I have yet to order my hdx 8.9, but I'm 100% it will not have the purple haze problem that plagues the smaller model. It uses white leds instead of the blue leds in the 7 model as you can see in the following test. Note the kindle fie hdx 8.9 currently has the best panel on the market and beats even the iPad air and the older nexus 10.

Liking my 8.9 a lot. Also glad that there is no blue or purple haze problem at the edges.
I will be purchasing one next month. Glad I am putting the extra money into the 8.9" over the 7". My current tablet is a Nook Tablet from 2 years ago and it is really time for an upgrade and the screen size is slightly small for me so having a 8.9" will still be portable for me and give me that little extra room I need and glad to see it does not suffer the same issues as the smaller one does.
How's gaming performance on 3D games like asphalt 8 and dead trigger? Just wondering if the snapdragon can handle such a high resolution smoothly?
I had the blue haze on one edge of my 7" hdx but it seems to have gone away after about 2 weeks of use.

I have the HDX 8.9, there is no blue haze, though some normal white screen bleed. I don't have dead trigger, but Asphalt 8 runs without a hiccup.

Screen bad
Two hex 8.9 both blue smears on screen with dark colors
I have two tablet from Amazon (HDX 8.9) and Samsung (Tab S 10.5, who bought after locking HDX and when he realized that the problem HDX HBULK 9008 will not work quickly to solve -Amazon does not publish a way to restore and it does not offer himself)
the choice of the tablet I've read DisplayMate http://www.displaymate.com/OLED_Tablet_ShootOut_1.htm
HDX was 1 flare and purple screen instead black, Tab S 10.5 was real black screen and 0 flare
perhaps I was so "lucky", but besides subjectively better screen, Tab s 10.5 has also normal PlayMarket

how does the galaxy tab's screen compare to the xoom's? or even the ipads ips screen
I am hearing it is the best screen on any tab available today, though the colors are oversaturated in Samsung fashion, but there is virtually no light bleed that is present on IPS screens, and viewing angles are exceptional.
XOOM does not hold a stick against it - I have a Transformer with an IPS screen, and it leaves XOOM screen in dust.
oh wow i didnt know the transformer had a ips screen... i wonder if im ever going to see that one at bestbuy
I tested out the Tab yesterday, the screen quality was bloody brilliant, clearly the BEST screen I've ever seen on a tablet, I'd choose the Super PLS over IPS anyday - loved the colors and viewing angles on it !!
any one has side by side comparison of the ipad2 ips screen and galaxy tab 10.1 pls screen?
Check out Anandtech's review of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 from today:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4445/samsung-galaxy-tab-101-review/6
There's details on the screen vs the Eee Pad Transformer vs the iPad 2 vs the Xoom vs the BlackBerry PlayBook.
Anyone have comments on the quality of the LE versus retail?
Supercurio got his 10.1 today and he's been developing for the Transformer the last couple weeks. He says the 10.1's screen is art while the IPS is on the Transformer is just a screen. A lot of tweets basically suggesting that he likes the 10.1 better, period.
https://twitter.com/#!/supercurio
how does the 10.1 retail compare to the 10.1v
and 10.1 i/o edition?
also how does it compare to the ipad2 ips screen. any user experiences

Thats awesome. I'd still like to hear LE vs Retail comparisons
Coming from Nook Color and Blackberry Playbook I was quite underwhelmed by the screen. Perhaps my expectations were unrealistic but it didn't blow me away or anything and I'm missing the "sharpness" and text rendering quality from the above devices. I guess the size of the screen is here to blame and it might look better on the 8.9 version but 10.1 is not "amazing".
The screen on the PlayBook is better than the Galaxy Tab 10.1 on paper at least (my earlier post in this thread had specs for both), so perhaps not "amazing" when speaking relatively but for most people it should be.
The Galaxy Tab 10.1 display model at Best Buy looked great... Until I turned off auto-brightness and turned it up a bit: then it looked awesome!
After that I went to look at the Xooms on display and was vastly underwhelmed. It's a night and day difference. The Galaxy Tab's screen is much brighter and has more vivid colors and better contrast. It's like comparing the screen of a Nexus One to that of an HTC Magic (except for the resolution, which is the same on both tablets).
it's definately the best btw the transformer and xoom. it's gets brighter than my ipad and the dimmest setting is the lowest of them all - great for night time reading!
it is quite saturated, but it makes comics pop. the oversaturated colors are a help when watching movies in indirect or bright lights since the lights kill viewability and alter color perception.
I agree; it's definitely the best screen to date on a tablet this size. When it comes to movies, the details are incredible (specifically 720p mp4 rips. Haven't tried any other formats). I'm a video enthusiasts and am very picky about the screens, too. Supercurio says he'll be able to implement an app for the screen to take the color down a bit for those that prefer a more natural color reproduction. I actually like the colors.
Can't wait to see the PenTile screens.
I got a white note 10.1 on thursday from john lewis after really wanting the grey but I thought they didnt stock it , it was smooth and the screen was perfect
I spoke to a colleague who said tgey did the grey so I went and swapped it wow what a mistake .
The s pen isnt as responsive , the grey lags and I have really bad screen bleed which ive enclosed in a pic
Question do the grey and white have different sceen manufacters ? Or am I unlucky
Ive emailed john lewis to tell them and gonna swap it back to the white one I had
Thought id share the screen bleed

