[Q] Bought a new note 3 but it was already rooted?? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey i bought a new note 3 n9005 but when i took it him and played with it a bit i noticed it has Super user installed....that means my phone is rooted already?so my phone was used???and also i didn't get original charger should i return it back to shop and ask why my device is already rooted?

anyone knows?

looks like you got a used device! from where are you?
in germany and austria we are "allowed by law" to return devices bought online for the next 7 (austria) to 10 (germany) working days without any reason! especially small shops then have to sell the devices again, of course...
i personally wouldn't accept this, go back to your shop and ask for a brand new phone!

Yeah it is not supposed to have SuperSU installed in factory condition. You bought a phone that has been used / tampered with.
I would go back to the store, demand a new device and a discount and then I would buy my wife something nice with the money I saved. If you don't have a wife or girlfriend, you can just buy yourself something.
Or me.

Off course return to shop, your phone is not new set.
No new phone came with SuperSU.

Yeah I experienced that before when I bought a phone from a small mobile shop, cause I was a nab iPhone user I thought it was OK as I was clueless with Android until I decided to unroot it then the phone suddenly didn't accept any Sim card. Don't take the risk, get your money back from these unhonest thief's.

Did you go to download mode and check to see if warranty void is 0x1?
Either way, this is not a new device but a returned or refurbished device.... I'd want a new one....

Considering supersu is a third party app this is HIGHLY unlikely....

Return it and demand a NEW Note 3 in a sealed box.
/CK

Some countries have the insane policy of accepting back a used device and selling it as new withing the first few days after purchase. We call it 'screwing over your customers and abusing their trust.'
This is the result.
Go back to the shop and demand a new one in a sealed box.
There's a reason Samsung put a sealed sticker over the opening of the box. If the box doesnt come with that sticker untouched, do not accept the device. (it's the 3 by 2cm one that says 'if seal is broken, blablabla').

This may sound dumb but are you certain the app didn't automatically download after you restored your account and settings?

One way to check is boot into download mode and see if Knox is 0x1 chances are the guy rooted it and realised he triggered Knox so he returned it

A story of a rooted phone, sent for repairs.

Dear Readers,
I am about to tell you my story of myself a current Galaxy Note user and the unfortunate episode when my phone had problems. I have been a long time user of xda, but a first time poster of this wonderful forum.
First of all I want to tell you I currently reside in Australia, Sydney and I am a Vodafone customer. I have been using this phone for about 6 months without any problems whatsoever, until a couple of weeks ago my phone started to inconsistently charge. At first I thought it was a cable issue, so I isolated the problem with a different cable and it didn't work. Fear and doubt crept into my mind for the next couple of days, if I should return the phone to Vodafone for repairs because as you may have guessed, my phone is rooted with a custom rom called, "AllianceROM_N7000_ICS_v2.1" with the wonderful "SpeedMod Kernel".
I searched through google and I found out that I wasn't the only person to have this problem with this charging issue. From further research I also found out that some people have claimed that sending a rooted phone into repairs will void your phones warranty, and some other people say that it won't void your warranty. Rather confused with this conflicting information, what other better way to confirm this issue than to call up Samsungs service centre. When I asked, the gentlemen on the other end just simply answered, "Yes".
So with this new information, I finally decided to unroot my phone and installed a stock official rom called N7000BDULR5_N7000BVAULR4_VAU. But before I did all this, from further research through XDA's forums I found out that I needed to reset my Binary count with Triangle Away by Chainfire. But with the issue of the phone not charging properly, it did not help with the issue of unrooting the phone, because the battery was constantly flat. After painstaking hours I finally unrooted my phone.
As I came home after handing my phone into Vodafone, a thought crept into my mind. Will they void my warranty, if I did not have the bloatware in which Vodafone has pre-installed into the phone? Because the stock rom in which I installed did not carry the bloatware.
Through the following week of praying that they will not void my warranty because of this issue, I got a message from Vodafone to pick up my phone. I called Vodafone customer repair centre and they told me that they have fixed the issue by replacing the micro usb connector which the pins was dislodged and also the UNIT-SUB PBA- which is the motherboard. Vodafone told me that this is a rare case in which the both of these hardware issues occur in the Galaxy note. Phew..
As of right now I am charging my phone without any problems so far. I will keep you guys updated if I have any other further issues with the repairs done on my phone.
I'm in Malaysia and I had the similar problem with you as well.
Initially I sent in my phone with the stock ROM but I forgot to reset the binary count and the 3rd party service center voided my warranty.
I took back my phone and installed "triangle away" by chainfire which reset my custom binary count and this time I sent it in to Samsung for a warranty claim and after the next day. They called me to collect my phone and my mother board + micro usb was replaced.
I did a little research myself and I've came to this conclusion and incompatible external battery packs messed up the system as I never had an issue with my phone charging till I bought myself a cheap external batter pack charger which then i guess messed up my board.
conclusion for me:
invest in a proper external batter pack which is compatible with the N7000 battery.
Congrats on getting your phone repaired without getting caught. Same thing had happened to me when I gave my phone to ssc. I had unrooted and used triangle away but unfortunately forgot to uninstall it. My phone was repaired and it still had triangle away in it. I guess they don't look into the phone that closely.

