Hey guys. I am not a dev, but I would like to know if Google Experience Launcher is closed sourced. Are Launcher developers able to use GE new features like Google now on theft screen in their launchers?
I heard Google makes its new Launcher Nexus 5 exclusive for now so I would like to know that . Of course I know there is already apk leaked, but you know.
Thanks in advance for explanation.

My understanding is that the Google Experience Launcher (GEL) is closed source. If you download and compile Android Open Source (AOSP) for Nexus 5 right now, I don't think the GEL is there.
Rumor has it, GEL will be distributed for free via the Play store in the future, much like they have done with the other free ($) but closed-sourced apps (aka "gapps").
As to third-party developers creating launchers... I think they will basically have to mimic the functionality, as opposed to having access to the source. (Ignoring the possibility of decompiling or disassembling the APKs that make up the GEL, which is definitely not allowed).
I think golderatio is right. To be honest though, it should be noted AOSP open-source launcher is very close to Google closed-source GEL, they should, AFAIK, differ only in the presence of Google Now (which is present in GEL but not in AOSP launcher)

Absolutely wrong. The AOSP 4.4 launcher is 99% same as the JB AOSP launcher. Nothing is like the GEL at all.

While different sites report different things, in the changelog you can find at funkyandroid[dot]com/aosp-JSS15J-KRT16M.html you can clearly see launcher3 *is* a part of AOSP. On one comment to the AndroidPolice article where the changelog was posted, a user reported "I just compiled from source the launcher of KitKat switching to the kikat-release branch.
Works for sure on Android 4.3. I'm not sure with JB or ICS. It's exactly the same as the one on the Nexus 5 except that Google Now is not integrated"

Again, Launcher3 is nothing like GEL. I have AOSP 4.4 source and its not even a wee bit like the GEL. Try going through any of the AOSP builds of 4.4 on XDA and find ask another dev if GEL was compiled from source or not. GEL will be exclusive to the Nexus until they release it through the Play Store but it is not open source. GEL is a gapp, and like all other gapps, it is CLOSED SOURCE.
I must admit I haven't personally checked AOSP code, I guess you must be right then
But I have a genuine question: there are launchers in the play store that emulate GEL and they claim they built them starting from AOSP code, did they write it wrong or meant something else?

Hi guys, I just ran into this post demonstrating Project Chameleon and wanted to share this with you. I personally think it looks great and can't wait for it to be released, or even better, to be ported to the Xoom!

Its really fantastic
That's pretty damn slick.
Looks awesome - but will need a lot of work to be really useful. Similar to Cornerstone (which is epic as well but is too buggy at the moment).
Looks to heavy and cluttered for me.

Looks impressive but has anyone heard anything on a timeline as far as when the general public would have access to it?
Looks good to me, however very "Metro" like, they need to get this out before Win8 lands..

That looks fantastic. Is it safe to say that it's a fully custom ROM though, like cornerstone? I assume you wouldn't be able to get that kind of function with just a custom launcher.

Looks pretty slick as an all-in-one package, but it doesn't look like anything that couldn't be accomplished right now with tasker, locale, your favorite widgets, and some hub-like home page setups, does it? A build your own variety would offer much more customization. Reminds me of an app I use on my note... car dock home. It is setup to recognize my dock or a bt connection in my car and brings up a totally new home screen with different apps and widgets, and cuts off wifi.

Got my access to Project Chameleon Beta have it installed on my Xoom as we speak Very Impressive and I have to say it is VERY unlikely I will be going back to the default android launcher ANYTIME soon. Anyone who did get on-board via kickstarter can still get it now. Go to the site below for details.
http://chameleon.teknision.com/
Project Chameleon running on my Xoom
Wanted to support them earlier already, but was only do to so now since you can pay with paypal now. It really is still in beta mode, not all widgets are included either. Only instagram, twitter (2 options) weather, news (rss) and gmail. They included some wallpapers as well, but you can load your own too. It lags a little on Team Eos JB nightly, but they said they are working on it. I do hope for some more settings and gimmicks, and perhaps some mods. I really hope for some drawer mods though, as I prefer the stock one, preferably with some options (my other launcher is nova prime).
It has a lot of potential, so I think it's a good investment in the android modding.

