I downloaded Oct version from XBMC website. It is able to play 720p and 1080p movies without any issue. The most important thing is it doesn`t have any passthrough issue. It can decode DTS/DD and output it into my home theater!!! The only thing that you have to do is to modify its default setting. Please see the following settings
system - settings -audio output
Audio output - HDMI
Speaker Configuration - 5.1
After that, enjoy the impressive audio effects from your speakers.
By the way, you have to own home theater that can support HDMI input/output or buy an hdmi switcher that can separate audio and output via coaxial.

It doesn't work for me. When I play dts movie on ouya I still get hiss noise in my amp. This isn't fixed yet.

It's not the ouya the problem, is your amp. Pass-through means that the digital audio signal is not decoded/processed by ouya but sent directly to the amp or home theater "as is".
If you have hiss noise it's because your amp it's not able to decode the audio. Your ouya is connected directly to your home theater? Or with the TV between it?
Ouya --> TV --> Home Theater
In this case, TV can be the problem.

The OP was speaking about xbmc 13, not the ouya xbmc (are two different things). XBMC 13 it's working fine.
I use DD and DTS passthrough without any problem.
My setup is as follows: Ouya <=> Amp <=> TV
When I start playback I get hissing sound. I don't think it is the amp, because I have two options to solve it and make it work temporarily:
1. Restart amp during playback. After restart DTS sign appears on the amp and it's working ok until I stop or pause
2. Start playback with amp powered off and power it on after playback begun. The result is same as in first case

Same here. Tried 13 monthly and latest nightly and the passthrough issue is still present. Now that the storage issue is getting ironed out, I hope they dedicate some time to getting this fixed. Unfortunately, as more time passes, I start to wonder if they'll just blow it off until Ouya 2.0.
If you take the survey from the Abominable Snowman release notes, the passthrough issue is one of the choices for what they should focus on next. If you're worried, you should go vote on it.

Thanks. Survey submitted!
it is not 100% fixed, but seems to be more convenient here. Only had to do the amp on/off trick once to get the audio decoded properly. On the previous builds and on the current (v12.4) ouya xbmc the trick has to be performed every time the audio stream is interrupted (start/stop). Going to games and the ouya xbmc, playing music or even turning off the amp doesn't seem to affect it anymore.

Most of my DD/DTS 720P movies can play without any problem. But some 1080P movie I met problem. I dont know why because others can play very well. I hope the stable version of xbmc 13 could solve this issue.....
Im on nightly 10 and for now I don't have any issues at all. But may vary by setup and media files.
Gesendet von meinem HTC One X+ mit Tapatalk
I've been running that as well with no problems and I just switched to a new receiver and it works great on it too. No hissing great sound on everything played on it. But I really haven't had any problems with any of the libstagefright versions of xbmc I sideloaded. The only problems I had was the one in the ouya store ironically.
Glad to hear that. Well, I must say one issue stays with the new version. Sometimes during playback xbmc just crashes. But no idea if it's because of low memory, bug in this nightly or even because of me controlling the xbmc with yatse from my phone. Guess I will have to take a deeper look into it.

I must admit I got tired of updating every day so I'm not sure how far we've come..... The last November monthly build was still suffering from the bug that causes massive stutter after around 70-80 minutes. This isn't the Wifi/Lan buffer lag but dropped frames (I play 99% of my files from USB). I remember reading one of the Devs finally understood the cause but I wasn't sure if it was baked into any nightlies yet.
Anyone else have this and if so has it been sorted on any build yet please?

