TWRP at last! Custom ROMs around the corner :) - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) General

Woohoo ... been checking almost daily to see if someone had ported TWRP or CWM to my shiney new Note 2K14 edition, so I finally could have a go at compiling my own ROM (being able to restore backups is vital here)
Currently in the process of creating a rom based of the MJ6 release (it's being packaged as I type this).
Changes made:
Rooted
BusyBox installed
Init.d added
Data/app trick (should allow for uninstalling system apps)
De-odexed
Added (I know this might annoy some folks, but hey .. if it does, build your own rom):
Latest XBMC for Android
Amazon Appstore
Adblock Plus
Removed:
All KNOX stuff
FOTAClient
Most of the Samsung stuff (nothing S-pen related tho)
Allshare
NYTimes
Peal
Uggly ass yahoo widgets and so on
Ofcourse I'll be my own guinea pig ... however ... I am posting this in case anyone is interested in the rom or wants to help test.

Forgot to mention a few things
The ROM is based of the latest official rom for the Netherlands (P600XXUBMJ6), it is reduced in size by 850Mb, probably can win more here but I need to test what else can be removed without breaking the ROM
And added init.d scripts for various tweaks (like lower interval wifi scan, improved mount options and so on).
If this ever gets listed as real ROM I'll document better

You are more then welcome
I dubbed for a while whether I wanted to risk tripping the Knox-bit.. in the end I figured the only real drawback (for me anyway) is the lost warranty .. and TBH I never have had to depend on warrany with all my previous Samsung devices (S, S2, S4, Note 10.1 N8010), although the S2 died exactly on the day the warranty expired
Well ..packaging and signing completed, zip pushed to my SD. I am about to give my first rom ever a whirl ... .. fingers crossed and hope I do not brick my shiney new tablet

You can get root w/o tripping knox, but you'll trip it when you install a custom recovery, which means no custom rom for you.

Lol, well ... I did never get to flash my rom (yet).
TWRP messed up cache partition on wiping and I got stuck on a nice Samsung logo...
Tried some stuff but none worked ... in the ended up reflashing stock rom.
After that I flashed TWRP again and then, luckily I have learned from my errors in the past, I restored the backup I made before starting the experiment...

can you add aroma to allow for options? especially the option to swap csc to select country. some apps and stuff get weird if you're from the wrong region.

@madsquabels: Aroma is on my wish-list... but first I want a stable rom... managed to fix the rebooting issue and also drasticly improved boot time and responsiveness. But untill TWRP issues are resolved (it destroying the cache partition on wiping) I can't test the installer ... the updater script did not get to run because mounting of /cache failed.
Will give it another try later today. When and if I pass the cache wiping hurdle next focus will be on the installer script

Thanks for this. I look forward to what you come up with.
I was wondering though, the stuff you're adding to the rom, will those be uninstallable if we don't need them?

Yes, they will be uninstallable... I plan to integrate the so-called /data/app patch just for this (uninstalling packages which technically reside in the /system/app folder) purpose.
However ... I might still decide against Amazon AppStore ... AdBlock and XBMC are going in though.. this tab has more then enough horsepower to function as media-center and XBMC beats the rest of the players/centers by miles

Amazon is available in Play Store and in our TIBU, if we need it. Please make XBMC optional, along with the other bloat. (I don't want it.)
Thanks.

OMG you are right, bummer, did not test XBMC thoroughly before, asumed it be fine since it worked flawlessly on my old Note 10.1. Hehe, well, you know what they say, the assumption is the mother of all ****ups. So thanks for alerting me!
Tested the latest nightly, which did have proper sound, but the video was offset. Testing the alphas now, but won't put in a non-stable release so XBMC is out too for now. A shame... I love XBMC.
---
Anyway,
since I still have some issues with the updater-script and identified some more removable stuff, I was going to have to rebuild and retest the flashing anyhow.

It didn't even hit the market until today, and most people are at work.
It'll take a day or two, but it'll come. I may be purchasing tonight (not guaranteed), and I'll start work on CM10 - with CWM coming first.
Doing it PROPERLY will take a few days especially since I have a visitor coming this weekend.

CWM root method for GT-N8000 is 100% compatible with wifi version, just confirmed:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1831152
Right now my focus will be, for N8013:
Do system dump of all system content with read permissions (this is almost everything, but missing a few files)
Root the system dump, package as Odin/Heimdall-flashable
Flash rooted dump
Use rooted dump to obtain a dump of all partitions (this enables obtaining a raw stock image of recovery and kernel - The Euro devices already have firmware packages available, US devices often have to dump stock firmware from devices.)
From there, the kernel work starts
I'll be picking up my device tonight, assuming that it doesn't sell out.
what about the n8010 version.

