Hey!
I am interested in getting the Galaxy Note 3 - SM-N900W8, Canadian variant from windmobile.
Just want to inquire about couple of things, if the current users can give input, would really appreciate it!
Firstly, If I want to flash a custom rom? Which one is good in terms of performance, battery life, and no FC and etc. (I am talking about TW samsung roms). What kernel do I have to flash, so I can use the custom roms?
Secondly, if I dont want a custom, and just want to stick to my stock rom, how do I debloat from samsung and google apps? Can I do this without using the custom recovery (to avoid tampering knox)?
Thirdly, how is the battery life on an untampered note 3? What custom and kernel improves the battery life and by how much? The usage is mixed from web browsing lightly on HSPA+ to emails, texting, whats app, and calling for 20 to 30 minutes.
And is the home button resolved? Like is the new batch of note 3 not having this issue or any other?
Thank you so much!
I havent rooted my own phone yet because I don't want to lose my warranty to knox quite yet. However, I think it's too early to speak of which roms/kernels are good, since there aren't many of them out there yet. Give it a month more at least. The Note 3 home button issue was extremely overrated. I haven't had the issue at all and none of my friends who also bought the Note 3.

Thanks so much!
But, I did go to store and found the home button issue though. So, there is a new batch coming out, so im gonna see how it is.
So since your on stock. how is the battery then?? like normal usage, mix of web browsing, music, calls, texting, and gaming (30min max)?

I don't play much. It's not a part of my daily routine, I only do it when I am extremely bored. I usually use my phone for Tapatalk, radio when I'm wandering around in the house, text/phone of course and then reading on Reddit quite a lot. I usually have 2-3 hours of screen and 15-20 hours in total before I run out. So it keep juice for a whole day pretty much, however if you play for an hour or two, you'll get in trouble. I have 4g, wifi, GPS and sync on as well as 100% brightness. honest opinion about the battery ;disappointed. I'm sure rooting can help a lot though.
Remember that some has better experience with the battery than me, but there are others who is disappointed as well. My impression in general is 1 day usage with stock and 2 days with root where you have debloated and greenified everything (maybe even custom kernel and rom) When I read the forums.

9,5 hours at work, 2x Exchange Push (Mail by Google - Kitkat apk), 1 IMAP Idle (Aquamail), 1 hour Navigon Navigation, 45 minutes calltime -> 67%
This is really great. With every other phone I had before (iPhone5, Lumia 920, etc.) I would be at 0-40% with that usage.

I'm currently trying out different combinations of ROM's and kernels to see how much i can push the phone while still getting at least a day of battery life. So if you have any ideas post them.
im using obsidian v5 beta with stock kernel + oclf.. on a day to day basis with moderate/heavy use i can average 2-3hrs on call, 1-2hrs gaming when bored, 30-50 texts, checking facebook and email. Full charge to about 30-40% left at the end of the day (unplugged for 10-11hrs)
im not trying to stay unplugged for 2-3 days like is a marathon.. im just glad it can last me the day without me worrying about limiting how i use my phone and go about my business

thanks for the input, im trying to find a rom that has good batt life, gps working, and has smooth transitions and little lag w/o a lagfix. Hows the "smoothness" and gps on v5? I would flash it myself to see but i dont have my usb cable @ the moment
Just download from ur phones browser and move to interntal sd via astro... And flash away..