Makes me wonder where you folks are getting all these devices with issue. I got my gray 32GB Note from Amazon and it's perfect. No bleed, creaking, or flex. Great device.
My Grey one is perfect too,So glad i returned the Asus TF700 for this tablet which came with dead pixels
I'd say you're just unlucky. Screen bleed is pretty rare on this device, unlike other devices like the ASUS Transformer series or some (but not all) of the Acer Iconia series.
I personally prefer the look of the white, and it matches my white Galaxy S2 (which I think is beautiful).
I have had the Note 10.1 since Oct 25th and have had no issues until today. I have light bleed on the upper left corner that I never noticed until now. I noticed it only because I was watching Hulu. I may end up returning it since I hate light bleed. I had a lot of experience coming from the Prime and Infinity its not as bad as those but still annoying to see.

Get it replaced it is a faulty piece it could have happened with a white one also nothing major, I think light bleeds are something that is constant nowdays wonder why because which the technology leaps this should be something that should never happen at the same time something that does not affect the device
i have note 10.1 white and made in korea
i have small light bleed in the corner behind home button , but i cant see it only can see in very black screen other than that my tablet is very good with good quality
To all who have screen bleed issues, screen bleed and the un uniformity of black color is normal for LCD panels up to a certain limit so not any bleed is considered a defect , only bleeds that make white cloud on colorful backgrounds is considered a defect

First of all, I love this tablet. The only complaint that I have is that compared to my 2 previous 2012 Nexus 7s (now sold) and my Nexus 4, the new Nexus 7 I just received yesterday has a rather different color temperature. Whites aren't white -- instead, it has a yellowish tint to it.
Are any of you guys experiencing this, or is this just an LCD panel lottery that I lost? I'm wondering if I should swap this one out at Staples, return it and wait for the next batch, or if this is a normal characteristic of the JDI panels used in the 2013 Nexus 7?
This is really confusing to me, because in the AnandTech mini review, the 2013 Nexus 7's white point average is 6940K while the original Nexus 7's is 6215K. So my new tablet should have a cooler/more blue color than my old one, but instead it's the opposite and looks warmer/yellow.
mine is like yours so I just think its that way but I prefer it actually
I'm seeing a lot of green wash into whites/browns with mine, and poor black levels (too bright.)
The effect is more pronounced if there's a lot of green in a photo to start with.
I've posted photos comparing what I'm seeing on this device with what I see on a Note 8 in some of the other forum threads on this device.

That gives me hope that not all the displays used in the 2013s look like this. I ordered this one online from Staples, so I haven't seen another 2013 in person yet. I guess I'll head to Staples and Best Buy and look at the demo units and compare them to mine.
Edit:
Reading the other threads make me nervous about exchanging it now. This one has no dust under the screen, no dead pixels, no random reboots, the wireless charging works fine, etc. Aside from the yellowish screen, it's perfect.
I've seen what you guys are talking about with different Nexus 10s side by side. Had one where white looks like snow and two others beside it piss yellow looking white. I wonder if that's due to sourcing the display from different companies. My 2013 N7 arrives tomorrow so I hope it's not funky.
Just bought mine from my local Best Buy tonight. My screen looks perfectly fine. Also, no random reboots(was on it 4 hours straight), and no dust under the screen. I'll check it out again in the morning, but keeping my fingers crossed that mine is good! I didn't even know there were any issues with them until reading this thread

