I recently bought a Nexus 4 and have a few questions about whether or not I should root.
Firstly, I'm not new to this. I have in the past rooted 4 android devices including a Gal-nexus. Nevertheless I have concerns.
1. Does performance suffer with custom Roms/kernels? I have found my N4 very responsive but in the past I felt like some speed and fluidity was lost when I flashed new Roms. Is that still the case?
2. A follow on from 1; What's the best Rom?
3. Are there any benefits to rooting specific to the N4 that I otherwise wouldn't know about?
4. Are there any other reason why I should/ should not root that you know?

I don't see how anyone could possibly answer your questions. Performance varies from ROM to ROM, but generally building a ROM that makes performance suffer doesn't regularly become popular. The best ROM is an often asked question, and it gets the same answer every time. You need to try them out and see for yourself. People may offer their opinions, but that's it. You may like something in one ROM which I don't etc. There are benefits to rooting, as a few popular apps require root permissions (Titanium backup i.e). I always root my phones, and I've never regretted doing it.
1. Does performance suffer with custom Roms/kernels? I have found my N4 very responsive but in the past I felt like some speed and fluidity was lost when I flashed new Roms. Is that still the case?
Flash a custom rom if you'd like. Honestly, there's nothing wrong with vanilla android 4.2.2, but it's missing a few things I like having...like expanded power menu and the theme engine
2. A follow on from 1; What's the best Rom?
for me it's paranoid. It looks VERY professional, IMHO, and it offers everything I want in a rom, including an aosp base, rather than CM, which has become a little too trendy for me
3. Are there any benefits to rooting specific to the N4 that I otherwise wouldn't know about?
accessing any functions that would need modding to run from anywhere but the /data directory just like always
4. Are there any other reason why I should/ should not root that you know?
the first thing I did when I unboxed mine (after playing with the stock rom for 20 minutes) was run the bootloader unlock command, then flash cwm so I could run a custom rom I'm probably the wrong person to ask if you're apprehensive about using a custom rom, because I'm always for rooting and customizing
If you want to root it do it at your own risk..btw I haven't rooted mine yet

Thank you for sharing this vital and lifechanging information
@OP:
I would use the phone for a few weeks to get familiar with it, read up in the meantime about the rom`s, kernel`s, mods that are available and fastboot and adb . After that you can realy compare and see the benefits and/or downsides between stock and custom.
As long as you have done the research and understand the risks of rooting your device(and you have stated you do) I would. The whole reason I bought this device is because I knew development would be off the chain.....and it is. Good luck whichever you decide and flash safely.

Honestly I've been rooted I've tried like 5 roms (top roms like cm, Xenon, xylon, liquid smooth, etc) but I feel like stock is smoother and faster... I root for performance and customization but there's no improvement in performance for me (unless overclocked) so I guess I'm going back to stock rooted

Roms don`t make phones faster, kernels make them faster
i recommend you to root your N4 you will not have any drop downs in performance

Hi,
It depends of a certain point of view... What do youy mean by "faster" (I don't ask this to you particularly ), yes a kernel helps but a rom well optimized can do your phone "faster" without any custom kernel.
After all it depends of what do you mean, faster, smoother, etc... is subjective. A combo kernel / rom optimized is the best and I think that just a kernel can't do only the stuff all the time (flash a bloated rom with a ton of scripts and build.prop tweaks as a "fastest and smoother rom", flash a "good" kernel -> the kernel will not help you even with overclocking or anything else).
You can have a good kernel with some good settings but you can broke all this stuff with a "bad" rom... So it's 50 / 50 - rom / kernel.
It's not only the kernel that makes a phone "faster"...
It's like in a car, it's not only the motor that does everything (I mean that does a faster car), there is also the Cx, the tyres, the fuel, etc...
If you do not have a reason to root, don't do it then.