So far I think I covered I'm very satisfied with batt life, as far GPS is concerned i've had no trouble getting locks. I havent exactly timed how long it locks though but i'm guestimating within 30secs. I ran it for 2 days no lagfix and it's been very smooth.. Just got greedy so i added a lagfix anyway
Axura stock gets me 30 hours (light gaming, light pandora, heavy texting, moderate web browsing, 3 widgets pulling data, all on 3g)
thanks for all your input guys, the reason for this is im trying to put together a collaboration of different things from separate roms, similar to what frank707 did, and im deciding on what rom to base it off of. i think i might go w/ axura, just for the transitions and the rom works very well.
I really wanted to get a Droid Pro, the device to me seemed perfect the way it was out of the box.
I currently have an Xperia X1, nice device but I had to run a custom ROM to get the experience I wanted. And I didnt find the right one until a few months ago (2 years searching...). And even the ROM I'm using isnt 100% reliable.
Now I'm looking around these boards and I see people looking for upgrades. Is the original experience that bad? is it slow? Does it crash? Etc. I'd like to know because if I get this device then I'll want to use the official upgrade but nothing else.
I guess it depends on what you are used to.
For me it seems that overall the use is fine. Especially since I froze a few unneeded apps.
But the battery life is horrendous. Ill eventually buy an extended battery because I hear good things about it but stock is horrible.
As for the pro itself, I can't complain really. But this is my first droid so I have nothing to compare to.
I had simply hoped I could customize a bit more.
In general I am not noticing any unresponsiveness since I froze some apps, added apps to the auto end list and started using a cache cleaner.
My only complaint is the battery, but that complaint is a big one.
In battery saver mode, using hardly any apps and making 15 minutes worth of calls lasts me 10 hours max.
Standby time of 13 days my @$$...

What about your data connection, is it on all the time? I can't imagine a new device having a worse battery then my 2 year old Xperia (which doesn't even have the greatest battery in the world, and it has a higher res screen as well).
But apart from the battery life your happy with the default device? Calling, text messaging, browsing, it's all snappy?
Battery life would be my only complaint as well, too. Other than that, I love the thing. Even without any customization, it was fast.
I do wish developers would pay more attention to it, but everybody wants the teeny bopper phones these days, so I can't blame them for favoring that crowd.

Yeah 3G is always running, though in maximum battery saver mode it should shut down any data reception 15 minutes after the screen blacks out.
Come to think of it, perhaps it doesn't and this is my issue...hmm...
I have to hand it to Motorola though, 2 weeks after I got the Pro I chatted with their support to check for a solution, and they were kind enough to send me a battery free of charge. Stock battery, but still, I now have an extra battery in case I need it.
Anyway, yeah everything is snappy. I am not dropping calls, browsing is excellent (I use Dolphin HD for the tabs and addons) and text-ing works great.
I use Handcent for txt so I could set a different tone for some of my contacts.
I did have an issue with losing phone numbers, but I'm not sure what the cause is of that. Perhaps it's something I did myself.
But When I got the phone I connected to my old phone through bluetooth to get all my contacts, I then connected and synced to facebook so all contacts were linked to FB as well.
Somewhere along the line after wards I lost all my phone numbers and all I had left was the info from my FB friends.
Like I said I don't know what caused it and so I'm not sure if I can prevent it from happening again.
This may be something for you to look out for.
You know, it would seem I'm not that happy with my Pro, but that couldn't be further from the truth.
For one, I love Droid and everything that comes with it. Apps, widgets, games, browsing, everything.
Two, I got my pro for free since I went through Target.
Three, every phone has it's flaws. I can not imagine anyone not having at least 1 rather big complaint about their phone.
They simply take it as it is because they know it is not really a big deal in the long run.
I really wanted the Droid 2, but it was expensive for me. But I have no doubt that I would have a complaint about that phone as well.
So yeah, I am happy with my Pro.
I know every phone has its issues. But freezes and lots of slow downs are issues too great to have, in those cases I rather have another, more reliable, phone (I know they are out there, like my old Motorola KRZR).
Naturally smartphones are more complex then regular phones so more issues are to be expected but the problems I've had with the Xperia are some I don't want to repeat. Important phone calls that were cut when the phone freezed and text messages that took forever to sent because the phone had another slow down.
Seems the Droid pro is better then that, otherwise you couldn't be THAT happy with it. I'll have to look for a good importer though, I live in Europe. Netherlands to be precise, so being helped by a dutchbastard is always nice
Oh but I live in new York so I am of little help to you.
But yeah you are right. Problems like freezes are not the type of issue one can live with.
At first when I got my pro I got app after app and about a week in I had issues with slow desktop scrolling.
Then as I said I froze some apps and added all the non important ones to the auto end list and haven't had a problem since.
Do keep in mind that I've only had my phone for about 6 weeks now.
But I like it a lot. Initially I wanted the droid 2, but couldn't afford it.
At this point I think the only thing the druid 2 can offer me is a better keyboard layout wise.
But this thing does everything I wanted and more.