I can't speak to the 70-80 minute bug as I've only just set up my Ouya (last night), but when I installed the nightly (2013-12-08) it worked perfectly for 5 minutes with a 1080p mkv stream. Decoded 5.1 (i had to go into audio settings to set it to 5.1). I didn't use passthrough, as I couldn't figure out how to get it to work.
OUYA -----[HDMI]----> Samsung TV -------[SPDIF]------> Yamaha Receiver
surround has always worked from my STB (same setup as above, but replace OUYA with STB). However with a laptop I've never been able to get surround working, only 2.0. Can't believe this is working with the ($99!!!!!) Ouya and streaming everything over wifi with ease! I may never upgrade beyond this version
Ouya store version is crippled (decode licenses) and not working nearly as well.
had been trying the nightlies but recently went back to v13 alpha-10 monthly.
local 1080p and 720p files don't seem to have any problem. (e.g. stuff from auby.no, big buck bunny, etc.)
networked 720p over SMB/CIFS started out awful (normal audio but stuck video) but eventually stabilized and are now decent (e.g. Venture Bros. season 5 mkv h264+dd5.1) - it did crash/force-quit xbmc once or twice, but was perfectly fine on restart.
haven't tried networked 1080p.
networked SD (xvid or like 480p 264, no problems there at all.)
hmm the default subtitle settings will need some tweaking lol.
For everyone lacking a decent home cinema center or other dts compatible hardware: try spmc
It's basically unofficial xbmc for ouya with full Dolby digital and dts encoding and decoding capabilities.

Word of advice: I have a few mkv's that freeze SPMC (12.4.1) but play just fine in XBMC 12.3.2 - killa.sampla.1080p.mkv is one example.
I poked koying (SPMC author) about that, as it might be a libstagefreight issue.

Keeps Crashing
I have used all of the recommended versions of XBMC on my ouya (sideloaded and Ouya store) and they all keep crashing and going back to main Ouya menu whgen 10-15 minutes into a movie. Its begins with 630MB of Ram available but after 10 mins of usage its at 65MB of ram.
I have followed all instructions laid out in the XBMC posts on here but still having problems. Any ideas??

you can easily watch highly quality Netflix movies plus control all of your PC with the app called

Thanks,
Can u rewind or fast forward?

It is like having your computer desktop on your tab. The problem I have is there is no sound. Check out the devs website faq.. Alot of audio problems. Support sucks imo. The desktop msnagement part works well. I am trying 14 day free trial of playon. It works with netflix, hulu and more.
Sent from my SCH-I500
Audio issues seems to be common there. I have one Win7 computer that has no audio issues with Splashtop.
And another with XP that's normally connected to a tv via HDMI. I get no audio from it in Splashtop unless I plug something into the front speaker/headphone jack. It doesn't even have to be speakers or headphones, just plug in a plug that's not connected to anything, as long as the Realtek software detects it and I select "speakers", I get audio in Splashtop.
Btw, this is a good workaround for Hulu also, if the solution in here doesn't work for you and you don't want to root the 10.1.
Have any of you tried playon it works well for hulu Netflix and streaming any file to your devices my only compliant is u can't skip around at all.
Playon is definetly the better option. Splashtop is good if youre on your own network or have a superb internet connection at both locations. Otherwise play on works a hundred times better due to the compression it uses.

Huh, I didn't even realized Playon app was working. I've had it installed on my htpc for a while, but when I tried the Playon app on my tablet, screen for hulu shows don't have a video to click. CBS shows had a tiny video on top that I can click to go full screen, but hulu shows didn't. Turns out that even without that small video, I can still click that spot and go to a full screen video. That's great, I bought playon before it went subscription.
Yes you can rewind and fast forward.
There is no sound issue if you go to splashtop website. The sound thing is not a issue its a small easy setting that you have to do on your PC. The support for this setting is very easy and step by step with pictures. Please chk that out.
Hey even I don't have any sound issues ... this is one of the best apps for the tablet currently. No performance issue or anything for me, it's now become a android/windows dual tablet
Sent from my GT-P7510 using Tapatalk
I'm new so I can't post links yet here, but Splashtop support has a workaround that involves changing audio selections and a loopback cable. "There is a special trick to work around the no sound issue on xp. You can loop back headphone out to audio-line-in by an audio cable like this: (i.e. on a notebook, plug in both holes of "headphone" and "microphone")
Also note that for XP, the checkbox for "mute this computer" should be unchecked.
Splashtop is great unless you want to use it to connect to a headless (no monitor) system, then it doesn't work at all. I wanted to use it to connect to my headless Mac Mini for streaming Netflix and stuff, but no go unfortunately.
Heh, Splashtop is awesome, I'm getting LIVE TV on my tablet. I realized that maybe it could stream SageTV (DVR) from my server, I just had to tweak the video in Sagetv from overlay to vmr9 and use the default audio. Non HD streams perfectly, HD isn't quite as smooth but watchable. Here's a couple of pics, one from the today's TDF on Versus non HD channel and another from their HD channel:
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/69/img013a.jpg/