Good remark.
I rooted mine and flashed Faux mainline kernel with stock 4.2.2 and i noticed a huge improvement in battery life and performance. :good:
My reasons for rooting before I even put my SIM card in:
1. It wipes the phone so best to do it first.
2. Titanium Backup to restore transfer apps/data from my Nexus One.
3. Install Greenify
4. Install AdAway
5. Load Franco kernel which doesn't require root but his kernel app does
I knew going in that I wasn't going to load a custom ROM for a long time (if at all). I don't see how it could get much smoother than stock
There is no "Best" ROM. It's all on personal preference. I personally think PA is the best rom, and have stuck by it ever since getting my N4. You might think another rom is best, so just try all the ones that seem interesting to you, and find out what's best for you.
If you just got your nexus 4 enjoy it stock for a while. It works pretty good! Take your time to read. Welcome aboard!

I'm on stock right now and it's blazing I mean I might root again and try a kernel with mpdecision enabled and that could make a big difference but we'll see I mean I like stock for now there's not much bloat except for like currents, earth, book, and stuff which is just Google play stuff I'm glad I don't have all that tmobile bloat lol

Yeah Im kind a questioning the point in rooting to. I had rooted and installed RasBean rom with Trinity on my Galaxy Nexus and it was great, but one of the main reasons i rooted was to get stickmount to work for usb memory stick support. As this isnt there yet for the N4 then im failing to see the point... plus once i start flashing roms and taking backups with clockworkmod that eats into available phone space..
im sure i'll be tempted eventually but right now im getting decent battery life, good performance and my screen colours are good enough for me.. so i am on the fence..
will rooting and flashing these custom kernels/roms resolve the wifi instability issue?? thanks!
In my opinion, if You are asking this (and these) question (s) then You definitely should not root your device. It's natural for me to root it 5 minutes after unboxing my new device, but I know why am I doing this. If you asking other people whether You should do it or not then You dont need it
I just got my new Nexus 4 and it came with 4.2 in the box. I've researched a bit about 4.3 and the upgrades don't seem too major..I've heard a lot of problems with it, including worse battery(4.3 is supposed to improve battery life). I haven't had enough time with the phone to test the battery yet, but my question is, is it worth upgrading to 4.3?
Thanks for any input.
4.3 has scratchy sound in some games where 4.2.x didn't.
Apart from that I can't tell the difference for my usage.
Personally, its all worth.
Firstly, its a Project Butter revisit.
The battery life is either same or better, I can easily get 7 hour SOT on both.
I might not be an audiophile, but the sound seemed the same to me.
Conclusion for me, I'm never turning back to 4.2.2(unless there is a major test), because 4.3 is far far better.
You should do more reading on more benefits, its in the general thread.
i am using 4.3... but i guess its worse.. if lowers my antutu score.. the custom kernels for 4.2 have way more features... keylime pie is expected to be out in october.. you may wanna wait.. and regarding battery i hardly see any difference.. in 4.2 and 4.3
UPDATE: would you recommend Android 4.4.1 over Android 4.3 on the Nexus 4? Why? Why not?
Okay, a little title change here. So I'm hearing some good things on 4.4.1, so let me ask you a few questions, even if it may be too early at this point:
- anyone who didn't recommend 4.4 before feels like 4.4.1 is major step forward?
- how's battery life, especially in regards of wakelocks and unexpected drainage? Does wakelockdetector work now?
- how's 4.4.1 performance compared to 4.3, both stock, is it definitely snappier?
- how's camera performing to 4.3, how's photoshere stitching?
- anyone running it WITHOUT factory reset and 4.4 & 4.4.1 installed over 4.3, experiencing zero problems?
Thank you!

Okay I guess it's a question I want answer to, but I posted in the General cause more than a simple answer I look forward to a positive discussion on the matter - is 4.4 stable, app-supported and bug free enough right now to easily recommend the update, would you rather suggest to wait until bug fixes or would you flat out say avoid it?
I added a poll to get a statistical look of the Community's take on this so others can check where 4.4 stands now on the Nexus 4 according to XDA.
Of course, KitKat is a great update. It's the best Android version yet and I love where Google is going with it.

obviously yes, the 4.4 google nexus update is awesome, dunno for other devices ( in future ). by the time samsung launches it, it will be full of bugs, ala 4.3 for s3
I think everyone who has an unlocked bootloader should for sure. Definitely needs to be ran for a couple days to get a feel for it. If you want customization you'll most likely go back to 4.3 as 4.4 rom's don't have very much. (yet)
Performance and UI changes (if there..) are nice. On the other hand there are too many bugs to recommend it. Also, and this does not apply to many, battery life of my N4 sucks after some days on KK. No, there is no bad app. Ask my bbs stats