I have a Droid Pro and I LOVE it. It's completely turned me on to the Android world.
I'll second the extended battery. I had trouble making it through a day on the stock battery, with extended I'm usually at about 30-40% by the end of the day.
I actually prefer to use the Droid Pro stock. Obviously there are advantages to to rooting. My main reason for rooting my inc, fascinate, D2, any phone I had really were the roms, wifi tether, etc. The advantages obviously outweigh the disadvantages but developers obviously aren't working with the Pro a ton so I havent needed the wifi tether, you can delete the bloatware and I did with my X and my D2 but I like using the Pro stock. It runs fine, Really, just my opinion.

hi mate,
Hope you are right ... with stock battery cant last more than 6/7 hrs...with screen to autobr., killing all apps after screen out, nothing running appart from sync services for my mails, weather, facebook and twiter....nothing else, no calls, no msgs,no inet, no music , ...nothing and with that last only6/7 hrs......
so I really hope that extended battery that I ordered will fix my problem,,, I am happy to charge the device every night as long as it last trough the day and days are long- 15/16 hrs...
if leave this aside I love the device even the stock software is not to bad...
just really hope that the extended battery will make it happen ....if not ... I will sell it...((
Ive had a few questions when it comes to my trial with samsung devices and this is where my story starts..
So I have had a mirage of Samsung devices starting with the Note 2, to the Galaxy s4, and now currently the Note 3. I have put as much time and effort as my noob abilities will allow me to and I'm honestly trying to figure out a couple of things. Throughout all these devices in less than one year I have realized that I can only get my battery to supply modest results. I have torn through xda and have done almost every solution out there to in order to increase my battery life. With no impacting results I sit here truly wondering how is it that people can really get more than a day out of these phones. I have honestly never been able to get any of these phones to 5-6 hours screen on time and more than 24 hours off the charger. I evny the people that swear they are heavy users and still get great battery life, but I just dont see how this is possible from my experience...
I would say on a normal day i use the device moderatly and somewhat carefully as to retain the battery life to the fullest. I normally have my phone on WiFi for about half the day but I do browse and do a bit on LTE too. I use all kinds of social apps (twitter, instagram, fb, hangouts for sms, etc) that are all using push notifications. I have a university email that uses exchange and that is push as well. I stream all my music using Google play music daily but also a lot on WiFi. I search the web a lot and use flipboard constantly. I hardly use any games except at home when I know I have my charger. So one of my questions is, does this classify me as a heavy user comparing to all of you people?
I have tried almost everything.. Wake lock detector, turning off absolutely everything location based, app ops, power saver for when I'm at work (8+ hours), turning off all the smart features, low brightness, turning off bloat, etc. But still nothing too spectacular for results. Keep I'm mind I'm all stock and for now I dont really want to change that. So my main question after that long story is, am I missing something? Should I be getting better battery life after all these attempts? Is my battery life ok for how I use my phone? Are there any other options so I can be like the people getting monster battery life?
What made me write this post is because I was at BestBuy and one of the Samsung reps had the same Verizon note 3 that I have. I asked him if I could see his battery stats (which he did not know how to find.. Wow) and his phone had been on for over a day and had 7 hours of screen on time.. It blew me away that he was getting extraordinary battery life and obviously didnt do a thing to try to preserve it.
Keep in mind the battery stats posted are actually some of the best Ive had when it comes to screen on time so usually its dead after about 16 hrs and 3 hrs screen on time.

if your doing graphic intensive stuff on the internet it will destroy your battery. The fact your chrome used almost as much battery as your screen makes me believe there's something wrong there..
My chrome browsing basically just consists of normal web pages and some embedded videos on news and sports sites. Is that enough to cause that much damage?

It shouldn't. But just to be sure, whenever you're done using your phone at times you can go into task manager holding down the home button and click the clear memory button under the RAM tab. That will stop all processes from continuing to run when you're done using them

I would also consider giving chrome a break and using a different browser to see if you battery life improves. I'm currently using Boat Browser but there are several browsers.

