newbie rooting assistance - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
I have a UK G2 D802. Purchased Sim free but put a UK T-Mob sim card in it.
It works great.
I would like some advice on how a complete novice like me can root the device, simply and easily.
My worry is that I will brick the device. However in my favour is the fact I can follow instructions and understand what I am doing.
Can anyone suggest a simple guide and simple to use software?
Thanks.

[Q]

Hello All,
I am new to Android. I am getting my Aira tomorrow, my first Android phone. I use to have HTC TyTn before. I have flashed many ROMs on that.
Can someone guide what should I do first after getting my phone? Means complete factory settings backup using which software? Which other modifications I can make? What will void warranty and what will not?
Is there any guide?
I am trying to read other threads.
Thanks,
Alex
PS: Can anyone tell me how can I activate it without SIM card and / or without data plan?
If you have had experience with a HTC TyTn, then you know that searching XDA Developers will be your best bet to getting your questions answered.
All of your questions have been discussed numerous times in the forum, so you should be able to find all the info you need. To start your customization venture, you will need to root your Aria, which is a very simple process using Unrevoked 3.

If you have access to a WiFi hotspot, you should be able to sign into Google Market without a SIM card using a wifi connection.

Need help with unlocking

Hi!
I plan to buy samsung galaxy S 2 from croatian T-mobile and I am really worried now to buy it after reading this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1064978&page=32
which said that on newer phones there is no unlocking method.
Problem is that I will buy it in croatian t-mobile and I planned to use it with TIM-IT italian sim card.
Is there any way to unlock that phone? rooting, changing roms, anyyyything.
Thank you a LOT!!
Root the phone then search the market for chainfires unlock tool. It worked perfectly for me and was unlocked within 2 minutes.
Didn't work for me, but Helmoz galaxy_s2 unlock app worked first time!

[Q] Can't Unlock AT&T SGH-I337 PLZ Help. Kind of Emergency

Hello everyone. First of all I want to say that this is a great forum with tons of valuable information. You guys do excellent jobs here. Now. I have a recently purchased S4 with AT&T. It is imperative that I get this phone unlocked TODAY. I am going in for surgery and my daughter is going to be left alone at home and I need her to have a phone to be able to contact me at the hospital if need be or in case of an emergency. I have tried all of the way that I have found on here to unlock this device and have not been successful. I cannot even get it Rooted. I tried with MotoChopper. I tried ODIN, King, and whatever the last one is. I have tried the *#0011# and it goes to the service menu but when I key in the number one, a screen flashes real quickly that says menu not exist. then back to the service screen. I do not know where to go from here. Can someone please assist me with a step by step tutorial on what needs to be done? I would be extremely grateful. I am standing by refreshing the page hoping for responses. Thanks!
I assume you want to sim unlock it? Do you know what firmware version you're on?

You're on nc1 firmware, look at your build number, it's the last three characters. Try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=54932702
You might have to down grade to nb1, idk for sure. If you have to there is an Odin flashable tar file in the general forum.

I tried everything in that thread also. I do not know how to downgrade. I also run a linux machine. i do not think that ODIN runs on Linux. Does it? Thank you for the rapid responses.

Odin won't run in Linux. You might be able to run it in a Windows vm. I'm not that familiar with Linux. Heimdall will run but I'm not familiar with that either. Sorry man. You could try Google and heimdall

Seems I am kind of screwed. Haimdall does run on Linux but it wont root my phone. it says that it did after I run it but then it's not. So weird.