Btw, SageTV isn't available anymore. The company was bought by Google last month so maybe we'll be seeing some cool stuff them on Android or Google TV.
I have run into an issue when playing video content. Video plays back just fine, but every so often the audio will cut out for about a second or two. Since this started I tried doing a factory reset and this seems to have helped a little, but I still get the occasional drop out. I have noticed this within the youtube, plex, and hulu apps. I don't believe this to be a bandwidth/wifi issue as it is running on my 5GHz band and is at most six feet away from the router.
I have also tried playing back the same content on my chromecast and I run into no issues at all.
I am considering doing a complete factory restore with the img available through google.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Notice it occasionally with plex. I have restored factory image already, did not make any difference for me.
Same issue here, except that I'm connected via 802.11ac instead of just 5GHz. Factory reset didn't do any good, nor did switching any of the streaming quality settings (within reason) or Direct Play/Direct Stream options in the Plex app. My Chromecast is 6" away from the Nexus Player (both of which are maybe 12' from my router) and is only using 802.11n, yet has no issues with any content/quality. Not a good thing! Hopefully a software update can fix it, and soon.

I guess I forgot to mention. I actually am using 802.11ac across my 5GHz band. Still having issues, but my chromecast has none. I saw there is a new factory image (LRX21V) for the player so I am going to try to restore to it today and see if this helps.
Edit: I updated to latest version, still getting the same issue. Hopefully that can be addressed in a future update. I never would have thought that my chromecast would outperform my Nexus Player, but yet here we are.
Ah, okay - I gotcha. I had thought 802.11ac used both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands at the same time, so I thought when you specified 5GHz it meant you were just using 802.11n. I looked it up again and see that isn't the case. Doesn't really matter I guess, since if our Chromecasts are doing fine on 2.4GHz, the NP should have an even better connection regardless.
Sucks that even the latest software doesn't fix it I hope they iron it out soon, because a media player whose audio drops out on a regular basis is not a particularly good one. Might as well go with a Roku.

Yea, sadly I didn't think it would be a networking issue. Hopefully we can get a new build pushed that will fully address this issue.
Mine drops pretty regularly in all apps. It's about once every 30 seconds. I have a 20ft optical cable coming out of my TV and I thought maybe there was some degradation going that far in optical. My other players don't have the problem though. I will try output to just TV and see if that still does it.
Maybe we have to RMA?
I have the same issue. It is in every app. I'm on my second Nexus Player. Both have audio drop out and sometimes i cannot get any sound at all.
I have the same issue with all apps. I RMA'd my first Nexus Player and got a new one; the new one has the same audio drop out issue. Except the new one also reboots pretty much once every couple minutes, too. :-/
I think this is some sort of HDMI connectivity issue. The issue becomes better or worse depending on the HDMI cable I use and the TV or receiver I plug it into on the other end. However, I tried 4 HDMI cables, and none was able to completely stop the audio drop out problem when connected between the Nexus Player and my receiver. The frequency is about once every minute or so and the receiver seems report no audio signal at these occurrences.
Multiple other devices have no issue with the same HDMI ports on my TV and receiver, including multiple chromecasts (which output great un-interrupted surround sound).
I actually like the AndroidTV OS, games etc., but the hardware problems are killing me.
Hopefully this isn't a hardware issue. I am praying that this will be fixed through a firmware update.
are you guys running hdmi through a receiver? I've had my player for about 2 weeks connected directly to my tv in the bedroom with no audio drop issues (at least non that I noticed). I put it in the living room lat night and connected to an HDMI input in my receiver and noticed the audio drops right away. About every 10-15 seconds. I messed with the plex stream settings and tried different apps and all did the same thing. connected to an HDMI input direct to my living room tv and watched an entire movie without issue. I pulled the HDMI cable from my bedroom tv and ran the player through it to my receiver. Audio drops are less frequent but still happening. Right now it seems like my receiver is the common factor in these audio drops. This is very disappointing as I was hoping to order another player to replace my HTPC in the living room. The streaming is great and high quality but the audio issue is a killer.
Same issue. Audio started disappearing in YouTube after a few minutes of play.
This is my second Nexus Player. Had to RMA the first one as I was having issues with the remote voice recognition.
Hate being a beta tester. Google should have done beta testing before releasing this commercially.