Yeah I agree that something just doesn't seem right with Chrome using about as much battery as your screen. Try another browser, make sure you clear your recent apps, and turn off anything that you are not going to be using. I turn off all of the touch sounds and haptic feedback, as well as smart stay and air gestures, etc..I never really seemed to get the battery life that I thought I should be getting whenever I was on the Stock ROM.
Maybe chrome is the culprit but I do clear the ram and close apps all the time.. Its just frustrating that I'm trying everything and nothing seems to be changing much..

I personally like Firefox and Opera Mini, it's a matter of personal preference though. There are a bunch of browsers out there. I also use Battery Doctor and Clean Master to clear cache, junk files and applications running in the background. If your rooted you can download "Greenify" which would probably help you as well.

I have the Greenify Donation app, and love it. Stopped using Chrome because it was tearing my battery life down, using the Stock Browser and Boat Browser at times. Greenify also helps with some other apps that just keep running even though I didn't use them during the day. The only thing I have as an exception, is my Blackberry Messenger to communicate with my family abroad during the day and that app has been behaving nicely. Everything else, minus HD Widgets, has been Greenified, and I can go all day (unplug at 7A, plug back in around 9P with plenty of juice left.
So this is what I get after a long period using wakelock detector. Does anyone have any insight as to what this all means. What does the x538 refer to and how does this app show how it's affecting my phone? One is the CPU wake lock and the other is the screen.
Sent from my SM-N900V using xda app-developers app
The 538 is how many times it has woken the phone up (wake lock).

I've had an AT&T Note 3 since January. The phone is great but since the update to 4.4.2 I have been experience horrendous battery life, to the point that I'm having to charge it throughout the day.
I work construction and use my phone for several hours per day, resulting in 2-3 hours of voice calls and 2-3 hours of screen time. My last Note 2 and the current Note 3 used to be able to handle my workload while being unplugged from 7AM to 10PM at night.
If I was to root my phone, could I gain back my battery life? I have never had the need for my phone to be anything other than stock but I am desperate at this point.
Thanks
Rooting your phone will not result in having better battery life. What you can do is detect apps that keep your phone awake. Another method is to flash a custom kernel with lower voltage or one on which you can undervolt yourself. Be aware that by rooting and/or flashing custom recoverys/kernels or firmwares you'll trigger the Knox counter. This will void your warranty. There is no way to revert it.
Please use the Q&A section next time you have a question. Hope I could help you a little.

I appreciate the reply. I was hoping that rooting would allow the phone to run off of custom firmware and not have the horrible battery drain many Note 3 users are experiencing after the 4.4.2 update.
I have installed GSam Battery Monitor for over a month and been monitoring it daily. I'm consistently seeing Android System and Kernel (Android OS) using 40% of my daily battery life and Media using another 15%-25%. Other than that I've been unable to determine much else. I do not play games or Facebook, I just talk and text all day.
Is the warranty on the phone one year? If so, I'm 2/3 through it and would be willing to void it for better battery life.
I have looked through all I could find before posting, but honestly am somewhat overwhelmed by all the information on XDA. This is magnified by the fact that there are many versions of the Note 3 and different carriers.