Displays ARE different.
Get over it, guys.
With the Sony Xperia Tablet Z, many people also always complain about the display being too yellowish.
Some displays are too bluish, some have a reddish tint (like my prev-gen N7), some greenish (my SGS2), some yellowish (my Tablet Z).
That's how it is. Some people will shout: "But my Samsung has perfect white", bla... But this isn't true, either. Most probably their display will have blue tint, but they are accustomed to it.
If you want perfect colors, you have to buy Apple, and even then you can't be sure.
And now enjoy your Nexus 7,damnit!
I actually have a good screen, no reboots, (haven't tested wireless charging, probably should) but I'm not actually experiencing the yellowish tint. Try to download Dead Pixel Test by Ossibus Software from Google Play (only a 64kb app), launch it, then tap once to get to "pure" white. Post a picture (not a screenshot) of the tablet at that point.
EDIT: I've noticed that the xda app does have a yellow tint, but doing the dead pixel test reveals a pure white. This could just be xda.

yes, its a lottery. i compared 4 units now, all had different (from bad to worse) whites and contrast setting that effect the scroll blur, overall sharpness and black levels. there's definitely green push somewhere that comes of as yellow tinted screen overall depending on other settings of that particular screen or page you're viewing etc. keep on exchanging or wait for kernels with color control if they ever come that is.

Well, I've got an HTC Desire, and after every reboot, the display gets horribly yellow. Though, turning screen off and on resolves it. Thing is, displays differ from device to device. A friend has a SGS3 with overly cold display, the kind that made my eyse stare at it all the time
Then I look back at my Desire, and it looks yellow. But it goes off after a little time(the yellowish look).
What you should try is to lookat your N7 for longer periods of time, and you'll get accustomed to it
Perfect whites here.
Just wait. Custom kernels will allow you to adjust all of this. With my nexus 4 the colors were not ideal for me, flashed a kernel and choose from the many options of color settings. There will be something for everyone, no matter what colors you prefer.

Definitely different white than my original Nexus 7. First thing I did was open Kindle in both, because I wanted to compare font sharpness, and I was struck by 2013 Nexus 7 looking yellowish compared to original, and thought I much preferred the softer look of the white on the original. Now, however, after using the new 2013 model for 2 days, when I compare the two, the new one seems white and the old one seems pinkish! So I think perception changes with use and familiarity.
I had far more noticeable white balance issues with Galaxy S3, and there was also a noticeable difference in white balance between Galaxy Note GT-N7000 and the AT&T LTE version.

I can't get used to it -- I have really low tolerance for this stuff. Especially since my Nexus 4 screen has good whites, and I'm sometimes switching back and forth between the devices. Or the 3 monitors on my desk that have excellent whites. It's too jarring.

Thinking back, my very first Nexus 4 had very pure whites. My current Nexus 4 is more yellow than that the first one. So for the Nexus 7 to appear yellow to my Nexus 4, it's got to be really bad.
Just to give an update...
I decided to order one from Amazon yesterday instead of exchanging the Staples one. I figured that buying from a different retailer would increase my chances of getting a different batch.
The old one from Staples was made in June 2013, while the new one from Amazon was made in July 2013.

Amazon can issue the replacement if you push the issue. I did. You can always argue that it's not a feature to display the apps or websites in a way that those creators not intended. Also, it's kinda hard to say it's a feature that only some people get it and some people don't, especially when you can pick and choose to have that feature or not.

This is a very good reply.
In the event, I didn't have to get pushy: it was enough to speak firmly, express my disappointment and describe the exact problem succinctly. I did have to confirm that the unit had not been dropped and wasn't broken in any other respect.
Blue glow
Amazon says blue light is normal. We may like or dislike it, but as they say, that's not a defect.
You may notice a very narrow, faint blue tint around the edge of the device when looking at items with a white background, such as books or web pages. All displays have some level of light emission around the edges, and the light on the Kindle Fire HDX 7" is blue due to the technology used to render perfect color accuracy. Most LCD displays use white LEDs, and then apply filters to extract the desired color. The result is oftentimes a compromise to tone and color accuracy, or—if attempting to address these compromises—an increase in battery consumption and, thus, device weight.