Is this a TROLL THREAD?
Thread moved to Q&A as is a question and even if you did have enough posts you should never post question threads in development. Please don't disrespect other members and be abusive as this is uncalled for. Yes its been confirmed it is.
I already saw there is a request for sense. No motoblur love yet?
A touchwiz rom for a LG phone?
But no seriously, touchwiz as well as HTC sense, lg ui, motoblur are all closed source and very difficult to port. On Galaxy Nexus, there was a skin pack of Touchwiz on top of stock Android.
For people bashing op, android is all about options. If a developer wants to devote his time into porting it then so be it. Nothing is stopping him. If android was one way if thinking then we wouldn't be any different than the you know community.
Realistically, getting a stable touchwiz rom isn't worth it and it won't happen most likely. If you like touchwiz then get a galaxy s3 or a note 2

The launcher and some of the framework was ported to the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 by a developer called madphone, he even made a ROM that was fully themed.
He's also ported LG launcher and framework to the Galaxy Nexus.
Evilisto has ported the LG lock screen to the Galaxy Nexus too.
Yes OP it's possible and you're not wrong for asking, it's your phone so run what you like on it and never mind everyone else.
Best bet to see TW5 on the Nexus 4 is to contact madphone and see if he's interested in porting it, maybe he can tell you if the mods he's got out will work right off the bat on the Nexus 4.
Do a search for him and you'll find his threads. Or Google TW5 for Galaxy Nexus, a few months back a few big Android sites wrote an article about his work.

All I want is that I can organize my homescreen by pinching it with two fingers and removing that circle in the middle to open the menu, I´d also like to have folders in my menu.
Thats all. I dont want to use third party apps, I had goLauncher on my GalaxyS+ but I had problems so I want it to be fully implemented into my OS/ROM.
Maybe I´ve missunderstood what touchwiz is,
but I am used to this layout and I like it.

It's what stock Android looks like. It's called Holo. I actually like it a lot and prefer it over TouchWiz launcher.
you can google for 'touchwiz launcher galaxy nexus port' and try installing the APK and see if it works (dont flash any zips though, at least i wouldnt try it)
Apologies if this has already been posted somewhere, but as I was updating my Xperia Link app on the play store, I noticed it has screenshots which had the notification bar moves to the top and the three main home, back and open apps buttons moved to the centre of the bottom bar like a nexus 10.
So it seems Sony will be changing it to match the Nexus tablet line UI for the forthcoming update.
Nice find!

the image is clearly photoshopped. look at the status bar - the bluetooth and wifi icons are off centered and much too big, same with the battery percentage. also the apps look like they are copied in, they are much too close to the navigation bar. this is clearly a fake screenshot.
let´s see what the real 4.2 update will bring us i would appreciate the switch to the new tablet ui from 4.2. it´s so much more intuitive and needed for 4.2 because where would the quicksettings go without it?

I don't think Sony will switch to a phablet ui. It would confuse their 'normal' consumer base (excluding people here). And companies always assume users are idiots, so i'm pretty sure we'll still have the tablet ui
Sony is trying to keep the core framework and such as close as possible to stock Android. I also don't like this new UI, but I'm sure as soon as we have the 4.2 system deodexed, mods to bring the old Tablet UI will be back...

It might be photo shopped, but it is from official screenshots from a Sony tablet app on Google Play, so we have to assume it is the new UI. Like you though, I guess we'll have to see
Nothing surprise if Sony switch to this Phablet look as Android officially kill off the Tablet UI since Jelly Bean 4.2.2
I do hope Sony keep the tablet UI even on 4.2.2 or 4.3 in future, I not really fancy on Phablet UI on Tablet due to it just smaller more the screen usage due to Status Bar and Navigation Bar get separate.
Sorry, but:

I've seen PAC-Man but not PA, PAC has the PA per-app DPI changer so its pretty much PA with a bunch more goodies from CM and AOKP.
The only problem is, unless it has been fixed in the past 2 or 3 days, that the ROMs don't have WiFi working on the WiFi only XTZ. A lot of people, myself included, chose the WiFi only XTZ because we didn't need the cellular connectivity and because it was quite a bit cheaper. The entire reason a lot of people haven't unlocked their bootloader is because there is simply no reason to at the current moment because the ROMs haven't progressed far enough, no fault of the hard working devs, for them to be completely functional or have even all the core functions.

As the titles states, I've not seen HALO on any of the CM based or AOSP based rom's? That was a great little edition which really made the phone look cool, does anyone know if it's a simple add on or if it's even already been implemented into a ROM and i've just overlooked it?
I'm aware that there is an app which tries to emulate it but it's nowhere near as intuitive or as integrated.
Any thoughts on it or if it's even in the pipeline to be added to any of our ROMs?
Cheers.

Ain't HALO dead long ago with the restructure (read: degeneration) of PA?

PA was once a nice ROM. Hybrid UI, PIE, HALO, all sorts of unique and original tricks, and open to features. Now they're just sticking close to AOSP and reluctant to even implement a shortcut in power menu.

On newer Android versions, Google is restricting the freedom of UI customization by unifying UI across devices and ROMs, so I don't see the chance for UI breakthroughs like HALO. Sure do hope some team can do it though.

I don't think this can work, touchwiz requires touchwiz framework, aosp based Roms do not use that framework. Whether touchwiz can be reverse engineered, not very likely seeing as no one has even attempted it before even though touchwiz has been around a long time now.

Apps and framework are 2 completely different things, a framework is the underlying structure, an app us just a single entity, it's fat easier to port an app than to port a framework, and plus people move to aosp to get away from manufacturer specific framework like miui and touchwiz, makes no sense to port it.