I also have to say my battery life sucks now that I'm on 4.4.
Not sure what it is but I got 12 hours TOTAL. Not even with a lot of use. Most of the time the screen was off and I didn't much use it. That's compared to a full day of life when I was on JB.
I'm wondering if a factory reset would help it.
I'm running KRT16O on my phone and loving it. However, it appears I was one of the lucky ones. No bugs, no bootloop.
KRT16S is obviously not ready for rollout. It's been soft-bricking devices like crazy it seems. I hope Google halts the OTA and fixes this. Until then, I'm sticking with 16O.
Hold off and wait.
So, there are plenty of bugs here, lags on the lock screen, lags in the applications, applications which still doesn't working, camera is making very bad pictures and so on - take a look to android 4.4 bugs forum.
I am back to 4.3 and waiting for 4.4.1.
No, i don't recommend 4.4 on the nexus 4 yet.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Recommended. I'm on KRT16S with no problems whatsoever. Great fluidity and no bugs.
I think 4.4 has some good news, but not worth it. I was using paranoid ROOM with linaro franco kernel and i`m ready to get it back on my device.
krt16s
KRT16S is very good image,my phone is full apps and all working without problem,i use nova last beta 3 launcher and working realy fast,i dont like GEL icons(too big for me),battery is great, after 10 hours stand by time 4-6 %, ,on screen i think is wery good, betther than 4.3....no FC,no lags, everything work fluid and fast....
i flash with FB,and after flashing factory reset....
It's significantly better than 4.3 IMO. I personally clean flash for every major update after taking a backup, and I'm having absolutely no issues. UI is extremely smooth, no bugs with tethering or anything of that sort and battery life has actually improved.
I'd recommend a clean flash if you have the time, just to be thorough.
I would definitely recommend it. Performancewise...it has never been better imo! I don't experience any of those bugs mentioned above. Smoothness is just amazing.

How's that ART thing on the Nexus 4? Is it too experimental at this point to be of everyday use?

I switched to ART immediately upon updating last week. It runs great. I've only had a few bugs(Timely takes about 10 seconds to open). Beyond that, I like it. I let my friend who is using CM 11 on his GNex try it out last night and he was impressed with the performance.
If you get KitKat to install without soft-bricking, you're going to have a good experience IMO. However, due to the risk of bootloop, I cannot recommending the update at this time in good conscience.
4.4 is the best android version so far, and with ART is amazingly smooth!
Sure - I have been using since a day after Google released the factory images and I didn't have a single problem with it. I also flashed zip for transparent nav bar in the lockscreen and installed Nova launcher beta and everything is as smooth as butter
Well, i'm not using ART so far because I don't like to use a hacked lib or an outdated app to be able to use all my apps with it.
That aside, KRT16S has been awesome so far, battery life has improved, the UI is much smoother and with ApexPro 2.2.0 beta 1 the interface has the same transparency as GEL (Which I uninstalled already. I don't like the kiddie-sized icons, it looks too toy-like).
On KTR16S ... Battery is worse than KTR16O which is worse than 4.3 for me... My experience with ART was not great, but probably because my phone is almost full of files and got full (system and free space for storage) after a long time to optimize...after that I didn't notice a better performance and missed some of my apps so returned back to dalvik ...but I would recommend KitKat....I like GEL and about its size icons I changed DPI than got great for me