Please, refer to "We want you to know" topic on HDX page for details.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BWYQ9YE/ref=r_kdia_h_i_gl
Is the hue evenly distributed around the edges?
I have no problem with the story that it's normal, except that how come it's normal to have the blue hue on the edge of the screen for some HDX and other don't? I'm OK with the "NORMAL" one w/o the blue hue like some other customer get also. In fact, Amazon is welcome to put that up as an option like whether people want 16/32/64GB, wifi/LTE or with/without special offer. Just one more option that ask whether you want the blue hue or not is fine by me. So I can pick the one w/o.
No replacements? Can you still return for a refund?
I just received the replacement, and it's still the same problem. I'll wait until Monday and decide whether to return or not. I most likely will return it.
Do not know if there are devices without blue glow. My HDX is with it but I did not find it irritating. BTW my previous KF had white glow. Of course on white background white glow is not as noticeable.
If we believe Amazon, we should rather regard HDX without glow as a defective one and ask for replacement.
I went to my local BestBuy and the demo had the hue. Went to Staples and the demo there was not as bad, but there. I am planning on getting the 8.9 and hope it does not have this hue!

Heh..you're right. My replacement came in yesterday and, if anything, the blue fringe on white backgrounds is more noticeable. Still, I don't actually spend much time staring at the google home page or similar white screens, so in the end it doesn't bother me much. I use my Kindle for XBMC, Facebook, email, internet and the occasional Virtua Tennis session. And I love it as much as my 2nd Gen Nexus 7.

it‘s a design issue.
LCM Backlight design issue.
but the lab126 guys seems not find a batter way to sovle it
Amazon explains the technology used on the HDX and why there is a bluish line on the HDX order page (under the In Stock line):
We want you to know...
The Kindle Fire HDX 7" has perfect color accuracy (100% sRGB), and we wanted to share more details around our display design decisions that helped us achieve this.
The result is oftentimes a compromise to tone and color accuracy, or-if attempting to address these compromises-an increase in battery consumption and, thus, device weight.
We've taken a different approach. To achieve the perfect color accuracy on Kindle Fire HDX 7" at the lowest possible battery consumption and device weight, we used blue, not white, LEDs. Blue LEDs allow for a much more accurate and rich representation of color and result in an up to 20% improvement in power efficiency.
The replacement I got is pretty bad, it bleed as much as 1/2 inch on one side and 1/4 inch on the opposite side. That's like 10% of the screen is not function properly or unable to display color properly. Forget the Amazon claim,
Perfect Color
Both the 7" and 8.9" Kindle Fire HDX displays feature perfect color (100% sRGB), displaying images and videos as the photographer or videographer intended.

I'm an amateur photographer and I absolutely hate it. On a normal screen, although not 100% accurate, it's at least even out the entire screen, even if there is a light bleed it's very minimal that's unnoticeable. Imagine shooting a picture in the forest and the grasses near the front change from green to cyan. Or shooting a high key picture and it turn blue near the edge. That totally ruin the atmosphere. Try google for the 'high key photography' images and look that on the HDX screen. My other usage involve reading comic book which this HDX totally botched as well.
I really want to get the 7" HDX, but I'm going to hold off until this "Blue slice of death" issue is resolved. I have a 1st Gen HD and a 1st Gen Fire (Hacked). Between the BSOD, the battery issues, the angled inputs, I think this HDX was rushed to market and is not up to Amazon quality.
The reason for the blue hue was explained a few posts above. It's not a defect or rushed manufacturing. For better picture/battery it's a compromise I'm willing to make. This screen is gorgeous and the blue is barely noticeable.

White is nicer looking imo, also better for browsing, drawing, note taking. Some prefer to watch movies on a black model, but not seen much use there myself really. Also the fake leather looks better in white. Several reviewers mentioned the white one looking better, none so far preferred the black one. White backgrounds on the screen of the Note 10.1 costs no more energy to produce than a black one.
With amoled on a phone I prefer a black device, seeing a black themed screen saves energy and phones are somewhat low on battery power.
I picked up the previous 10.1 in white and did not like it so when I purchased my 2014 10.1 I made sure it was the black one.

I am considering the white model because it looks better than the black one, and I had the same initial concerns about the back getting dirty... However, after seeing them both in person, I'm pretty sure either version will be very easy to clean if it does get dirty. After all, it's only plastic and the texture is not very deep.
Am I the only person who finds the white border with chrome being distracting?

I prefer black for my gadgets. White just reminds me of outdated kitchen appliances. Never understood the fascination people have with white electronics. Also, I've seen too many white colored devices get discolored over time... not sure this textured back is going to hold up to grime over time very well.

I like white, and got a white note I've never had my white smartphones or tablets get discolored, maybe those people just didn't take good care of their devices, like leaving them in the sun in a hot car. It's personal preference though, go with what you like.
