Hi guys, I know there are many posts regarding the different root methods out there, but I'm sorta new to this and I've been getting very confused.
I currently am running N900W8VLUBMJ1 rooted with the rdlv method, knox at 0x0.
Id like to update to the newest N900W8VLUBMJ4 and root that as well if possible.
What's the best method of doing this? If I lose the knox, I'm not too concerned. Rather not, but doesn't really matter.
In short, is there a specific process to follow when updating my already rooted device? Is it easier just for me to run a different bootloader?

Go with the same method again, use URDLV to create the firmware. This will keep your current boot loader, the new one (in MJ3 and above) triggers the counter with the URDLV obtained root.
But after, you will need to also flash the modem, and NON-HLOS file that is in the official firmware tar.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk
Thanks for clarifying!
So basically do the same thing as before using the universal method, and no need to flash back to original or anything right?
Sent from my SM-N900W8 using Tapatalk
The URDLV method doesn't seem to wanna work for me:

I suppose this isn't possible then with N900W8VLUBMJ4?
Can I just flash the update with odin with the new bootloader etc? Will root still work?

Copy and paste the commands you've used for cygwin, there is a particular way I have to run it for it to work for me.

Same results as above with both.

This is a Canadian phone?
All I did was update the firmware using KIES 3.1... lost root but I simply used VROOT to regain root and WINAM to reset to OFFICIAL status,,, which still allows OTA updates.
Don't worry about all the comment about been a Chinese SuperSU (new version 1.7.2.4200 interface is in English anyway.) and simply install it.
Make sure to reinstall the Xposed App and that it has root access.
Enjoy

thanks for the response.
I just updated via odin to the newest firmware. I figured why not.
So I guess all I need to do is vroot to complete that method. If I'm going to trip knox (which I havent yet) aren't I better off with a custom recovery anyways? Did vroot trip yours?

Nope.. mine did not trip... and using WINAM, I regained Official Status and I am now able to check for OTA,s
simply go into your Xposed installer apps and reinstall the framework (app_process)
Make sure you keep an eye on your phone while connected to the PC and rooting with VRoot... It will ask for authorization to install some xtra software and warnings will be popping up on your cellphone... just allow them.
You will retain Knox 0x0
After I updated, my wifi password keeps getting forgotten every time I turn off the wifi.
So I have to enter the password back every time.
Any one on MJ4 have or NOT have this problem?

thanks for this info, but I decided to bite the bullet and just install a custom recovery. I figure, eventually when some nice 4.4 roms or something come out we will all be willing to trip anyways. Hope to not have any warranty issues.
Thanks for this info though, I'm sure it will help a few people!

Just got my N3 yesterday, mine is MJ7... Will VRoot work with the latest OTA already installed? I've done quite a bit of searching on getting this thing rooted but xda "banned" KINGO cause everyone is freaking out about some Chinese server or exploit threat or whatever, supposedly La Vega won't work after MJ7 OTA... Even though I've been rooting a while, this all has me confused on what really works and what just made it to the forums first but might not work... Any help with legit root and recovery methods would be MUCH APPRECIATED!

If you're worried about Chinese root method than you better stay away form vroot. Even the interface is in Chinese. Kingoapp, has addressed the concerns that some people had with their latest version, 1.1.2. You can check out their facebook page where they explain it all.
Understand that if you plan on using a custom recovery or ROM it will trip Knox and vroot and Kingoapp are probably not the way you want to go. You might look at CF Root instead.

CF Root will trip knox. What I was saying is that if you want a custom recovery or rom, you might as well go with CF Root because it is going to trip knox anyway. vroot and Kingoapp doesn't trip knox because you don't get a custom recovery or rom as part of the root. They let you use apps that require root and do modification on the stock rom (if you know what you're doing).
Will De Vega Work?
so will the de la vega root method work for the latest VRUBMJ7 update? If not, what other root method will work that will not trip KNOX? Thanks in advanced

So even with the canadian version unlocked bootloader you cannot install TWRP without tripping knox? Guess i can just use TBU to backup everything instead.
If you do root with one of these methods be careful. They are a security risk. I'd use mobile Odin to reflash my stock firmware after rooting and maybe even factory reset, just to be sure that I'd nuked any naughty apps. Mobile Odin will allow you to retain root.

It still was NOT easy to use, but I can confirm positively that it can work and in my case did not trip knox. I had to reboot the phone manually at one point because it appeared stuck and I tried a 2nd time. The 2nd time the windows app rebooted the phone and it did get rooted.

Its been so long since my s3 was unbootlocked, what does it limit the N3 from doing?
Saw this post
"doesn't work for lots of people. Myself included. here's what I finally did to keep root with the original Root de LA Vega.
1. Odin back to original stock MI9
2. Odin to Root de la Vega (full instructions in that thread)
3 . installed xposed, wanam, security hack boot screen to remove "custom"
4. rebooted 2X, enabled supersu pro, checked the survival mode, unroofed
5. took the OTA, re-enabled supersu.
"
Thoughts? Do I need to do all that?
I hope the N3 gets the great support the S3 did!
I'm waiting hoping for a easier workaround myself.. Unfortunately. . Hope they get there!