the hardware is faulty, the pins don't last, apparently it's even a known issue at Samsung.. This repair has nothing to do with firmware. The phone boots, it runs, it can have different firmwares flashed to it, the issue is purely a hardware issue and so the warranty should cover the repair even with the custom binary... i dont like the loophole use by the warranty center when, as with this guy, the user clearly hasn't damaged the device... That would just be wrong.

Dear Mr TopOfNewYork,
You maybe correct about the correlation with software Vs hardware issue that may render your phone having problems. But no legal terms and conditions will release the manufacturer of any legal liabilities with the products being offered to the public. (In Australia it is called the Australian Consumer Law 2010, Please check with your local countries consumer protectionism law.)
On another note, the phone has a random automatic reboot issue at random times, and as of now wont even boot to Touchwiz UI. The only way I can use the phone is to directly charge the phone, while using it. I have had the phone for two days from the date of it was returned to me, and I have complained (in a logical, non violent yelling manner) to Vodafone and they have agreed to send me a new Samsung Galaxy S3 16gb White.
I am absolutely satisfied to receive a new phone, and will update the situation about the new phone on the S3 forum.
Thank you for reading and have a happy and prosperous year.
Glad to know you got your problem solved.

Well I just sent my Note 2 in and it took the service center 2 weeks to enter my phone...during that time Samsung cancelled my claim because the service centre in Quebec didn't enter it in time.
I called Samsung and they called the center and set them straight and now I just got a reply that my phone, while rooted, has never had a custom ROM on it and never had anything but stock...I rooted it only to kill the rogers bloatware that I could not uninstall.
I just got a reply and they told me the repair will cost $672 to repair the screen due to it being rooted....wtf
Reason it was sent in was in woke up, unplugged my phone from charging and noticed a stuck red dead pixel on the screen...wasn't there the night before....so how does root on a stock phone cause an hardware issue....time to call and complain to Samsung.
This is unreal....
I too had the problem! First I thought it was lint, etc, so I prodded etc. It would charge for5 min then stop.
In the end I got a new daughter board forĀ£10 with the USB socket, new mix and antenna. Took less than ten mins to fit. It's been like new since.
I've the same issue on my Kindle HD, but that's another tale........
Box 13.
I unrooted my phone before giving it to the "Samsung" repair shop, which in my town is just a dodgy phone shop with a big Samsung sticker on the window. I got it back the next day with an untested bad ROM update so the keyboard just typed nonsense.
In the end I spent ages fixing the damage they caused and never got to the bottom of the original issue.

Never had to warranty repair any of my Samsung devices until now...hope I never have to again as they suck!
Respect lost.
I had a rooted N7000 go into Samsung service with a hardware & a software issue & both issues were sorted under warranty for free & no mention of it being rooted, (it came back unrooted).