Simple Root?

I have never rooted and am scared to do so but I really want and need the ability to use more apps in the multi-window setting. Is there a simple/basic root for me as I don't really care about any other features that rooting brings to the table?
Google is my friend. I'm rooted now and Multi window is as it should be.

Sorry, like I said I'm a total rookie at rooting a device and most of the threads I've seen just don't make sense to me. In fact it took a little while for me to figure out how to even extract the files needed to root the device. I ended up downloading an extraction program to my PC. It was free and did a great job!

You've got to read the pages about universal root de la vega, that's how i managed to root my note 10.1 2014, and the result is very good. You should succeed in doing that cause i achieved to do it without being a native english speaker. After having root your device you can enable all the apps working with multi windows by using Wanam Xposed and multi window manager. You can use Gmd gesture as well, it's very useful to get all the ipad like gestures on the note. Good luck! (If you've got a pc with windows 7 you should install Cygwin64 Terminal to "make" your personal Rooted firmware).

This.
Multi-window is what really sets the Samsung Notes apart as productivity devices, being able to extend the apps that run under multi-window was my main reason for routing. There are a couple of apps that I use that aren't at the best in multi-window, but they still work for my needs, I don't need nannying!

They need to be careful because Windows 8.1 tablets do it perfectly on all apps out of the box. And for non rooting people who are looking for ease this just ain't easy.
Besides why start with the walled garden effect of Apple by preventing things that could/should work to just the rooters/jailbreakers!
I've heard that rooting this device irreversibly voids your warranty even if you go back to stock and you will no longer receive updates from Samsung. Is this true?

Yes, and no. Yes, rooting will void your warranty. It will activate the Knox counter. However, after rooting, flash stock recovery. Be sure to update to the latest firmware before rooting. Updating may cause you to loose root. Be sure to freeze, not delete Knox apps after rooting. The update may look for those. There are a lot of differing opinions on this.

Ok now I'm second guessing myself on rooting my Note. Can someone please post a link so that I can unroot it? LOL
My desire at this point is to unroot and factory reset and setup as a new tablet. I do not like the fact that it will not update. Yes I knew this going in so I'm not complaining I'm just changing my mind.
The only reason that I rooted was to get 3-4 apps on multi-window that do not currently work on multi-window. The root process did fix that for me but I just don't believe it to be worth it in the long run so if possible I wish to undo what I've done.
Dupe Post Sorry!
Mickey, First I would try to install OTA Rootkeeper, backup root and then do a temp unroot. See if this allows you to update. If so, then restore root after the update.
OK, nix that - OTA Rootkeeper is not 4.3 compatible due to security changes.
Have a look here and use ODIN to flash back to stock. http://www.tsar3000.com/Joomla/inde...sing-odin3-program&catid=57:how-to&Itemid=104 This will wipe all data on your tablet. Be sure to use an app like MyBackup to back up your apps and data: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rerware.android.MyBackup It is free for 30 days and works well.

Going back won't fix warranty problem, it's now done, cannot change the counter. I'd say not to worry about updates. When update is available, there will be many helpful posts here for rooted devices. I got the tablet on October 1st, rooted on first day root was available. And I updated it after that when Samsung released 3rd update.

I do a lot of traveling and this is a great solution for watching movies, when it works. My WiDi device is fairly small and connects to the TV with HDMI. Since WiDi is a direct connect between divices and doesn't depend on the local wifi it works much better than Google ChromeCast.

Flashed the stock recovery and miracast is working again. So this means we can't load up TWRP?
That is correct. If we can get support for mobile odin then it might be possible to quick swap between the two on the go. As it is I would reccomend making a backup in twrp then reflashing stock recovery. Then if you need to restore just plug up to odin and flash twrp again. They did mention that whatever it was should be fixable to work with twrp. So if they get a fix it should be easy to port over to ours.

