TLDR: I was running TWRP 2.5.0.2 and Cyanogen 10.1.3. Cyanogen told me there was a stable update available, so I flashed it. Without checking the forums. Like an idiot. The following ensued:
It worked on the first boot. Every subsequent boot freezes on the 'Samsung S4' boot screen.
Things I tried in order:
* Reflashing 10.2 in TWRP (no change)
* Wiping everything but the SD card (no change)
* Same wipe, now restoring a 10.1.3 backup (no change)
* Odin 3.09 back to stock attempts:
- Detects the phone
- 'Phone EFS Clear checked' -> 'can't read the file'
- Re-Partition checked -> fails without a PIT file
- Re-Partition unchecked -> says there's no PIT partition
- Re-Partition check w/ PIT -> 'write fail'
- Re-Partition unchecked w/ PIT -> 'write fail'
This is with both MF9 and the original stock image. Windows 8 x64 and a different Windows 7 x64 system.
* Installed Kies. ADB'd into phone to find serial ('adb devices'). Kies still says it's invalid.
* Updated TWRP to 2.6.3. Now it hangs on the TeamWin screen. (seriously.)
* Attempted to flash two versions of CWM Recovery. Odin fails with "Write(fail)", always in the same place. Then it locked up partway into a write. Now TWRP doesn't even try to start; I get a message saying I need to fix the firmware in Kies.
* Changed out my high-dollar Monoprice cable with the crappy Samsung charger cable. Odin works again. Flashed CWM, then TWRP 2.6.3 again. Got into TWRP. The restore of my recent backup fails. Still freezing on the Samsung Galaxy S4 boot screen.
* Flashed old backup. This worked. Booting was normal.
* Flashed new backup over old backup. This is in process, but hasn't failed yet. Future plan is to Odin over CWM and made a new backup, because... wow.

Hi,
I'm at my wits end. I had SlimRom installed for a week and all was fine, but I was curious about what new ROMs were out there so I backed up my phone using ROM Manager and did all the usual stuff to get a new ROM. I installed Gummy, but didn't like it; I installed one other ROM that I can't remember its name, but also didn't like that. I realized my comfy home of SlimRom was where I wanted to be, so I tried to flash the backup.zip that I had created but it kept saying installation aborted (Status 0).
After hours of countless attempts and just weird behaviour (sometimes boot loops, sometimes not booting into recovery, etc.) I finally got my phone back to stock.
I downloaded the latest SlimRom file 3 times to make sure it wasn't a corrupt zip (twice from my PC and once from my phone directly). Both the zip directly from Slim as well as the backup.zip that I made with ROM Manager give me the same installation aborted. The other error it gives is "E: Error in /data/media/0/slim....zip". I'm wondering if somehow my partition is screwed up. I tried using Odin's repartition, which just erased my recovery partition, but I got that back thankfully! When I wipe data/factory reset it says wipe complete (and the ROM does reset to factory) but it also says "E:unknown volume '/sdcard/.android_secure' "...I'm wondering if that relates to why the backup.zip file won't read properly. Maybe the partition got screwed up somehow?
I can flash a SU zip so it's not a flashing problem, per se. And thankfully Odin always works!
I think I may need the stock PIT file for the Telus S4 l337m
UPDATE:
I think I found the proper pit (SGS-I337_16GB) but my phone says "secure check fail: pit".
This is my second Samsung. I have put over a dozen different ROMs on my old Exhibit II 4G. Having said that, I realize many of you know more than I could ever hope to know. That is why I'm posting here. I have searched, but most of my searches take me to announcements of new CWM and TWRP recoveries.
I've had a Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition for over a month and still did not have a nandroid backup, so last night I installed ClockworkMod ROM Manager with the intention of flashing CWM Recovery. The app did not list my phone, so I told it to show all devices, where I found the i9505 (I don't remember if it was the i9505g or not). I told it to flash ClockworkMod Recovery, and selected the option that I had not yet flashed CWMR. I then used QuickBoot to reboot into recovery, where I performed my first nandroid to the microSD card.
When I rebooted after making that nandroid, it went right back to ClockworkMod Recovery. Subsequent reboots did the same thing. I could get into Odin mode with VolumeDown+Home+Power. Using Odin v3.09 I was able to flash the stock recovery. This did not resolve the boot-loop issue. Now it boots into the stock recovery, which is less functional than CWM. To me it is behaving as if the recovery tools were flashed to the /boot/ partition, or something is telling it to always boot from the recovery partition.
