wait for ics. Either update it manually or flash any ics rom. This is android, you can tinker with the phone whenever you like.

Yup, that's the best thing about the Nexus S, there's such a wealth of modifications for it. There's a very large amount of developers that support the phone.
Enjoy Korea, I lived there for about a year, fantastic place, I miss it a lot.
good choice!

How is it BS?
I compared my nexus to a 4s and the colors were much more viberant on my phone but they arnt real.
For instance I edited a pic on mine, it was really hard because I was really adjectings the lightinds like a pretty bicth #based, but then I transferred it to my computer. And wow it was off. Didn't even look like what I was working with on my phone.
So yes we have nicer colors. But they are fake. Over saturated.
Im not even going to call it retnia because its LCD and we have olee. But I need higher Res for my line of work.

While waiting for ICS to be released on a google phone my frustration has led me to an iPhone 4S. The screen is much clearer (retina is not bs), the phone is faster, and the battery life is better. I hope ICS is released soon for the Nexus S 9020A or I will end up selling the nexus s. I didn't buy a google phone to wait for updates. I may be impatient, but it's still really annoying.

Where have you been? The official update was already updated a while ago. You are probably going to have to flash a zip manually though cause I've heard there have been issues directly from your phone. If you're going to flash a zip you might as well flash a custom one. They're faster, better, more settings and tweaks, did I say BETTER?!? . Go and check some out you won't regret it
I am not rooted and was against flashing a custom rom as I have to wipe my phone and lose everything. Anyway around formatting device but still unlocking and rooting?

What's wrong with wiping? Just back up on your harddruve. I doubt your texts are that important. If so just screenshot using the Android sdk.

Have a look here, should be able to do a non destructive root on GB. After you do that you can backup all your apps and app data with titanium backup and restore it after unlocking the bootloader. Just remember to copy over any files you need on your sdcard before unlocking the bootloader (particularly the newly created titanium backup folder).
Texts and call logs can be backed up with smsbackup + or the likes. Orr just copy the relevant files with a file explorer on the phone, can't remember exactly where they are though.
I didn't realize you could backup without root. Was trying to wait it out for the OTA as I was scared to flash ics and AT&T radio as I have never before but may give it a shot this weekend. Thanks guys.

hi everybody, i decided last week to upgrade from my galaxy s to an atrix after seeing all the great accessories and the same processor as my eepad, i ordered a lapdock from amazon brand new for £100 and it looks great, and a used atrix off eBay which was advertised as perfect condition which it wasn't.
I did an update from the phone which put it into a never ending restart loop, i found out how to sort it with someones helpful YouTube video, i am now the proud owner of a rooted atrix that doesn't work as it should with the lapdock, and am having to learn about rooting.
Can anybody recommend a direction for me,?
if i unroot it using one of the android market apps, will i be able to update it with the official updates without it killing the phone again?
if i stay rooted which rom is best for use with lapdock, and camera?
thanks in advance

so you just want to unroot ur phone or completely want to go back to Stock Blur???
if you just want to unroot, I'd recommend unroot using Super-One-Click. (can search in the forum what it is and how to use it). or if you want to go back to fully stock Blur Rom, try getting a ROM SBF file and flash it with RSDLite.
thanks spiderx, the guy that I bought the from as decided to cooperate with me returning the phone for a refund, so ill be getting one thats standard, i might look at rooting in the future tho,
thanks again for taking the time to reply.

Possible AT&T N3 Safestrap?

I thought that this video would give some hope to the AT&T N3 community. Looks like the Verizon N3 is going to get (or got) a program called Safestrap which is allowing them to install custom ROMs and other things on their version of the N3. This should be made applicable to the AT&T version soon. It may not be as flexible as a unlocked bootloader but does give some hope of being able to have the phone the way you like it.

Oh man let's hope for the best. This is all kind of new to me having these issues. Even my One X was a pain in the ass, but not THIS bad with unlocking.
Will safe strap include being able to flash a kernel? That's honestly the #1 reason for an unlocked bootloader for me. I love playing around with cpu and gpu parameters trying to achieve best battery to performance. Plus faux123 has his kernel and coming from it with a nexus 4 I wish I had it on this device.
Safe strap will not allow kernel flashing. Only ROMs. It high-jacks boot up and redirects the device to boot from a secondary partition you create on the internal memory. You will lose space on internal memory to use safestrap. Although the Verizon folks (me included) have been able to overwrite the factory partition to avoid space lose. If you want to flash kernels you need to drop the 700 dollars on development edition of the phone. I can't believe how dead the development thread is for this device I was just looking for some options for a friend of mine who just got his AT&T N3.
I got more jelly beans than jelly belly, on my S3, S4, and both my Notes
Guess I should have stuck with nexus. Oh well ill trade the ability to flash kernels and roms for a removable battery and an sd card and large screen.
I'm pretty sure the DEVS within these forums will eventually find a way to crack the system. It's just a matter of time and patience.

I don't think that's ever going to happen. This is sad but it looks like the Note 3 (At&t Version) will never have an unlocked bootloader. There is no way around it.

So there's never going to be a ROM or custom recovery for the P905V

I'm guessing I should just ditch my Verizon note pro 12.2 because there isn't going to be any developer support. Seems like a waste.

Please see Sbreen94's last post in the development threat - [ROM][P900][DEC 31]Hyperdrive KK RLS1.1║Tab S Feature║Total Customization 1 2 3 - - if you decide to ditch your p905v maybe Sbreen94 can use it to develop another excellent Rom for P905 owners. The P900 guys delivered a device to hm and he produced. Maybe thats what needed in this case for the P905 versions.
I also have the 905V, and while I love the tablet, I'm really itching for some development for this thing. Going forward, this will be the last tablet I'll every buy through Verizon because I'm tired of their locking shenanigans.

That's why I went with the Wifi version and carry a hotspot. ROM and root development for tablets already suffer from lower market share but couple that with carrier influence and things are even harder. At the price point this larger tablet comes in its no surprise that development is slower for it.
Sent from my SM-P900 using Tapatalk
Yup, you live, you learn, and I've learned an expensive lesson. I've had the Tablet for 10 months and it's going to my Spouse this summer while I look for something that has more development behind it.
As I understand the 905v has a locked boot loader is easy to root but no flashing
I guess next time it's wifi and a separate hotspot. It really does suck because I bought the lte version mainly for the better processor but it was nice not having to carry around ANOTHER piece of equipment that needed charging. I really do want to love this tablet. Maybe someone will trade me for the rooted wifi version and a hotspot. I think I'd be totally down for that.

No need to be snarky, though I do understand where you are coming from. My SM-P900 is rooted and still on the stock ROM so I don't think it is absolutely necessary to have a custom ROM to get the custom features that they bring. It does take a lot more work though and not having the safety net of custom recovery to restore nandroid backup images or wipe dalvic cache is a big deal.

Ha ha yea sorry for the snarky thing . I know the expression well ! My thing is so many people complaining about this tablet so why bother getting the thing!
I bought it knowing all about it it suits me down to the ground for all my personal needs in computing so I don't go around being a mardy sod like so many people on this forum. All the best !