Thx for the fix post. I am going to do it this weekend when i have sometime encase of an unforeseen issues.... But just so i am clear. I am rooted already and when i flash this will anything be lost-such as settings or any of the Xposed modules etc. If so, any suggestions on a backup method...
We had similiar story on Note 10.1 2012 (N80xx).
No AllShare Cast (old name sammy was using for today's Screen Mirroring...) when custom recovery OR KERNEL (there isn't any yet on NP12s but surely - when it arrives - it will fed up all the users of mirroring... kernel OR mirroring...). Well, getting into technical details, coz I think here we'll hava similiar history:
- tablet - to work with Mirroring - had needed a flash counter reset to zero (using Triangle Away - did u try this one out? I borrowed my dongle to a friend so for a while can't test it...). The reason is that sammy's forced the software to require HDCP to every content possible, even my own screen... - and using HDCP was available only with use of Trusted Zone (mysterious tz.bin partition in sammy's devices...). When flash counter was zero, device had an access to tz and all was working. But...
- standard bootloader was very unkind for modders - if detected custom kernel OR custom recovery, it automatically triggered the counter every boot, so there was no way to effectively reset the counter with custom recovery or kernel. There was some ideas of avoiding this limitation like creating shortcuts to scripts that were flashing kernels and recoveries on the fly, etc, but it still required to reset the counter with Triangle Away (which was and still is performed NOT on-the-fly on the stock kernel, but requires flashing chainfire's custom "kernel + something" and rebooting into the custom boot screen with big danger sign and asterisk etc etc - takes time and sounds dangerous...)
- finally someone found out that flashing the oldest bootloader possible (dunno if it wasn't even a ICS one?) is a brilliant fix for this situation - this bootloader didn't have flash counter auto-trigger mechanism when non-stock recovery or kernel. I use it since today in that device - that is why I do worry flashing last-week kitkat leak, which requires new bootloader... anyway...
- ...Note Pros won't have ICS bootloaders, of course, BUT there was another fix floating around for other devices like s3 and note 2 (never been ported to N80xx, tho..) - a modded libWFD.so library in /system/lib to force turning off HDCP once and for all. It started from Android 4.2+, required disassembling the lib and messing with some assembly code at first (!), however, after difficult beginnings, further mods for different systems and roms were possible more easily, by editing similiar hex patterns in similiar way in the library binary content (and it was not extremely tiring as it required ediiting only three bytes IN TOTAL!).
Hope the last solution will be brought to our devices in the nearest future as it solves the problem in an ultimate way (eh... at least until there comes an update with major changes, causing lib not to work...).

Sadly our device does not have the wfdengine.lib. None of the kitkat devices appear to. I do know from reading on the 2014 Forum that hdcp was the Culprit. Hopefully work can be done to twrp to allow its use without breaking this feature

Screen Mirror fixed!!
Thanks to a few guys in the 2014 threads I have finally found a fix for screen mirroring. It is simple and easy to do. simply boot into download mode, hook up to odin and reflash the stock recovery and your done! Using my screen beam pro while posting this right now. If you need the stock recovery it can be found here

Please advise, I will have to convert the recovery.img file to a recovery.tar.md5 file in order to flash using odin, correct?
I am about to buy a Miracast receiver (probably a Netgear PTV3000) but both my Note II and Note Pro 12.2 are rooted.
I run stock Touchwiz ROMs with stock recoveries, so will Miracast work?
This thread has confused me a bit because I thought that even though you have root, as long as you are running a stock ROM and the stock recovery you would be able to use Miracast.
BTW I have seen mentioned elsewhere that with Samsung Allshare Cast you ALSO have to have "Flash Binary" at zero (which at the moment I have on the Note II thanks to Triangle Away but I haven't on the Note Pro since AFAIK I can't run Triangle Away on it nor I will be able to use Triangle Away on my Note II once I update it to 4.3 or KitKat) and that's why I am going with the Netgear or with the Asus dongle.
Anybody can shed some (definitive) light on these issues..? TNX

I have written it two posts above.
As far as I can see at the moment, TA works fine with Note Pro 12.2 (at least on a Qualcomm one...).
EDIT:
Here's libwfds.so for Note Pro 12.2 LTE P905, modified by me (based on XXUANC3 stock firmware, can't guarantee it will work on any other firmware than this one..), it seems to work with custom recovery (repacked, not-yet-fully-working TWRP).
Just put it in /system/vendor/lib and replace previous one (also, make sure permissions are 644, root:root).
http://www28.zippyshare.com/v/17510448/file.html
IT WILL PROBABLY NOT WORK ON EXYNOS DEVICES (P900 etc).

I can confirm that this in fact DOES work...not only only that but it SHOULD be good to go for ANY device with a snapdragon 800 running 4.4.2. I'm actually using it on the LTE variant of the tab pro 8.4 and everything is ok...i tested it for a full 2 hours the other night with TWRP installed & didnt have any problems besides an occassional hiccup when trying to connect. For anybody reading this...i'm not sure if the order is important but i replaced the above file BEFORE i flashed the custom recovery although that shouldnt matter. Also...u MAY need to wipe both caches after u install

Really thanks for being so helpful man, but there lies the problem, I can't get a Miracast setup and be at the constant risk that an update breaks it..