I'm sorry I still carry some noobage... install without soft bricking, what do you mean by that? I'm waiting for the OTA but still undecided whether to install when it arrives. Speaking of, if it does, can I install it over 4.3 keeping my apps & settings? I'm unrooted and not planning to.
Hi, just got my note 3 a few days back and I was prompted to update the firmware to 4.4.
Would jsut like to know what I might gain or lose in functionality with regards to flashing/rooting etc. etc.
Also a service name Index Service has been eating mybattery ever since I started syncing dropbox, anyone in the same boat?
Much Appreciated.
Pros:
Some people claim better response, little faster speed, better battery life and gain about 300MB of RAM on clean boot.
Cons:
Change in SD card writing permission, third party programs can't write to SD card unless updated, won't work until then or you fix it manually but need root.
Can't root without tripping Knox
Can't go back to lower firmware
Third party s-view covers no longer work as designed
some other random incompatibilities with some programs, those are to be expected with any firmware update.
That's all I can remember for now.
If you use SD card with non factory installed programs, the new permissions could be a big deal especially if you want to keep your Knox flag =0
Forgot to mention under pro's, better battery life...
Most of the pro's are under the hood upgrades. You will find it is a bit faster and some little problems you experience are fixed.
As I rooted my phone 10 minutes aftr I got home I have no problems with sd card and s-view case as there is a mod for that...
Knox warranty is voided when rooted but then again the phone is fine...
I'm very content with stock version.
Particularly content with the battery life.
Personally ATM I have no problems with my Note 3 running 4.3 at all, I'm rooted with Knox=0 so I can tweak speed, battery life etc. much better than KK can and I learned (at least I should have) long time ago, don't fix it, if it ain't broke, especially that I rely on SD card a lot (would be out of memory already if didn't have card), so yeah I would have to be stupid to upgrade and then trip the Knox to root just to have the phone running as well as it's now. Of course everybody is different and for example if I had my Knox tripped already, I may have been more tempted to upgrade.
Have had zero issues since flashing Kitkat on my Note, Only thing I regret (con to me) is jumping the gun and upgrading to the new boot loader (i was running AOSP for a while) - but now I can live with a non AOSP ROM as the new boot loader is being sorted.
PROS - battery is a lot better, smoother feel of the device in general also.

No real Cons really, I feel that KitKat is alot better than JellyBean and personally, I really prefer the White Status bar icons.
About Index Service, seems it has to do with PDF files on your phone, here are some threads below to help you with fixing it. Good luck!

I know exactly what you mean, I felt the same way when i flash MJ6 firmware that brought the new bootloader wayy back then on JB, but eventually, It would be hard to avoid upgrading the bootloader, plus i saw some people complaining of some weird issues like charging and stuff that upgrading bootloader fixed for some reason. Lol. Anyways.. BottomLine: ENJOY your phone.
Depends on what you need.

I am very unhappy with my update, but I kinda had to as I was unfortunate enough to get one of the Note 3s that randomly reset itself. I haven't had that issue since updating, though I haven't been using it for more than the day so it could still decide to spontaneously reset itself, but all of my third party apps that access the SD card have stopped working.
Not a problem if you're rooted, but I'd like to keep my KNOX =0
As an added annoyance the Tap and Pay still doesn't work, I had hoped that the changes in 4.4 would let me use my Note 3 like I did my S3.
You should take a look at Google's KitKat page: http://www.android.com/versions/kit-kat-4-4/
It's very informative.
Remember that it isn't only fast, but it handles memory operations much more efficiently than on 4.3.
Battery life is also much better for me.
I've been running X-Note 10, and it has the ExtSDCard writing capability enabled again.
Running custom kernel, custom recovery and ROM with KNOX at 0x0. NB4.

After reading through these comments I probably would update too but I want to know one thing:
Can I update to KK without updating my bootloader ? (non rooted 4.3 MJ7)
Im asking this, because I read about updating your bootloader won't let you downgrade.
At this point in time it no longer worth it to remain in 4.3. All issues so far have been fixed or can be fixed. And also understand 4.3 is not "perfect". There are bugs in 4.3 as well that are probably fixed in 4.4.
Not to mention most of the custom rom devs don't make 4.3 roms anymore.
It's not worth it to stay in 4.3

My 2 cents.
I dont think it's worth the hassle. The only cosmetic changes are the status bar icons- now all white and the new music lockscreen- fullscreen instead of pulldown widget.
You Lose sd card support for 3rd party apps who haven't been updated for KK. Also breaking some games: San andreas, among others (FCs) and losing features from apps: Boat Browser (Text wrapping).
You gain: Speed boost (modest at best), more available memory (RAM), Potentially better battery life (IMO 4.3 MJ7 just the same as NA6 4.4.2- other words no change in my case, YMMV)
If your not afraid of tripping knox and rooting than I'd say go for it. I don't mean to stifle your enthusiasm, just keepin it real. I will say this though, when I did update and I was unrooted for all of 10 minutes, the phone absolutely flew. Once rooted and everything back up and running the speed boost is minimal, the best word to describe it would be confident. The phone had less stutter and felt more confident (this is really nitpicking though).

