Um, hate to tell you, but HTC and T-Mobile have pretty clearly demonstrated their stance of Free Open Source Software. The whole idea of locking us out goes against the spirit of Linux and Open Source. They are taking the work of others, and using it to turn a profit, screw the user in the process.
My G2 goes back this week. **** you T-Mobile, you just gained another b-stock G2.
Got mine til next Sunday. If no perm root by then, its going back. Guess ill have to stick with the vibrant, but oh well, at least its rootable.

give it time the vibrant is a nice phone no doubt but the g2 will have way more support for one being HTC and two being stock so being able to mod things for the g2 willsorta be how the nexus one is..which has great support who knows g2 might have 3.0 before samsung has 2.2 lol dont quot me either way you have a great phone
I understand, believe me. But I got this phone for its speed, which it def has, its support, being HTC, and the root ability, which is not here, yet at least. I need tether, bad. I hate the vibrant, but its so easily rootable. And I have tether. Had sprint and the evo. Left it for this phone. No regrets other than the crap they pulled on this phone. I wanted the hspa speeds, the vibrant I had right before this one, got almost the same speeds. So why not go back?

Hate to tell you, but the bug referenced is not a bug-as-in-a-hole-to-be-exploited. It's a bug in behavior, where changes to /system are thought to be successful by linux but actually aren't. Instead of getting a this-is-read-only error, the write appears to go through. And when the cache is flushed or when the phone is restarted it's apparent that nothing was written at all.
That said, work is still underway.

Yeah. I read this and smirked a bit at all of the people who were going to throw this "garbage" Samsung phone away and "upgrade" to the HTC experience with the G2.
As a side note, the loose hinge eventually happened with my G1 as well. The screen stopped sitting flush with the rest of the body, and anytime you would use the touch screen it clanked together with the keyboard. Also had some touch screen issues because of it. But, I digress.

LOL I guess you haven't heard about the bigger screw up. The phone is advertised as having 4GB internal memory, mysteriously most of that memory is not available, and T-Mobile wants people to believe the OS ate most of it up.

This op is one of the ones that got the OTA a few weeks ago. He never made it clear to anybody that it was a special test phone at that time (although he did state it didn't come from T-Mobile). This sent everyone into a tizzy thinking there was the possibility of an OTA for the masses being sent out.
That being said, I'd a pay a small premium for that phone over a standard G2. Risky as far as warranty goes, but that's true of anything you buy used I suppose.

Definitely not crippled. Everything works phenomenal.
I don't understand why this device is worth more, all it has is a test imei that allows for test otas. It's not like it's nand unlocked and can be broken into. No offense to the OP, but once we get the nand unlocked, people that root, won't be looking forward to OTAs, except for new releases of Android instead.

Yes. But the Inspire is on AT&T, and it's the very first AT&T Android device to allow sideloading.

I doubt AT&T is going to change anything. Other sources are saying that the Inspire also has sideloading blocked.
Looks like now these other sources are reversing what they were saying yesterday. I wonder why the Inspire has sideloading but doesn't have the option to turn it on and off in settings?

You can't use full custom roms on Moto phones. Apparently they didn't get the memo on what Android is and they're trying to be Apple. The Inspire should be able to use custom kernels. The Atrix will be rooted and will probably get custom roms just not roms with custom kernels. As long as the phone works like it should and isn't an abortion like the Captivate I won't need custom roms.

I had a Fuze too, briefly, til it met a tragic end and then the great insurance thru AT&T found a loophole and refused to replace it. If AT&T didn't offer the best service in the backwoods where I live, would have dropped them a long time ago. Sprint, not an option.. T-Maybe not even present at the table.. VZW took over AllHell and have not touched the infrastructure since then. And I bought out my contract just to leave AllHell early they were soooo bad.

ouch. thats grim.
Honestly, I'd be very surprised if the Evo 3D was locked down like this. I'm willing to bet that Verizon asked them to make it this way, and they complied.
Sprint, on the other hand, hasn't been the type of company to try to keep everything locked down and make it harder for the dev community. Big V definitely has, as exemplified by the Droid X.
Besides, even if it does come out all locked down like that, the devs here will have it opened up within a few days.
that would have been my next question, if V had requested this setup specifically.
it would seem the "other companies" are oh-so-bunched-up re: tethering w/o a plan, being the big issue with custom ROMs. Sprint might not be as concerned (so far) about that, and thus, not concerned about rooted phones? idk... idle speculation
No surprise here. After all, they did cripple their gpus for over 4 years. This is nothing. Htc = garbage.
Hoping that this is just because of douche-baggery on Verizon's part -- that they requested the phone be totally locked down, like the Moto products that they are selling.
On the other hand, the devs only took three days to break all that ****, so perhaps it's a case of "anything you can do, we can do better," and HTC/Verizon's efforts will meet with utter #FAIL.

I think it does. I remember back when we were starting to flashing ROMs... well they had to be signed in order to be installed or the recovery program would outright refuse to put it on the phone. I guess the implication on this is that even the recovery image itself must be signed in order to install as well as the ROMs. Now, with the EVO, the recovery part does not care if the ROM zip file is signed or not (well, RA has this setting disabled so it will flash regardless) but there was one point where any file that needed to be flashed on the device needed to be signed.

I highly doubt it is even possible for any company to completely lock out android hackers. We have some of the most knowledgeable hackers in our community, some of whom have been around for many many years and have seen there share of OS's

I bet you're right, verizon is anal about locking their phones down, they are evil people! I hate verizon...
According to some of the comments it is the same old locked bootloader as the evo and incredible. I doubt HTC will try that hard to lock them down.
heck, sometimes I wonder if they give hints about security holes on purpose. Just the other day I saw something in one of the new ROM leaks that gave me some ideas
Hey guys I'm coming from the HTC inspire to HTC evo. Over at the inspire forums they have a super one click option to take s off and root the device it was very simple with video instructions as well. What's the easiest way you guys have here to root the evo? I was looking at a thread but it has about 50 steps any other way around that? Is there a super one click option?
unfortunately... those of us with the OTA update are stuck with rootless EVO's...
the fortunate users had previously rooted their phones with a drag and drop i believe... (don't take my word on that, i joined the root sensation a little late... hence my rootless phone) but i think it was like 5 steps er so... it didn't look too bad and it was even easier for you if your on a linux platformed pc with unrevoked er sumthing like that...
either way the EVO is an outstanding phone and i stand by it, until something better comes out... (not the nexus s)
If you have a android 2.2 model go to http://unrevoked.com/#evo for the easiest to use tool around.
If you have android 2.3.3 go to http://vaseline.com/ and lube up because you are screwed until someone releases an exploit

IT seems some best buys still have 2.2 stock they are pushing. Who knows how long this will last
so you guys don't have a way to go back to stock not even with h boot? That sucks man. I'll probably stay with the inspire for now. HTC sense comes with stock 2.3 and they got "s" off already according to HTC clay on twitter I hope soon some dev will root the new evo with 2.3

If you have a android 2.2 model go to http://unrevoked.com/#evo for the easiest to use tool around.
If you have android 2.3.3 go to http://vaseline.com/ and lube up because you are screwed until someone releases an exploit

unfortunately i belong to the latter of the two...
I'm switching to sprint because I don't get great signal at work. They have an sprint antenna on the roof and anyone that has a sprint phone can run 4g all day long and also I like the front facing camera too something that the inspire don't have.

The only thing front facing cameras are good for are porn with a gf and face security to log into the phone with. *of course the programs on the market don't actually work with a rooted evo* haha
Why not get the 3vo? Piss off all if your evo owning buddies...
