Working Launchers for Kindle Fire HDX - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" General

Just a point of info....almost every Android launcher I've downloaded from 1Mobile.com seems to work, to some degree, on the HDX. Particularly promising is VIRE Launcher, which in addition to looking and working like other standard launchers, displays the 4 or 5 wallpapers that it comes with, as well as a clock widget that comes standard with the launcher.
I also noticed that, unlike with the HD, you can set the Android launcher as the default launcher when you press the home button (On the 2012 models, if you did find a working launcher, you could only activate it by an icon, not the home button).

I just tried out the Trebuchet launcher from Hashcode's cm10.1 tate file and it works great on my HDX 8.9" so far. Setting it always as the home button makes it the default launcher also!
Edit: Changing some of the setting is causing Trebuchet to crash.

Using 1 mobile market I download apex,nova,adw,buzz,go,etc
Buzz allows the wallpapers that come with the themes you download for it. However most themes use a lot of widgets which do not work.
Go launcher allows you to change the wallpaper only for the app drawer. Also when I have it in portrait mode the launcher does not work unless I have auto rotate off. Go launcher also works with gowidgets.

That's why I personally recommend Vire, which has 4 or 5 wallpapers built in that you can use, plus two different clock widgets. There's also Espier, which, since it's modeled after iOS, is designed to look good without widgets on the screen.

I know this probably won't make me a lot of friends here, but honestly, I prefer the HDX stock interface to any Android launcher that I might replace it with.

Nova Launcher 2.3b3
I would like to confirm that Nova Launcher 2.3 beta 3 works perfectly on my 8.9 HDX WiFi, replacing stock launcher.
There is a bug though - long tap on anything (i.e. to add/move/remove widget or app) in landscape mode causes screen rotation and nothing else. Switch to portrait, do what you need and turn back to landscape. Other than that - I'm a happy camper with Nova

nova launcher
Yeah i test nova launcher and it s working very well ! Only wallpaper and widget not working ! When you long tape on anything, just block the rotation and all is good! Y ou can also put the old Amazon launcher to use it when y ou want !

I agree that the stock interface is very nice. I just wish there was a way to install custom icons. Sideloading apps leads to some low resolution icons on the carousel. Can't wait for this device to get rooted.

I'm curious, I know that most of the Google apps can be side loaded, except for the play store, of course, so would the "Google Experience" launcher, the one from the Nexus 5 work? It's worked so far on all devices on 4.2 and up for me.

There is a tutorial on the internet. I haven't tried it yet, I will be getting my kindle around December, to replace my rooted Nook HD. Is it better than the Nexus 7? I figure that a root method is inevitable, but is there a big performance difference between the S4 pro and the 800?

I followed the steps on the guide and it still caused crashes. S800 is MUCH faster than the S4 Pro. Especially when it comes to graphics. Adreno 330 crushes Adreno 320.

Yea. The big downside that's not addressed with sideloading is finding and updating apks for apps you've paid for on the Play store. 1 Mobile Market only has free apps. So things like icon packs/themes or apps that have license verification will not work.

I figure that i may be able to extract apps that I bought from the Nook, remove verification with Lucky Patcher, then sideload them. Would that work? I mean, I already bought them, so it's not piracy or warez, but would creating a modded APK without verification from lucky patcher work on a non rooted device?

App developers should have a way to synchronize apps from various stores to avoid these issues. I wonder if anybody has ever considered it.

I had considered making an App Store that has patched apps/apps not available in the google play store, but at the same time giving Android a good name by keeping out all pirated apps.

Wow that looks stunning, thanks for posting. Would u be able to share your exp regarding its responsiveness and/or lag if any? Also does installing this automatically disable the stock launcher? Im concerned about having two launchers running at the same time and eating up all the resources. Thanks in advance
The Launcher is selected by default once you press the home button.
Once set, do not run with two launcher.
No lag at the moment, very smooth
One more question mrmela, does it take long time to launch? Users sharing their experience on the Market say that it shuts down as long as you start an application and then it takes quite some time for SPB Shell to start again. Is this true?
Sorry for asking but its a bit expensive for that sort of app and I'd like to be sure it performs well. Thank you once again for the video.

When you quit an application, it takes about 5 \ 7 seconds to reload, but not for all apps.
Keep in mind that this is the first time works on the tablet, definitely will be improved also in view of ICS .......

Wow! I first bought SPB Shell for my old WinMo **cough** phone and it was a decent launcher. When the 3d version came out, I bought it for my EVO Shift and wasn't too impressed. It looked OK on the EVO 3D, but wasn't anything special compared to the HTC Sense launcher and I thought at the time that it might be more suitable for a tablet. I just installed it on my A500 and holy crap! Eye candy for sure. If you have friends who are iPad fanboys and you want to piss in their corn flakes, just put it in carousel demo mode for them.
Peformance-wise, I noticed just a bit of lag when using live wallpaper (which they recommend against when you go to enable live wallpaper in the settings), but no lag with static wallpaper. Returning to the homescreen after exiting an app doesn't seem any slower than returning to the stock home screen. I also like the vertically scrolling, non-paginated app drawer with 3d effect.
It is kind of a bummer that SPB doesn't offer a trial or a "lite" version, but I'm glad I can finally use what I previously bought. A tablet is where the app really belongs.