@denski101 Alright, then I'll probably stay at 4.3
I think the performance increase can't be too big, cause it flies even with 4.3 no complaining here.
Basically I dont want to risk tripping knox counter, who knows what will happen in a year with my device.
But I really do want root, but not at the price of voiding my warranty.
TL;DR
I'll stay at 4.3 for the moment and wait until there's a method to root on 4.4.2 without tripping knox.

Actually. I have no complaints for 4.4. You can re-enable SD card writing for third party apps, NO FC's if you don't do something the system doesn't want you to do (TB/dirty flash) [clear cache]. The speed is much better, it's like comparing Windows 7 and Windows 8, but Windows 8 is more optimized to be much faster than Windows 7. Even though they're both great OS'es, the memory management has been drastically improved.
I have many complaints about 4.3, including delay wake/sleep, sporadic hangs and memory leaking.
On 4.4, they fixed the problematic touchscreen bug (if existent, to up to 10 fingers), battery life is much better (40 hours standby time - no display, wifi on, autosync on), faster responses in app launching, faster boot up time, more RAM for heavier background apps and all apps available on the Play Store for me works on 4.4 (Around 400 apps downloaded).
Con: You need root to re-enable SD card writing for now, until Samsung fixes it with a later update: however, most apps by now have been updated for 4.4, so this shouldn't be needed anymore. Custom ROMs allow apps that don't support 4.4 to read/write to SD card, like osu!.
Well, my expirience with KK on note 3 is amazing... way better than JB. It corrected a lot os bugs, FC, HEAT, BATTERY DRAIN... of course still have some touchwiz's bugs, like index bug... but KK way way better than JB.
Absolutely no regrets...

So, Samsung finally released Lollipop for just about every Note 4 variant now but, after reading a lot of people suffering from huge battery drain, overheating and random crashes, I'm just wondering if I should bother updating to lollypop myself.
I'm still on stock 4.4.4 (with a fair amount of mods) and my phone runs exactly how I want it to. The only ever problem I have is sometimes contacts crashes, but it's not even done that for about a week.
What are the advantages (if any) of upgrading to lollipop?
Let's see if you can convince me to part with my very stable and perfectly functional modded 4.4.4.

BOC5 works perfectly fine here and is a lot smoother than any KitKat version that I used prior. If you play a lot of games then chances are you might run into the GPU bug, but other than that I see no problems in going with the newest Android version available. :good:
I got N910C. No root.
These are some facts about KK & LP according to my own experience.
KitKat 4.4.4:
Had volume spike answering bug (mentioned somewhere on XDA),
Had read only SD card problem (due to Android restrictions),
Lollipop 5.0.1:
Solved both above mentioned issues of KK,
Faster and smoother than KK,
No crashes, freezes, hickups, overheating - rock stable,
Better RAM management,
Better or equal battery consumption,
Material design (I love it, somebody else may not)
1-2 second answering ''hello hello'' bug (caller can't hear me 1-2 sec. after my answer). I don't know is anybody else has this bug,
GPU throttling bug (when phone reaches about 50 C some games stutter and benchmarks like Antutu show low results due to lower GPU frequencies)
Everything is perfect except this. This should be fixed ASAP in next update.
Be aware of this and consider eventually upgrade to Lollipop
Just in case: lots of shortcut apps (e.g. pulling down the notification bar!) don't work on Samsung's iteration of Lollipop anymore. That's still one of the biggest issues at least for me!
I have updated my UK ee phone to the German BOC3 and I have to say I'm very impressed with it. I have done a dirty flash and I haven't encountered a single issue. My battery life seems better, the system settings feel cleaner and the general visual tweaks and nice. Looking forwards to the btu
