[Q] Should I update? - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, just wondering, I am not rooted, I will eventually, but i hear that the update helps a lot in sound and connectivity and that they can reroot the phone, so if I update right now, i will be able to get root in the future? Also, do you guys think that when the Dev edition of the note 3 hit the market, maybe we will be able to install AOSP roms? thanks guys :good:

I do not think you would have to root if not ready. Yes it gives you a bit of an edge like using TB to remove or freeze bloat apps... Rooting it just by doing it changes nothing but adding SU...
I did it to kill some bloat...

[Q] new OTA update and rooting ?

i wanted to do a battery saver mod, or a couple of mods maybe. i am not rooted yet, and i just took an OTA update (probably a bad idea right?) oh well, is there any way i can root it with this update?
this is the method i was going to use, any idea if it will work? i couldnt find anything really about kernel versions or anything just model compatibility, and mine is an i9505 verizon. so it should work, but the OTA is fairly recent and im wondering if it just hasnt been updated or what?

after doing a bit more research i MAY not root, just because of the fact that i heard it disables screen mirroring, i use this feature on the daily.
still if anyone can give me a definitive answer that would be great

[Q] Noob needing help updating and backing up

Hi all...sorry if this is very noob but hope someone can help me out...
i got my galaxy s4 for att and its been great so far...i did root it and got rid of all the junk stuff on the phone which was nice to do... but a little issue now..there is an OTA update and its trying to apply it by rebooting but it goes to my console screen i guess and i know even if it applies it it would get rid of root.... is there a way to apply this without having to reinstall all my emails (5 emails) and my apps and keep the root ability on it? I would love to get the feature to send apps to my SD thats the only reason i really want it.
again im sorry if this is very noobish to some of u but would like a nice guide if possible how to do it.
Thanks in advance
What device? Thats important, and DO NOT let it do the update. if you are rooted, you could freeze the samsung updater.
I would get off stock and flash a custom rom.

hehe I know you stated galaxy s4, but I needed to make sure, US version right?
Use my rom, mine is totally stock, with a few modifications, and FAST!
or you can go any TW rom.
here is mine..
[ROM] ViSiON-X v1.0|AROMA|4.2.2|MGA|TW|[08-03]
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2391142
then you will not have to worry about an update, until someone finds a patch for the update...

I use Infamous S4 as well, I love it. It's pretty stock feeling.
When it comes to the backing up part, I suggest Titanium Backup. Get the pro version and you can batch install all of your apps from a backup, otherwise you have to do it one by one. It also saves all app data and system data and accounts, so you can do a full wipe when installing an update or a new ROM (always a good idea,) then just let it completely restore the phone from a backup. You can use it to back-up everything, except for the home-screen layout (android limitation apparently.) Plus you can backup right to the phone if you have space so you don't have to wory about using the computer. I recomment getting a microSD card for 10 bucks at Staples and backing up to that. When you're restoring, make sure that you check what you're restoring. Most of the stuff in red are system apps that don't need to be restored (as newer or the same versions may already be installed from the update.)
For restoring root priviledges, CWM and TWRP custom rrecoveries have a tool for this.

Prevent i337 Software update?

Again, sorry if this is in the wrong place but i dont know who else to ask but you guys.
I originally got my galaxy s4 (AT&T) when it first came out and couldnt wait to root and flash. A couple months later i had to do a warranty exchange just to figure out that it came preinstalled with MF3 (damn mf3) i ended up rooting and like most of you guy who arent/wouldnt be able to flash probably are bored. I then had to do another warranty exchange and when i powered the phone on i went to the more tab in settings and the "about device" was blue not yellow. I knew the phone was on an older firmware and i did confirm it to be on MDL (Sigh of relief) right away i started to root and downloading roms. i havent flashed any yet. My question is, on my stock rom (i am rooted) i keep getting a message. the the red and blue arrows for a new software (its that damn mf3) I DONT WANT IT!!! lol is there any way to stop it from asking me. i keep postponing it but i rerad somewhere u can only do that so much, im all nervous that im gonna wake up one morning and see MF3 took over my phone again lol.
sorry for the essay, if anyone has any info on how to stop it from asking that would be very much appreciated!!!
Thanks,
Dave
This should got in the QA forum. You can download a custom rom to get rid of the message or a freeze a few apps. If I were you, I'd get a custom rom, otherwise why would you care about not having MF3.

Good luck
And for future, please post in Q & A section.
Or do this.

And i would freeze those apps right away like the 2 links that were post it on top if not MF3 will automatically update you phone so you need to hurry and do this Good Luck!

So if i do flash a custom rom i dont need to worry about it asking or updating on its own. i just flashed vision x ROM TW with Ktoones Kernel and i am loving the rom so far. But if i just keep a custom rom i dont have to worry about the update doing it by itself or freezing it?
Thanks to all the answers,
David

That is correct, good sir. If you froze the update apps/apks you will not be prompt for an update.
However, if you do end up odin'ing your phone for some reason, be sure to quickly block the update by rooting your phone and freeze once again. Odin removes root
Enjoy your custom rom as you are one of the lucky ones still on the old MDL update :good:

I understand what you mean but really who's gonna wait for a developer to release a rom of the latest android version when they can run stock/rooted stock of the newest version as soon as its released? sure custom roms have more features fix bugs etc. but if your that impatient you don't wanna wait around I know I didn't it took Cyanogen almost 3 months to release 4.3

I wait because if I wanted stock I would already be on it and enjoy that life. I have been around for a while and see a lot of people destroy their phones trying to resort back to stock and then get stuck there because of root issues or bootloader issues. Not saying thats an issue here but you guys act like a rooted version after a few days is going to kill you. Look its just my opinion from what I have seen around here. Root/unroot/root again... ehhh

Case in Point here

Necessary to protect rooted (otherwise stock) 4.4.2?

Hi folks,
I got a used I337 S4 and have been using it on ATT no problems. I rooted it (towelroot), initially just to make it easier to back up some application data but eventually I plan to debloat the thing. Probably will stay on stock ROM unless I have a compelling reason to switch.
My question is, now that I have a rooted device, do I have anything to fear from possible OTA updates to 4.4.3 or 4.4.4, updating the OS and making me loose root. And if I do need to be concerned, what is the best way to block such updates from happening, until such time as a new root is (hopefully) developed.
Sorry if this is a basic question... I'm still learning my way around these things.
Thanks
Marc