When I load ADWLauncher on fresh restart the Stock Launcher is not running in the background. Im sure its the same with the SPB Shell Launcher.
If I load the Stock Launcher first then start ADWLauncher it will stay running till I stop the process.
I dont think it would be smart to freeze the Stock launcher or uninstall it. If you would happen to have a problem with your current launcher then you may be in trouble and have to reflash your rom.
At least thats what Im thinkin
Somebody want to test that theory.

Help understanding themes and launchers

Hello,
im new to android from iPhone and with all this customization im lost in the goodness of changing everything to my liking... but what is the difference from icons, and wallpapers, themes and launchers....
will one give me the option to change all of them or is each one different.... ive been searching on the play store but am so confused...
thanks.
Launchers: available on and installable from the play store. The stock Samsung launcher is touchwiz. This is the main interface for the phone. Changing to another launcher will change the way this looks, and works.
Themes: These are modifications of the general look and feel of the phones firmware. These are done by themers here who take the stock (or custom) framework files and modify them. These are currently unavailable until the S4 has the ability to install custom firmware. The locked bootloader has to be unlocked first.
Wallpapers: The background of your screen. You can change these within the launcher, including stock touchwiz. You can add custom wallpapers and use them also, by choosing from the gallery.
Icons: Generally built into the applications and not modifyable.
Thanks. Would you recommend nova launcher?
I've never used it. Many like it.
I use Apex on my SII running 4.1.2

I've been using Nova Launcher for a while now and it's pretty nice. Lots of things to customize, like the look and feel of the app drawer and how app screens flip or roll from one to the next. Nice thing about downloading a launcher from the playstore is it installs along side the original or in this case Touch Wiz launcher. So if you decide you don't like it, simply switch back or try a different one.

I recommend searching - Google will get you comparisons of all the available launchers and give you full information on installing, changing settings, different features, and how to clear defaults and change launchers if the app itself doesn't offer the option. Include XDA as a search term and you'll get lots of theads around here...
One of the bonuses with Android vs. iPhone is since it's all hackable, there are TONS of threads, reviews, and blog posts on how to do anything. The browser on the phone works great (especially with this nice big screen).
You've probably started another thread that will turn into more of the same - until we get custom ROMs, you won't get any info that isn't on another thread already

I have both Apex and Nova Launcher. I like them both. They do a great job. Until custom ROM's are available you can check out this guys site:
http://czarnomorski.pl/ (Some great simple wallpapers on his site or in app format here
He made some great themes that work with both Nova and Apex as well as Go Launcher EX or ADW Launcher. Check Play store here:
If you are using TFS Shell then you need this one:
If you install the theme you can then go into the settings of the launcher and apply it. You can apply the whole theme or just parts of it like the Icons or Wallpaper.
Enjoy.

Nexus 6 launcher?

Does anybody know how i can get Nexus 6's launcher onto the Note 4. I install Google Now launcher and it gives me a 4x4 grid. But all the Nexus 6 vids show a 5x5 grid utilising the resolution properly. Is it some modified Google now launcher? Any input would be greatly appreciated. I'm not here to boast about anything Note or Nexus related. I just like that launcher and am just very curious. Thanks.
Did you long press on the screen and then modified your settings, if i remember correctly you can change it from there, another option its to use a launcher like Nova wich its my favorite, for some weird reason google now launcher drains my battery fast :-/

I know of XposedGEL I was looking thanks stefantumi. I was looking for a method that wouldn't require root though. Honestly I thought Google just made it dependent on the screen resolution really or if anything it's a different apk that could be easily extract-able and honestly I'm kind of surprised nobody else has brought this up yet I guess I'm just picky.
Nova launcher was my first thought too pikul, and I AM running it on a 5x5 grid. I'll try extracting the apk from the factory image of the nexus 6 and see if i can install that.

Any way to centralise the app drawer button?

Hi,
I've had the S7 Edge for about a week now and am absolutely loving it, however I have one small gripe. I am used to having the app drawer icon/ button centralised rather than off to the right. TouchWiz doesn't seem to let me move it, and I don't really want to go to a third party launcher if I can avoid it...
Any suggestions? Hacks etc.? I have root access so options involving root are OK for me.
Thanks in advance...

