Getting my Epic tomorrow and CANNOT WAIT
cool device, but peeking into the dev forum for the epic it seems that there isn't a whole lot going on yet, looks like they just got root, no custom roms or any other cool things yet..

I expect it wouldn't take long for other stuff to start showing up there. The phone isn't even available to the public until tomorrow, so why would they have much there yet?
Enjoy the Epic! I don't like the design/look of it, but to each his own right?
So how much are you going to sell me that hero for? =P

good luck with a samsung product, no way id buy that phone at launch without any custom roms. i do know ive seen a ton of evo's for sale on craigslist the past few days. i may call sprint today to see if they can bump up my upgrade from november so i can get an evo, i heard they are in stock again.
btw we don't really new a new thread every time someone leaves the hero.
I thought I'd share it with y'all

Thank god that one of the best android phones ever is able to be rooted. If the G2 was not able to be rooted, i think that that would just be going against the whole "open source" theme that android is going for ,.

Um, hate to tell you, but HTC and T-Mobile have pretty clearly demonstrated their stance of Free Open Source Software. The whole idea of locking us out goes against the spirit of Linux and Open Source. They are taking the work of others, and using it to turn a profit, screw the user in the process.
My G2 goes back this week. **** you T-Mobile, you just gained another b-stock G2.
Got mine til next Sunday. If no perm root by then, its going back. Guess ill have to stick with the vibrant, but oh well, at least its rootable.

give it time the vibrant is a nice phone no doubt but the g2 will have way more support for one being HTC and two being stock so being able to mod things for the g2 willsorta be how the nexus one is..which has great support who knows g2 might have 3.0 before samsung has 2.2 lol dont quot me either way you have a great phone
I understand, believe me. But I got this phone for its speed, which it def has, its support, being HTC, and the root ability, which is not here, yet at least. I need tether, bad. I hate the vibrant, but its so easily rootable. And I have tether. Had sprint and the evo. Left it for this phone. No regrets other than the crap they pulled on this phone. I wanted the hspa speeds, the vibrant I had right before this one, got almost the same speeds. So why not go back?

Hate to tell you, but the bug referenced is not a bug-as-in-a-hole-to-be-exploited. It's a bug in behavior, where changes to /system are thought to be successful by linux but actually aren't. Instead of getting a this-is-read-only error, the write appears to go through. And when the cache is flushed or when the phone is restarted it's apparent that nothing was written at all.
That said, work is still underway.

Has there been any news on this? I mean its going to be February tomorrow, and I was just wondering where the hell all this furor over the delayed updates went. Sprint hasn't really said anything concrete, neither has Samsung so I'm honestly pretty pissed...
I sprint tech told me samsung still have the froyo and sprint haven't received it yet.. He states we was one of the testers and have no ideal of a release date cause sprint doesn't haven't anything to test yet ... This was a few days ago

Sprint has it and it works Great. They are just trying to figure out a way to charge ALL their customers and extra 10.00 per month to get it, even if you don't have an Android Phone.
They've already annoucned that they're going to begin doing that haha.
Seriously though, where did all teh furor over this go? I remember a few weeks ago people were going crazy over this, and I haven't heard a single mention of it as of yet...

Yes. Customer will go away and give money to someone else.
I used to work in collections. One often repeated mantra of collections was "If they're yelling, you're still on the right track to get paid." If they stopped yelling, they no longer cared. In business, it is a bad sign if complaints grind to a halt, as it likely indicates an upcoming exodus of customers.
I probably won't leave Sprint, but in spite of how much I enjoy the Epic as it is, the fact that it is taking so long to be able to enjoy the Epic as it could be will likely have me looking at LG and/or HTC phones next time around.
Same here, I like sprint but I'll no longer buy samsung phones anymore because this sucks big time. I no longer care for an update, it will come when it comes I'm just waiting 1 yr goes by to purchase another phone and more likely will be a HTC, I love their keyboards.

That's where I am.... mostly happy with DK28 and the custom roms. I'll be considering HTC next time... it's a shame the EVO was so damn slow compared to the SGS series because that would have been a decent competitor.

My last phone was a TP2. It shipped with WM 6.1 but 6.5 was released shortly after the phone was released. It took about 6 months for Sprint and HTC to release 6.5, and the whole time people were pissing and moaning about it on all the boards. Plus, many users (includinng me) had screens that failed in the first year. It aint any better in the HTC world.

I have trouble believing... but maybe someone in the Samsung front office actually got a clue...
Add in the "rumor" of a Samsung Nexus S 4G being announced by Sprint at CTIA....
Heck, would be nice to be ahead for a change....
But I'm not gonna hold my breath! ROFL!
More than one person here has said any official port of GB to the Epic would be far less work than Froyo has been for Sammy and Sprint. But I've always said that's being more hopeful than history warrants us to be. I'll be glad to just get a good Froyo on here without worries.