S5 rooted, now what?

I have never run a stock OS rooted. Always AOKP or CM. What should we do now?
-How to we protect it to make sure VZW doesn't somehow patch it?
-Tethering without Foxfi now possible. See below.
-SuperSu info - see below.
-What will we need to do about updates?
-What else?
Read below. I'm adding helpful info as it is collected.

If you need to root your S5, go here. Donate as well! http://towelroot.com/
** No, Root does not allow us to unlock the bootloader. They are entirely different. I personally have not heard of anyone working on that. Most knowledgeable people I have heard say it would require a leak of the keys from Verizon. **
***Below are apps and/or tweaks (not obvious ones) known to work by me or someone else that has tested***
-Xposed Framework
----X Tether (Free tethering)!
----Wanam Xposed - Free tethering option does NOT work for me. Others report it does.
-Super SU 2.0 in Play store now works. Link below no longer needed.

Did you install SU before or after rooting? Or had that problem, stupid me in the antisapation of having root I installed SU last night and after rooting just now could not for the life of me get it to update SU, after multiple reboots I finally uninstalled it after clearing the cache and app settings in app manager, rebooted then reinstalled, then ran root checker, it failed then it asked for root, granted, rechecked, and it passed!

logically, you should avoid any vzw updates. SU may fail, but it still works. try running a rooted app. it will ask you to grant permission. I just removed over 12 apps that vzw forced on my phone.

Rename SDM.apk and SDM.odex. to .bak files and VZW can't use the OTA updater anymore. The software updater in settings will be gone too. You will need a file explorer like fx and the root add on for this, it's free.
EDIT: SDM.apk is in the system/app driectory.
Safestrap is next: you'll be able to run custom ROMs but not custom kernels, so TW builds but not AOSP (unless the S5 GPE is built on a TW kernel, as the original 4.2.2 S4 GPE ROM was). I wouldn't actually delete any APKs from your device; just freeze them with Titanium.

- Isis Wallet
and a few more that I cannot remember. I hope this helps.

Two of the more useful features (I believe) are:
1) native tethering -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2768837
2) download booster -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2719582
There's no concept of recovery, so it would involve uploading the files via adb or some other means and running the scripts via terminal emulator/adb
(1) involves replacing framework-res.apk with the packaged copy -- last time I tried to attempt something like that with a live filesystem I ended up with a bootloop I couldn't resolve and had to reflash the stock ODIN, which I don't want to do at this time.
You can also enable the hidden menus via the phone dialer after root -- change /efs/carrier/HiddenMenu to ON

I have not. From the updater script on the 2.1 ODEX zip file on that thread it's replacing these files:
/system/framework/services.jar
/system/framework/services.odex
/system/priv-app/SecSettings.apk
/system/priv-app/SecSettings.odex
I briefly looked through the thread and I don't believe the author of the mod specifically mentioned what the changes he did are. I'd prefer getting the original files from my own phone, extracting/decompiling the contents, making the relevant changes, packaging them back up and replacing them on the phone (after making backups). I'm also lazy, so i'll probably leave that to someone else.

Apparently xposed framework with X Tether module will do it, according to some replies on the thread I linked to above in post #12.

Thanks for understanding and for helping to keep XDA neat and tidy!
Will NU work with non NU
I am going to buy this tablet in a few weeks and I live in Australia and the model here does not have NU at the end but just T330. Will this ROM and any other NU ROM work with my tablet? Sorry for the noob question, but I am new to the tablet.

To be honest, I'm not 100% sure. It should, the only difference between the T330 and the T330NU that I've been able to find is the T330NU has an IR blaster so it can be used as a remote control. No kernel is included with the ROM, so you are more than safe to install it after making a backup. If it works, let me know. If not, Ill figure out why and make it compatible.

Should I make a backup through CMW or through the settings?
Once I get the device which like I said is in 3 weeks, I will try the device out for about a week to see how it works and get used to it and then backup and install the ROM and compare it to the stock and then post my comments on the forum.