I had unrooted device with blue hotpixel, these dumbasses first tear it down, then realized the receipt is not enough for proof so they want an invoice from seller stating where he got phones from. And because seller was a retard he didn't send me it in time, they reassembled the phone and sent it back (leaving a hair between frame and screen - proves that it was disassembled) I wonder for what they got grade A from Samsung...
From the same private service center, once they tried to prove that non-rooted and untouched phone was flashed (it was aftermath of failed Kies/Odin update), intervention in Samsung Poland helped, they sent a new phone.
In any case of imbeciles at service senter, contact Samsung, their people usually have more knowledge and are willing to help

Phones are under warranty by the date of manufactur ... you don't need reciepts or anything, it doesn't matter if its been sold to ten different people with no reciepts its still under Samsung Warranty.

Unfortunately not in Poland, they still require at least receipt, but new internal procedures of service center require shop's invoice, especially since they see phone was bought in service/second hand shop (still it was brand new, untouched etc.), maybe they're just too dum dum to handle their internal stuff or are afraid it was serviced somewhere else, I must speak with Sammy about this

Why Samsung would tell you that I have no idea.
Samsung here in Canada asked for a copy of my receipt to be faxed within 5 days or the claim would be void.

Personally, I would strongly suggest to find authorised local service centres from the Samsung website of one's respective country/region. Alternatively, one could either call or send an e-mail to the customer support of one's respective country/region to enquire about the details of authorised local service centres.
For illustrative purpose, I would find the Samsung website for my country/region from, http://www.samsung.com/uk/function/ipredirection/ipredirectionLocalList.do, and I would then proceed to find authorised local service centres by using the Find Service Locations found under the Support menu.

OK, I've been looking at a few countries warranty wording & yes it does say "Original purchase reciept" required for repairs so strange as it sounds they abide by different rules depending where you live.
I've not been asked for anything other than my personal details & address for collection. Yes that's right Samsung (I'm in UK) arrange to collect the phone & then deliver it back afterwards without any proof of purchase or reciepts. I have friends who have done the same & several of these phones including mine were bought secondhand but still in warranty (2yrs on some phones).
I want to share my warranty claim experience too (indonesia):
1. Galaxy S3, broken camera hardware. Clear binary, Flashed stock JB, sent to SSC. Asked for original purchase receipt, didn't have it. So i asked her to check the phone by serial number, warranty granted, fixed in 3 days and whooaa got extra 3 month warranty. I bought it when S3 launching event at June 12, extended to 31 sept 2013
2. Broke my Galaxy Nexus usb ports pin so usb cord can't plug properly and sometimes not detected in PC. I was too lazy to flash stock.. So with unlocked bootloader & Paranoid Android rom installed i went to same SSC, haha asked again for receipt and i didn't have it also. Granted, and got it fixed less than 1 hour

[Q] Bought a "new" note 3 from ebay...

Supposedly untouched brand new in box "unlocked". When I went to give it the ol rootaroo found the knox at 0x1. So here is my question.
Other than screwing me out of the warranty, what other problems will this cause me?
It's a tmobile. What happens when kit kat comes along, or any other update, am I going to be able to update? As of now, there are no roms, so I am stuck with what samsung sends down the pike and if I cant even get that then what good is the phone. I put in an open case, but if it's not going to screw me up too bad, I might just keep it. However, at 649, for another 50 I can buy one straight from tmobile. Should I return it?
Regards,
J

Aside from the warranty which you have mentioned, Not a lot else except KNOX functions (which unless you use for company purposes is useless to the every day user 99% of the time) -
As for returning it, it's up to you, if you feel you have been tricked into buying a phone with no warranty and mis sold, then return it
It was misrepresented as "new" so you do have an option to return. Hopefully you paid via paypal or a secure way as I wouldn't trust them to return the monies voluntarily.