Nope. Mine is connected directly to the TV. It's a good quality 4' HDMI cable, which I had never had problems with.

So I didn't even think to try running directly to my TV until you mentioned it. But now that I am I haven't noticed any audio drops. I am going to keep testing and I'll report back if I notice anything.
Seems very odd that the receiver would cause this issue.
It seems to be a combination of the cable and receiver for me. I tested a few of my cables and all had drops but some less frequent then others. However I did find one that seemed less prone. On first connection there were no drops after 30-40 min and I thought all was well. I disconnected the player to move it to its new home and reconnected the cable and noticed drops about every 2-3 min. disconnected the cable and reconnected, wiggled the cable a bit and secured the connections, did a dance with chicken bones and tried again. I now get no audio drops when watching video or playing games. I have noticed audio drops when clicking through menus though. The whole thing seems very random but I'll take this for now.
RMA until you get one that works.
Yup - had the same issue with the one I got from the first batch of orders. I tried factory reset, images, etc. No luck - I RMA'd it, got a replacement and no audio cut-out issues now. Same setup, configuration, etc.
- Shane
So after testing for a few days I haven't had any more audio dropout since switching from my receiver to directly into my TV. I still don't understand why this would make a difference, but it does seem to have fixed my issue.
I RMAd mine and should get the replacement today. I'll see how the new one does.
FWIW, still waiting on my replacement but I decided to try moving the NP to the input on my XBox One and see what happens. After 2 hours of testing I did not notice any audio drops when running through the XBOne to my receiver. This may end up being my solution in the end. The input was unused anyway and now I can run something new through the receiver's now empty input.
So the replacement came in. Hooked it direct to the receiver and right away I noticed audio drops. However, once i had it setup and some apps installed I have it a test. Played a few youtube vids, pandora, plex vids. No audio drops while playing anything. moved the player around. Even disconnected and reconnected the hdmi cable a few times. Still no audio drops while any media is playing. This is good. I did notice audio drop out while moving through menus. Particularly if i stopped moving the cursor for a second or 2, the next click produced no audio, but if i moved the cursor around in rapid succession there are no audio drops. It seems that as long as there's a steady stream of audio coming from the player I see no audio issues. I will give it a better test run later tonight and watch a few shows on Plex and see how it does.
Hi,
I have an appleTV and an Amazon Fire Stick, and the Nexus Player. All 3 are routed through my Yamaha RX-v3900 amp and then to the TV.
The AppleTV and the Amazon Fire stick both display netflix without issue. The Nexus displays all menus, but when you start playing content, the screen goes blank and you only get audio.
If I connect the Nexus directly to the TV, it plays fine.
I suspect this is an hdcp issue. I've called Google's support line. They suggested unplugging the Nexus, unplugging the amp, unplugging the TV. None of these steps worked. Although, unplugging the nexus caused Netflix not to be able to connect to it's servers, and the app had to be uninstalled and re-installed to get back the menu level.
Anybody else seeing this? Any thoughts on how to proceed?
Thanks,
Jim

Not that this is all that practical but maybe swap out the amp for an hdcp compliant one? (I think that is a thing since it's passing through hdcp signals)
the netflix app for the player has HORRID HDCP compliance.. i returned mine because of this.. the app is just screwed if you dont have a very simplistic setup.. anything at all between the tv and the player will cause it to not function correctly.

This amp is HDCP compliant. There is a bug in the Way nexus player handles HDCP with certain amps.
Yeah, the Amazon firestick and AppleTV both play through the Yamaha 3900 without HDCP issues, so the problem is with the Nexus player, or at least the Netflix implementation on the Nexus player. I'm also back to having resolution issues. Compared to both the fireTV and the AppleTV, the Nexus Player looks like crap.
I have no problem using the NP with my pioneer amp... Have you tried different inputs on the amp or different cables?