CWM or TWRP. Either one will work. As long as you have a backup of your system partition in one of those you will be good to go. Sounds good, I'll be waiting.
Hopefully there will be a few more updates by that time. I keep getting errors when decompiling SecSettings which is pissing me off. I'll just have to keep at it until I figure it out. Doesn't make any sense to me.
Sounds good, the more updates the better!
As with the error's you are getting, I have no idea what your talking about, so I'l just agree

Lol. Its all good. I got it figured out. What I was working on was enabling S5 Settings Mod in SecSettings.apk (aka. Settings on Samsung devices). Its not finished but it works more than well enough so its in the new SuperStocked version.
So I have received my tablet early and it was easier than I thought to use it, so I have decided to install your ROM, I have already installed TWRP v2.8.3.0 and it works and I am currently backing up my tablet to my external sd card and then I will attempt to try and install the Superstocked.
Do you want me to try out both of your rom's?
I have flashed superstock and I have a few problems, when i flashed it had an error with unmounting or something like that and the keyboard is not very good it looks like android 4.2 keyboard and I do not have root access. I tried towelroot but i still do not have root access.
I think I will go back to 100% stock.

If you happen to flash it again in the future, could you copy the recovery log so I can see the unmounting error. Its Advanced > Copy log to SD. I don't know what could have caused that but I doubt it had any effect on the ROM after booting.
As for the keyboard. It defaults to looking like 4.2 keyboard but with a number row because the ROM is kitkat. If you go into the keyboard settings you can change the theme to the material design themes.
I've been having a lot of issues with root. The su binaries are included as well as all the su files. It works fine for some people and it doesn't for others. Flashing the latest SuperSU will give you root. I'll add a link to it in the OP later today and mention root issues.
I have installed the stock v1.2 and I am still having root problems, if you can provide the su package I will try that out.
What I meant yesterday was in twrp when I was formatting the message was
E: error sending message to add storage 65537
Also I am wondering if it is alright to close or disable some system apps that are using ram such as
DeviceTest
SmartcardService

PageBuddyNotiSvc
ELM Agent
Nearby devices
Unified Daemon
If so, how would I go about doing it?

I have installed the stock v1.2 and I am still having root problems, if you can provide the su package I will try that out.
What I meant yesterday was in twrp when I was formatting the message was
E: error sending message to add storage 65537
Also I am wondering if it is alright to close or disable some system apps that are using ram such as
DeviceTest
SmartcardService
Context Service
PageBuddyNotiSvc
ELM Agent
Nearby devices
Unified Daemon

Here's the SuperSU flashable zip:

The error you saw in TWRP was an error from trying to mount and unmount MTP. It happens on all of our devices but doesn't affect anything. So no worries when you see it.
If you want to disable/freeze apps you can use an app from the play store like Greenify or Titanium Backup. Titanium Backup can also remove system apps but I wouldn't recommend doing that without making a backup of the app you want to remove first.
However, if you just want to disable some services but not the entire app you can download and use Disable Service from the play store.
Thanks for clearing the meaning of that error. I have flashed the su zip and I now have root.
Lastly, is possible to reset the flash counter, so if I take my tablet in for repair my warrnty will be valid?

That I'm not sure of. I imagine there is but I haven't looked into trying any of the reset counters made for other Samsung devices on the T330/NU. You would probably need to make your own thread and ask in the help section.
My device was seller refurbished so I don't have a warranty. Otherwise I could probably help you out.
I talked to samsung about the knox thing and I was told I still had a 1yr warranty from purchase date no matter what.
Really? Samsung put implemented knox so people wouln't flash rom's but they don't care! Something doesn't seem right here. I'll believe you and just hope that nothing happens to my tablet, just in case they change their mind.

Yeah, I was hoping Viper4Android would work on our devices in compatability mode since selinux is enforcing. I haven't had time to actually test it myself, but I did notice that it did ask for a driver install even though I preinstalled and registered the audio driver.
To be honest, street view and face unlock are from paranoid android gapps. I've integrated PA gapps into our ROM over the included gapps. DropboxOOBE I kept because I assumed that was the apk that gave people 50GB of Dropbox space, if not I'll remove it.
Some things I didn't remove because I couldn't find information on them. I only removed stuff I knew was safe to remove. I'm working on getting a kernel with at least init.d by unpacking, editing, and repacking but I'm not planning on trying to find the source and compile a new kernel.

It may be possible that they as a manufacturer don't care. When I had my Motorola I was told by them that they could care less if you rooted it or installed a custom ROM. The manufacturer warranty was applicable either way, it was the carriers that cared and charged for replacements of rooted devices. I have no idea if that applies to Samsung, but its possible I guess.
Samsung devices also include Knox for the enterprise and security. So a company can purchase Samsung devices and guarantee their devices and network aren't compromised. The NSA even said that Knox was secure enough for the government to use it.

You would need to contact Samsung yourself to find out. My device has no warranty. I'm sailing solo lol.