Help me out guys,
Why do you need to root to be able to have daughter get ahold of you?
Why do you need to sim unlock? Are you on different carriers? Texting? etc
Can you get two prepaid phones that would work while in hospital?
Below links:
1. I used this to set up adb/fastboot on my iMac--need it to use Heimdall. I had some links to Heimdall, but must have deleted them. I can always use my son's Windows machine if needed--

2. Rooting with SafeStrap--

SafeStrap--

Those are complicated procedures and take time to learn w/o breaking your phone which you don't want to do atm.
With sim unlocking which is for using phone on another carrier I have no exp with. But, thought Obama passed law requiring carriers to give you that info. Otherwise, maybe someone else has done it on your model or Google alot.
Again, I am confused on why you need to sim unlock or root--sorry--
Hope you get it sorted in time--:good:

Cant unlock

Total noob, so any and all help very much appreciated. I had an issue with my phone not booting, so after lots of tricks and tips I was still stuck in a bootloop. I ended up finding an image and followed the instructions and voila my phone boots, all be it wiped and needing all apps and such installed. However I soon realized my phone is no longer unlocked. so now I cant use my Straight talk sim card. I need help ASAP if possible and more than willing to compensate anyone who can help me get my phone and txt messaging working again. Im pretty versed in PC stuff, as I work in IT, but I have never done any phone moding or flashing until now, so detailed explanations would be great, or if needed we can link up using a remote software program or FB. Thanks!

Meabrams, thanks for your reply but I am not sure what I need at this point. Not sure by what you mean by "big red", is that another site? I wish I could explain to somone over the phone what is going on, but have no resources to contact for this kind of help. I did to the process listed in the link: Tutorial] Unlock ALL bands on xt907 (moto_msm8960) with no success. I will check out the other post and see if I get any further. Any assistance or help you may know of is much appreciated. Im hoping to transfer my phone to temporary straight talk phone until this is fixed, just hope I dont have to send it off to someone.
Edit....Ok my device is rooted (dont know for sure but I have super user installed (full version of SU)) and I can play apps that are not Google approved. I tried the Motopocalypse and cant get any further. Does it matter what version of Android i have? currently this phone is on 4.4.2 BUT I dont really care if it stays on that version...Do I /Can I go back to the 4.1 version I had before? I believe it was the stock version of the phone's android system by not positive as i bought this phone unlocked. I would contact the seller but they have disappeared from ebay.

Flashing Firmware via Fastboot
You mentioned you are stucked at the initial setup screen. This implies that you need to reflash the stock ROM. Please visit this link to read my post containing instructables to successfully flash stock ROM.
Q. Can I unlock bootloader?
No. As of KDA 20.62 15.1 update, the Trust Zone vulnerability has been fixed which allowed exploit to work.
Q. Can I root?
Yes! Head to this thread to root (install SU) on your RAZR.
Q. Can I downgrade?
Unfortunately no! You are stucked permanently with the Kitkat flavour.
US GSM Carrier Unlock
The method is fairly long but easy. Head to the thread here to unlock US GSM carriers which will allow you use Straight Talk.

Dude, if you can't do a little research, then i strongly suggest you avoid attempting to modify your phone. Sorry to sound rude, im having a bit of a face palm moment from your question.
You're not sounding rude. A lot of people on this forum wants to be spoon-fed, and that's not going to help them in the long run. They need a smack on the head and get taught how to search.
If you can find a way of unlocking the bootloader you could give it a try. Probably brick you phone yes.

You will brick your phone. Don't do it.

Just do it and let us know what you think about you new paperweight
What do you mean "just do it"?
How would you do that when the bootloader is locked?

I think he was trying to point out that it should go without saying that you shouldn't even think about flashing other firmware than the one designed for your actual model. It never ends well.
I think he just wants to root his phone, and thinks that somehow this process involves getting the single sim firmware.
To be able to root you first need to unlock the bootloader. Currently only allowed by LG on the unbranded US and EU versions. NOT possible on any other version, unless someone finds an unofficial way around it in the future.
I haven't tried it, but I doubt you will brick it, most likely it will just reject it, but I agree it's not a good idea to try it without knowing.
All those guys talking about spoon feeding people... if you know the answer to the question just answer it, if you don't know the answer shut up.
I reached this thread doing research and rather than finding information I find your rant.