So the post you quoted is for those who want to keep root after latest OTA(MI9 to MJ7). If your phone came with MJ7, then there is no way to root it other than kingo root method. Those people who fail to keep root is because they modified the stock rom(eg., debloat, Mod, etc, safestrap isn't considered modification because it's just recovery alternative.) and took OTA and during the OTA it just fails because samsung OTA can't verify your system.

Hi guys, I've bought my new galaxy note 3 two days ago and I want to root it.
I've carefully read almost everything about root and knox, but some things are still obscure to me.
My note is running on Android 4.3
AP on N9005XXUDNK2
CP on N9005XXUDBJ7
CSC on MK2
According to the URDLV thread, I can't root AND keep my knox to 0x0
so my questions are:
There is any other way to root and keep my knox to 0x0 ?
If not, and if I still want root my phone, there is any advantage to use ROOT de la Vega instead of the cf-auto-root or any other way ?
(The cf way seem to be easier and faster)
Thank a lot for your help and sorry for my english :/

Both URDLV and mobile odin cannot root without tripping knox with your phone bootloader.
Cf auto root is much easier. That's the advantage.
So, let's root with CF
and I hope someone will manage to find how to reset the knox. I'll add some $ to the bounty.
After rooting, will still be able to use OAT update ?

Yes, RDLV will not trip your Knox, CF root does, correct me if I'm wrong. Once Knox is tripped, no OTA.

Just now i flash back official firmware. No rooting, no custom recovery, still my phone status shows custom. So i think as long as you trip knox it will always show custom regardless if you're using stock or custom rom. However wanam exposed can revert it to official but not sure if OTA will work or not since no other update for my country but it does show 'your device is up to date' thing when i tried to update through OTA. So i guess it will work

Towelroot installs needed files for root. I didnt install SuperSU at all from play store cause its not latest version.
ChainFire is updating SuperSU soon and when latest version (1.99) is online you can install it from play store.
After Towelroot I just installed Titanium Backup (and pro key) and freezed all crap including knox.
After using towelroot on a KNOX-enabled stock 4.3 device, is is possible to revert back to the 4.2.2 bootloader without burning the e-fuse?
Ok, tried to delete system apps, including the knox ones, with root explorer and was successfull!
And about the downgrade, it will change the knox status for sure, because knox is in the bootloader too, not only the apps and libraries, and here, root doesn't made any chance...
Enviado desde mi GT-I9506 mediante Tapatalk
The KNOX e-fuse should be burned only by the bootloader in ODIN mode when it flashes an unsigned file to the device. Getting local root on the device and writing a new bootloader directly to the flash should not be able to affect the e-fuse?

It is slightly wrong. You shoud burned KNOX when you flash different version of kernel, recovery, bootloader.
You can flash system, modem, NON-HLOS and maybe others. I've tested only system and NON-HLOS.
Now I have my GT-I9506 Singapore version with KNOX warranty void 0x0 in this configuration:
System and NON-HLOS from Finladian version: I9506XXUBNE1
The others from original Sigapore version: I9506XXUBND2
towelroot.com installed and working!
Thanks to towelroot

Yes, but you are talking about flashing this via download/odin mode, right?
My point is that with root, you should be able to modify the flash directly, overwriting the bootloader.

As we have root I would think (so don't quote me on this) that OTA is blocked. But as I see it it does not really matter as the next update for this devise is probably going to be 4.4.2 and flashing that probably also means loosing root.
Now that was a lot of probably but as I see it..
You need "Official" status under Phone Info to receive OTA updates. ROOT will be overwritten by the updates.
After root it's very common to have "Custom" status, but you can cheat it with Traingle away app (not tested by me) or sometimes you can be "Official"after Wipe ( it depends what changes has been done to the system)

I do not seem to be able to find V 2.1 Can you guide me please? Thanks
Don't know why he doesn't label his site or the filename better but it should be the latest version when you download from his site.
When you open the app to install it, it should say the version at the top.

I was able to use towelroot to get access on this device. I haven't been able to get TWRP onto it though, or get a Rom on either.

If this is like a lot of Samsung devices then what's going on is the early firmware (NE2) was rootable with towelroot, but the more recent one (NK1) is not. Check your settings > about tablet to see which build number you're on (I'm assuming it's NK1). The most immediate solution would be to just downgrade the firmware, root, and stay with that (disable update notifications/freeze the updater app).
However, if you know what you're doing, it's only the kernel that needs to be changed. So extract the kernel file (boot.img) from both firmware files and make a tar file for each boot.img. Flash the older kernel, root with towelroot, then flash the newer kernel, and voila you're rooted on the latest build. Your call

I have not tried, sorry
I did this with the t337a, if you want I could take a shot at it. I have no way of making sure it works though. Let me know if you are interested or if anyone would be willing to test the kernel.
I own the Tab S. It was released after towelroot was patched. So recently when Kingroot update their root method and such, we now can root with kingroot on KitKat ANK1 firmwares and not trip Knox. Of course people who owned att devices said it worked and some with Verizon said it didn't work. I mean its worth a try if anyone wants to try kingroot.