I've had the exact same issue, it's the length of the HDMI cables. I use a 5 to 1 switch. Once I removed the Nexus Player and plugged it directly into the TV (3ft HDMI cable), it worked perfectly. My Logitech Revue had no issues, my raspberry pi and Chromecast also don't have any challenges. Seems the opamps for the NP might be a little weak (speculating).
d
Same exact issue here.
Receiver: Yamaha RX-V675
-Firmware 1.6 (up to date)
Netflix plays audio but no picture, youtube plays but is choppy.
TV shows resolution as 576p.
Alternate thread describing issue.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-player/help/low-resolution-receiver-t2940767
None of these issues are apparent when the player is connected directly to the tv.
Unfortunately this isn't a very good work around for me as my tv's digital audio out doesn't seems to perform well with my receiver. (cheap tv, seiki)
The issue seems isolated to the Nexus player as Chromecast and roku work perfectly through receiver. (Guess i won't be replacing them both with this device as soon as i hoped)
Sounds like hdcp, hopefully google pushes an update or a patch is discovered soon.

Excellent summary, BUT we can also add Google Movies & TV to the list. I get the exact same symptoms using a hdmi switch as I do with Netflix. Again, only direct connect works, all other devices (Chromecast, Raspberry Pi, Google TV, PS3) I run work just fine (even with Netflix & G Movie&TV.
Happy New Year!!

I assume you all are still experiencing this issue? I just purchased a NP and have the same issues with both Netflix and Google Play Movies. However, YouTube and Hulu play just fine. I have short high speed HDMI cables (very good quality ones) . I use a Denon 2000 receiver. Chromecast and ATV works well. I can't connect directly to the TV as a work around (that's another story)

I assume you all are still experiencing this issue? I just purchased a NP and have the same issues with both Netflix and Google Play Movies. However, YouTube and Hulu play just fine. I figured out my issue. It was my directv box causing the issue. For some reason, it triggered the hdcp security on it for copy protected channels like hbo and showtime. It wouldn't let me play anything on those channels. The directv box was connected to the same receiver as the Nexus player. So, I reset the directv box and I was able to see my hbo and showtime TV again. When I tried to view videos on the NP via Google Play Movies and Netflix, it was working fine again ☺

bummer... I pulled power on everything. Then left the directv box off and powered everything up. Still can't get netflix to show a picture on the nexus player.

That didn't work for me either. I had to actually hit the reset button on the directv box (the red reset button). Try that

Ok - did the reset button on the Directv, replaced all cables with shorter cables. Nada.
I finally routed the Nexus Player directly to the TV (works), then put a toslink opitcal out from the TV to the amp. Seems to be working, but it makes setting up to watch Android TV a PITA.
I wish they would fix the Nexus Player, but this is a decent work around.
Working now!
Looks like a recent update fixed this for me! Decided to try it today after noticing there was a new plex (not plex pass) app and realized that I hadn't tried through my receiver in a while. Connected it back up to my yamaha receiver and to my surprise, everything is working great! Netflix, google movies and the plex app connected through my receiver, audio AND video coming through as expected. Even the GUI Menu is showing the proper 1080p resolution.
Looks like I may finally be able to replace my roku/chromecast with the nexus.
Your mileage may vary but check your nexus to make sure it's up to date and give it another go!
Note: I am fairly confident an update was the fix as it was the only change to my setup. Simply plugged it in with the same cables/connections as my previous testing.
Good to hear! I was hoping for more stability with Netflix on the NP before I pull the trigger.
How about Dolby Digital/5.1 surround from Netflix? I read previously it only outputs in 2.0 stereo.
Thanks!

latest update fixed my netflix issue as well....
I now can watch netflix going through my Yamaha amp. Yeah!
Running into an odd issue where my Nexus Player (latest stable 5.1.1 release IIRC) will instantly lose the HDMI connection when I try playing a movie through Google Play Movies & TV. The weird thing is, the moment I press the back button to go back to the app's menu, it reconnects.
I'm using this HDMI switch (name printed here since I can't link to outside links): Kinivo 501BN Premium 5 port High speed HDMI switch with IR wireless remote and AC Power adapter - supports 3D, 1080p
Not sure if because I'm using this HDMI switch that it's causing the issue. I can watch YouTube and other stuff fine, and my Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV both play movies without an issue.
Having the Same Problem
I am having the same problem. Have you tried to bypass the switch?
It sounds to me like it's some sort of DRM which takes effect when the movie playback begins and is triggered because of the HDMI switch in between your Nexus Player and TV. A direct HDMI cable test is the only way to know for sure.
When I first got my switch and connected to my dvr I could not fast forward without the screen going black.
I plugged my nexus player straight into an hdmi port and the movies worked.