While I have my doubts about Sprint/Samsung actually supporting our phones with OS updates past 2.2; the possibility of the Nexus coming to Sprint and the speed at which they have (supposedly) fixed bugs and moved to release another Froyo update to us has me optimistic this may have some truth to it.
Maybe samsung does care after all

If this happens it could go a long way to make me rethink my never buying another samsung and going back to HTC. Samsung had great hardware. I love it, but I can't deal with this software delay again. If I see evidence I won't have to wait with samsung then I would be welling to give another shot. They need to prove it.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I suspect much would be forgiven if Sammy actually accomplished this, it went relatively smoothly, defects were minimal, and the change persisted in the future.
I know I'd forgive and forget. As I posted in another thread awhile back, I'm not vindictive, and it makes no sense to hold a grudge against a company... I only punish myself, not them.

I always have believed that if a couple of dev's on this site can pump out a stable rom in a short amount of time WHILE having other jobs and doing this in their free time, there is no reason for any company that PAYS people to do the same job to take as long as these companies do.
As neat as it sounds to have Sprint and Samsung push out the first 2.3 updates in the US, I will not be holding my breath what so ever. I'll stick with custom roms and just Odin back if I have any trouble.
With that said, it'll be nice to see Samsung release this, but then again I just don't care. I love my phone regardless
Jus be patient ppl...it will come when it comes....
IF it comes that is.
Ok... Flame me if you want to, but I believe it.
You: Omg! No! Sammy will nevurrrr do that!
Yes, they would. They dont want to lose customers and more importantly, if the nexus s 4g rumors are true, it will most likely have the same hardware as the epic because the epic 4g radios arent broken, so they dont need to fix them, and even if they are, samsumg used some of the horrible moment files for us. Anyways, with a nexus s 4g, samsung will have a 2.3.x device with epic hardware, and since they already have the drivers from it, the epic 4g will get 2.3 quick like how the i9000 has official 2.3, even if we dont get it quick, we (the xda community) can get the nexus s 4g software running on the epic really quick.

Totally agree. Samsung is slow, sprint is just as slow if not worse. I started out with blackberry(bowing my head in shame) and they were horrible with them. Rim atleast understood that so they let out leaks on a fairly regular basis for the devs to play with. Now with android, first the moment and now with the epic, sprint is terrible again. And whats even worse with both of them, and where they can stop alot negativity from even starting is if they both just comminicate more with the users. I feel if we had more info, especially on promised updates, it is an easier pill to swallow then being left totally in the dark.

Im always reading on here and people keep asking where the 2.3 root is and wondering if the devs have abandoned the Supersonic EVO 4G. Here is what I have gathered in regards to both of those questions.
The devs are working on the EVO3D to provide the community with root access on that device. From what I've gathered there are many things in the process that are similar to the Supersonic EVO 4G and some that are not. They have stated that they have Temp root available already and the Temp root should be sticky (Permanent) by the end of this week. I don't own an EVO3D so this doesn't mean much to me personally but what it does mean is that once the root becomes sticky for the EVO3D that we can look forward to there being more activity on the Supersonic EVO 4G forum. The devs haven't forgot about the Supersonic EVO 4G. Just be patient.
For more information go here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1140578
well atleast in november i get the reduced price for the evo 3d!
After reading everyone's side by side comparison, I don't see the point in buying a 3D. I'm hopeful for a new 4G root soon!

I don't agree with that. Sprint doesn't develop phones; they offer service. So to blame Sprint for hardware problems (HTC) or for software problems (Android/Google) is unreasonable. I mean you can call up Sprint and stress your point but your not going to get anything done in a timely fashion.
but who has the final say on the updates its the carrier! it is just hard to believe that with all the problems with the GB update Sprint/Google/HTC and anyone else is turning a deaf ear and blind eye.I could care less about root I just want my handset to work the way it did before the updates. that is all im asking for i know it will never happen ..
sorry for the rant ....Dont post much here but read and search ALOT
you make it sound like there are only a couple devs for the EVO and they have all abandoned it for the EVO3D. I guarantee you only a fraction of the people who have been working on the EVO have a 3D now. It's not like everyone jumped ship.
It tooks months to root the last update right? Give it some freaking time people.

Exactly. I really think it will be rooted soon enough. The 3d is being worked on but even with all the work, HTC still needs to unlock it. They said they would unlock bootloaders for future phones but never specifically said the Evo3d or the Sensation.
I wonder what will happen if for some reason HTC decides not to do anything and people get stuck with the Evo3d that is unrootable. Too risky for me. At least we know our phone has been rooted many times.
There is no such thing as 'un-rootable'...
Comparing my wife's now unrooted Evo (thanks to a new refurb) side by side with my 3d....The 3d kills the OG Evo. That being said.....I still prefer her rooted Evo 4G over my stock Evo 3d.........Patiently waiting to root both. I'm sure it will be done. Both phones still have huge communities.
I wonder if we got together a bounty maybe it would be paid a bit more attention. I got a.replacement last week and its driving me crazy not being rooted. I really miss cm7 and I'm eager to try a few other roms. Considering I'm about to buy a used rooted EVO for the time being id rather donate to a developer instead. I have no problem paying someone for their.skill if I .don't have it. Hell I bought easy tether pro for $10 cause my EVO is my only internet access .

This. There is a lot of hopeful talk about being patient and exactly zero information about anyone working on the 4G. I hope I'm wrong, but for now it just reads like wishful thinking by those of us without the ability to root since the GB OTA (thanks HTC).
