[Q] Confusion with Flashing CWM from Odin... - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All the CWM files from the official website are *.img but odin3 is asking for a tar file.
there has to be some reason why all the files are IMG that its the right file (its the only thing available form their site...). Where can I find a tar file from CWM?
Additionally, do you have to root to flash CWM from stock?

help with Odin.... .tar file

hey guys where I get a .TAR file ? or convert a .zip to .tar.
I have my pit file just dont seem to know what to do with the .tar file.
Im used to restore.flashing my phone via .zip thats all.
Can I just take my .zip rom I want and convert to .tar
what is it that you wanted to do in the first place? samfirmware has copies of the regional firmwares (.tar files) if you want them.
.tar is another form of archive. You need to read this fully:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596
I also recommend you search Youtube for some videos of the process too. Odin flashing is not the same as a .zip update from SD Card, and honestly if you are unfamiliar with what a tar-ball is you may not be up for what using Odin entails. You have a very real risk of bricking your phone through a mistake.
Read, read again, be sure, flash!

Help: rooting problem gingerbread JV6!!!!

i just flashed zimage.tar via odin s i can root my gingerbread rom JV6 but it seems nothing is happening. see below image. its been an hour already! pls help i cant use my fone. i need to root it so i can restore my apps using TB. my fone is still in dwnload mode the yellow android image
You don't have to flash the zimage file. Instead flash the .tar file which you get after you extract the downloaded .zip file. When extracting, don't select extract here instead select extract to folder -- the latter would get you .tar file while the former gets you not-for-flashing zimage file.

Root N915F Lollipop Easily

I successfully rooted my N915F running on latest lollipop using this method, just download the cf root 915f files , flash with odin that is provided inside the zip file and ofcourse it will fail, then flashed the latest TWRP 2.8.7.0 , in my case i have to make the tar file using cygwin because the tar file is not available on TWRP website instead you will get a img file. After the TWRP is up, i flashed the supersu 2.46 and its done
Note: i m new and not allowed to post the outside links, you can google the files and find it very easily. To make the tar file you can search img to tar using cygwin method.
To get a better Idea with proper description you can follow TEKHD thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-edge/general/easy-steps-stock-odin-n915tuvu1anjl-sm-t2943993

Flashing Stock Recovery - SOLVED

Hi all,
Just after some help here...
I'm trying to flash the stock recovery to remove the features from TWRP, the ability to delete and access files... Essentially to dumb the phone down after I've got it where it needs to be.
I've extracted the recovery.img.l4z file from the stock AP and then extracted the recovery.img then added it to a .tar archive...
So now I have the recovery.tar file however it won't flash via Odin. Odin pauses at "Get PIT for mapping".
Any suggestions to remove TWRP and return the recovery to stock would be awesome! Thank you
OK - fixed, I added .img after recovery so effectively.... the final final to be flashed was recovery.img.tar
This worked. Samsung stock recovery flashed succesfully and twrp was removed.
Will leave this here for future reference.
Please note this recovery file came from AP_G950FXXUCDUD1_CL21427293_QB39365966 firmware file.
