Will a cwm data wipe, wipe my internal storage?

If you're referring to wiping cache, dalvik cache, or factory reset, then no. However, there are specific options to format the internal storage, and obviously, those will wipe the internal storage.

I put some personal ringtones in a folder on internal storage. I later installed a custom ROM and chose the full wipe factory reset, dalvik and cache etc. I was not expecting those files to be there after factory reset but they were. Is this normal?
Thanks!

Are you rooted? You can go in to TWRP and choose a wipe of the internal memory.
The factory reset just wipes out your system, data, caches and rebuilds them as new. Any other data stored on the phone outside of those areas are untouched.

This has not been asked in the 2012 N7 forums before apparently. If a factory reset wipes /data partition and cache partitions, would it also clear the internal storage located at /data/media? I've seen some people reporting CWM makes sure not to touch anything on other devices, but I haven't heard anything about TWRP on a Nexus 7.
Nah, it doesnt, in 2.6.0.0 there is advanced wipe option and there you must choose "internal sd"... "data, cache and dalvik cache" is only a factory reset, you lose your apps only

So basically, if I were to select Wipe, then Factory Reset, internal SD is left intact unless I do an advanced wipe? Or the other way around, I have to do an advanced wipe to keep the internal SD card?
Alright, just updated TWRP, see what you mean. Thanks!
Recently, before I flashed PA, I did a back up of my internal storage, namely WhatsApp files and pictures and it took a while. Proceeded to factory reset, clear cache and format system in CWM recovery. Factory reset and clearing cache got stuck but I did manage to format system and flash the rom and get it to boot.
My question is, for future reference, what options formats the internal storage? Wipe data? Factory reset? Saves a lot of time having to do a backup of the internal storage.
Thanks!

Excuse my ignorance but I've been out of the game for 3 years and not familiar with TWRP as I used to use Clockwork Recovery. What do I need to wipe when preparing to install a custom ROM? Do I just hit factory reset in TWRP or do I advance wipe?

Wipe everything other than the partition you have the custom ROM on, so if your custom ROM is on external SD, wipe and format the whole internal
When upgrading from the same custom ROM to a newer version, you only need to wipe System and Caches

It lets me wipe:
- Davik cache
- Cache
- System
- Internal Storage
- Data
So I should wipe everything but system or?

You need to wipe everything, sometimes internal storage, sometimes not. I wipe everything including internal storage though, as a lot of unneeded files are kept there. Just transfer what you want to keep to your pc or external card.