Yeah, that was my thought.
Sadly, though, I don't really have the space to give one of my three spots just to the Nexus when my other streaming devices work as intended, so I'll just have to ignore using that app until there's a fix down the road, if there's one.
Hi all,
Is anyone else experiencing stutter on their NP no matter where you play videos. Local memory or over network, for me is the same. I tried with 1080p and 720p and both stutter like crazy, upon to an unwatchable point for high bitrate mkvs.
I reflashed 511 via fastboot erasing userdata but no luck, same annoying stutter.
Any idea/suggestion is appreciated.
Thank you
I tried playing MKVs over network with Kodi, but they stutter incredibly bad. I don't think the support for MKV is there, but I could be wrong. Sticking with MP4 for now.
The OP doesn't provide any info about setup or apps tested.
But FWIW, all MKVs that I've tried - 720p, 1080p, inc. 10-bit encodes - have worked flawlessly on Kodi, whether locally or over network (smb or DLNA, WiFi AC/5Ghz).
So you need to isolate your problem to your setup. You could start by enabling the Codec Info OSD in Kodi ('c' key on a keyboard, can be remapped to e.g. remote back button) to see what's happening with your currently playing videos.
You could play with the hardware decoder settings in Kodi's System config to see if toggling any of the options might help. Also try different apps, of course. There are lots of possible variables really ... isolating the problem is the key.
I have not had issues with playing 720p or 1080p H264 / x264 MKV files with Kodi over 5 GHz wireless AC. I usually go through an SMB server to stream the files from another PC on my LAN or the USB drive plugged in to my router. Which video codecs are your files encoded in and how high are the average bitrates of those files?
It would be good to know if OP is using Kodi or a different player..
Hi All, sorry for the delay, I think I managed to track the cause of my stutter. First of all, to answer your question, it is happening with all players, including Kodi.
After some more testing, I came to the conclusion that it is related to the framerate output that is not in sync with my TV refresh rate. I have a Samsung that goes to 60Hz max, and video sources at 24fps stutter/judder like hell. I cannot watch any 24fps movies no matter their format. I tested with 60fps content and all was playing fine.
Really not sure why AndroidTV/Nexus Player does not allow automatic framerate switching, but watching anything at 24fps is basically impossible for me. TVHZ app allows me to go to 50 or 60 Hz, but I read this bug is fixed in M dev preview. Did not tried it yet.
Kodi is supposed to be able to auto switch framerate, at least in one of their build (for Shield if I recall correctly), but even if I have the option enabled in the menu, video playback is still stuck at 60Hz.
Does anyone know if auto framerate switching is going to be added in 6.0 ?
Thank you
Well, there's nothing unusual about playing 24fps sources on a 60Hz TV, and you shouldn't be seeing such severe juddering even with 3:2. This forum would be full of complaints otherwise, since 24fps sources are so common.
Are you able to test with another TV than your Samsung, perhaps? And enable the Codec Info OSD in Kodi to see if that reveals anything. I'd also try toggling the "Sync playback to display" option in System settings. For comparison: http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=219796

Yes, that's one of the new features available in Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

What about other players? Kodi made this possible via their internal player, not Android's as far as I know.
@Ladduro, I'm not sure what you mean by Android's "internal" video player or if there even is such a thing on the Nexus Player. If other popular apps like MX Player and VLC support auto frame rate switching in the future, then you'll have more playback options beyond Kodi.
I've been playing plenty of 24fps sources on my 60Hz TV without the pulldown causing an unwatchable judder as decribed by the OP. I still think he's misdiagnosing the problem, but I guess once an idea gets in your head it's hard to shift it.
Maybe you cannot see the judder. I can, and it is bothering me a lot.
Is there no way to activate the "Sync playback to display" option for the NP? A different Kernel maybe?

Mine has always stuttered. I have never found a solution. I watched a google play movie just last weekend and I noticed it. My wife and kids don't notice it but I sure do. I've tried wired and wireless connections and it doesn't make a difference. And I don't have barebone internet speeds. Debating RMAing it since it is from an early batch to see if the newer ones work better.