Don't worry, it's normal to suffer infoglut the first time looking through xda. You'll get used to it =)
So you have the AT&T version of the Note III aka hlteatt or SM-N900A. You're device has a Qualcomm chip built in like most of the Note III variants out there. There's also a Note III variant which has an Exynos chip built in but I think you won't confuse Exynos firmwares with those dedicated for Qualcomm variants. The ROM threads ususally have pretty good descriptions about that. AFAIK most custom ROMs are compatible with any Qualcomm variant. E.G. any AOSP/CM ROM for the Qualcomm Note III has a unified build carried by the name "hlte". Meaning, that as long as you don't flash an image meant for the Exynos variant, you should be good.
40% for Android-System and Kernel isn't normal at all. I also use GSam Battery Monitor. Android-System and Kernel only use about 19% of the battery on my phone. Something that helped me when I had the exact same issue was to switch locating method from high accuracy to power saving. You can find this setting by long-pressing the GPS icon in the notification drawer. The location settings menue will pop up. Under "Mode" you can change to "Power saving". I'd be happy if you could report if it did work for you.
You're welcome =) Just hit the thanks button.
If I may add my own comments here:
1. you should go to note 3 ATT forum and there find proper method to root your phone, we have towelroot program that can root phone very easily without breaking knox warranty, albeit I don't know if it works on your version, it worked perfectly on mine (t-mo)
2. While it is true that root by itself won't do anything about your battery usage, many programs that really help need root
For example greenify, titanium backup or android assistant require root to disable many useless (useless for you that is) programs that drain your battery
3. I totally disagree with Nitrous that GPS is the culprit for high battery usage. It is my experience that GPS all by itself does not work at all unless the location info is requested by some other programs. Google maps for example only run GPS when screen is on, when screen is off, GPS is off also. However some badly behaving programs can keep requesting location even in the middle of night, but IMO those programs are the problem, not GPS itself. I have GPS, BT and WiFi on 24/7 and with light use my phone could last 4-5 days. If GPS was draining battery as many people think, phone would never last that long.
What you should do is go to ATT forum and find towelroot method, root your phone and freeze, or disable apps you don't use. For example I don't use Bloomberg, Yahoo, Facebook, Hangouts, indexing etc (your list may be different, since different provider) so I have them frozen (won't start up) . If I ever change my mind, I can unfreeze them later.
You can also run programs to tell you which apps use most battery, or wake the phone from sleep and then decide if you need them or not.
BTW sometimes full reset and cache clear can fix some of the problems, so maybe that should be the first step.
Once you find which program /s cause problems your phone should last whole day. I could easily get 6 or more screen hours on my Note3, unless playing some intensive games, so should you and it just took couple hours to identify and disable all the bloat and there is a lot.
I also experienced increase in battery usage after updating to KK, but I have not found a time to look over the bloat and redo my program freezing efforts yet.
I know that GPS doesn't drain battery that much. But trust me, it is very likely to cause that type of behavior. I'm in this forums since a couple of years. In most cases, when Android-system and Kernel drain unusual amounts of battery it was location services that was causing it. But not because they were using GPS, but because they kept the device awake the whole time. And there you see my point of switching locating methods. In 90% of the scenarios where people described this kind of behavior of their devices, this solved the problem. But you're right in saying that it's not a permanent solution. I agree to your first two points.

I always have GPS off and only turn it on when I need it though Android still has the higher or second highest battery usage.
I agree, root and uninstall /freeze bloatware. You'll be surprised.

If you have external sd card in phone, remove & use phone for couples of the day.

Just to give quick update, after I wrote my comments here, I fully charged my phone and went to sleep. In the morning battery was down to 80% and that finally prompted me to action. I freezed some apps, cleared cache and did some "housekeeping". I don't know what did the trick, but this time overnight my phone went from 100 to 98%, 10 times better than a night before. Now, after 18 hours of some light use like few calls, couple games, light internet use etc it is still at 80%, so it's pretty much back to what I had before update. I wish I wrote down what I did to track particular culprit in my case, but it is amazing how couple bad apps can ruin battery life, but at the same time killing them turns things around so much. All in all, out of some 340 apps and services on my phone, only 21 are frozen and about 30 are stopped from starting at boot up, but are able to start later if needed.

Last question; 340 apps system-wide, or 340 PlayStore apps?
So I was using this phone as my main phone and moved to custom rooms due to issues with video playback on stock roms. However, I now barely use this phone but it needs to remain on for a couple of texts or phone calls a week or random app usage, most of the time it remains idle so I believe the power savings if dose works should be noticeable? Anyways, I wanted to know which rom would have the best battery life since I don't really care about features etc, but I don't want the phone to be unstable for day to day use in the future, just in case as it is my backup phone. I'm currently on optimised cm 13 from a couple of months ago on a i9505.
Thanks for any input.
It seems to be a general consensus that TouchWiz ROMs have better battery life than costucustom ROMs. So maybe you should start there.

KitKat firmware is the best for battery life.
