launchers - 7" Kindle Fire HD General

Thanks to all the help I've received, I was finally able to root my KFHD, installed bootloader and TWRP and went as far as flashed Chameleon. After having trying this out for a couple of days, I'm thinking of experimenting with other things. If I want to install say, AWD or Go launchers, I wou ld need to wipe through TWRP correct? I can't simply put the apk files in the sdcard and install, correct?

If you flashed chameleon, shouldn't you have flashed gapps as well so you could simply install those launchers from Google play so you don't need to side load them?

Hi Stunts, yes I do have Gapps. I guess I'm just confused as to whether Chameleon is the "OS" or is it considered a launcher. I didn't want to overwrite Chameleon by accident and brick my KFHD.

I haven't used chameleon before, but its the os, and if it is also a launcher it wouldn't break anything, you are given the choice what launcher you want to use. One doesn't overwrite the other.

Go launcher is neat but your info is getting sent to servers in China. No way I will use it.

It is? *scratches head*
I use the HD version, never knew that. Is it just simple ad related data? I typically have ad block running in the background so I never see ads.

I got to wondering and did some checking into it. There is a great thread on XDA about it. Even with droid wall and the sand box it make me uneasy.

You've tried getting it on your phone, then sideloading the apk from there? That's how I get apps that aren't compatible. This is how I do it: get titanium backup pro (worth the money and you'll use it for more than just this use) and dropbox (free), download the app to your phone, navigate to the app in tibu and long press the app. Select send this backup, send to dropbox. Get dropbox on kindle also, open on kindle and extract the saved apk.

If not compatability do the MAWR OPEN thread GT-1900. CM7 and d/ld and played last night from the Android Market.

This is how you do it. Flash the latest cm9 Go into root explorer or anothher root file explorer. Navigate to /system/. Mount rw. Long press build.prop, and replace amazon kindle fire with motorola xoom. Then run the app.

Nope this does not work. But I am on MIUI. Don't know if that makes a difference.
It installs and works fine for me on CM7 with a mortified build.prop file.

Disguise my fire as an Android phone to use an app?

I am using the cm7 rom on my kindle fire. The one that whistlestop posted. I am trying to use an app from the Android market. I can download it to my fire but when I open it I get the message that it is not supported on this device. I know I read that it is not supported on tablets, but I was curious if I can "disguise" my tablet to look like an Android phone that is supported by the app. Thanks.

Which app are you trying to install? Have you tried getting the APK for it and manually installing it?
It is AppRedeem. On the info page the app says it does not currently support Android tablets but I wasnt sure if I could make my fire appear to be an Android phone so it will work. I have downloaded it from the market and I have also manually installed via adb with the apk but when I open the app it tells me it is not supported on my device.

Well I did some editing on my prop and manage to get my device to appear as a Samsung phone in the market but still no luck with getting the app to see my fire as a phone.

When I go to the Market it says it is compatible with the Kindle Fire both in stock and ICS. Just thought you might find that interesting.
app
Have you tried cm7 or miui? Both are phone roms tweaked a bit for phones and could possibly solve the problem. I think that the problem isn't making your kindle look like a phone because that would only allow you to download the app which you already did. Good luck
There is thread about getting apps to work on the ICS roms. I was gonna do some editing to see if I can get whatsapp to run on cm7. Same thing, tablets not supported.
Sent from my Kindle Fire using Tapatalk
Disregard that editing nonsense. Another thread specifically about whatsapp said to backup the app on a running phone with titanium backup and then send the three backed up files to the fire and restore app+ data. Worked perfectly.

Thanks guyute74. I dont have an android phone so I cant do it myself. If anyone with an android phone and titanium wanted to back it up and send me the files I would really appreciate it. Shoot me a pm and I can give you my email.

Getting a new Kindle fire

I've finally decided to return my broken kindle fire for a new one, under warranty. It should be here tomorrow.
I haven't used a kindle fire in a couple months, and when I was using it, it was rooted with some rom that I completely forgot.
What I want to know is, what rom should I use, that is the most stable?
I've been hearing good things about Jellybean, but I just want to be 100% sure.
Any suggestions?
Also, a Kindle Fire case suggestion would be nice, but is not needed. Really just want a rom suggestion.

Yea, I heard that case is very stable.
Yea, I'd say go with Jandycane or Hashcode's AOSP ROM. I think Hashcode's is a bit more stable (from my experience), however Jandycane does have more features, and a Tablet UI.
the Eye Candy Rom is pretty amazing.

Update is fast. User friendly UI
Jandycane. Updates frequently, has a tablet UI like ics, works perfectly, and is fully jelly bean.

I would say to give twa_priv's rom a try also. It's a cm10 rom and you can toggle tablet ui in settings.

I am also going to recommend twa_priv's CM10 ROM.
Jandycane is so smooth. I recommend it.
And, Apex Launcher is a good home application for jelly bean.
Off course, why not install xda-application