-In stock recovery, it will download ADB installations (from "apply update from ADB"), but every attempt fails it's signature verification. I have tried 6+ files, all have failed. I believe that the device has USB debugging enabled, but I cannot check while in this state.
-Stock recovery does not mount the microSD card, so I cannot install from there. CWM would mount the microSD card, but I did not think to try installs from the microSD at that time. Is it possible that I installed the wrong stock recovery?
-I do not know how to perform an ADB "push" with my phone in this state. To be honest, I have never done an ADB push. If I get to that stage, where on my S4 should I send a pushed file? "/system/bin"?
-If I try an adb push in this mode
-How do I get my phone to boot from the proper partition?
-If I have the wrong data in that partition, how do I get the correct information onto that partition?
Here is what it does when I try to sideload from stock recovery:
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to verify while-file signature
E:failed to verify while-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted
Thank you in advance for any help!
Solved - i9505g soft-brick/boot-loop
My problem was resolved by flashing a stock recovery and ROM, found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2569510
The package named "I9505GUEUBML4_FULL_ROOTED.tar.md5.gz" flashed from Odin is what worked.
I have a soft bricked SGH-1337 from AT&T. I was running NJ4 firmware. I have installed Safestrap on it. I tried using SS to install a Touchwiz-based custom ROM, and it failed. Now if I try to boot the system by touching "continue" on the Safestrap boot screen, it just turns off and restarts (this is a boot loop, right?).
So basically, this is what I've tried. First I tried doing a wipe. I got this error
Code:
E : Unable to mount '/system'
. Then I tried doing an advanced wipe, same error. I tried format. Same error. I went to Mount and tried mounting /system, but it won't mount.
I tried using Safestrap to install the backup I made (with SS). No luck. Then I tried making a ROM slot (I had been using the stock slot) to see if that would work. It didn't. Then I tried using Odin to flash the NJ4 firmware. Nope. Then I tried flashing witha PIT file. All of them caused Odin to fail when "re-partition" was checked except the one I've attached. I tried flashing with just the PIT file, the PIT file and the stock NJ4, and with "re-partition" checked and unchecked. Nothing works. The phone keeps rebooting and failing to mount /system.

Today i downgraded galaxy S4 i9500 to stock 4.4.2 and now the phone is not detecting any sim card:crying:
Here is the entire story-
1. The phone was updated to 5.0.1 from stock 4.4.2 via OTA update months ago
2. I tried flashing twrp2.8.7_i9500.img.tar using Odin-v3.10 (download mode by hardware buttons). Odin showed green pass but the phone remained untouched. Repeated several times using differnt twrp and odin versions but got the same result
3. Flashed cf-auto-root_i9500.tar.md5 using odin (download mode by adb command); result= successful root
4. flashed philz_touch_v6.0.0.8_i9500.tar.md5 via odin3.07 (download mode by adb command): succeeded
5. flashed EuphoriaOSv1.1 by blaquedroid using philz recovery after wiping cache, data, dalvik,; succeeded, sim card was detected
6. due to camera bug in euphoriaOS, i flashed cm-12.1-20151015-NIGHTLY-i9500.zip (from recovery i did "wipe>CLEAN TO INSTALL A NEW ROM" and the did wipe cache, data, dalvik ); succeeded, everything was fine, sim card was detected.
7. i thought custom rom will help reduce heating issue but i was wrong; So i finally decided to DOWNGRADE to stock 4.4.2
8. From philz i wiped cache, data, dalvik then rebooted to OS
9. Flashed stock 4.4.2 (I9500XXUFNE4_I9500YDDFNE1_I9500DDUFNA4_HOME.tar.md5) via odin_v3.07 (download mode by adb command) and after around 30 min the odin showed the green pass and fone rebooted (lost philz, expected)
10. To my surprise, the phone is now not detecting any sim card; baseband unknown, *#06# on dialer returned 'IMEI null/null.
11. I rooted ( method:line 3) again and installed root explorer and i saw efs folder was still present so i copied it to my computer (i didnt knew about efs backup)
12. I reflashed stock 4.4.2 via odin_3.07 (download mode by hardware buttons); odin showed green pass but the phone remained untouched, nothing was actually flashed
13. I then reflashed philz, wiped cache, data, dalvik, then reflashed cm12.1 zip; succeeded, but sim NOT DETECTED. Moreover the efs folder is now MISSING !!! :crying:
14. I tried to manually copy the efs folder (i had saved it to my pc) using root explorer and changed the permissions, rebooted to recovery, made efs backup, rebooted to system, but the folder deleted automatically from root directory. Tried copying efs folder several times but after reboot it is deleting everytime.
