Software update button won't work gs4... - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hey everyone, I have a little problem. My s4 wont let me check for updates. I hit the little Software Udpate button and it won't even search its almost like a fake button to nowhere. I've tried Google, but havent found anything regarding update button won't work. My S4 was rooted at one time but I messed something up took it to best buy and they put everything back to normal so I don't think the root did anything to cause this. Anyway if anyone has had the same prob. and knows a solution that would be excellent and greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

[Q] <Issue><Please Help> Droid X at Bootloader Screen

I tried installing the Gingerbread update, and when I installed both Parts 1 & 2, then rebooted, my phone only goes to the bootloader screen. Tried using RDS and that, and couldn't find my phone. So I'm stuck.
My phone boots now with a red Moto logo and then goes to the error screen.
My question is, what will Verizon say when they see it? I'm going to take it there later today. I'm under insurance but hacking voids that I believe.
What should I say to get it replaced at no cost?
I was going to say that I put it down, and then when I checked it later it was off, and then when I tried to boot it, this happened, saying I didn't hack it, maybe someone else got it.
Would that work?
Speedy answers would be great.
Thank you so much.
DO NOT TAKE IT TO VERIZON.
Look at the stickies, there is a thread about fixing your phone. You need to find the stock firmware and flash it with RSD.

Also, the "I put it down" excuse will only work if you get a retard. Anyone who knows about Android will know what you did

Did you install the Motorola drivers before attempting an SBF, just Google "Motorola drivers".
Well I have funny news for you guys.
I actually saw your messages after I got back..but thank you for your time.
But the guy...bought the story. He said I was probably recieving a bad update, and was able to fix the phone.
The guy was awesome though, after, he could tell it had ben rooted, and said, "yeah just know that root won't work on Gingerbread", which he installed for me.
So problem solved.
The extent of how lucky I was is amazing.
Well good deal. I'm glad he was cool. You can root, you just have to sbf back to froyo first

If you mess up your phone when you are messing with it, you are responsible for fixing it. Not Verizon.

Not sure why you're posting this now.
And I think i'm gonna stay away from rooting right now.
If you do ever decide you want root get the bootable linux cd with the automated scripts to sbf with. It is totally painless.

don't be sorry...
because you helped ME! i have a sprint galaxy tab and have not done anything with it since i got my gnote, so i have been searcing for how to root this thing...it did update once ota (i think--i have the whole set of tabs, and a captivate--it gets a bit confusing going from one to the other, i just tried using a non existent touch screen on my pc...) so i will try this. how did it go for you? mine is not activated thru sprint, i use it wireless only and cannot wait to get the sprint crap off of it!
You should already be on EF17 Gingerbread. Do this one instead: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1161033&highlight=sprint
It doesn't matter if you are using 3G or not.
As I found out! I was getting frustrated until I realized that everything I found was going in a big loop to nowhere! Thanks for your input, i REALLY appreciate it, and will let you know how I do!
EDIT:
Just a quick question... Do I need to worry about these downloads to my pc as far as malware? I did download some files that came back as a threat with my anti virus - - files that were for ClockworkMod or even a whole kit to root a device (my tab--but i figured out they were for the version before the update that i have now) , but i think it is because it is software that roots android, and not because it is a real threat. I do worry about some of these download sites with the 'download' links all over the place... And only one of them is the file we need (i know how to tell the difference but still I can make a mistake - - My virus protection has indeed saved my ass a few times) any words of advice about this?
thanks again!

No, no need to worry, they are false positive.

Sleep of death problem

Hello guys
About a month and a half ago I got a samsung galaxy note. It's been great so far, the only wrong thing with it is sometimes it doesn't wake up from sleep.
I have to long press the power button for about 10 seconds to restart the phone. I'ts really annoying not knowing if your phone is sleeping or completely off.
I've googled SOD problem but i still don't know if it's faulty hardware or software, should i return the phone or can this be fixed?
I'm running stock gingerbread 2.3.6
Thanks

Thanks i've read the thread and it seems it's a SW issue. Can you confirm this?
I just want to be sure it's SW related not HW related to know if i need to return the phone while i'm still in warranty period.
If you havent tinkered with it bring it back

I once installed a custom ROM, i didn't like so i went back to the original ROM so i guess it shouldn't be a problem.
Are you rooted or anything right now other than completely stock?

Galaxy S4 Vibration Not Working Fix

Story: My mom hates stock touchwiz so I went ahead and installed Cm10.1 on it. She loves it. I own an S2 myself, so its not exactly my phone.(Waiting for the new Nexus or Moto X). Today I realized that the Vibration wasn't working... Thinking it was a software problem, I quickly flashed stock firmware on it to see if that would solve the problem. I was thinking it may have been a broken kernel feature or something. This didnt solve the problem. Now I was getting worried. There may have been a possibility that the kernel could have fried the motor.
This is a $650 dollar phone. She just got it a few weeks ago. I tried different roms, kernels, everything.
I ran into an idea. I once fixed my friends stuck power button my banging it against my table. (funny I know)
Fix: Bang the phone on your knuckles or wrist. Yep. Solved the problem. Figured it was a stuck motor. HOWEVER this did not fully solve the problem. The motor would seize again after a while; Applied same process to fix it. This would only fix it for a while so, In my case, it wasn't a true fix. It may come in handy for those where it was only a stuck motor. Seems like either my vibrate motor is dislodged from the leads or the motor is Semi-DOA.
Anyways, This is a $650 phone. Really? This is Chinese knockoff quality control. There are loads of people having problems with this phone from sound issues to crazy ghosting on the screen. There isn't an excuse. Seems like imma have to set up an RMA or something.
Since your phone is rooted i would suggest to bring it to 2nd hand cellphone shops or repair shop to fix it.... maybe they can fix your problem....

I could do that. Couldnt I use stock firmware and use triangle away?
1. Restore to stock
2. Root
3. Use triangle away
4. Restore to stock again.
?? I should look like I never messed with it?
I would use my warranty while I still have it.
I think you could do that...
1. Backup current rom... use cwm....
2. Download stock rom for your phone
3. Use via odin to install...
4. After install check if your still rooted by using root checker download free from Google play...
5. If your not rooted anymore then your good to go...
* using odin is a complete wipe also root... incase you get stuck on boot loop use your backup to restore... and try reflashing it...
If i helped dont forget to press thanks button...

S4 MF3 i337 S4 Custom

So I have this Galaxy S4 and I just rooted it. Working great, no problems. Although I noticed this when it was booting up, it's showing this text saying "custom" with an unlocked lock but it boots up just fine. Just did a root and froze some samsung, AT&T, and google apps. Anyway to get rid of this?

Did you happen to install any kind of launcher or theme - that can cause this to show. Any kind of phone 'altering' insert by the user such as a launcher, certain xposed framework adjustments, custom APK's installed for performace.
I'd just overlook what you have put on it.
It should not affect the way the phone worka or loads in any way. I had this happen to me a few days ago and posted in one of the help threads my process to remove it. As the above post states though it has something to do with one or more specific things that are part of the rom you are flashing. There is actually a post in here called "can someone try this" or something to that effect detailing a soft fix that seems pretty easy. Do a little searching in the at&t sgs4 forums and you should come up with a few things.

This is correct - I saw that post after this one and gave it and a shot and it removed the Custom Logo on hard reboots for me. Soft boots it still shows but as stated, it doesn't affect anything.