And don't buy electrical things at eBay unless you want to take risk.
A friend recently bought what was supposed to be a used, unlocked AT&T S3 on Amazon, to use on T-Mobile. When she got it I discovered that it is actually a T-Mobile S3. She had problems getting any data connection on it and after speaking with T-Mobile tech support for a few days they ran her IMEI and said they would honor the warranty, she explained that she bought it from a 3rd party and that they said that it doesn't have a warranty but the tech said not to worry, it is covered by the manufacturer. T-Mobile is currently sending her another S3 at no cost.

So are you saying that should updates come, such as kit kat, I will have no problems getting said updates?
I just want to make sure the phone isn't locked out from updates, won't care if I ever get roms.....
Yeah you'll get updates, if you're rooted you won't get them via OTA though. You'll have to use KIES or flash via ODIN. Not really a massive task tbh

.... and you'll probably get those updates much faster here on XDA than you will via OTA updates anyway!

Warranty Process

Okay, so I have a Galaxy S4 from AT&T purchased around September 2013 at a Best Buy. I originally bought this phone off Craigslist, but the guy did not give me any documents besides the box and accessories. So no receipt. I read on XDA people claiming warranty and asking about how to unroot. I'm not rooted or anything, I am basically using this phone like how Samsung and AT&T intended it. My question is, how does one go about getting it repaired or replaced for warranty? I know from Apple you can walk into a store and walk out with a replacement refurbished phone. Am I supposed to just call up Samsung and say I need a second-hand phone repaired? I mean I can't really call AT&T because this phone is technically with a different account, correct? And Best Buy didn't sell the black tie program with this phone, so no use calling them.
Thanks in advance. (btw, my phone isn't broken, I am just asking for future reference.)

Very easy, just go to the samsung website and chat with an adviser if you have a problem. They will walk you through general troubleshooting and then if that doesn't fix it, you can send it on for repairs.
I bought a used GS4 off CL and sold it to a guy. Didn't test out the camera but he told me camera did not work. After troubleshooting and researching online, it appeared to be a hardware problem. Logged on, they checked the serial number and saw that it was manufactured in Jun of this year, so still under warranty. They printed a 2 day shipping label for me, repair took about 3-4 days, then they sent it back working UPS 2 day!
awesome. not as convenient as apple, but if its that easy, cool thanks.

[Q] New Phone, Device Status: Custom

I purchased the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 III N900 32gb Black Factory Unlocked Android Cell Phone from Amazon. The store was SHOPEBEST. (cant post links yet)
Got it, had the IMEI tag removed from the box for some reason dunno why.
Everything looks brand spanking new, got a new sim from AT&T, setup install some apps then I try to run update got the device is modified message. Wiped cache partition, restarted numerous times, never had an SD card in but i did try to put an old one in and remove it etc.
Still shows up as CUSTOM.
In odin download mode it shows:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SM-N900
CURRENT BINARY: Custom
SYSTEM STATUS: Custom
WARRANTY BIT: 1
I'm new to android so i have very little knowledge about android systems, rooting or roms or anything only the stuff i learned from hours of reading.
My question is if this phone is new WHY is it showing custom and the warranty showing 1 meaning void right out of the box? Is there anyway i can go back to stock and get the warranty back to 0?
Thanks for your time and help.
I would hazard an opinion the phone is not brand new or wasn't factory unlocked? I thought I saw something about some shop opening brand new phones, unlocking them and selling as factory unlocked. I guess they tripped flag unlocking it? Strange there was no IMEI on the box, maybe the phone IMEI and box didn't match?

I didn't even notice at first but the sticker is /was removed from the box. Had the caution sealed package sticker on it though. I contacted them already. There's no way this phone is brand new with the odin mode showing that.
I would return it, just for warranty sake. Also I don't think you can do OTA updates if it's custom. And if it's rooted already, it could have virus or some other stuff on it as well.
Sorry to hear that you got scammed. Though there is no way to reset the warrannty bit counter back to Ero. But you may check if you had a Super SU app in your app drawee. If it there that means your phone is rooted. So yoi can try Triangle away app it might help im not sure if it works then reflash a stock rom and do a fulk factory reset and wipe the cash partition.