You are missing out a lot by not wanting to use any 3rd party launchers.
There are over 100 launchers in the google playstore and ALL of them have
the option to move any of the dock icons or other icons on home screen to be
located in the center of the home screen dock or any other place.
None of these launchers require root but it's always best to have root access.
I don't understand why so many people here in xda use the stock touchwiz
launcher when there are so many better ones available which have almost
every conceivable feature and user options in them.
Nova, Next Launcher, Go Launcher and Google Launcher are just a few examples.
Good luck,
Have a great day!

I switched over to TW for my default launcher to see if I could find an answer for you.
Well, dang, if that isn't annoying. I got nothing. You would think that would be an easy and intuitive customization. (Needing root for an Xposed module or a custom ROM??? It just should be easier than that!)
Ugh. I am not OCD, but I prefer my home at center, too.
I find that I only use TW to create shortcuts (so that they appear as options for the Edge sidebar)... then I return to Nova. Like you, I have tried more than a dozen launchers (Smart, Action, Lightning, Go.... many of them very good....) but for me, I keep coming back to Nova for customization and options.
Good Luck. I hope someone finds what should be a simple solution.
I discover Nova, since then, TouchWiz is something from the past, Nova is much better and versatile, try it, you will love it

Nothing to get flamed about. Touchwiz is actually quite nice, bloatware aside. Disabling all that I'd even be able to be happy with Touchwiz if not for the app drawer button. That alone was enough for me to go to Nova. I searched high and low for a way to move the app drawer where it belongs (center) but couldn't find a thing.
My only real grasp on TouchWiz over any other is the widgets I use. Can't use Samsung widgets on Nova right?

I never tested all of them, but pulling up widgets on my phone right now there's an option to add Samsung widgets (that I didn't disable with EZ Disabler) so I am assuming they should all work. What are some you're curious about? I'll check them. I know edge still works fine, you can keep the stock look or apply the stock Marshmallow look, there's a ton of options. It basically takes nothing away (so far not even performance or battery life) but enables you to have a bit more control over things. A lot more control really.
Gonna try now, thanks for that info.

I have been a long time Nova user, but also prefer the Touchwiz launcher on the S7. Unfortunately, the only way to move the app drawer button to the center it to have it the only button in the dock at the bottom.

I am using the paid version with the notifications (TeslaUnread) add on. I'm not sure what enabled the widgets as it wasn't my goal, but that's what I have installed on mine in case it matters. I just hold my finger down on the background and it pops up with the usual menu with wallpaper, widgets, etc.

Wife got an S7 today. Haven't touched it yet but I'll pay special attention when setting this part up to see if I can find what makes it available. Like I said, when I set mine up I just wasn't paying attention to the widgets because I don't use any aside from the weather. I just know they're all there now.

Couple of positives, nova launcher installed and faster unlocking

Finally put nova launcher on, cannot stand that white mess at the bottom of my screen with the pixel launcher when using anything other than a black wallpaper, i mean what the hell was Google thinking with that awful looking feature, i really have no idea, either way glad I did cause now been able to get rid of that unsightly long Google search bar as well, and don't know if I'm imagining it but now since I've switched to the nova launcher and have ambient display disabled the phone is unlocking faster to screen on without the Google launcher ? so seems it's not just the ambient display issue but also seems to be the pixel launcher is lagging, go figure but it's faster for me, hip hooray.
Funny, I just switched to Nova Launcher yesterday. I don't care for the search bar either. I am looking for the APK that will allow Google Feed to work with it.
But I don't think the phone unlocks any faster than with the stock launcher. Each phone, like each person, is unique so I don't doubt that you see unlock speed gains.
But yeah, I don't now why I waited so long to switch to Nova. It rocks!

Yeah I don't know why I didn't do it sooner, my home screen is so much cleaner and can have light wallpapers haha, I'm not sure if it's me but it does feel a bit quicker, could be in my head.

My mind is blown that you, of all people, just tried Nova.

Thanks this worked, it's one of the reasons i didn't want a different launcher but with the wahed out crap at the bottom and the ugly search bar, this now works with a swipe to the left cheers.
Also just to add i am certain the phone is now unlocking faster with nova installed and ambient display disabled, it's win win all round.
i love nova, but the only reason i stick with the pixel launcher is because google can query the google weather API more reliably and frequently than third parties (like Nova) can, so the weather display is more accurate on google's pixel launcher

No No... Not just tried, just switched. I have used Nova for years but I got placement with the Pixel 2 XL.

Also can that be used not rooted, I don't want to root.
And does the modified launcher get rid of that ugly search bar ?
The search bar is not hideable with that rootless pixel launcher unfortunately and there's no mention of removing the white cloud at the bottom of the screen.... here's my nova setup, so much more room on the home screen.

I'm using Yo window weather app from the play store, was recommended to geoweather but it's crap, kept coming up with cannot connect to server for weather data stupid error, however this yo window has great reviews and works fantastic it's this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=yo.app.free
It does the job perfectly for me.

Rootless and modded pixel launcher are slightly different. The modded one has the option to remove the white