Currently i have the phone with cm12.1 installed but without /efs and blank IMIE and "unknown" baseband. i dont own this fone so i need to fix it asap
NOTE: in the past i have downgraded Galaxy S3, moto e and htc pico but nothing like this ever happened.
You have two options.
1. Either flash Lollipop modem.
2. Or reflash stock Lollipop rom.

did cwm and twrp backups of efs. thanks man
Hi everyone,
I posted this thread in general troubleshooting category and after some advice, I decided to post it in the S4 section.
I was since 3 years on custom ROM (CM and Lineage OS) and due to substratum, I had a bootloop.
My problem is quite particular, after a total clean (wipe and format cache, system, data, dalvik cache) of my device and flashing the stock ROM, custom recovery cause me some trouble.
Whatever I try (CWM touch 6 or TWPR 3.1.1), I can't flash custom ROM (Lineage OS 14.1), TWPR or CWM crash 1 second after the flash command and reboot, with disable touchscreen and even by using old navigation way and try again, same problem.
Tried also to disable file signature check but no effect.
Quick summary about what I did:
- Device: Samsung Galaxy S4 (GT-I9505)
- ROM stock used: I9505XXUHOJ2 ( the build on which is based the CF-Root file I used) and Bulgarian version due to mistake.
- I tried on these two ROM with in the two cases, no patch or Samsung ROM update made.
- Tried to install CWM by ROM Manager and ODIN (v3.09)
- TWPR installed by TWPR App using file in .img and not the second option (tar.img) for LTE Internationnal Qualcomm.
-Checked the root before last attempt with root checker and it was ok.
- Made 4 times already the clean and Stock ROM flash to clean recovery and try another way to install it (never had error after recovery install).
Actually I'm on the OJ2 Rom with update and patch delivered by Samsung with classic method.
In advance thanks for your help and I really hope it's not too serious.
By the way, sorry for my english, it's not my native language
Try flashing the stock ROM from sammobile.com or updato.com, don't root, use Odin 3.07 to flash the tar version of TWRP 2.8.7, try flashing a custom ROM.
Thx for the help/advice
Just to be sure, my stock ROM is actually from up updato.com but due to the patch and Samsung update I'm now on HPK2.
Here the detail of my stock ROM

(the integrated image link option made it as large as the moon so I prefer a simple link)
TWPR 2.8.7 is still efficient or another version would be better ?
If yes, I will try in the hour and I will give you news as soon as possible
EDIT: After some research, TWPR 2.8.7 jfltexx is not avaible in .tar , only .img and impossible to find it on net...
But 2.8.6 and 2.8.4 are avaible in .tar and 3.0.0 in .img.tar , which one is the best ?
I suggested 2.8.7 because Ihave used it in the past and it was very stable. Try a newer tar version. It's really just to see if the phone will take TWRP and boot it.
Whatever I try (TWRP 3.0.0 and 3.0.1 in .img.tar for jlftexx)
Odin (v3.07) do the job , my phone reboot as normal.
But when I shutdown it and lauch in recovery by manual way, got during a micro seconds the android logo of loading and intant "No commands " and I end on the stock recovery.
Edit: I will try the same method with Odin using CWM tar (never had problem with it before this day)
Same thing with CWM-v6.0.4.7-Touch-GT-I9505.tar
Android loading logo and "No command detected"
Problem solved
Well, I don't know how I made a sucess but it seems the "wild" method worked.
So here is the list of things I did in case somepne got the same trouble
Put your Zip file on SD AND Internal Memory (in case)
All the Zip files I used where on my internal storage during this procedure.
- Download mode:
uncheck Auto Reboot in Odin
flash TWRP3.0.1.0 jlftexx.img.tar with ODIN in admin mode
turn off device after flash ended
Obligation or the stock recovery will return automatically !
Lauch device in recovery mode:
If it's TWRP good news, slide to confirm modifications.
Recovery mode:
-Wipe --> Advanced Wipe--> Select Cache, Dalvik Cache, Sytem and Data (never check internal and SD storage)
I tried by mistake without wiping dalvik cache, and got no boot after 5 minutes so i made it again with all the wipe above
-Install --> Flash zip of the rom and Gapps (got an error at zip signature check on the ROM so I flashed after uncheck this option)
-Reboot --> System
Let your device launch on the new rom, set the basic parameters and after, if you want, return in recovery to flash the SU addon for root (got also zip sugnature fail so I ahd to uncheck it again)
Hoping no one will ever had the same problem but in case, I share my solution
Thanks again for help