Don't bother with Triangle-Away. It won't reset Knox back to 0x0.
Knox seems tripped.
You def need to return this.
If it's this obvious that it wasn't unlocked by the manufacturer but instead has been modified by the reseller you might also want to shoot Amazon an email at the reports form hereabouts: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/reports/contact-us
Sometimes it helps to be specific... I find that just returning the item solves my own problem but then leaves the seller free to cause problems for others. And Amazon has from my own experience been really awesome and helpful with this stuff. I reported a seller who sold me a red-screened Kindle Fire 2 and I actually got to speak to a human being. In general I find they have some of the best support imaginable.

Yeah I'm returning it first thing Monday. I find it funny how the seller didn't want any problems. They told me to just return the phone for a full refund even though i used it for 3 days. They charge a restock fee for returns but i told them im not paying any restocking fee and they still said return it. They know what they did.

You'll find this amusing but I still prefer my old Galaxy Nexus over the Nexus 5. It may not have ran 4.4.2 perfectly but man... User-replaceable battery, amazing kernel mods, none of the weird bugs I encountered with the Nexus 5, rock solid GPS, and it took SD Cards.
I liked the Nexus 4 just fine, but man the 5 really burnt me on the Nexus line. I had a lot of problems with it. So did my coworker with his. Ended up returning both.

the sold you a repaired phone..... seems like the LCD broke and they bought a LCD from ebay and swap the board.......
the FULL LCD from ebay does not include IMEI sticker....... and some times its difficult to remove the original sticker....
I know this because I Note 3 fell and the screen broke... I bought a Black complete Note 3 without the logic board and I was good again...
My Phone was originally white....... I was able to transfer the IMEI sticker though....

it would have been better if the the knox was not tripped.... it depend how much you paid if its over 500 return it....

Best thing I could tell you, since asking what's the best phone is like asking what's the best ROM, is go to your local carrier stores like ATT and T-Mobile, Sprint, etc... And just try out phones in your hand. Don't worry too much about specs these days. If it's running at least Android 4.2 with a 1Ghz processor it will make calls, end texts, and play cat videos. Even without, it should still.
If you want the absolute most epic and powerful phone you're already holding it as far as I know. The Note 3 not only has premiere specs but USB 3, support for something ridiculous like another 64 gigs or 128 gigs of CLASS 10 MicroSD goodness...And a stylus, which is something I've genuinely missed ever since the old WinMo 6.5 days when you could either choose the multitouch mod or the overclock mod but not both.
Really though, your best is just go to stores and see what feels best especially since you seem to be the kind of person for whom the feel of the phone in your hand and how it carries is important. You can always then walk out of the store, go on someplace like Swappa, and find the phone at a cheaper price and probably unlocked.

[Q] N900W8 software problems

i had a thread in generals, but figured it was the wrong place so i moved the post to here. c/p from OP
Hi all, I'm new to XDA so hopefully someone can help me. I purchased a brand new unlocked note 3 N9000W8 in canada from a cellphone store on Monday Morning. The phone was great and worked without a hitch and had android 4.3 on it.
Later on during the day, there were numerous news headlines regarding a 4.4.2 was officially released. So i decided to do the software update. With failed attempts with the message "Your device have been modified, Software updates are not available"
I checked my Settings > about device > status > device status and it states custom or modified. I am unsure how this is possible thinking it was a brand new phone. After some in depth reading i powered off the phone and check the android download mode (power, home button vol down key combo).
It states device status: custom, firmware: custom, knox 0x1 (which meant my warranty was gone essentially). I proceeded to call the shop i purchased the phone at, and the manager said they buy the phones from the distributor which unlocks them before it gets in their hands. so it must have been rooted prior to me receiving the phone.
Long story short...i know its been quite the reading already my appologies. I used samsung KIES to backup the phone and it updated it back to the stock firmware 4.4.2. I was prepared to loose the root as i dont need it. More concerned about the warranty. With the device and firmware status back to original i can now do OTA updates, however
Problem i have now is after the factory firmware upgrade to stock, my sim no longer works on the network. Seems as if the device has a sim lock, but it never asked for one. A local cellphone shop in st.catharines said there might be an issue with the baseband after the official update.
before the update, i tried all the suggestions such as unmounting the sd card, wiping cache, using supersu to unroot.
Can anyone chime in on what the problem may be? I go to school here, so if all else fails i will have to go back to toronto where i purchased it, and have them figure it out. just a hassle for me to get there without a car.
Seems that the phone was software unlocked while it was rooted. Un rooting the device will simply lock the phone back up. Have you tried entering your carriers APN settings under mobile network?
You have a couple of options, you can root your phone again and software unlock your phone using "CF Region Lock Away" (I've heard that it worked on 4.3 (N900W8) not sure if it'll work with 4.4.2.
2nd option is to get a hardware unlock code from a retailer who unlocks phones.
If I were in your position, I'd try and return the USED phone back to the person you bought it from as it was clearly tampered with. You bought a phone which has KNOX 0x1 which VOIDS your warranty. You were under the assumption that the phone you bought was brand new in the box, FALSE ADVERTISING.

Bro.....
Meet me at the store you bought this from in T.O, I will get you a refund in 5 minutes.
Not even slightly kidding.
You were RIPPED OFF bud!! Do not allow that to go down. Tell them to switch it for another one, until you get one that has a warranty.
Seriously, my offer stands. If you want to meet down there sometime this week I would be glad to do so, I live about an hour outside the GTA but I don't give a ****. If there is anything I can do to help you in this situation I'll do it.
I have tried registering it on the fido network without any luck. Even the local cellphone shop was tinkering with it for 30minutes trying to help me out. They weren't able to do anything either. From my understanding, a software unlock only works for europe phones (based on what i have read) even the local guys said its usually just a pin unlock.
Update: The retailer that i bought it from said he ordered me a new white note 3 unlocked as well to replace my problematic one. When i go again i have to make sure its not rooted. IS there such thing as a Factory unlocked/unbranded samsung note 3 from samsung themselves?

The manager is more than willing to help me by getting me a new device. As mentioned in the previous post, i do hope that this one is unmodified/unrooted out of the box. Anything to look out for besides the software download information screen?
May i ask where you got your device? maybe i can go there and get mine. I might take you up on that offer, and I can swing by to get you. I live on the border of milton/oakville so you're not that far out.Go to school in st.catharines. It seems you're much more knowledgeable about this that i was at first.
appreciate the help

I traded a Red Nexus 5 I had at the time for a Black Unlocked Note 3 +$200 cash on Kijiji. Came with a Spigen Slim Armor too.
There are tons of decent deals on Kijiji, you NEED to know how to spot fakes, check IMEI's, look for defects, etc.
I can help you find something if you'd like, just say the word. I will still help you deal with the other guy as well. I'll bring an SD card with .apk's on it like CPU-Z to make sure it's legit. The IMEI we just type in protectyourdata.ca on my phone or tethered laptop to make sure it isn't blacklisted. Checking for unlock is easy too, as long as we have multiple sims from different companies (I have 2, we might have 3 with yours).
I'll make sure you walk out of there with a fully legitimate Note 3. 100%.
If I can help a fellow XDA'er, a Canadian to boot, I will do it in a heartbeat.
Sometimes I come off like a **** (especially to n00bs, I am really mean now and then...) but I am always willing to help.
I watched a few videos on how to spot fake devices and this one was legit for sure. I plan to go saturday to get this sorted out once and for all. The problem is i require the knox to be 0x0 as my part time job requires me to have a phone that is enterprise capable, for the byod. In the event he only has rooted unlocked phones, i will get my money back because i need a legit clean phone.
as mentioned i really appreciate the help, Can you send me a PM with your phone number? If you have a few hours to spare on saturday im more than willing to swing by and get you, in hopes to figure out my phone problem.
